Food fine, plenty of room, a bonus no music playing so could talk

Excellent choice for a meal and a pint

I have been dining at the Grosvenor Arms for almost 30 years and not had a bad meal. Today, I had a shocker. I had the mixed roast, beef and Pork, my partner the roast Pork. Cauliflower cheese cold and lumpy, cheese not melted, no sauce all dried. Pig in blanket cold, meet cold, gravy tasteless and cold, potatoes airing on the side of not being cooked, no pork crackling on my plate or on the Pork roast. Service, we were not asked if we enjoyed the meal, otherwise I would have commented at the time..... so disappointed.....

Service was terrible. Most staff did not smile, food was passed over the table rather than place in front of customer. Staff were rude. Had to ask for menus, drinks and plates to be cleared. Chicken Coq Au Vin had gravy rather than white wine sauce as advertised. For someone who is local, this is disappointing.

Be sure to reserve, otherwise there will be no space. There are "time zones" because it is very crowded here. The braised lamb shoulder is excellent, the side dishes are a bit limited, but they were added free of charge upon request Unfortunately there is only one vegetarian dish, which is also good. Very friendly service.

Beautiful family meal, lovely busy pub atmosphere! Very limited vegan menu but the Dahl which was on the menu was a delicious dish. Chicken burgers also went down a treat around the table. Some parts of the Resturaunt are dog friendly. Highly recommend

Absolutely love this place always good food and a really nice atmosphere.

We hadn’t been here for awhile so we were looking forward to a special treat and we weren’t disappointed. Friendly and helpful staff and gorgeous food. Hope it won’t be so long before we go again

Disappointing and poor value Visited on a Saturday, late afternoon. We were a larger table of 10 extended family. Found the staff to be kind of evasive, lots of people wiping and laying nearby tables but not coming over to take an order. We waited c20 mins to order drinks. Food was generally poor and high-priced. £30+ sirloin steak must have been 1:3 fat. My son’s children’s burger wasn’t cooked - literally stained the bun with red juices which is not ok for a burger. It took almost 20 minutes for them to bring another one out, and only after being asked where it was. The new one that came was shrivelled and dry. £250 meal and was poor value and poor service.

Very friendly staff and a warm welcome. Good variety on menu. Dog friendly area which is fine if your doggy is under control.Unfortunately meal enjoyment spoiled by a noisy barking dog which the owners ignored. Staff very nice. Service a bit slow. My crispy beef salad had tasty ingredients although too much sweet chilli sauce for me.

Just returned from a lovely Sunday lunch at The Grosvenor and had the most delicious roast. Everything was perfectly cooked. I am often disappointed with pub roast dinners but this one was spot on! We had a lovely table by the fire and the service was so attentive too! The Manager and his staff certainly know what they’re doing here. Thank you!

Part of the Pant-yr-Ochain, Architect and Harkers family. Large spacious pub with menus printed daily. Nice staff with a good choice of food and drinks. I had the bangers and mash, my girlfriend had the cheese and onion pie - mine was good, with the cheese pie being delicious. Keenly priced for such quality. (Stars based on Pub dining). 22/12/24- update, return visit- thoroughly enjoyed, we were also treated to carol singers whilst we ate- fab atmosphere.

Just had a drink in this pub for the first and last time. The gentleman who served us needs to find a new job. Talk about miserable. The beer was flat and tasteless, as was his attitude. A smile and politeness costs nothing.

We were hungry on our way to Chester and stopped here on a whim. What a lovely find! The bar/restaurant had a beautiful, cosy atmosphere. The bar and waiting staff were friendly. Also, there was a bonus dog, Peggy (I am not sure if she lives in the pub or belonged to a local/regular, but she was so precious!). I didn't fancy any of the vegan mains on the menu. However, there was a Christmas menu that looked more like a bit of me, but it was quite dear, and I didn't intend to spend a lot. So I decided to have a starter (I had the pumpkin, sage, and pearl barley risotto with toasted seeds and crematta) with some chips on the side. The risotto was easily one of the tastiest risottos I've ever had. It was so creamy and flavourful! I wasn't a fan of the chunky chips as they were a little too hard for my liking, I wish I got the fries instead. My partner had the Appleby's Cheshire cheese, onion, and potato pie, with green vegetables and white wine mustard sauce. He said it was the best pie he's ever had, and he isn't even veggie or vegan! I was pleased that they had oat milk available for their hot drinks. Also, the tea was Yorkshire Tea which is a real winner in my eyes! It's a shame we don't live near Chester as we had a really lovely experience and would like to eat here more often.

Big family lunch. Food is quite fancy and not cheap of course. The pork was delicious with lots of veg and beautiful potatoes. The mushroom Kyiv was good apparently. A good range on the children's menu including steak. My starter of partridge suet pudding didn't taste of alot tbh. Banoffee trifle was delicious and not too sweet. Service was good. Crackers were good too.

A warm welcome from staff and all who served us were polite and courteous, food was good (Sunday roast Beef) and choice of beers very good. Although it's not a reflection on the service may I kindly request that the management insist onregulars who take their dogs keep them on a lead or at least be attentive to were their pet is as having a dog sit at your table and watch you eat is rather off putting whilst the owner socialises. Better still take a leaf out of your sister pub Harkers in Chester and not have dogs in the establishment at all or at least not have them roaming around were food is served.

Outstanding from start to finish. Despite the venue being very busy, the level of service was exceptional. The starters and mains were superbly presented and of excellent quality and served in a timely and very pleasant manner. Additionally, the cask beer offering was in perfect condition . The staff is what makes a good pub and the three or four members of staff we spoke to were lovely and then of course the food @stephw22 had the Crispy Beef Salad and I went for the Pulled Beef Brisket Cottage Pie. Always friendly and efficient team with excellent meals at reasonable prices. We also enjoyed the drinks particularly the Weetwood Eastgate bitter. Plenty of parking.

Excellent lunch with friends, £45 for 3 courses, drinks and coffees. Food was as described on the menu, the food and plates hot. Attentive staff.

We had absolutely lovely Sunday Roasts today at The Grosvenor Aldford. As a party of 6 , we had a selection of the different roasts on offer and each was delicious. Great friendly service , in a warm and welcoming pub , on a rainy Sunday evening. A good time was had by all.

Back to its best. Service and food are much better than the last time we visited 😋

We’ve been here a few times and we always enjoy the pub, the people, the service and of course the food. The chef is very creative and we’ve enjoy many of their creations. We’d be back🤓

Hats off to the Grosvenor Arms Aldford. Had a delicious meal there today the staff were so friendly and helpful especially Mike. They tweaked a meal for me as I’m gluten and dairy intolerant and it was a pleasure to go there. Thank you!

A Brunning and Price house is a usual stop for something to eat. We we were made welcome and the service cannot be faulted. It was good to see a real fire on a cold and wet evening! Special praise must be given for the Cottage Pie (pulled beef brisket) this was truly delicious and a credit to the chef. A generous sized pie which we hope to enjoy again.

10 friends out for Saturday lunch. We've had some dreadful get togethers at other venues, mainly down to the food. Everybody was delighted with the food, friendly staff, and the Grosvenor Arms itself. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the lovely staff waiting on our table. We all agreed we would go there for future get togethers. A very good experience all round.

Unusually for us we chose a starter and a main instead of pudding as the choices looked enticing. I had pumpkin and sage tortellini, butternut squash purée, caper and lemon dressing which was absolutely delicious (possibly the best starter I have ever had) and Frances had crispy squid with sweet chilli mango which she really enjoyed too. For mains she had game suet pudding (clean plate) and for me the pan fried sea bass, chorizo and chickpea cassoulet with saffron aioli was really good. Top notch. Service was as always impeccable. Somebody always notices and acknowledges when we come in (even though you were all busy). The atmosphere was great. We caught our bus back too! But we noticed your board games etc on the way out and may catch a later bus next time.We used a gift voucher kindly provided by our son-in-law as he knows we love the Grosvenor Arms. We have only just moved to Chester, and it is proving the right decision. Thank you very much...

I hesitated to write this because we’ve always had positive experiences here over the years. We’ve been regulars for literally years, so it felt unfair to suddenly write a less favorable review. However, our recent visit left us feeling uncomfortable and disappointed. Upon arrival, instead of receiving a warm greeting, we were questioned about the special request we’d made on our reservation, which made us feel judged and awkward. We were seated at an overly large table, so much so that we felt distant from each other. When we politely asked to move, the alternative offered wasn’t much of an option, leaving us feeling like we were an inconvenience. What made it worse was that there were plenty of other tables that remained empty for most of our meal. Throughout our visit, the service felt impersonal. There were no smiles when our meals were served, and we had to get up to request the bill after waiting a long time, despite staff attending to others nearby. When we paid, there was no offer of vouchers, and we were handed the receipt so quickly that we didn’t even have a chance to ask. We had to approach another staff member to inquire about them. There was no goodbye, no “hope you enjoyed your meal” – nothing. We simply left feeling unwelcome. The whole experience left us feeling uneasy, and we found ourselves overcompensating by smiling and being overly polite in hopes it would change the atmosphere – but it didn’t. To be clear, we weren’t difficult or rude, and the food was as good as always. Please keep in mind that everyone has their own challenges, and sometimes special requests are made to help us feel more comfortable. A warm welcome and a genuine smile can make all the difference, and in this case, that was sorely missing.

The best restaurant ive ever been to no joke the staff where unreal we where served of 4 different people went above and behind the food fresh cooked no micro rubbish The pulled pork starter and lamb was out this world Ive never enjoyed a meal like it my only regret is i never ordered a 2nd plate of lamb The beers where top class to 10 out of 5 for me

Very nice, surprisingly large portions, the cost is high it means we would only be able to eat out once/twice a year. The pension won't stretch that far especially after the Starmer cuts. However if you can afford it, enjoy.

We’re regular customers who go in spite of the food. Quality of food is very disappointing. We have found their steaks I edible as well as other items.

Went with family on Sat night. Been several times but getting bored now with same menu and high prices. It's always busy so must appeal to some but found everything so overpriced. Waited an hour for food to arrive. We are busy we were told! Food was nice I suppose. Only come here because it's near my Dad's and we pick him up. So if u like the same menu week in week out and don't mind paying a lot then go here.

Very good spot for a meal in comfortable and pleasant surroundings. Plenty of tables both inside and out (we had booked a table), good beer garden, and dog friendly (they are also allowed inside in one section). Service was first class throughout, and staff very attentive. Good menu options, and well priced. There were four of us (plus one dog), and all enjoyed a main course and a pudding (well not the dog, he just had sausages)! Nice big car park, easy access, highly recommended eaterie.

Lovely helpful staff (excellent recommendation for the Whitley Neill blackberry gin!) Great service and delicious food. Both the Cheshire cheese tart and the Kedgeree were superb !

We came since it was my birthday and four of us including granddaughter had a lovely meal with great service and in a superb pub with lovely gardens. We have just moved to Chester and already the Grosvenor Arms is our goto pub for a nice meal. We look forward to walking there sometimes.

Wanted Hake for main meal but was told that not avaliable. Ordered fish and chips. Bad decision. Tastless. Not cooked. Terrible. Will not be returning here again. Atmosphere was non-existent. Maybe it was a quiet time. Prices very expensive even with vouchers.

It seems that it escaped the attention of the numerous managers that on a beautiful summer's evening, there might be an increase in customers..... So, perhaps the layers of local, area or whatever suited managers should pay more attention to staffing levels and customer care rather than profit levels..

The Grosvenor Arms is a gem that never disappoints. The food is amazing and the staff even better. We always have a great experience.

Lovely celebration lunch. Friendly atmosphere, lovely setting, great choice of tasty food which was well presented.

Lovely place. Good sized car park. Great selection of food and drink (including gluten free and vegan). My fishcake dish was just delicious.The bill was very reasonable. It was the perfect place to catch up with friends. I would highly recommend and cannot wait to return.

Fabulous traditional English pub serving THE BEST roast dinners! Caters very well for food intolerances/allergies. Great service and family friendly atmosphere.

Lovely hotel and staff will definitely stay again when in the area. The spa facilities are great with a genuinely good steam sauna, if it’s not steaming ask a member of staff to show you how to set it off, takes less than 30sec to steam up. The Palm Court restaurant is a great place for an evening meal, though a little hit and miss on a Sunday if you don’t want the carvery.

It is one of the best places for a meal. I've been visiting for over 20 years with business guests and family and have always had a great meal.

Six colleagues meeting up for a social evening. We enjoyed excellent service, food and drinks by friendly, professional people in delightful surroundings.

Lovely country brunning and price pub. Same great service as all their other pubs. Great Sunday menu and the Sunday roast as usual excels. Fab Yorkshire puddings, and always happy to oblige with extra gravy. Too full for a dessert afterwards. Tea always comes with a small flapjack, this week's were really good. Gardens are nice, plenty of outside seating and the usual tractor for the children to play on. Highly recommend.

Thoroughly enjoyed visit with the family to celebrate my wife’s Birthday. Very accommodating with a high chair available for our grand daughter.Excellent service, meal most enjoyable

We enjoyed a lovely walk from Eccleston to the pub for a light lunch and back again in the sunshine. I'd highly recommended it...even if I do like embarrassing my Mrs when her glasses fall down her face!

We had a very nice evening meal at the Grisvenir Arns this week.

We always enjoy Brunning and Price establishments, and whilst it has been many many years since we were last in the Grosvenor, today the food was exceptional. We started with black pudding and whipped goats cheese. Followed by kedgeree and linguine. I finished with a tiramisu. All were delicious.

Lovely pub in lovely surroundings. Service however was extremely slow.

Excellent meals, service was bit slow- hence 4 stars, but they were extremely busy. Dogs welcome, staff very friendly and no tip automatically added - which we found refreshing given most places add it on now with a clause you can 'ask' to have it removed 😏! Would 100% recommend

We were a party of 20 people to celebrate an 80th birthday. The lady who looked after us was so calm, accommodating and ensure the whole party’s needs were met. Wonderful service which added to the occasion; thanks to all the staff involved.

Food is lovely as were the staff. Classy yet not a pretentious restaurant. Had to wait a long time for dessert so when the bill came they knocked the price off. Not many places would do that and it was much appreciated.

Really disappointed with the service and quality of food we received today Thursday 11th January 2024 at the Grosvenor pub in Alford Chester . Took 40 mins for our meal to arrive … wasn’t advised the delay on food ? When it arrived the plates were piping hot as well as the food …. Clearly had been put under some sort of heat to keep warm but was a slightly dried up !! Then ordered coffee and small pudding ,received the coffee without the complementary flap Jack , which was disappointing when had seen them coming out ! When asked was told they had run out …had to 2 female staff where the pudding was after 30 minutes for a bite size dessert to arrive, which was after coffees had been finished . Attitude of the female staff was very no understanding and left us feeling , not wanting to rush back soon … which is very disappointing, as we have been going to this pub for 10yrs or more we felt invisible even had to wait to pay bill staff passing and not asking . Really upsetting experience ! Customer service was poor today Grosvenor Arms ! Not normally like that !

A group of us booked a table for new Years Eve 2023/4 & to also celebrate my Birthday. Often the food at this time of year is rushed,cold or not as good as usual. Justin and his crew provided a brilliant meal, tasty, hot and plentiful with the usual pleasant staff providing a brilliant service. The band was fantastic with everyone enjoying a wonderful evening! We have been visiting the Grosvenor Arms for years and I’m afraid it is now very poor compared to the days when Brunning and Price only had a handful of local pubs. We had the Christmas menu and were very disappointed with undercooked veg and dry turkey (albeit a lot of it). Service was very poor and while I don’t object to well behaved dogs in country pubs per se, I do find it off putting spending a lot of money on a meal with a dog constantly yapping at the next table. We have been to the Grosvenor Arms for Cfristmas Day Lunch in previous years but am glad we haven’t booked this year especially at £94.95 a head.

We were having lunch with our friends today, and we had a great time. The service was spot on, and food was very good, served hot. As it is the festive season, the place was packed and very busy. We had the 3 course Christmas menu, and we were all full to the brim. Definitely recommend the Grosvenor Arms in Alford. Anne Williams
