Great Wall Chinese Restaurant in Wiltshire

**Great Wall Restaurant, Salisbury** Our usual Chinese takeaway was closed due to a fire, so after hearing great things about The Great Wall in Salisbury from friends, we decided to give it a try. Although we pre-ordered our food, we still had to wait 20 minutes for it to be ready. When we got home, the food was reasonably hot. At first glance, it looked appealing and smelled decent. However, as we started serving it, we noticed how greasy everything was. We initially brushed this off, thinking that Chinese food can sometimes be a bit greasy. Unfortunately, after just a few bites of my Chicken Chow Mein, I had to stop eating because it was overwhelmingly greasy and ended up throwing it away. My partner had the Singapore special fried rice with curry sauce, and he also had to stop eating and discard his meal. Both of us are now feeling queasy from the excess fat and saltiness in our dishes. It’s a shame because the reviews suggest that this is a good restaurant and it was quite busy. We also had positive recommendations from friends. However, I suppose it depends on what you’re accustomed to. Our regular Chinese food is never this greasy, and we've never ended up throwing it away. Unless you're used to this level of greasiness, I would recommend finding another place to eat.

A fabulous place. Food is excellent and the service is friendly and very welcoming. There is so much choice of food. I am veggie and never seen as many choices for veggie as there was on the menu. Very reasonably priced aswell. Authentic surroundings . Definitely recommend

Went on a Thursday night as we have been before and the food had been excellent. It didn't disappoint. The scallops were cooked to perfection and my mum really enjoyed the lemon chicken. Lots of great options on the menu, so will need to go back to sample the other dishes! The portions of rice and noodles were very generous (you may need to share unless you're really hungry!) and the drink options good. The service was above and beyond expectations and the staff were really friendly. They don't add a service charge to the bill, which annoys me about some places, so they obviously get the small details right. Will visit again at the earliest opportunity and would highly recommend. Maybe my local takeaway is a great chinese, going by this place it is, fairly high prices for mediocre food. Chow mein is a standard dish, but felt it needed more flavour, noodles under cooked. The wonton soup was like a beef stock cube, I can make better myself. Cant remember what the other starter was called, it's the first time I've ordered it and I've been put off, I'll never order that again, dry and minimal filling. I'll go elsewhere when I'm back that way.

Quirky restaurant with a great atmosphere. We visited on a Friday evening but hadn’t made a reservation as it was a last minute decision to go for a meal after visiting the excellent Everyman Cinema nearby. The staff were really welcoming and managed to fit our small group in, despite being very busy. Food was served promptly and was excellent. Very impressed and we will visit again. Booking recommended though!

We first came here, by chance, with our family October 23 (10 people incl. 1 toddler). The service, friendliness and general ambiance was second to none. Moving on to the food - we have been to Asia many times as well as other continents and their Singapore Noodles were without doubt the best we've ever tasted. All the other diners ate different selections from the menu and were above happy. Because of our earlier experience the first place we headed for when returning to the UK from our home in Portugal for a short visit was Salisbury AND the Great Wall Of China Restaurant. 10 out of 10. A group of 17 friends recently ate here. We all enjoyed our evening and the food. No complaints. The restaurant appeared clean and welcoming. I had salt and pepper chicken with noodles and I really enjoyed it. Other dishes were chicken and broccoli, schezuan mixed veg, crab claws, dumplings, sizzling beef, chicken curry that others had had, everyone said how tasty it all was and it was served fast and hot. We will all be returning

Really lovely people. It’s clearly a family run business, so there’s so much more care put into the food, the presentation and customer service. The food was very yummy; I recommend the king prawn har gow! Very fresh, hot and tasty. But there’s so much food to choose from; everyone will undoubtedly find something they like! I just wish there were more options in terms of the dessert. The decorations were stunning, and was complemented by a pleasant atmosphere. So much love has been put into this restaurant. We almost didn't eat here, because from the outside it doesn't look particularly appealing... but luckily we saw the reviews on TripAdvisor and gave it a go, because it was a really great experience! The inside of the restaurant, which is up some stairs and on the first floor of the building, is stylish, clean, atmospheric and has a nice ambience. The service was efficient and really friendly. And the food was excellent - possibly one of the best Chinese meals we've had in a while. I would definitely come here again, next time I'm in Salisbury.

We visited the restaurant on a Tuesday evening and had a wonderful meal. The staff were extremely lovely and friendly and the food was delicious. We ordered several things from the menu to share between two and couldn’t quite manage to eat it all. We were very happy when the staff offered to box up our leftovers to take with us. Overall a really tasty meal in a welcoming environment.

Best Chinese in Salisbury by far! Always a lovey meal in there and always have a decent takeaway! Munchie box for the win!

I was looking forward to a Chinese. It had all the usual dishes, but was nothing special. Not sure I would go back.

We went here with friends and were not disappointed! Great decor & Lazy Susan’s on the tables (always a bonus). The staff were very attentive. Wine was great - reasonably priced and the food was delicious with generous portion sizes! Highly recommend and think we shall be visiting here regularly now.

Absolutely loved the food, loved the atmosphere, tables and seating of great quality. Menu was extensive, you have the choice to order the more common dishes for the western palate or indeed a choice of more authentic Chinese food.. ourselves had a mix of the two menus and the dishes did not disappoint. Cannot stress enough that this is an opportunity to try authentic Chinese dishes and perhaps move away from the chicken ball and chips options youd normally go for. The staff are so welcoming and friendly, we were seated promptly and drinks order was in good time as was the order and serving of the food. We've eaten at other Chinese restaurants in the area and it by far outways in all areas.

We visited this restaurant based on the reviews below, seriously, DO NOT BOTHER. The decor: no words. The food: gloopy, very sweet, odd, yuk, not sure what else to say, except, don't put yourself through it. Waste of money.

The only proper Chinese in Salisbury. For a pleasant surprise be sure to order something you are not familiar with, from the menu that is partly written in Chinese.

Lovely warm and friendly welcome to a well spaced out restaurant area. Very authentic décor. I asked the waitress which dishes were suitable for vegetarians and she explained very patiently. However when asked what EXACTLY is vegetarian chicken or duck is made from, and how they differ, it all became very vague. I decided to order the tofu ginger and spring onion as was advised it was vegetarian. I have no idea what the brown sauce was ( a little afraid to ask) that it was swimming in. No mention, unless I missed it of a brown unidentified sauce. Certainly no hint of ginger and the tofu unappetising as it appeared to have been marinated in said sauce. Same for the mushroom noodle soup, no idea what the liquid was. The spring rolls were lovely as was the coconut ice cream. Perhaps a meat eater would enjoy more. cannot fault the service, excellent, but please let us know what the vegetarian chicken is actually made from.

We ordered at 6.30pm on Friday evening for a delivery at 8pm. When the order hadn’t arrived at 8.15, I called them and was told the delivery was on its way. When it hadn’t arrived at 8.45, I called again and was told that the driver had arrived back at the restaurant with our food. They offered to try the delivery again….I declined as by now our food had been driven around for an hour! We’d ordered a fair amount of food and this service is unacceptable! We definitely won’t be using them again!

This has finally put me off Chinese takeaways. I ordered a few bits and a bit of chicken smelt really bad and had some erroneous brown thing in it. Made me sick and was refused refund. Will never order Chinese food again.

Very good takeaway from here. Lots of Chinese options in Salisbury and you tend to stick to the same one if you know it’s good. Well my ‘local’ was closed on Tuesday so have this place a go on recommendation from a friend. Pleasantly surprised! Food was so fresh. What was notable was the quality of the meat. The duck breast was melt in the mouth chunks rather than cheap cuts. The chicken balls were also lightly battered and fluffy rather than crispy and over cooked as they so often can be. Will be returning soon.

We went for the set menu. Not cheap but very good and plenty of it. Many family groups there. It seems a great place for children. We nearly managed all the food but were defeated at the end. Just a great meal altogether.

we ate from the traditional chinese menu. what a wonderful variety of tastes and flavours. it was so nice to try something different and it more than exceeded our expectations. can't wait for my next visit!

There was a large variety of different dishes available, both from Chinese cuisine and "Western" Chinese cuisine (imagine your typical chinese takeaway dishes, chow mien etc) and the staff were delightful. The food tasted great and we'll be sure to visit again!
