Massively disappointed… What was a lovely spot and takeaway and my first choice had turned into a never again. Preferred takeaway as a celebration as a family treat. Where to start. Chicken tikka was slices of meat cut so thing could see through it, where was the cubes? Lamb tikka was pretty much the same and tasteless. Just small slivers of ? Soggy popadoms, no chunks of meat, tandoori mix grill was litterally so small and lacking in flavour it was pointless ? Don’t even get me started on the prawns. So small caption birds-eye would have missed catching them . under cooked naan breads, biroyani with watery sauce and lamb was knowhere to be been. Is truly disappointed and will not be returning. Know ideal what has happened here but if they don’t sort it, I can see it closing.. waste of money..

We ordered a take away for collection. I'd been in contact with the restaurant via facebook the day before to find out about gluten free options and they had been very helpful and seemed to understand what I needed. We ordered a few mains and a few sides. Everything was quite mildly flavoured so it was a little disappointing I'm afraid. It was nice...but not nice enough that we would order again but we might have just been unlucky with our choices. But as a gluten free person I didn't get poisoned, and I had a curry, rice and popadoms so I was happy!

Our first time at Gurkha Tandoori, but it won't be our last. The food was delicious, in fact we'd both say that our onion bhaji starter was the best we'd ever had - not overcooked and too crispy. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the waitresses were polite and attentive. We'll definitely be back !!

Love this restaurant best Indian in Retford. Their Sunday buffet is exceptional value. Lovely staff. Also excellent for takeaway.

Gurkha was recommended by friends who had previously had takeaways and thoroughly enjoyed them. We booked a table for eight people on a Thursday evening and the entire experience was superb from beginning to end. Our waitress was very helpful, advising that we could amend any dishes on the menu to our individual taste. For any dishes that we were unfamiliar with, particularly the Nepalese food, she described the ingredients and how hot they might be - although this could be amended to suit personal preference. A lovely evening in a welcoming, warm and clean environment. We will be back very soon.

Unidentified items in food, takeaway orders wrong all the time and most dishes taste of chopped tomatoes, very disappointed

We visit Retford a lot as we have family there, and have never visited this establishment before. The surroundings are pleasant, and we received a very warm welcome even though we hadn't booked. The food is fabulous, reasonably priced and more than we could manage between us. We kept asking ourselves why have we never come here before. We had a half bottle of wine left over and the waiter kindly loaned us a bottle stop, which we shall be returning next time! We're real foodies, and if we say it's good - - - - It's not just good, IT'S REALLY GOOD!!

A fusion of tastes every dish was well presented and full of flavour. The staff are very attentive ensuring your service is on par with the food, this was our second visit and were not disappointed both the food and service was as though it was our first visit. Excellent quality food once again will return in the future.

If you want an at home Indian meal experience , you’d be better going to Asda and getting a ready meal curry , as the only difference between the two is Asda is much cheaper ! The food from this curry house tastes like supermarket ready meals ! Not authentic / not BIR standard. Microwaved I suspect ! Wouldn’t revisit ..

Visited twice while staying in Retford - excellent food and service both times. Well priced, friendly staff - what’s not to like!

Excellent cuisine! Decided to break our journey on a very hot day and look for something to eat in Retford, following the reviews by previous travellers we found the Gurkha and were not disappointed! Although it was early Saturday evening the restaurant is clearly popular and by 6pm it was filling up fast, so perhaps it would be advisable to book. The service was attentive and the meal was delicious. I tried for the first time a Hariyali curry and was hooked forever. The final bonus was that the prices were very reasonable.

Just moved to the area and was lucky enough to opt for this place, food arrived promptly and extremely tasty. Will 100% be back.

I had two dishes a Pathia and a Jalfrezi, they tasted identical and far too much use of chopped tomatoes for my palate. I know both dishes from other restaurants and from the web, a Pathia has its roots in Persian cooking similar to Dansak, jalfrezi should be more of a stir fry not a thick tomato sauce.

Our first trip to this restaurant and can definitely say it will not be the last! The food was amazing, full of flavour and plentiful!! Great service, very welcoming and real value for money!! Can’t wait to return!

Early doors take away. Really friendly. Takeaway ordered. Half hour for a beer. Perfect timing! Back home for very early meal due to recent grandson! Food was all superb. Everything as expected and a bit more. Highly recommended. We will be back when appropriate as live in Norfolk!! Thank you.

Welcoming Staff and Magnificent Food, really impressed, we’d been to the majestic to watch a show and had booked a table for afterwards, we arrived ahead of time but were accommodated immediately, couldn’t fault service or food, I had chicken madras was best I’d had anywhere ! Definitely would go back seriously first class

Booked here pretty last minute on a Saturday night, relatively new to the area so had never even heard of it but found it via google. The place is only small and was very busy when we arrived but the welcome was immediate. We had drinks and poppadums within 5 mins of walking in whilst we were looking through the extensive menu. The food we ordered was great, really tasty, plenty of it and we both thoroughly enjoyed. The owner introduced himself and chatted for a while about his restaurant and the history of his business which was lovely, he even offered complimentary drinks but unfortunately we were too full to accept. We will definitely return to this restaurant and will be recommending to friends, they do lots of vegetarian dishes as well as gluten free. Top place

We always order our takeaways from here so thought we would try the Sunday evening buffet. Having never dined in before this was a first. Food was lovely, plenty to eat and very tasty. I've only given 4 stars because it was quite cramped. We were back-to-back with the people on the table next to us. It is only a small restaurant so I appreciate there's not much space. Everybody was chatting and friendly, thankfully, it could have been different if there had been different customers in!

Nice food, a few dishes that you wouldn’t see on a northern Indian or Bangladeshi restaurant. A member of our party had spent some time travelling in Nepal and suggested the food was authentic.

With regards to a takeaway from here, very disappointing. All dishes pretty much tasteless. Cubes of meat in very thin sauce. Tikka Masala was basically tomato sauce with chicken. No spice or flavour. Naan was also undercooked.

Started by almost braking my teeth on rock solid bits in the lime pickle. chips were unbelievably soggy, and chicken pathia was just watery tomato sauce with bits of correander in it. waste of money and disgraceful food

Decided to grab a takeaway on Saturday evening from here. We didn't have to wait too long for our order to be prepared. There were 4 of us and we all ordered something different. All of us were impressed by the dishes we had and each dish was equally delicious. I especially enjoyed my tandoori butter chicken and will definitely be ordering this again.

Travelled from Doncaster as we'd heard about this place and we weren't disappointed. Waitress was very helpful as we're all the staff.The food was good ,and as they were extremely busy, we'd expected a long wait but not so.the enormous poppadoms were warm and fresh and passed the time until our main course came. Although we live maybe thirty miles away, we'll certainly come again.

You are stopping over in a hotel so decided to visit and we ordered a selection of dishes. The food was all delicious and tasted so nice and fresh and the staff were absolutely lovely and even brought out complementary poppadoms lollies for kids etc. I even took my leftovers home drove it all the way to Leicester and had it for my dinner the following evening and it was equally as delicious. We had a real assortment of food and ask for it all to come out of the same time and it did did everything was spiced perfectly and and presented lovely and the portions were really good. I had a gurka beer which was huge and went down lovely! My only gripe is that I would have liked to have tipped the lovely staff but but I have no cash on me as per covid times and the card machine did not give me an option to tip!

We had a takeaway on recommendation from my sister, who has eaten in the restaurant several times. We were staying with her, none of us wanted to drive, so we could have a glass of wine or two. Meal arrived 45 minutes late, almost cold, could not distinguish between any dish. Nan bread was raw in the centre. One main course was missing, we were sent some popadoms, I assume because the meal was late, they were all broken and overcooked. I’m so disgusted, as a chef myself, there is no excuse to send out food like this! I expect when eating an Indian meal to be able to taste some spicing, this meal was bland and tasteless. Very obvious that they had thrown cold cooked chicken into a sauce. Chicken dry, over cooked, no subtle spicing as you expect from a decent Indian restaurant. I guess because they are involved with eat out, to help out, they simply cannot cope with many orders. Sorry if you cannot handle the trade, don’t seek it. Long term it will only do you harm! We also tried phoning several tines to complain, no one answered the phone!

This is our go -to Indian, having sampled all of the local options, Gurkha is the most consistently tasty. Their saag paneer is the best I've ever had and you can't go wrong with the rest of the menu either. Highly recommended.

Popped in here on way back from work, my 2nd visit , when I moved out this way I have found it difficult to find a decent tasting curry, this is definitely one of the better places, good meat good flavour. Fairly cheap All good!!!

After having our takeaway tonight and I've given it another chance decided to write my review. Visited for a sit down meal twice and both times the curries have been tasteless our third time was a takeaway but we just had the puri starters which was nice but our most recent takeaway tonight was the worst. Only put a quarter of the rice on the plate along with a bit of the curry and the amount of water that come out the dish was unbelievable. Definitely won't be ordering again

Had a lovely meal delivered from here tonight, super tasty and plentiful, delivered at the time requested. Only down side was the garlic naans (2 of) they were garlicless!

We went for a lovely birthday meal in January, where we all tried the traditional Gurkha Cuisine, we were not disappointed. We a variety of meals, rices, poppadoms and pickles. The service was excellent, our granddaughter of 18 months was welcomed, a very friendly and accommodating restaurant highly recommended. We would definitely dine their again.

A quite wet Tuesday evening, gave the Gurkha a try. Both our dishes were well flavoured , one bursting with mint, the other with coriander Hariyali & Sagarmatha and the roti was the second best after the one I had in Jaipur (India).Pleasant relaxed Indian background music, just right. The lighting was a tad dated in this modern LED era.Overall a good mealGoing to go for the Thali evening they hold.

Yet again we have had another fantastic meal at Gurkha Retford. The staff are so friendly and we can’t wait to return again for our next curry. Thank you again to you all Sarah & Wayne 😀

I have had many different curries from here and they have all been amazing. Would definitely recommend and I will be having many more in future.

Had take away food a few times good food but tonight absolutely rubbish naan bread was just coated in garlic butter just turned to mush when dipped in curry the chicken was the size of iceberg usually nice bite size chicken. Need a proper Indian restaurant and take away in Retford instead of the rubbish what is here now. And people from different areas read the reviews about how good and then when they try them and disappointed they probably will never visit Retford again

The food and service were as good as the warm welcome - excellent. Nothing was too much and they made you really feel you were their top priority

I am new to this area , not tried here before, glad I did, good size pieces of meat good flavours one of the better curries I have had around here, fairly cheap as well, only thing I thought was strange we were the only people in on a Saturday night..from about 930pm but no problem with service or food..

Had two bad orders our of the last three, don't know if they have changed chefs but we have had bland food and stupidly hot, last order was 1hr and 10 mins, previous orders cold, time to look at other options

Food well presented and outstanding quality, staff are very attentive and welcoming, friendly casual atmosphere.

Really enjoyed our visit. We had the most delicious Chicken Tikka Masala & Himalayan Biryani which was topped with fresh herbs. Service outstanding & restaurant exceptionally clean. Thank you for making us feel so welcome. Highly recommended.

Tried looking for something different rather than your current Indian meals. The menu has a lot in common with Bangladeshi cuisine so we chose dishes that we thought sounded like Gurkha. We had 3 different meals and what we like was the lack of meat swimming in oil, as seen in a lot of Bangladeshi dishes. The staff when I went to pick up my take away were so nice and helpful. The only downside on our meal was the lack of spice but this could have been our choice. We will try again and pick different items off the menu.

Took my 80 year old mother for a Thali here last week. Every dish was cooked to perfection and a perfectly balanced meal. I order takeaways from here on a weekly basis and I'd rather go without if I couldn't get a meal from here. Tonight I promised myself I'd have something I've never tried before. Lamb dhansak Madras strength. Unbelievable!! It's in the top 3 curries I've ever tasted!! Mushroom rice and saag paneer perfect as always. I really can't find a fault with this place.

We went for the Wednesday Thali offer and were well pleased. 3 tasty curries each - of our own choice - with rice and nan for under a tenner. We were served by helpful and friendly staff who work hard to give diners a good experience. They were happy to tweak my choices to my taste. This is an unfussy , welcoming restaurant staffed by good people - give it a try.

We have not had a curry for a while so decided to give Gurkha a try. We were not disappointed. An early Sunday evening meal saw the restaurant full - always a good sign. Plenty of choice on the menu and all reasonably priced - very happy with our popadoms, starts mains and a couple of drinks each for £17 per person. Great service, lovely, tasty food, each dihsh had is own character, no ghee soup. Really nice curry.

First time to this restaurant and by far the best curry experience we’ve had in the Retford area for a long time. Ok it’s not uber modern but it’s not pretentious either as so many places are nowadays having invested in modernisation but not person skills. Efficient, attentive and friendly service, excellent food including a great selection of vegetarian options. We will be back. Go Gurkha!

Had a very enjoyable evening - because I was with 20 good friends. However, the restaurant was very poor. We were in the back room - just a very dull room, which was a bit "tired". We were booked for 7pm, but didn't get the main course until 9.30pm! Quality of the food was poor NB I know what I'm talking about, having travelled, & eaten, across India & Nepal many times - & have sampled some excellent Indian/Nepalese food in the UK. I asked for a glass of water, waited over 30 minutes,had to ask again. Waited again - nothing. Had to go to the bar to get one. Friendly staff, but very poor service. I will not be going there again.!

Three of us dined on Friday, food was absolutely superb. The menu is extensive and loads of unusual choices with a big fish and veggie selection. Good value with most main courses about £7 plus rice etc. For a meal, side dish, 2 beers each and pickle tray etc came to 20 a head, very fair. Great service, attentive but not intrusive. Has changed hands in the last year. Sounds minor, but the poppadoms and pickles were the best I've ever had (and I've had a lot!) Only not 5 star because the room itself was a bit cool and bare - turn the heating on and put a bit of decor up and this place would be fantastic. Definitely worth a try.

While so many Asian eateries these past few years have gone in for upmarket gimmickry - with increased prices to match - the Gurkha has sensibly stayed plain , simple and familiar. What you get is tasty , well priced food in cosy surroundings served by friendly staff who seem genuinely happy to accommodate your needs and requests. There were five of us and not a scrap left over. The portions were neither skinny - which seems to be a flagship policy of the upmarket joints - nor hugely over facing. Pickle tray , some starters , mains , breads/rices and a few beers thrown in. Ninety quid. Job well done , and we'll be back soon.

This the best restaurant I ever been too staff are always there for you service is key factor when you visit in restaurant and this guys now's food wise you have so many dishes to choose and all of them you can't have in one visit you have to go again and again lovely food my best is nepali salad and nepali chicken choyila which is so tender and testy wow what a restaurant I been to lovely visit this place you won't be disappointed I will be going again and again

Despite it's great reviews and recommendations I am sad fo give this a poor review but honesty is important. We were staying in Retford and really looking forward to a good curry . This came up so high we were sure it was going to be great. We arrived early and shown to our table after getting the menus and some time later we were offered a drink, we asked for some poppadoms and said we were alo ready to order our food. We were told we could. Ot order until we had finished our poppadoms... not too bothered we agreed wajted around 10 mins and our drink and poppadoms arrived. Some 15 minute sat

These guys never disappoint. Everything is done well including the service. Definitely recommend and would dare to say Retford's No1 Indian

What a find! Delicious food and delightful staff. We visited when England were playing a match in the World Cup so the place was empty. We were reluctant to enter because as visitors to a town we try and choose an eatery that looks busy. As most places were empty on the night in question we just had to take a chance. Well, we really landed on our feet here!

All food was fresh, hot and delicious. The welcome was so genuine and warm. Lovely staff who wanted to please. The place itself is quite minimalist, but comfortable. Will definitely go back soon.

Went for the first time a few weeks ago. The waiter was a gentleman, very polite, and helpful. The food was gorgeous. We were both treated to delicious flavours, in a pleasant atmosphere. My husband and I go here all the time and recommend it to everyone. The staff can’t do enough for you and the food is great. They accommodate his penchant for blisteringly hot curries in tandem with his plant-based diet. He tells me that no two curries they give him are the same, as they like to experiment on him. All the usual Indian restaurant fare is available but being Nepalese as well, The Ghurka also has a few different things on the menu that are worth seeking out. It isn’t flashy, but personally I am always a bit suspicious of curry places that are, as my experience in the past has led me to conclude some of them place style above substance. I know that Indian restaurants can be quite a personal thing and that people seem to have a deep rooted loyalty to their favourite. We have tried all the other places in the locality and this place, for us, is by far the best. The Ghurka bottled beer is perfect to wash it down with as well. If you value good food and good service, give this place a try.

Here on a family visit. 9 of us attended on an "empty" Saturday evening! So we all expected excellent food and service...unfortunatley not up to the usual indian standard you would expect.. waited 15 mins for our drinks order to be taken and the usual would you like any poppadoms. Another 20 mins later drinks arrived and another 5 mins after that the poppadoms. Mushroom bahjee as 1 order with the poppadoms as a stater arrived as everyone was halfway through. So not timed. We had to keep calling waiter over for drinks too and to clear table.. not enough chicken as well on the chicken tilka massala so we sent that back and asked for more meat.. not the cheapest of places either so shop around in Retford. You will find a better indian for sure

Visitamos el domingo 25, excelente comida, excelente personal amable, qué más puedo decir, sin duda volveremos. La decoración puede ser un poco anticuado, pero esto no resta la calidad de la comida y el servicio.

.....ambience not really acceptable. We were stuck by the door which wedged open every time anyone came or went. It was a freezing night so despite closing it at least a dozen times we had a very uncomfortable meal. We asked to move but were not accommodated. A shame as the food is fine, but this is the second time its happened and I won't be going back again.

I love eating at Gurkha's. They have a great range of food which is well prepared. The staff are very friendly and if you are a regular they are easy to get to know. Occasionally in addition to their menu they will also offer you Nepalese dishes; which is where they are from.They are quite happy to adjust dishes to your taste and also deliver if you want a takeaway.

Dated, no atmosphere, poor food, terrible wine, chicken definitely wasn't freshly cooked, there was only 2 of us and another couple in, the meals weren't very hot as in temperature either. The deco is awful the tables aren't laid very well, no table cloths, paper napkins.

Usually eat here once a week and have never been disappointed. The menu is quite extensive and will suit almost all tastes. The chef is happy to vary the spice content of any dish to suit those who like their food hot and also those who like it milder.
