By the time you’ve descended from Kidsty Pike, negotiated the Hawesater shoreline and then walked onto Shap you’ll be pretty well exhausted so it’s rather disconcerting to find you have to trek the length of the village to arrive at the Greyhound Inn BUT the good news is it’s all worthwhile! Four of us walked the C2C. The section from Patterdale to Shap is the toughest stage. We found the section from the start in Patterdale to the Greyhound (at 17 miles) to be a greater distance than mentioned in the guidebooks but it does mean (because you can walk directly up to the railway and motorway crossing points from the back of the pub) that you reduce the distance of the following day’s walk by something like a mile. We had a very warm welcome from the manager Tom and, more importantly, the bar staff. Excellent dinner and very lovely restaurant waitress. Breakfast was similarly very good. Service was prompt and friendly at all times and we felt that the team couldn’t have done anything to make our stay more enjoyable. The bedroom (room 2) was spacious and pleasant with a large, comfortable bed and had a decent bathroom with plenty of good quality towels. All accommodation in Shap is on the A6 which is a busy road (and the Greyhound is no exception) but thankfully you’ll be so tired that you maty not notice it!

We stayed here for one night whilst doing the Coast to Coast walk. We had left our car in the car part for 5 days as we were going to a wedding in the morning. Upon arrival after spending a few hours at Carlisle Hospital as my Wife had broken her wrist, the friendly young lady who checked us in kindly changed our froom to the larger one, so she could move around more easily. We ate there with our friends and enjoyed the F&Cs and Scampi, which I am sure is as good as the famous chippy down the road. The room, needless to say was very comfortable and spacious whilst the main pub area is simple but tasteful. The breakfast in the morning was also very good.

We stopped off here by chance on a long drive from London to the North of Scotland. We had a beautiful meal. The staff were very friendly and welcoming as were the locals that we spoke to.

Spent a couple of nights at this excellent hotel. Staff were so friendly and engaging it made it a home from home. Food was excellent, the light bites were spot on, and breakfast bacon butties were to die for - best tasted. Room was clean spacious well fitted out and power shower great after a day in the hills. Steph and her team made the stay special - thank you.

10/10 - couldn't fault anything. Excellent beer, staff, service & food. We were staying at the Haweswater Hotel and tried this place after being recommended by other walkers we met on the fells. Don't bother with HH - you will be disappointed, but you definitely won't be with The Greyhound.

Well located pub with rooms close to the M6, good stop off on the North/South long trips. Large bar area, with friendly welcome. Our (dog friendly) room was huge, no issues at all. However, the bathroom was very small (sort of size where it's difficult to dry off after a shower) - and the shower itself was a bit poor. We ate in the evening which was nice, good service from the staff - but left too early to check out the breakfast.

First time at the Greyhound we met with the family for lunch 6 adults and 1 child. The staff were friendly and welcoming the food was average with decent size portions. Three of us had the roast beef dinner the Beef was very nice but the veg Luke warm and the dinner a little dry I had to ask for more gravy. My husband had fish and chips which he enjoyed and the rest of the party enjoyed their meals.

Warm welcome. Not far from M6. Arrived mid evening but still able to have dinner. Lovely local beers to accompany it. We had a standard room which was warm with nice tea & coffee tray. Small bathroom with good shower. Lovely cooked to order breakfast. Would hope to visit again

The Greyhound is just a great solid place. Last night saw Shap to south Cumbria in turmoil with weather not seen for probably a decade. We’d been shooting locally and having used the pub on a number of occasions afterwards for a more than convivial drink we were faced with no obvious way south and home but we were welcomed and a bed offered if needed. Local advice sent us north before striking south and four hours later we eventually made it home. Thank you and see you soon.

This is situated a short distance from the M6. We stayed for one night to break a journey. The hotel was warm and cosy. Our room was spotlessly clean, simply furnished but had all the essentials. We had a meal in the pub restaurant and breakfast the next day. The food was good. The hotel seems to be popular with people walking in the area.

I booked the Greyhound for a team training and bonding day as it was central within my area, for my team to travel too. We started at 9am and finished at 4pm. The room was clean, with a good temperature and an ideal size for the 8 team members there. Tea, coffee, and water were supplied as part of the booking. We booked the team lunch in advance, and the food was beautiful. Portions large, well presented, and a good choice on offer. This venue is ideal for training, mini conferences, team meetings, and personal family gatherings. The team were extremely helpful and nothing was too difficult or a problem. We will definitely book further training sessions.

Very welcoming place. Nicki, the bright and cheerful lady in charge, made sure we had everything we needed. Her ability to deal with a particularly rude antipidean client with a privileged attitude was a joy to behold - a true hospitality professional. Dinner was good pub grub. Breakfast cooked to order. Our room was incredible with a lovely view to wake up to.

We stopped off on route back to our accommodation after a day exploring with our 23 month pooch. Our pooch was over tired at this point. Staff were excellent at dealing with our tired, over excitable pooch after he got over excited about other dog guests and spilt pint of softdrink. Food was nice. Would stop again

Last minute decision to get food, luckily had space for us, can't fault the staff the service was excellent and the food was really good my friend had fish and chips which was epic, I had prawn linguine which was beautiful only ever so slight criticism is it would have been even nicer if the linguine was served with garlic bread. But overall would definitely visit again

I’ll start by saying the good points to this country pub/hotel; The beds are lovely, very clean & really comfy - I have stayed at this hotel twice and both times I have slept well. On our first visit we paid for a premium room (£118 per night), the room was huge, it was covered in spider webs but not a deal breaker and bathroom was nice. On our second visit we just paid for a standard room (£109) and it had a premium tv with Netflix, etc on it yet our premium room just had satellite tv? Our bathroom was actually nicer in the standard than the premium, I believe it was premium because it had a bath but I actually found the standard room to be better. The staff are also nice, very pleasant & helpful. Breakfast is included in the price and half is self serve and the other is table service. On our first visit we had a Fellmans breakfast, which is two of everything and it was okay. However on our second visit they had crossed that option out and you could only get the one of everything breakfast. We wanted a bigger one so we opted for the vegetarian breakfast as you got two sausages, two eggs but no bacon but on our first visit the bacon was subpar so we weren’t bothered. However, when it arrived it had only one of everything. The lass who served us seemed to be alone and young, we work with the public so we understand that even if we asked her it would be to no avail as it’s not her fault, she is given what she’s told to dish out. We just accepted this breakfast, but to be honest, just tell people they’ll only be getting one of everything instead of what’s actually on the menu. We also tried the food on the night time and it was the same standard as breakfast - edible & okay, it gave the same feel as a more expensive Wetherspoons. It also smells like dog in the bar a lot of the time, as it’s a dog friendly pub. We have a dog at home so don’t mind that much but worth noting if you don’t want to smell that while trying to eat. Obviously we liked it enough to stay twice (we came for work purposes). As country hotels go it was very clean & pleasant enough but I think it’s fair to say it wasn’t absolutely amazing.

I stayed here while doing the Coast to Coast Walk on the 25th May. If I could give 10 out of 10, I would. The place was lovely, the staff were great and the lady who ran it with her husband was amazing. She couldn't do enough for me. I promised her I would write a glowing report, so, here it is!!

We were in the area for a family event and needed a bed for the night. We had booked a double room for one night having been here before. The staff were extremely helpful and allowed us to leave our luggage in our room earlier than normal. We booked a table for dinner and were very pleased that we did as the food was excellent. We also enjoyed the informal breakfast. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable, the room was very clean and had everything we needed. We would happily stay there again.

On a typical Lake District evening what are you looking for in a pub? This certainly hit the spot … a roaring log burner, a warm welcome with a mix of locals and visitors, good beer and excellent food - tasty, good quality and hearty portions. Travelling alone you always end up talking to those around you and they were similarly enjoying the beer and the food. It’s certainly dog friendly too with water bowls and towels to dry them when you arrive … before they hog the log burner. I gather this has been newly taken on by a family and I wish them well. Certainly I hope it thrives so I can return whenever I am breaking my journey at Shap - which is v convenient just off the M6.
