Came in on a Wednesday evening about 2 hours before they closed, wasn’t majorly busy, only wanted a few takeaway dishes and service was shocking made us feel so uncomfortable. Stood for 5 minutes with staff walking by us like we were invisible and then asked if we were “ok”. Told abruptly that they weren’t doing food for the rest of the night and that was that, no explanation or apologies. Such a shame as the food is amazing but being made to feel like a hassle as a customer is not great.

They were really busy on a sunny weekend but the food was so average despite sounding nice and being quite expensive. For example ordered bacon and it came out burnt but hidden under stuff so either chefs don't care or don't know what they're doing. Drinks were nice but again expensive - over £4 for a standard coffee seems high.

Finally visited after wanting to go for a while! Great food but they were out of/couldn’t do a couple of things we wanted. I got a chicken katsu wrap and my boyfriend got a buttermilk chicken stack on French toast. We got some cakes as well which were fab! Note: it’s walk ins only and can be a long wait sometimes.

First time ever to say I was disappointed today. Food took so long to come out and when it did it was cold. To be told my baked potato would have been cold due to choosing a cold topping was an insult to say the least. Usually I buy cakes to take home but not on this occasion!! You pay the prices for a good service as well as product, today unfortunately was not the case. 😞

The location is excellent with views of the harbour and parking is readily available. Unfortunately that’s where the positives stop. Both the food and service were very poor. The wait time for the food was extremely long even after we had to ask if they had forgotten us. The food was cold when it did arrive and wasn’t properly cooked, either too much or not enough. The soup was so disgusting and cold neither of us could eat it and the waitress took it away. By way of apology they did remove it from the bill and gave us free tea and coffee but that doesn’t really work - what should have been a pleasant lunch was wasted. I had gone there on a recommendation from a friend. I wish I had read the reviews before going there as we are not the only ones to have such an unsatisfactory experience.

My friend and I are elderly. To start with we had to wait an absolute age to get our food. I wish they would serve smaller portions as the ones served were far too much and the plate was left only partially eaten. No one ever asks why you left so much food. Also the prices are extortionate for a sandwich and a cup of tea for two came to over£30. I might add that the tea was cold.

Lovely atmosphere and a beautiful setting. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent—great quality and generous portions. However, the experience was let down by how busy it was. We waited over an hour for our food with little to no communication from staff, which was frustrating. The front of the restaurant was packed with both diners and people waiting for takeaway orders, making it quite chaotic, especially for those seated near the entrance. It’s clear that Gro is trying to balance sit-in and takeaway orders, but from our experience—and echoed in other reviews—the long wait times are a major issue for dine-in customers. Even simple drink orders were mixed up. A possible solution could be to direct takeaway customers to an online ordering and click-and-collect system. Limiting the number of simultaneous orders might also give the kitchen and staff a better chance to manage the flow. Overall, it’s a lovely place with lovely people and delicious food—but things felt a bit out of control. Hope to see it all running more smoothly next time!

What an amazing cafe! This place has it all for all ages. This was my first visit, but not friends with me. They are regulars. We were very lucky to get a table, all being out side. However, the heaters were on and cushions and blankets available, so we were very cosy! We were only have a scone and coffee, may not like to sit in that environment for a meal, but would in the warmer months. They except dogs and a play area for the children. Only negative thing is that there selection of cakes was very varied, hard to choice wich one I wanted. We ended up sharing a selection, score! Pop in if you can, but try and book a table and you will not be disappointed. ☕️🍰🧁

I’m so disappointed because I’ve been here many times before. But this time I went with my friends and when we arrived, we stood for a while before someone said “if it’s to sit in, you can sit anywhere?!” Which to me was already rude. We decided to sit outside as it was a lovely night, however it took 20 minutes for someone to come over to take just the drinks order. There was barely any staff outside to tend the tables which was highly frustrating as we were ready to order almost right away. It then took another 20 minutes for 4 drinks to come to the table, to which 2 of them were WRONG. We asked to order as soon as the drinks arrived because we didn’t want to wait any longer. We order 4 simple meals which arrived 25 minutes later, however they brought out the wrong flavour of pizza, and the chicken strips were so dry and stale we had to send them back. I’m so sad to be writing this review as I used to speak so highly about this place but it was absolutely horrendous. The girl at the bar seemed to be juggling about 10 orders at once, which I appreciate they may be short staffed, but there was no way I was paying £84 for the bill, she kindly removed the chicken strips and said “I’m not sure what’s going on today” as we noticed another table had also sent food back next to us. Seems like it’s just going downhill unfortunately.

Very disappointed with our first visit to Gro Ayr. We visited for a late lunch and although it was busy, we were seated right away. We waited a full 20 minutes to then be attended to and only because I caught the attention of one of the servers. Our order was taken and then we waited a further 45 minutes at which point I had to enquire about our order. During this time, many servers had passed our table not once asking whether or not we had been served or needed any assistance. By this time the cafe was much quieter as it was around 3.30. We were told our sandwich order often takes a while, but this seemed an unreasonable length of time to wait especially as we hadn’t even been served drinks. The new server went to find out about the wait and I could see her checking with the girl who took our order originally. There were a few conversations between the two, but at no time were we updated as to what was happening. After a further 10 minutes we decided to leave, really frustrated with the experience. The length of waiting time was the biggest issue, however the service and lack of interaction was so poor. Having received the opposite experience at the Irvine Gro, this was so disappointing.

Recently went to Gro on Sunday for brunch and had a fantastic time as always! The wait time was 1 hour which was suspected as it is always so busy, although waited roughly about 1 hours 10 mins and received call when table was ready. Place is really packed with people sitting and waiting for takeaway. For food we had got Mediterranean eggs and the American, food seemed as if it had been sitting out for a while and some things were cold although was still nice. Also dog friendly and have a selection of sides that can be given to dogs. They do a lovely vanilla oat latte as well! I think at the weekend it can be rather overwhelming as it is so packed but well worth the wait. On the way out I grabbed an empire biscuit and a biscoff cinnamon bun which were just absolutely amazing. Good selection of cakes and they always seem to go quite quickly! Lovely day out by the beach and food in gro. Would recommend!

Came for brunch/lunch today. Food really good, service on the slow side but given how INSANELY busy it was, (our table was at 1200 midday on a Saturday, so not a big surprise 🤷🏻‍♂️) Nice atmosphere, we brought our wee dog, seems like everyone else brought theirs too. Was very lovely! The only feedback point I have is on the furniture and fittings side, we had two very low seats at a small driftwood type table, would have been ok for just a coffee but seriously uncomfortable trying to eat a meal at it. Will deffo come back, but will ask for an adult sized table and chairs next time… soooo many more things on the menu that we want to try 😋

I was recommended to visit GRO and had high expectations. When we arrived, we were told that a table for two would be available in 30 minutes. After waiting, we checked back, only for the manager to give us an attitude and say we needed to wait another 30 minutes. Since we were already there, we ended up waiting a full hour. When we finally got seated and placed our order, it took another hour for the food to arrive. In total, we spent two hours just to get burgers. I don’t mind waiting for good food, but the manager’s attitude was ridiculous—she acted like we should feel lucky to even be there. Overall, very disappointed. Food is great and the staff are generally all fantastic, but for a coffee shop, no one seems to know how to make coffee. I remember when it first opened and the coffee was great, it was so nice to have a place that did a proper espresso. But it's went downhill over the years, to the point that it seems like the training is done in house by people who have learned how to use an espresso machine from someone who doesn't understand it. The fastest way to ruin a good coffee is to brew it badly, and that's what is happening here. I had an Americano the other day that tasted like it was a reused puck. It was so weak it was almost clear. I really recommend that you look into some proper barista training, it's chemistry, not simply pouring a mug of filter coffee.

No discount or refund. Wasn’t an enjoyable experience and first time I had brought my Dad after wanting to visit for a long time. Overall a bit disappointed would’ve had a more pleasant time inside and if the hot chocolate was hot! Fully understand its a busy wee place but wait was longer than what would be reasonable and others who were seated after us were served food before us. The main issue was the amount of people who stood right up at our table and dogs that came up to our table. Families waiting to pay on the floor backing up to where we were sitting on a low table and some people with multiple dogs, which im indifferent to but it was getting annoying. This place presents beautifully, but unfortunately there is a lot of style over substance. Three of the 4 dishes ordered did not have all of the components (ie ice cream missing from one dish etc). When I asked politely about it, the server seemed a bit irritated that I had pointed this out, did not apologise, but did sort out the issues, after some delay. One of the dishes was forgotten about, so my son got his food way after the rest of the party. Not for the Neurodiverse, this cafe is a sensory overload nightmare. Extremely loud music is played from speakers around the restaurant, the bass is turned up to max, it's like being in a nightclub. There's two effects of this: one the staff behind the bar are busy dancing and singing along, two the customers cannot hear eachother and have to shout across the table to be heard. My family resorted to actually texting eachother to communicate from the other side of the table! The waitress couldn't in fact hear anything we said and we had to point to what we wanted on the menu. Evidently this wasn't enough and she still got our order wrong. Really the noise in the place was insane, and that was with my earphones in. They've packed the place full of tables and there's no where separate for takeout customers to wait. So those customers crowd around the tables of the eating customers. Cheek by jowl and all bumping into eachother. Half of our food order was wrong and inedible, the other side was very nice. But I won't be back, it was way too noisy and the wait for food was very long.

Service was good. However, it is a bit too cramped inside. I feel like there is no privacy. I could hear the table next to yours entire conversation. My eggs were a bit runny, my bacon was meant to be crispy definitely not crispy and the bloomer was burnt. The quality of food was amazing, the black pudding, Haggis and sausage were all exquisite. The banana and honey milkshake and cakes were excellent.

Been to Gro a few times now but unfortunately would not go back after this mornings experience.. waited nearly an hour for breakfast and when it arrived it was freezing cold, sent back and instead chose something I thought would be quick and “easy” - toast and scrambled eggs.. eggs were either cooked in a microwave or left too long in a hot pan as they were like polystyrene! best part of the meal was the toast.. over priced for what it is. Real shame as we used to enjoy going here before a walk on Irvine beach.

Really nice place. Can get very busy so may have to wait sometimes. Waitress very helpful. Weather was great so we sat outside at the tables at the back of the building.

Have been several times before, food always good but service very slow, plenty tables available. Waited a while eventually someone came and took a drink order which didn’t arrive very quickly the person bringing the drinks who was different from the person taking the order took our food order which again took for ever, there was lots of waiting staff hanging about the bar chatting. The same issue when waiting for the bill eventually had to go to the bar to ask for the bill and pay. None an easy process, there were two of us in for a quick snack. We were in the restaurant nearly two hours. Some attention should be given also to the toilets these are a disgrace doesn’t matter how busy, with as many staff standing about doing nothing. Very disappointing as I like the food choices and love the cakes but won’t be back.

My wife and I stopped in for 2 cappuccinos. We were ignored for over 20 minutes. I finally got the attention of a staff member and ordered. 20 minutes later we received our cold cappuccinos. I felt as if we had somehow offended the staff with our presence. We were quiet and respectful to all. We struck up a friendly conversation with a pleasant Polish couple next to us, Staff visited them 3-4 times and didn't even look at us. Very frosty.

Fantastic find in Irvine on the Harbour, very busy , so booking would be advisable. We were seated with our two Dogs outside ( there is a covered area for when weather is inclement), but we enjoyed the warm temperatures, and sat outside . Dog friendly, which is always a Plus+ Service was efficient, and friendly . Was amazed at the number of cakes and pastries on display inside - all looked handmade and absolutely delicious. The side of GRO Coffee looked very cosy and inviting , but alas very busy . There is a small Children’s play area outside where parents can chose to either play and monitor their own children , or sit , eat , and drink whilst other guests entertain their little darlings ( which seems to be the way throughout the UK hospitality industry when children are involved ). Overall and delightful place for coffee, and cake ( Along with a very inviting menu for savoury foods ) , as we chose cake and coffee ( see pictures. ).

Really enjoyed a relaxed visit here last weekend. Nice people, comfy seats, only had a snack and soft drink but it was so very relaxing after a hard day at the beach. Recommended for a relaxing restful time. I'll be back

Great dog friendly cafe! Make sure to visit before you get to the beach as the waitlist can be upwards of an hour.

Service was very slow, admittedly this was a busy Saturday lunch time but 15 mins to take order and then 35 mins for food to arrive. Friendly though. Food mostly good - one dish - Mediterranean eggs had clearly been sitting for a time as lukewarm at best. Tattie scones on full breakfasts torched - under the hot plate? But apart from that the dishes were decent. I think maybe their menu is too big, it’s giant and kitchen struggling with everything. Maybe focus on 7/8 breakfast/brunch options and offer takeaway rolls etc. Coffee very average. For all their organic claims, adding 60p for non-dairy milk is a bit steep in 2024. Wouldn’t rush back but wouldn’t rule it out. It’s also absolutely rammed with dogs so if you have an aversion to that, I’d look to go elsewhere.

Great place and delicious food!!! So delicious if someone serves it to you. After 45 minutes of waiting for hamburgers we just left. Customers sitting next to us also left without ordered food!!!. Waitress with blond hair outside in the garden was rude and unpleasant. (7.09.24 at 5.30 pm)!

Really poor experience unfortunately today at Gro Irvine. We sat outside and had to wait about 20mins for a menu, a further 15 minutes passed before our order was taken. We were sat for over 50minutes before our drinks arrived- 2 soft drinks. When they arrived i mentioned this to the server, no apology was forthcoming. The service throughout unfortunately was really poor. We were not offered any water for our dog which is usually a given for a "dog friendly" establishment. When our food order arrived- my food was missing the eggs, however having waited so long and due to the lack of service skills previosly shown, I never mentioned it. I also just wanted to eat and get out of there. The food itself was fine. When i went to pay our bill, the cashier just stood talking to the lady behind me in the queue, literally talking over my head. It was a truly terrible experience which is a shame as we have been before and often visit Irvine. We will just need to find elsewhere for food.

Takeaway coffee, breakfast rolls and cakes were amazing! Well worth the 36 mile trip! Staff were also very friendly and atmosphere was nice, albeit we took the food and drinks to go. Will definitely return to try some more food/cakes!

Small post funeral buffet here. Very nice place, not too big and ideal for our needs. Can't fault any of the staff or service on the day or when booking prior to that. Only very tiny point I could make is that there was too much mayo on the sandwiches....but probably a matter of personal taste as much as anything. Certainly thinking of going back sometime for a proper meal.
