Good value food, clean tables etc. Staff very friendly and helpful. Plenty of choice for food and drink steak nicely cooked

This is the second time we have visited this restaurant. The first time, about a year ago was fab. Really enjoyed food and drink with family. I'm afraid this time was terrible. We booked via website as I was expecting it to be busy. We arrived 2pm and the place was nearly empty. That should have been the clue. When we went to order there were no Sunday lunches left. They make it sound like a pre-packaged meal. How do you run out of Sunday lunch....on a Sunday, the only day it is served. Bizarre. Nevertheless we ordered several other items. When my grandson's bolognese pasta arrived, he wouldn't eat after tasting. I tried the dish and the pasta was totally undercooked. It was horrendous. My wife refused to eat the chicken sandwich and just ate chips. Granddaughter, who loves pizza left most of her pizza. It really wasn't well cooked. It felt like they were serving large quantities of cheap food, but it really wasn't cooked or served well. Such a shame but we won't be back. Maybe the chef could do with revisiting some of the basics.

Awful food I ordered the large mixed grill, and it was inedible. I had to go and find the manager as there was no checkback. How can you grill meat without getting bar marks on it,and then send it out stone cold. It was replaced, but it was no better apart from being microwaved. The previous customers' plate and coffee cup were still on our table when our meals arrived. And still no checkback! On the plus side, the bar team were fantastic 👏

Staff member Layla was just outstanding - although hungry horse pubs are not high-end but cheap and cheerful, this lady made it something so wonderful we wanted to go back again! she was the essence of hospitality, warmth,and delight. she took a real interest in us, was genuinely friendly and could not have been a lovelier host. 10 out of 10 to Layla!!

I was a lone female on a work trip and Shannon made sure I had a nice table where I felt comfortable. She served my drinks to the table and was so attentive and pleasant. Thank you Shannon. We should all strive to be more Shannon! 😊

For this type of pub it's one of the best service and prices good .. Emma & Sarah are efficient pleasant and always make you welcome.all the staff make sure this pub is ran efficiently not that common in this day and age ..it's also wheelchair friendly 👍

Went for a meal with my husband and son. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was plentiful, freshly cooked and really really nice. We will be returning lovely

Breakfasts were fantastic value and plentiful and great staff who were extremely accommodating, only criticism is that some of the seating in the booths needed repairing.

It a Hungry Horse next to a Premier Inn. It’s pretty cheap but no less cheerful. Staff were good, we had to book because of Covid restrictions. Tables well spaced out. There’s an offer on pretty much every night so two double burgers etc for £9 is not going to break the bank. Walking distance (ie 25 yards) from the Premier Inn so there’s no real reason to go anywhere else unless you’re looking for something more elaborate.

Stayed at adjacent Premier Inn, breakfast in the hotel. Staff helpful and friendly even first thing on a morning. Food excellent quality and plentiful. Highly recommended.

Today we visited the Gretna intending to go to the wacky warehouse to celebrate my little boys second birthday! We had a meal in the restaurant first and Emma and her colleagues couldn't of been more helpful! Absolutley amaIng customer service skills! Emma brought albie an activity pack and gave him an ice cream too! Thankyou for making his day that but more special!♥️

The food is always great for the price! All the staff are amazing especially Emma, always makes us feel welcome and nothings ever too much to ask for hence why we’re such regulars. The atmosphere is amazing! All cocktails were really nice, The presentation of the sex on the beach the layers(noice) Each time we visit it’s always a good experience.

Let me start by saying if you want somewhere decent to eat then don’t eat here. Had lunch dinner and breakfast here and had problems with all 3 meals. Lunch we got dirty fries with tikka sauce but the food was cold when served. No one wants coldchips with cold curry sauce. Next up at dinner they got the drinks wrong, didn’t bring the food out as requested and to top it off gave me the wrong order. When questioning the waitress was made out like I had ordered the wrong thing. I think we can all agree we know what we order when in a restaurant so the waitress clearly got it wrong. My brothers sizzling plate wasn’t sizzling so his food when served was all soggy. My mum and aunts wrap had no salad in it. I mean when you can’t even get a chicken wrap right you know you’ve got problems. The customer service skills of the staff there leave a lot to be desired to say the least. To top it off went in for breakfast (it was already paid for so I thought what’s the worse that can happen) and what I got served I wouldn’t even feed to my dog. Whilst I appreciate it is all you eat for breakfast the standard of food served was an absolute disgrace. In conclusion I can safely say I was thoroughly disappointed by the whole experience and wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone unless you want some awful food.

Friendly polite staff, in particular shannen our waitress she went above and beyond for our us. Really enjoyed our visit. And the food was spot on

Came for family meal, 8 of us, seated at 2 tables due to covid but not a problem as we were seated at tables next to each other. We were served quickly but with a nice break in between courses. Everyone enjoyed the food we had, my father in law was especially happy with his XL mixed grill, and the kids all loved theirs. I was too full for pud but the kids enjoyed theirs and what I pinched off the hubby and daughter was lovely we had a few different servers who were all really nice, polite and friendly. Kids play area also great for the kids, outside area was a nice distraction inbetween courses to stop the kids running riot! We will defo be back

We have visited the Gretna about 6 times since the opening on the 17th May.Emma and the staff always make us feel really welcome and go above and beyond to accommodate any need we have.Whilst lots of restaurants have put their prices up and delivered lower standard meals the Gretna has actually improved its selection of food at a higher standard than post lock down but at the same value for money. We have never had a bad meal yet. The food is unreal. It has such a lovely family environment too. Would definitely recommend. We’ve booked up again for this Sunday.

Amazing staff who just couldn't work any harder. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent for what we paid and we had a great time. Even with the Covid restrictions hats off to Emma and the team who were 1st class!!

We called in, hoping we could get a burger on way home. Lovely weather and had dog with us. We were told tables all booked but as we wanted to sit outside, if we could load app to order selves we were more than welcome. We were given very clear instructions what to do (they had information all ready on printed sheets). After 10 mins we placed order at our table outside, were pleasantly surprised that we got a 2 meal deal (£13 for 2 burger meals and 2 drinks - very reasonable). Then got the dog from car, by which time drinks were on the table. 5 minutes later the food arrived. Really great experience and pleasant staff, all wearing masks. We felt very safe, loads of room around table. We will call again.

Visited today with friends our ladies what lunch meeting. It was our first outing indoors so we were so looking forward to it and we were not disappointed.Lovely efficient friendly staff. Emma served our table at the beginning and did everything she could for us nothing was too much trouble.Even gave us strawberries for our Prosecco lovely touch!!Emma finished her shift and her colleagues looked after us very well on her departure.Emma is a definate credit to the company whom she could not praise enough herself. Lovely to see friendly staff it makes the experience all the better. Very relaxed atmosphere the food came quickly and was very hot and delicious.My friends had the golden years menu brilliant value for money three courses for under £10.00. Suits the smaller appetite even though you still get a good portion.Could not fault a single thing. Well done to all, we have booked to come back and see you on another one of our meet up in June we enjoyed it that much.Keep up the good work

We called in on the offchance the first day of reopening.Although they were very busy they did their best to accommodate us.The meal was extremely good,service very good,so much so we came back the day after.Again, marvellous service, and a superb meal.So nice to see smiling waitresses and bar staff.A most enjoyable experience.Would recommend this place to anyone.

we went out as a family group to the Gretna, a place we visited regularly before the pandemic. We booked and were greeted by Emma as we arrived. After being shown to out table Emma looked after us, our drinks and meals were brought to the table promptly. The meals were superb the service excellent. I would recommend his place to anyone

Having visited the gretna regularly for a number of years we were already confident that covid rules would be followed but they really have excelled in these torrent times particularly Taff and his team thank you guys keep up the good work. 5***** All ROUND.

On arrival me and my partner were shown to a six seater table even though there were some two seater tables that were socially spaced, went to use app for the basic £5.50 curry menu and hey presto cheapest offer was £7.50* asked bar person and they had to order it manually as website app not displaying offer, on arrival the korma that we ordered was terrible it was as watery as soup and very little taste , we asked about the drink offer with the meal, so I got a pint, ( spot on) my partner didn't want the house wine, so asked if she could upgrade to a single gin, which we were told it would be a little cheaper as we weren't having house wine, once paid for via chip and pin, bill was over £16.50, approx so a single gin has been charged at £5.50p as meal was £11, we ended up leaving most of the curry and won't be coming back for the Wednesday curry night, very poor

We were guests at neighbouring hotel and paid for breakfast included, we arrived and were greeted by welcoming waiting staff and the rules were explained clearly. We were given a full range of breakfast fayre to choose from, and tucked into continental breakfast followed by full English! Greedy I know. Staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. To top it all off Kids eat free, so we didn't waste money on our 10yr old who had yoghurt, strawberries and a couple of hash browns lol.

Shown to table, ordered at bar, waited a while for drinks to arrive, ordered combi starter for 2, everything deep fried, nothing healthy onthe menu.

The Gretna is local to us and has been a rollercoaster over the years some visits good and others bad! This was good. the food was good, not great but good. The kids always enjoy the Gretna as they can play outside after they have eaten. The service was good , and our waitress Judith took her time out to explain all the new rules.

Visited for my first meal out since lockdown a few weeks ago and have been again since. Both times the food has been lovely, the service has been great. The staff are doing a fab job of keeping it clean and the tables are appropriate distances apart. Have a table booked for another visit soon.

I came with two of my friends, we were greeted at the door, had the regulations explained to us clearly. We were seated quickly and without fuss. We ordered via the app and the food came very quickly. The lady who brought the food I think Georgia is her name was lovely and made every effort to make sure we had everything we needed (even when I was a pain and asked for more sauce) the food was edible but I was a bit underwhelmed by the lasagne but it was V dry. Apart from that we had a pleasant experience and would definitely return again soon. Well done to the staff, they are doing an excellent job welcoming people back in and providing a pleasant experience.

We stayed for the weekend at the Premier inn and had two evening meals and two breakfasts. Lovely food and staff efficient and friendly. Relaxed environment with the kids. Safety measures in place for COVID- well done Hungry Horse🙂.

Whilst in the area with my partner and some of my family we had booked into the Premier Inn hotel onsite once February 2019 and again the September of the same year. My parents use the place a few times a year and always recommend it. We used this pub for meals and drinks and to catch up with some of my dads family who live in Aycliffe & surrounding areas. Staff are friendly and pub is clean with a nice atmosphere. Food and drinks with some good deals on. Would recommend.

Visited here on a Tuesday as part of the ‘Eat out, help out’ scheme. We were greeted by a welcoming member of staff who kindly showed us to our table and talked us through the one way system they have in place. We ordered through their app which was quick and easy to understand. We didn’t have a long wait before our food arrived and it was delicious! It was lovely to see that the staff were setting high examples by following the one way system as many places this doesn’t happen.Would highly recommend as there was a safe and welcoming atmosphere.

Just had the worst mixed grill ever.Horrible only managed the egg and tomato. Chucked gamon sausages and steak worst ever. Chips about 3 weeks old. Peas not much better. Don’t order this at all cost. Not a fussy eater but this was worst ever. £11.99 not worth 99p. Other food might be ok don’t know. But having to slate my local establishment is poor. People are hungry yes. But people work hard to enjoy a meal out. Worst meal I’ve ever had. Horrible Sorry but the truth

I really enjoyed our meal here. The portions are very large and there is loads to pick from. I visit a Hungry Horse restaurant a few times a year and I kove the fact that there is always something unusual on the menu to try. I booked for 7 pm as I was not sure what time we would arrive but went in early to see if we could get drinks or change dinner time and we got our table Immediately. Friendly service and good at a very good price.

We went on the off chance of not being too busy,I was surprised that only two other tables were occupied,had gigantic cod, wasn't as gigantic as expected,but I suppose was acceptable,also had a mix it up with gammon and sticky char Sui sauce,the sauce is very nice,as in a Chinese takeaway,shame it's not available to purchase.

Great pub been coming here for years, bar staff always helpful , foods great value and very tasty, atmosphere is great people dinning and just enjoying good food with friends or family. The toilets always clean, bar staff always happy to help.

Some people nock these chain pubs, but there’s nothing wrong with this one. It’s great for families on a budget. Or as a couple we often pop in, instead of cooking. Don’t expect cordon blue, that’s not what it’s about. You’ll get a decent meal at a very decent price. They keep a very good pint of John Smiths and so is the larger I’m told. The staff at excellent, friendly and helpful. Call in sometime you won’t be disappointed and if you’re an AA member you can get a 20% voucher from The AA app every time you go.

Food good x time to wait very good x toilets very disappointing only three ladies toilets not flushing, doors not locking badly fitted, wet floor only one dryer working. Paid £8 for my grand daughters to play in Softplay area x dirty too crowded unsupervised children, plenty of adults sitting around xx children running amok x the area is very limited for the amount of children x won’t be going back. Another family sitting with us while eating said the same. I brought my grand daughters out of play are after ten minutes. £8 waste !

Busy local pub with built in kids play area inside and out. Huge menu to suit all great value. Easy parking and even a premier Inn if needing to stay. Huge range of drinks dessert and more very family orientated.

We have to leave this review for Emma because quite simply put, we love her! We come in every wine Wednesday and Sunday for a girly catch up and she’s always so polite, happy and class that we Always fill her in on our gossip! And she always knows we want a bottle not a glass. Place wouldn’t be the same without you!!! Thanks Ems!!

It is a great place you get a soft play and a restaurant so you can relax while your kid has fun playing I recommend going

Very good service from the staff who were all very nice and accommodating. More choices would have been nice such as pancakes and waffles. Ordered egg on toast but egg wasn't cooked properly and toast was burnt.

Excellent. Wonderful. Very good! We had a lovely evening. It was perfect for us we had traveled five and a hal hours to get here we wanted to eat relax an go.

A very warm welcome on arrival by the bar staff who was on her own to start. She couldnt have been more helpful and we enjoyed some drinks alongside food. The offer of Thursdays special with a free starter or dessert was taken. The starters were large enough to be a small meal and the main (halloumi ciabatta sandwich) was huge and after I couldn't finish it, the remainder was boxed up for me to take home.

My overall experience at this restaurant was fabulous! My family had a very welcome and satisfying time.

We ordered a sharing platter for 5 adults and 1 child. The chips could have been of a better quality and of a larger quantity. Play area could be improved to match the increased price.

Myself and my family had Christmas lunch at the Gretna on Christmas Day, l would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all Staff we had a lovely meal and could not fault the food and service we receive. We will definitely book again this year

Food was good value for money not as fresh as we would have liked but the Staff were very friendly. we did feel like we were being rushed.

The menu is typical chain pub grub and the portions are large. Offers include free children’s meals, free puds and cheap bottles of wine depending on which day you go on. We often just have a drink but recently tried the smaller portion meals on offer. I tried a chick pea and squash curry while my husband had fish and chips. The curry was tasty although the popadom was soft, but my husband’s chips were superb. Good value, anime atmosphere and friendly staff.

We enjoyed our meal and chose this venue - which entailed a 40 minute drive from home - because we have bee here before and know that we can get a good choice of tasty food at a reasonable price.

As a family, we visit the Gretna Hotel regularly and have found it to be excellent value for money. We highly recommend their chips as being the best we we have tasted locally. The service is always pleasant.

It’s a wonderful place to go and eat, drink, to take children or to just socialise in general, the staff are fantastic serving you promptly and professionally and they are all so friendly whilst doing so, would highly recommend to anyone. The food is brilliant, such a wide range of choice and the prices are all well worth what you get, the food also comes to the table at a very reasonable time.

I bought an escort for the night off lamp lovers after dark and agreed the best place to meet up so my wife doesn’t find out is a little town called newton Aycliffe and decided to stop at the premier inn on recommendation off one of the Gretna green managers.

Garbage,like most hungry horses. Ordered fish and chips,arrived in about 3mins over cooked fish 12 chips and teaspoon full of dry mushy peas,they didn’t have the full size fish available so I opted for the small portion still not worth the money,never again

The gretna has a lovely atmosphere, with good service and lush food. A nice family restaurant for all.

We were very pleased with the wide choice of cuisine available. The staff were efficient, fast and very helpful. Very pleased to see low carb options available as well as vegetarian and vegan. Staff were happy to swap chips for salad or provide additional sauce or salad dressing. Delighted that we did not have to listen to music in the background. This is a family friendly pub/restaurant that was not noisy or chaotic. An altogether relaxing, dining experience.

Food was cold but service was really good in the wacky warehouse. Play area was nice and clean for my 3 year old to play in.

We visit the Gretna on a regular basis and are never disappointed. As always the food was delicious and plenty of it and the staff were efficient and friendly. It is a great little pub to have as our local.

had the burger/sizzler combo, my wife got the same and for a pub chain meal this one was one of the best we have had, even though the pub was busy we did not have too long to wait, ok I had a voucher for money off (didn't tell the wife this) but still great value for the portion size.

We visited on a Sunday and took advantage of the £16 Family Deal. Couldn’t fault it for quality and value. I would definitely recommend and will return in the future.
