We visited the Gunpowder Restaurant on Greek Street in Soho as part of their India Club monthly dining experience. The 6 course menu showcased Hyderabad cuisine. The Kid Goat Keema Lukhmi was excellent along with the Chicken 65, and the Kakori Mutton Seekh and the Sofiyani Dum Biryani with grilled Mirchi ka Salan. Excellent food and excellent value.

Food was so overpriced for what it was. Lamb was charcoaled burnt and very fatty. However the tandoori chop and egg masala were tasty.

My husband and I came to Gunpowder as part of a food tour and I have to say it was our favorite place that we stopped. The pricing was a bit high, but we really did enjoy the food. As part of the tour, we were able to sample a few different dishes as well as a delicious drink called the gin gimlet. My favorite dish was the tiger prawn toast. The staff all seemed very nice and were very welcoming. It was still fairly early when we arrived, so there weren't many people there. All in all, I would go back, so if you're in the area and looking for some good food, albeit a bit higher in price, I would definitely recommend Gunpowder.

I really have mixed feelings about this interesting Indian restaurant. My friend & I walked in without a reservation and the manager did his best to squeeze us in. The set up is very much a French bistrot - very tightly packed tiny tables. The table we were shown to was simply too small for two full bodied gents & we really didn't want to join the conversations of fellow diners. So we asked if we could sit at a sort of bar on high stools. Which was OK until they squeezed two young ladies next to us and inevitably we ended up chatting as they asked us what we were nibbling at (eating would be too generous a word here). If the idea was to promote speed dating here then they achieved their objective - just... We were then provided with the menu and I must admit, my heart sank. The choice was very different from a more classical English style Indian restaurant. Very special, exotic descriptions of mainly small dishes with large prices. My friend and I gulped and decided to share the following - Gunpowder Chat, Spicy venison doughnut, Chettinad duck, pork ribs & Sag Paneer. We also had two, half pint small glasses of draft lager (40 ft Brewery Disco lager) at 4.50 quid each. The food was nice but we only had very modest small portions. Service was quick, friendly and efficient but we left wondering where to go next to eat that evening...

I’ve got to say, the food and service here was excellent, but it’s over priced. You get 1 portion of everything and the portions are mostly small. The concept is good, they do a few things differently which we really liked, some of the curry sauces were delicious. We tried:- Gunpowder Chat (served Luke warm, not to my taste) Tandoori chicken chop (1 small portion but delicious) Egg curry masala (2 boiled eggs slices in half with masala sauce on top, nice but expensive for what it was) Spicy venison doughnut (tasted good but expensive) Mustard malai broccoli (tasted nice but very expensive for a piece of broccoli in a curry sauce) Barnsley lamb chop (delicious, very expensive for 1 chop) Portion of rice (small bowl) This might seem a lot but the portions are single portions and small. For two of us it wasn’t enough, so we ordered a couple of extra portions. No bread available with your food ? Only rice. I thought this a little strange, especially for cleaning up the delicious curry sauces, but this is their concept, no bread. The thing that is fantastic is the rum bread & butter pudding, definitely worth trying, and at £8 it seemed worth it. All in all, we had two small lagers each and the above, and the bill was £158.00. In my opinion it’s massively over priced. I’m sorry guys, it was nice but doesn’t stack up value wise for us. Better portions or reduced prices and we would return.

Stop what you’re doing, get online and book a table at this restaurant immediately! Four of us booked here as one of our usual go to places had shut down. I’d heard very good things about Gunpowder but had no idea how spectacular the food actually was. The four of us were completely blown away by the flavours in the ‘Festive’ sharing menu which consists of….. Gunpowder chaat potatoes Egg curry masala Tandoori chicken chop Goan grilled prawns Mustard malai broccoli Steamed rice Every dish tantalised, woke up, and mesmerised out taste buds, every was mouthful savoured with a shaking of heads in disbelief thinking how can I recreate these flavours at home, you can’t, the chef at Gunpowder is a culinary master with a beautiful imagination. Service was impeccable, charming and attentive with an excellent knowledge. If I’ve not convinced you enough to book a table at this restaurant then, I feel sorry for you, if I have, then you are in for a treat, get online book it now, what are you waiting for? Thanks Gunpowder, we’ll be back sooner than we’d planned!

Not authentic Indian food. Starter cold, yogurt and potatoes and nothing else. Food came out minutes of sitting.. overly spiced and hot. In no way value for money, the feast meal had no breads or naans. Rice smallest portion and didn’t go with the items of the menu provided, chicken was the only half decent thing. For £150 deal this was a rip off. Service was good. Shame about the meal. Avoid.

We came to the restaurant with very high expectations and the end result was very disappointing. We Manu was very lacking with the Indian cuisine. It was very overpriced, 45 pounds for a person, and the meal was just lacking in general. The desert that came with that dish wasn't related to Indian food (chocolate cake) Very disappointing evening and sorry for all the money that I had spent

Decided to give this a go on a night out and I must say it was good and worth the visit. It is priced more than your "average" Indian but this is NOT your average Indian. The menu is limited and we both enjoyed our meals but I would not rush back.

My friends and I went to Gunpowder in Soho last Friday and the food and drinks were absolutely delicious. Especially the soft shell crab, oh my god! Also, our server Abdul made our experience even better! He was so nice and helpful, especially since one of us has a shellfish allergy and he recommended some great dishes for her. I will absolutely be going there again when I go back to London :) ❤️

Seriously overated and way overpriced!! In order to book you need to book, then confirm your booking, then pay a £50 deposit then reconfirm your booking by phone...the hassle makes it feel as if you're going to be dining at a Michelin star restaurant! Unfortunately the food despite being good is similar to what you'd get at most Indian restaurants in London, the service and setting is standard, the portions are small and the price is overinflated. Despite spending £170 betwen four of us, we ended up getting tapas afterwards at a neighbouring restaurant. Overall a disappointing experience unfortunately.

I’d highly recommend the Chicken Tikka Jaipuri; great portion size, plenty of chicken tikka and lovely a spice level. It certainly hit the spot. I dined at 18:15 and the restaurant was quiet but had packed out by the time I left. Consider a booking if you’re going at peak time.

Average given the price. Nothing particularly bad, but given the price the food quality was about average and nothing really stood out as wow, as you would hope for somewhere charging £50/head. On the face of it the decor looks ornate and impressive, but actually when you looked closer the wood panelling looked tired, and in places may have had black mould on the edges of the mouldings. The atmosphere was also somehow cold and lacking warmth and class — it is possible this was due to a poor choice of lighting, mostly overhead and cold in temperature, and not enough side lighting and of a warmer colour temperature. It was also actually cold! It is not clear why the air conditioning would be on and set to such a low temperature in October. It was too cold for my 74 year old mother, but eventually they did provide a small space heater, which greatly improved things. The staff were friendly and helpful — i.e. with the space heater —and the manager honoured the price I was quoted online, which disagreed with the price in the menu in the restaurant.
