Gurkha Curry Lounge in East Staffordshire

Turned up just after 6pm, no reservation. Seated immediately. Staff very pleasant & helpful. I had a Gurkha beer - really nice. Shared poppadoms and dips as a starter. I then had vegetable biryani which was delicious- perfectly spiced with lots of crunchy vegetables. My husband had chicken tikka biryani which he really enjoyed. A really nice place, great food and reasonably priced

I recently posted of a shocking curry my partner and I had several weeks ago in the Jahingir, St Andrews. We couldn’t have found the more polar opposite of a curry house if we tried. We are stopping over in Burton On Trent to visit the National Arboretum before heading to Norfolk. The Gurkha Curry Lounge is extremely clean and incredibly inexpensive. We shared the Paneer Masala and Pancha Vegetable with two rotis. The rotis were the best we have had, outside India. Lovely. As for the two dishes, being two very well travelled middle aged women we know a good curry when we come across one. This is no exception! I did ask if I could marry the chef for the Pancha recipe, sadly he’s already married! Damn and blast! The reason why I began this post with the St. Andrews Jahingir was, we had virtually the same meals (on paper) in both restaurants. One cost over £40 and was barely touched, the other was £28 and the plates were virtually licked clean! If you’re in St. Andrews give the Jahingir a very wide birth. If you’re in Burton on Trent book a table!

My mum and I visited last night ( Saturday) - lovely meal and attentive staff, but not overly so - lamb really tender - cardamon kulfi was delicious

Family Takeaway. Ordered online for a 19.00 delivery but then heard one member wouldn't arrive until 19.45. Messaged the Gurkha asking to make the delivery 20.00 and got a speedy reply that that was fine. Food delivered at spot on 20.00 and tasted great.

Fab food. The service is very efficient and polite. The table cloths are white and perfectly clean . The food was delicious. A fab place to visit

I ordered a take out which was delivered promptly and courteously. The food was excellent. I thoroughly recommend this as a place to order take out (which was on a Sunday at 9.30pm)

Came for a bite to eat on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago from a friends recommendation.Excellent Nepalese styled lamb curry, well portioned big lamb cubes used in my dish and very flavoursome.Lots of options on the menu and very tasty rice dishes. The vegetarian curry wasn’t the greatest as was served with a very small amount of paneer cheese.Nice setting.Would visit again.

It's bt the first time I've reviewed Gurkha, but I've been coming here for over five years. The reason? Friendly staff, super service and melt in your mouth lamb dishes. The Lamb Buttaw or Kushkuri with one of their fine Malbecs is just perfect.

Had a girls night out mid week and came for a curry…. Absolutley beautiful food, always been my favourite choice. Great service from the waiter and barman… the chefs do you proud! Certainly be back soon.

Went with my family for a meal at the Gurkha the food was beyond excellent very short wait, staff was very nice and pleasant if you want excellent indian/Nepalese food would definitely recommend to go to the Gurkha definitely coming again no doubt!

Upon arrival, the restaurant looked nice from within. We had to wait around 5-10 minutes which we didn't mind and then we ushered to our seats... we didn't get seated in the main restaurant area but rather took through these double doors which looked like the waiter was leading us to the kitchen and then showed us stairs to go up. When we got to the top, it was horrible decor and felt like a store room. There was a table full of dirty glasses and dishes. We were seated, directly behind me was a fan blowing cold air and a stereo system blurring loud music. There was a large group of young men that were so loud that we struggled to have conversation. They did however leave shortly after. We were asked if we wanted large drinks or normal, we opted for the large... what arrived was two normal looking glasses. There was an English couple next to us, we had heard the gentleman ordering a large coke... His drink arrived in a pint glass! When we bought this to the attention of a waitress, she was prepared to correct this, but there was another waiter who was acting more superior to her who came over to us and said the quantity was the same as in the pint glass and they had run out of those glasses. He went to the back of the room, where the table of dirty dishes was and then had the audacity to take one of the empty dirty pint glasses and fill it with water poured from the regular glass to show the waitress that the same quantity filled the pint glass, only it didn't and my companion saw the whole thing. Then 5 minutes later he appears with a small diet coke bottle and said he was giving it free as a gesture to us not admitting he lied before! We had ordered our starters, chilli paneer and manchurian... we did not get what we ordered! If that is what they call a manchurian, wow! Burton is being jipped off! The sauce for the manchurian and the chilli paneer was the exact same. During our whole time there that waiter just kept hawking at us which was so uncomfortable. And for our main, we ordered one main dish and a side... We had asked for only certain vegetables to be added in the main as we don't eat mushrooms and didn't fancy having peas and sweetcorn... what we got was a luke warm dish with raw vegetables! Why there was paneer added to the dish we could not understand as we had specified we did not want any paneer. I couldn't even say the veg was al dente - it was straight up uncooked! We informed the waiter who still had this chip on his shoulder and he said he could ask the chef to make it again... at which point we had enough so we had asked him to just take it off the bill and bring this to us. Upon examining the bill, the cheeky sod had taken the side dish off and charged us for the main (the inedible dish) as well as for large drinks. Did I leave a tip... no. I did pay the full bill and the extra he charged could be his tip and charity. Disgusting behaviour.

This was a leaving do for myself and a colleague. My the curry was great and service was 5 star. I will definitely be back here for the next night out.

I must say this is a gem producing a top food consistently . Nepalese food is better looking and taste better than usual Indian restaurant food and this restaurant proved just that in ou recent visit. Lamb chop melt in the mouth, Chicken Lasun Khursani is just perfect, Nans and rice tasted not just fresh but of real quality . We all enjoyed your meal and host is a very welcoming too . Visited this place few times now and we have never been dissatisfied. The food is amazing with lots of distinct flavours and service is second to none. The place was very busy at the time we visited but the staffs accommodated us very professionally. Can’t wait to visit this place again, one of our favourite place to go for curry.

Decided to try this place based on the reviews on here, however my experience differs completely from everyone else's.Booked a table for 3, when we arrived they had us marked fown for a table for 2, but the table still wasn't ready. Had to wait over 20 minutes to get set down at a table for 2 with an additional chair propped to the side, making it very cramped and uncomfortable.Must have been another 40 minutes until we were able to order the food, took 3 attempts to order a glass of water and the attempts for an apple juice never bore fruit.The food itself wasn't worth the wait either. Sure the starters were not too bad, worth the price of £9 for one item? No, definitely not.The main courses were also very disappointing. The sauces were a horrible combination and didn't sit right with the meal at all. The meats included, specificly the chicken, was bland and rather dry.The scambi and chips dish served to the small boy in the group was the most unappetising dish of them all. Big plate with a few chunks of frozen supermarket style scampi (definitely wasn't freshly made there) and some chips. Overall a dreadful meal, dreadful service, awful waiting times. Definitely a place we will never return to.

Lovely meal totally spoilt by rowdy customers who refused to quieten down.My party asked them to please quieten it down as we were on the next table and could not hear ourselves speak. They took mo notice.The management made no effort at all to help in the situation even though they were aware of the problems we were having and let the problem continue.Last visit here for a regular customer !!!!

We came here for our wedding anniversary last week and as always the food and service were excellent. Do love a curry, but this ( Nepalese) is our favorite around . 💯recommend

Can't fault this place! The food was amazing, with a great selection on the menu, and plenty vegetarian options. The service was fantastic, waiters were attentive throughout. The prices are great for the quality of food. Will definitely visit again when back in the area.

We have visited many times and have always been very happy with the delicious food. The staff are so friendly and helpful, it's good old fashioned service.

Have had my husbands 60th birthday celebration at the Gurkha. Can only praise the service and the food! This curry house is a cut above the norm! Nice surroundings and the staff can’t do enough for you. The food was very nicely presented. We where all served at the same same and everyone loved their delicious dishes. We had an amazing experience at Gurkha!! The food was authentic ! One of the best Curry Restaurants. They were very accommodating and welcoming and the staff was all attentive and helpful!!I would infinitive % recommend everyone to visit this restaurant!! We reached late & last costumer of that day but owner himself served food very warmly and very quick service . Will definitely come back again.

Visited with my family and had a great dinner. The staff was very kind and friendly. The food is delicious specially the Everest Curry dish! No doubts we will be back if we visit Burton again.

I mistakenly ordered from an old menu just using numbers from takeout menu leaflet after ringing Gurkha my correct meal was delivered in less than 30 mins ,curry’s were brilliant , I have a new favourite restaurant

It was my second visit to Gurkha restaurant, again the waiters were extremely nice and the food was so so so tasty. The serving time is quick, the starters are very nice, the curry is well seasoned and so delicious. I recommend you try the traditional Indian ice cream as a dessert :) I can't wait to go back!!

Enjoyed our meal very much. Both curries, one Duck, one Fish were tasty and nicely spiced. Naan bread and rice was good, portions were large, no poppadoms or srarters needed. And to top it off prices were very reasonable.

We came here as family and friends, as part of the help out the eat out scheme. Due to the busy nature of the scheme, we initially had to wait to be seated but it was a warm evening so this wasn’t a problem. We were led to our table/booth and ordered drinks. We ordered starters and mains. Although the restaurant was busy, the food arrived in decent time.Overall it was an enjoyable evening

We booked here after having had a takeaway during lockdown which we enjoyed very much. The restaurant is giving 15% off food in September on a Tuesday and Wednesday which is obviously bringing in guests as when we arrived at 7.30, they were full. I chose chicken Khukuri which came with jeera rice (cumin seeds) which was really tasty and hot enough not to be too hot to eat. My partner chose chicken Lasun Khursani which is a chefs recommendation and he said this was really good too. They don’t seem to cook with ghee so this means that there is less fat to fill you up!All COVID precautions were in place with hand sanitiser, all staff is masks or visors and track and trace details given.A really nice meal and we will definitely go back.

Four of a family ate here on Wednesday 19 August and enjoyed every bite. Made very welcome and given plenty of time to choose our meals. Drinks fetched quickly. Food preparation beyond fault. Fabulous flavour.

Second visit here but first as a couple. Service was fantastic, food was even better, friendly staff and forgiving as we forgot our card and my OH had to get fetch it but they were polite and friendly about it. The salmon tandoori starter was so beautifully cooked. Busy atmosphere but clean, fresh and enjoyable.

We haven't been here since last year (we're not from the area) but last weekend we met up with family for a Sunday evening meal. The food and service were as good as we remembered. It was the first visit for the other family members and they were impressed and said they will visit again. The staff are always very welcoming and it makes for a nice atmosphere. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Arrived without booking and received a friendly welcome. The restaurant was clearly busy and the staff were rushed off their feet. We were showed to our table within 10 minutes which was fine, considering how busy it was, and our food order was taken and served within 20-30 minutes. So far, very good, as usual. Our meals were delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed them, however when it came to pay, service became very slow, taking an age to grab anyone's attention. We went to the bar to pay instead as it was getting late. The waiter barely spoke, took our money and didn't even say thank you as we left, ignoring me again when I thanked him as we left. Normally, Ghurka Lounge is exceptional in every way, but tonight one waiter lacked professionalism and basic courtesy which let the restaurant and the rest of his team down.

Had a takeaway from here last night 29/7 for our anniversary we stayed locally in a yurt . What fantastic food my wife had the best meal king prawn balti top class piping hot everything we ordered was very good Couldn’t recommend highly enough also service on collection was very polite efficient service plus to dine in looked very clean and classy

Sat evening booking, very polite when booking explaining safety for covid. Been a few times now and surpassed expectations. Extremely clean and well organised, Felt very safe. The food was top notch really good!!. Service was perfect,lovely people lovely food 5 stars imo,well done look forward to going again soon.

Having a night away at Burton-on-Trent and fancied a nice meal out. Found the Gurkha via Google and Trip Advisor, and what a find! Loads of choice on the menu, pretty much fancied everything! The veg thali was especially good, washed down with Everest and Gurkha beer. Very attentive and friendly staff. Great value for money. We’re planning another trip down just so we can go back.

This is the first time we have visited the Gurkha Lounge and we were very impressed. The food was exceptional and the service was outstanding. We had the platter for two and enjoyed all of the dishes, so much tasty food to try. When I asked to make a couple of changes to the dishes it was not a problem. Didn’t feel rushed at all the atmosphere was relaxed and can honestly say we can’t wait to return. This is a cut above the average curry house and we’ll worth a visit.

Despite us being a noisy table of 6 adults and 5 kids, the restaurant owner Mr Bal was very welcoming and accommodating. Been served by Mr Ali subtle smiling gentleman. Food was amazing, could have been a bit more spicier but they do offer spicy options if craving for something hot. The speed of service was very good. Restaurant has an ambiance and feel of a nice gourmet dinner.

Not been here before, but great food, kept to the traditional Ghurka choices on the menu and really fresh and lovely flavours. Service spot on as well, despite being packed full.

A group of 7 dined here on Wed night and the whole experience was first class. The staff were very attentive and the food was hot and tasty.

Been here on Friday night it’s busy but service staff give us warm welcome and asking friendly about ordering time.. we have chicken Tika and mixed grilled as starter and main lamb birayani and chicken jelfrezi with naan bread . We feel food was great tasty and great service. We highly recommended for all try its best restaurant for Nepali and Indian food.

Visited the Gurkha Curry Lounge for a business social evening, 16 of us were upstairs and the staff could not do anymore to make our visit any better. The service and food was excellent, we will be booking again.

Visited here about a year ago whilst visiting the area and had a lovely meal. Since then I have developed a high sensitivity to fresh ginger. What could I eat, plain chicken came the response, no thanks I can have that at home. So disappointed there was nothing on the menu I could have and no attempt was made to offer a dish without the offending ingredient. So while my husband and son tucked into their meal, I had a bowl of rice! At the end of the evening the manager came and was very apologetic and suggested I rang ahead next time....! But it was too late by then. The other meals looked good and were enjoyed, but not me. Service was very slow, and at times unhelpful.

We visited the Gurkha last night it was a lovely experience. Staff were lovely very patient and helpful and the food was very nice. Definitely will be going there again .

We ate here for the second time last night ! We were seated upstairs , we were the first ones there but it soon filled up. The selection was brilliant , not your standard curry house! The service was excellent and so was the food , we can’t wait to come again

My first time here, but wont be last. Called in on the off chance fri night, friendly greeting. Poppadom and pickles etc brought out why we looked at menu, a good choice. We had the salmon fishcake and the garlic chilli mushrooms which had a twang to them but they were lovely. We both had chicken tikka masala and pilau rice, chicken one of the best and rice was light and fluffy. Lovely meal and service was great.

This place is never fallen behind , always same service and same taste. I think Nepalese Gorkha food seems a Breyer option in INDIAN Curry. You have proved this in my visit recently. Well done Gorkha team.

Very welcoming and friendly staff. Great menu with some different dishes alongside Indian staples. Had chilli prawn for starters, it was nice but the sauce tasted like tomato ketchup, strange. Main was a Nepalese chicken dish, not a hot as I expected (2 out of 3 chillies on the menu) and a bit bland, never had it before, maybe that's how it's supposed to be, still reasonably pleasant. £30 for 2 courses a pint of cobra and some pupadoms it's hard to knock.

Service was fabulous. All staff said hi, and went the extra mile when necessary to ensure we were comfortable. Plates were super hot, and the food piping. Napkins were folded out for us, and we were given hot towels before and after our meal. Dishes, naan and lassi were delicious! (Would highly recommend lamb karhai) Completely cleaned our plates and had a fantastic time. Seati g area was beautiful too.

Ordered lanb tikka masala, sauce far to creamy and sugary sweet and the lamb was stale and tough, they changed it got chicken but same sweet sauce. Service rushed hadn’t finished popadoms when taken away. Whispered that they haven’t charged for my curry, as if they did us a favour no will not be going back

Had an amazing meal at the Gurkha. Beautiful food and the staff are phenomenal. Staff so pleasant and always willing to help. Brilliant experience. Would 100% recommend.

I had my first Gurkha Curry when I was in the army, I had been invited to a Gurkha new year celebration. My second one was here at the Gurkha Curry Lounge and it was as good as I remember it. Totally different experience than that of it’s India equivalent, its not so heavy the absence of cream make a lot of difference in the sauce which is runnier and in my opinion a healthier option.

This was a superb experience on a busy Saturday night. The meal was fabulous and all aspects were just right. The cobra beer was as good as I can recall.

I had got bored of curries but i have just had a lamb curry at the gurka lounge and my love is renewed it was really taste curry well cooked rice and a well cooked and presented nan

Nothing is too much for the staff here who will make a special effort for celebratory occasions. Food is towards the Asian type but more subtle and pleasing flavours. For dessert, do not miss the Ras Malai!

Went to this lovely restaurant with my 12 year old son during a trip to Alton Towers. We were staying in a Premier Inn not far away and booked after reading great reviews on TA. The food was fresh and very tasty, the service was efficient and polite. It was very busy which speaks volumes.

This was my 4th trip to the Gurkha and we decided to go for the special sharing meal at 35 pound a head including a bottle of wine...which they happily swapped for two lovely pints of Everest Beer.

I went with a group of friends for my birthday late on a Saturday night. The staff were friendly and welcoming and happy to give recommendations. I had a couple of dishes and tried a couple of my friends. All of it was great and the lamb Khukuri I had was one of the nicest things I have ever eaten it was absolutely beautiful. I don't think I'll be going anywhere else when I'm back in Burton now.

All six members of the party had a great meal with excellent service. I had the Gurkha Karai special which was fragrant and fresh tasting with a hint of heat. Wife had the Thali (non-veg) and thoroughly enjoyed the varied menu.

Had a really tasty meal here. Excellent service by Ali who greeted us as we walked in. Good quick service, the food was very tasty, just the right portion size for me.

I only had dinner and ordered it via Just Eat to collect. I found the staff to be friendly and polite. The food was very flavour full, good size portions. Could not complain! Will go again when next in the area!

We’re from Leicester and decided to stay in Burton for the weekend as a birthday getaway. We thought we’d give this place a go. From the moment we walked in the staff were quite rude and didn’t really acknowledge us. I ordered chilli chicken for a starter and it came covered in a thick sugary sauce. No where on the menu did it say it was sweet chilli and usually chilli chicken is spicy not sweet. I couldn’t eat it as I don’t do sweet with savoury and asked the waiter whether he’d given me the right thing and he said yes. When I complained about it being too sweet he said he’d let the chef know and took it away. He didn’t bring another starter out so we ended up paying for a starter I didn’t even eat. The mains weren’t great but were edible, normal curry portion sizes were tiny. The staff were really not attentive and we had to pay for the bill on the way out after waiting for someone to come over for 20 mins. Not the birthday meal I was expecting and absolutely nothing compared to what we are used to in Leicester. I would say try somewhere else if you are thinking about going here for the first time!

The service here is absolutely fantastic such friendly people who always appreciate your custom. Busy periods such as the weekend I would maybe book in advance so as not to disappoint. The food is second to none and having visited several Indian restaurants in Burton this place always comes out on top. Extremely reasonably priced also. Fantastic selection of wines from around the world. I’d definitely recommend the Nepalese dishes! 5 stars!

Ate here on Saturday. Service, food and waiting staff excellent. So good, we booked for the next night. Same quality. Highly recommended. What a shame they were closed on Monday.

I was in the area for 5 days and ate there twice the staff where brilliant and the food out this world I would highly recommend this restaurant.

I have to tell this , you are a truly a Top place to eat in Curry. My last Saturday trip with my family was not in vain , your momo is uniquely tasty, my wife’s lamb curry is perfect - well cooked, spiced just good ! None of us said they didn’t enjoyed it.

We went here on a Saturday evening but had not booked, but they managed to fit us in, as you can imagine it was very busy, but the staff could not have been more attentive.

I have dined in this restaurant as part of a large group and more recently decided to place an order for collection.

Together with my work colleagues we visited Gurkha twice within two weeks as we were really impressed with food and service quality. As in both situation it was last minute booking we really appreciated that the restaurant found space for us. The service was really professional, food delicious with fantastic presentation. I highly recommend to visit Gurkha for true taste of Indian cuisine.

We had lovely meal in the Gurka, the food was great, the service was very good and the ambiance just right. The cleanliness was excellent, I always judge a restaurant by how clean the toilets are and these were good.

Eating in was a great experience. We have dined in several times and always been happy so we decided to try a take-away. Sorry to say we think it's over priced for a take away meal. Whilst there was plenty to eat we feel it was quantity over quality and won't be ordering again, sorry.

Carry out meal for four which would have fed six. Came with popadums and two peshwari nans and pilau rice. Excellent dinner.

Lovely meal full of flavors to savour in a cosy booth . Service was relaxed but attentive ( no rush to move you on) and food as always high quality and well presented.
