Went to a wake in January. Parking and venue were fine. Drinks the usual sort of price I guess. However the food was pathetic (buffet) . Given the money paid and given it was a wake it was terrible. My advice to anyone thinking of using this place for a wake is - DON’T If you do it will upset the day even more

First time visiting after hearing the Sunday lunch was great. Firstly the good points, staff were friendly and the roast beef was excellent and pricing reasonable. Apart from that everything was mediocre. Peas and carrots are about the cheapest vegetables available and even they arrived overcooked and lukewarm. The cauliflower cheese also had the whitest sauce imaginable and definitely had no cheese in it. Starters of prawn cocktail and pate were quite nice as was the chocolate sponge dessert, but I wouldn’t rush back. When I eat out I naively expect a professional chef to provide a meal which is better than I can cook myself.

Friends lunch. When we arrived, staff were serving another customer, one was filling the fridge and another was flitting behind the bar... There was no acknowledgement we were there. Until I asked about a table booking. We were directed to a table, no one asked if we wanted a drink until we asked if we could order one, when a member of staff had delivered food to another table. Drinks came , we ordered food. The salmon I ordered was fine, the salad, uninspiring and the side of vegetables medley, I believe was frozen veg. It was over cooked and soggy. The scampi and chips were average.

Thank you to Kat and her staff at the Grove. They all went above and beyond to make my wedding day really special. Nothing was to much for them. Kat was absolutely incredible and we can't thank them them enough. The Cheese glazing table was a winner for our evening guests. Worked really hard. I've recommended them to everyone I know.

Been here many times and have never faulted the experience. We didn’t book (which is advisable) but they fitted us In overlooking the 18th green. It’s on our local list of places too return to, service is excellent, prompt and friendly. See you again no doubt!

We've passed by this place maby times and always fancied trying it out. We arrived without a booking so was prepared if nothing available. Big table full of golfers eating, waited in reception to see someone, anyone and was ignored for 15 minutes before we left. Pressed the attention button several times but no response.

We needed to find a restaurant for a table of nine at very short notice. I made a call and surprisingly the Grove had space for us. This was a Saturday lunchtime and there were plenty of tables available. The special menu on the blackboard was attractive at £9.95 for two courses. The main course was Salmon and cod fishcakes with new potatoes and peas or ham, egg and chips. These choices suited or party and enjoyed by all. Service was very good. This venue was great for our party of nine and did us well.

We took my uncle here for his birthday. It has been reasonable before but this time it was excellent! I had preordered scampi as I don’t eat meat and it was a huge and hasty portion. My uncle had the salmon which he said was delicious. My husband had the beef and he said was amazingly tender. The service is excellent and the price ridiculously low - I live near Oxford and food is much more expensive!

Really disappointed in our meals, it was always our favourite place but between there was hardly any selection and the meals were tiny and overpriced for frozen chips, tin peas which none of us really ate and the salads were dry. We won’t be going back unfortunately. It was supposed to be a birthday meal but once meals were done we left when normally we will usually stay and have a few more drinks. Disappointing!!

Went to the Grove recently and mixed feelings about the food and service, nice welcome and shown to our table, (4 of us) waitress took our drinks order and then came back to take our food order, I had plumped for the 2 course at £9.95 and ordered the pate then the ham and coleslaw, pate was lovely but a bit too much as it was quite rich, waited quite a long time for all our mains to arrive and this is where the mixed feelings came into play. My mum had the plaice and she enjoyed that, one of my sisters had the turkey in pepper sauce, turkey was tender and plenty of it (but the sauce was more like gravy with peppercorns in it), my other sis had Cajun Hake and she said that was nice, my ham was disappointing as I had asked whether it was home boiled ham but no it was thin ham which you can buy in a supermarket, quite a lot of it but rather tasteless. All meals came with frozen chips and frozen peas and for the price we did expect freshly cooked proper chips!

Visited yesterday for Sunday lunch. It was our first time and our last. The service was shockingly slow. The four of us were given a menu and shown to our table. Half an hour later we were still waiting for someone to take our order. We all ordered soup to start, waited another half hour for it to arrive and when it did it was only luke warm. Another half hour later with empty soup plates still in front of us we has to call someone to clear our table and bring our roasts. Then another long wait before our roasts came out. They were tasty enough but again only luke warm and only one small roast potato each! After we had eaten our dinners nobody came to clear our table or ask if we wanted desserts so after another half hour we had to call someone again to take our plates away. When we were eventually asked if we wanted dessert we all declined as we had already been there for 3 hours! Granted they were busy but you have to book a table so they know how many people are going to dine there. My advice is to employ more staff if you do not want to lose custom. Also, my partner wanted lamb & was told it was all gone but no other table could have been told that as an hour later it was still being served. Never again will we visit!!

I'm absolutely fuming after a visit to the Grove for afternoon tea for my grandmother's 96th Birthday. Although the booking was made two weeks previously, they had no record at all of the booking, therefore there was no table reserved. Their excuse for not knowing about the booking was that they were running two diaries rather than one - and the only compensation was £1 off the cost of each person's food. As a result of not knowing about the booking, the usual cakes that should have been offered (e.g. macaroons) was missing. What a complete and utter disgrace - the cheek of being offered just £1 off for each person as a result of their incompetency!!! As a result of this, I will never recommend the Grove as a place to visit.

Had an early Xmas lunch with about 40 other senior men. The turkey dinner was very tastey. Even though the restaurant was very busy we were all served quickly with hot meals. The chef has won awards and these can be seen hung on the wall opposite the bar area. Ive eaten here before and scorched them by writing personally to the directors saying that a sunday lunch for a group of us was disgusting, cold and the meal came in waves. That was last year. I'm pleased to say that there was no repeat of that disaster. The service and staff were helpful and efficient. The turkey dinner was extremely good.

After much head-scratching over what do you give a sprightly 94 year-old for her birthday we settled on a family afternoon tea. Where? As my wife's mother lives in Porthcawl the Grove Golf Club seemed ideal. Enquiries revealed that they could easily cater for a party of nine on the Summer Bank Holiday 2017. Called in for an evening meal as this place had been recommended by friends. The greeting was friendly and we were seated at a window table with an excellent view. However after being handed the menus it was some while before our order was taken although we did notice people seated after us were being dealt with. The food eventually arrived, and to be fair we had a very nice meal. No real complaints but we had the feeling of being interlopers, it was very difficult to attract the attention of the waiting staff but others who seemed to be on more friendly terms (locals?) had no trouble.A satisfying meal but a more customer friendly attitude to all diners would be appreciated.

I've visited the Grove several times with my friend, who lives locally, either for lunch or for afternoon tea. This time it was lunch, and I'd booked a table for 12 30. When we arrived we were shown to our table immediately. Shortly afterwards I went to the bar to order drinks before our meal, and was asked to go back to the table to be served by a member of staff. This was no problem, except that it became an annoying pattern during the course of the lunch. Unlike most restaurants, where staff usually check at tables whether you want anything else, here you were left to go and ask - for more drinks, for example, or for dessert. Whenever I went to the bar I was told to go back to the table so that my order could be taken there. I wasn't impressed by this; it would have been easier for the person I spoke to simply to make a note of my request and pass it on if necessary. Having gone back to our table, I then had to wait a while for a staff member to come and take what was a straightforward order. When we'd had lunch previously at the Grove we were annoyed to notice that people on a few other tables had arrived after us but had their orders taken before ours. We waited considerably longer for our food to arrive than others did. On that occasion we were prepared to give the staff the benefit of the doubt but, when it happened again this time, we assumed that the very obviously regulars (groups of clearly retired people, probably members) were getting perferential treatment. That's just not good enough when all customers are presumably paying the same prices. The strong point for the Grove is that the food is in quite generous portions. It's cooked perfectly well, but the menu is very unexceptional - all the usual pub menu basics, like fish and chips, steak (just sirloin) , gammon, scampi and lasagne. If you order a roll and butter you'll get a very cheap, bland soft roll from a supermarket multi-pack, with two small catering packets of hard butter which are impossible to spread on the roll. If this is the kind if food that floats your boat, you'll like the Grove. The surroundings are very pleasant. We'd been prepared to give the Grove a good few chances, but we've decided we won't be going back again.

We have visited here many times over the last few years and always have had a most pleasant experience, not this time. I booked a table for Sunday for 4 people at 1400 hrs, we arrived in good time at 1345 hours and were told to take a seat on the outside seating area and we would be called when the table would be ready, after half an hour when no one came to get us I went inside to find out what was happening, the place was extremely full and very busy, I was told that our table was ready and that we should sit and menu's would be brought, which they were. We studied them and decided what we wanted, but no one came to take the order. At 1445 hours I decided to ask what was going on and would someone come to take our order, bearing in mind that this was now an hour after we originally arrived, one of the supervisors came to take the order was quite offhand with us, when we asked why we had been waiting for so long, "we are very busy you know" was what we were told, We could see this , but all we needed was to be kept informed, if they were so busy, why did they accept my reservation?. it grieves me to write this but however busy they were, all we needed to be kept informed. It spoiled what should have been a great day with friends we hadn't seen for some time unfortunately it was spoiled by poor service and a poor attitude. Shan't return .

Party of 20 for afternoon tea. Long table, although we were told that when we go again we should ask for a block table to enable us to have more conversation - personally I think they should either have automatically done that or asked when we booked! We were given 1 pot of tea and 1 of coffee for every 4 people; no milk on table when the pots arrived, so by the time the milk was found the pots were going cold. When someone asked for more tea they were told that it would be added to the bill as the charge only includes a certain amount of tea and coffee - it was then pointed out that several of the pots of coffee had not been touched, so they were rather grudgingly removed and more tea brought - again, why not ask what we wanted before bringing the pots out! One waitress was lovely, but the younger one seemed very sullen, Sandwiches were OK, choice of brown or white with ham & mustard, egg & cheese and a few tuna. Pastries were small and dainty. Scones were not the best I have had and it would have been nice ot have been provided with spoons for the jam and cream rather than having to use those provided for our drinks.

I was surprised how outdated the restaurant area looked. Old fashioned with the full table cloth setting. Looked to formal for a casual lunch and very dated. It would look much more inviting with bare tables with just mats and cutlery . Otherwise the food was great and great customer service especially the Spanish lady.

Visited here for my mother-in-laws birthday. In total there was 7 of us.Started off withe the table - instead of one large table, they put two round tables together. Then it just went downhill from there. The staff wasn't the best - bit too over friendly (calling people darling). The menu was very basic - I ended up having the spinach pasta - I think the chef forgot any seasoning - it was the blandest food I've ever had. My other half had the chicken curry, that looked like the packets you buy for home, and add water to. Plenty of chicken in it, but a bit basic.Other peoples' food wasn't great either. A few wanted mushrooms to start, but they were out - at 7pm on a Saturday....I was also charged £1.60 for a pint of soda water - basically tap water with a bit of fizz added by the machine. Most places don't charge for that, or if they do, it's a few pence. We won't be going back anytime soon. We have had a decent meal there a little while ago, but apparently the management / owners have changed.Don't recommend - no better than a Wetherspoons at double the price

First time in the grove golf club for a meal. Food was great and plenty to eat. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The club was clean and tidy. When we sat down at the table our waitress took our drink order straight away and we did not have to wait to long for our meals. Only one criticism there was a birthday party the same night and the disco they had was very loud. But that's not the grove clubs fault. A most enjoyable meal.

Often travel down from Pontypool for Sunday lunch. Quality excellent for price. Staff brilliant and attentive. They all work really hard. One minor critisism, on last three occassions the accompanying veg has only been just about warm. Please, please can this be rectified. Hot plates would help.

Don't usually write reviews but being a very fussy person, felt this deserved a good review after coming away very happy. Table was booked for 5pm, one of the last tables of the day after what had been an extremely long & busy day for the staff, but service was excellent, all staff friendly and tentative. Roast dinner was delicious, home made tasting, plentiful, hot and fresh. Deserts and coffee also lovely. Tables cleared very quickly, everything spotlessly clean and comfortable. Will definitely return as all the family (2 children, 2 adults and one elderly) very much enjoyed - thank you all :-)

I went here with my partner on a Thursday evening because of a groupon voucher. The service was very good and fast. We both had mushrooms for starters which were delicious and came with enough bread to soak up the lovely sauce. Steak for main course was also very nice and cooked just as we had asked I was impressed. The only thing that let the food down for me was the chips as they were your standard frozen style chips you get and not homemade. But you did get plenty of them which is nice. The decor In the restaurant is a bit dated and the lighting was quite bright making it lose a bit of atmosphere.Overall very nice meal and I would recommend

We took advantage of Groupon vouchers to try breakfast and afternoon tea at the Grove.Breakfast was generous. freshly cooked and nicely presented. It's great value at the standard price of £5.95. Being picky, I'd rather have one really good sausage than 2 that were okay, but otherwise is was fine. Coffee/tea are included, and a pot not a cup with refills added. I'm pretty sure the coffee was instant, but drinkable anyway. I'm sure we'll go again for breakfast. The afternoon tea was fairly standard fare. Not especially luxurious, but the Prosecco was lovely and there were lots of strawberries garnishing the cakes which was a nice extra touch. The biggest disappointment was the cold shop bought scones; they were fresh but nothing special although the generous amount of jam and cream helped a bit.The best thing on both occasions was the service, Very friendly and efficient, andwould definitely encourage me to return to try their main menu.

Ok it was maybe the first sunny day since time began ( in Wales anyway). And we did have the best seat in the house...( overlooking the green and the Swansea bay beyond). But - my o my what a splendid afternoon tea. I love those silver stands and all the little dainty morsels and to top it off a couple of strawberries in the prosecco ! I'm not sure whether this is available every day ( we got ours from Groupon ) but if you are an afternoon tea fan I would imagine this was a great way to spend those rare sunny moments in South Wales.

I had high hopes for the food at the Grove Golf club having read reviews. What a disappointment, decidedly average. We visited with friends for an even and we decided to have a bar meal there as well. I had lasagne which was presented in a dish on a diner plate with a side of salad and peas. It tasted OK but there wasn't much pasta amongst the sauce.

I first went here for Afternoon tea with friends. It was delicious, endless pots of tea and when one of the group asked for extra sandwiches they were delivered straight away and with no extra charge.I was so impressed we went for lunch as a family the following weekend.Great friendly helpful service.Loads of food and lovely puddings. We were totally stuffed! it's a lovely light restaurant with super views over the golf course. Tables are well spaced out which helps as my Mum is quite elderly and walks with a stick. I would go back to try the Sunday lunch here. We thought everything was reasonably priced too.

Had a family Sunday lunch. Very quick and friendly service, reasonable portions but could have done with extra vegetables. That said, veg was very tasty and not over cooked. Gravy was excellent. No childrens menu but Sunday roast available for kids too.

had a cream tea with prosecco here via a offer on groupon for £13.99 for 2 people, the staff are really friendly and it is a lovely place overlooking the golf course, we had a pot of coffee between two and a three tier stand with various sandwiches salmon, egg and mayo, cheese and branston and ham and mustard which were nice, two scones and jam and cream, and a few other small cakes, a small glass of prosecco each, it was a nice treat for the price we paid but was not very filling, i would not pay full price for it as i dont see it worth what i pain with wowcher even, did enjoy but thought it would have been better than it was.

We visited for lunch with our 4 month and 21 month old. The staff were very friendly and there was plenty of room to house us and all the kit that comes with a young family. Food was good and very reasonably priced, our 21 month old had a small Lasagne and really enjoyed it. Would recommend to families with young children.

We had afternoon tea at The Grove on a very wet and miserable day. We turned up early and the staff were very friendly and helpful... even getting a plaster and lots of sympathy for our injured child! The drinks were served to us immediately. A large pot of tea for me, large pot of decaff coffee, a mocha and a hot chocolate. The large pots were a nice touch as it is often annoying having to wait for top ups. My daughter loved her hot chocolate which was creamy and chocolatey and really hit the spot after a wet morning in Porthcawl. The afternoon tea of sandwiches, cakes and scones was all delicious. The Grove was a lovely setting too with what would be beautiful views over the course of the weather would cooperate! We had a very enjoyable afternoon there.

Went there on a Saturday to celebrate my mums birthday. I had prebooked which I recommend for bigger parties. The food was fabulous, all 7 of us enjoyed our meals. As I’ve been before and know the portion sizes are big we skipped starters and only a few managed dessert! The staff are good, different to the staff I usually see on my mid week visits. They are brilliant and the ones today were good too.

Popped in for lunch and enjoyed beautifully cooked hake and chips with all the trimmings and a really tasty build your own pizza. Thanks to all the team and especially Sian for going the extra mile to make sure that our dining experience was perfect.

Have visited this establishment a number of times. Now rebranded as 1832 Came for Sunday lunch on 07/07/24. When we booked we didn’t realise this date coincided with a 10K event. Travelling from Penarth and finding parking difficult meant we were a little late for our booking. Nevertheless we were greeted with a good welcome and very good service. The roast was well presented and tasty. It was of a portion size which enabled us to have a tempting desert. Well done team 1832 on a very busy day for you.
