Gowlett in Southwark

Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The staff was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great dining experience.

Superb neighbourhood pub. A must.

My daughter, with her knack for unearthing hidden gems, led us to The Gowlett Arms – a cozy British pub where the locals looked at me, the stiff German, with a mixture of curiosity and polite amusement. Amidst the warm atmosphere, I found myself staring at a billiard table dotted with mushroom-shaped pegs, a sight that defied all my logical understanding. Too shy to ask, I held back, but my daughter, braver and clearly more adaptable, didn’t hesitate. She struck up a conversation with two chaps who, sensing my bewilderment, graciously explained the rules of Bar Billiards. It’s a game, they informed us, that rewards cunning over precision, punishing anyone bold enough to topple a mushroom. I didn’t play – likely for the best – but left with a newfound respect for British games that humble even the most orderly minds and a quiet admiration for my daughter, who embraced the whimsy where I held on to my reserve.

This is my favorite place to meet friends in the neighborhood. When it’s warm out, the tables out front or in the back garden are a great place to enjoy the sun (and even in the back the walls protect from a slight breeze). Great space inside too, and I’ve never found it too crowded to get a table even on a weekend evening. Drinks are well priced and staff very friendly and welcoming. I take my 4 year old here occasionally as well and it’s definitely kid friendly.

Such a great pub in every way. However the pizza used to be a lot better, not sure if they have new kitchen staff or something like that but it’s definitely not as good which is a big shame!

The Gowlett is my favourite pub; it's a great local with a friendly ambiance, good drinks selection and the best pizzas around to boot. It is also dog friendly which means we can bring the whole family.

Until this evening, for MANY years this has been - without doubt- my favourite Peckham pub. NEVER ever again. As a publican with over 30 years of customer service, to be harangued, ganged-up on (I jest not) by 3 appallingly dressed miserable servers when I had the nerve/audacity to question their attitude (and, rather than offer any form of apology/contrition allege that I have one!) is shameful. Get some manners, get some management, dress as if you care about your appearance - and you can stick the whole, untouched pizza that I walked out on (that you refused to refund) wherever you want. You’re absolutely disgraceful

When I told a mate who lived near Peckham that I was planning a small sojourn around Peckham Rye and enquired to what pubs I should look up he immediately came up with this one and when sitting inside I could see why. It doesn’t open until 4.00PM on weekdays and when I rucked up at 4.30PM there was already a healthy number of locals in, and the conversation was flowing. This is clearly a very solid back street community pub which wraps around you like a well-worn pair of slippers. Comfortable padded seating, especially in the area around the bar billiards table, and the walls are adorned with pictures and paintings for sale by local artists, which add to the community feel of this one. Harvey’s Sussex Best and TT Landlord are permanent beers in here and these were joined by Tring Brewery Side Pocket for a Toad and Sharp’s Seafury so a solid real ale line up, if not spectacular, and I had a very good Harvey’s Best to finish the days crawl around Peckham Rye. I cannot comment on the Pizza's but for a back street pub for a beer , this is a very good option.

This pubs bloody lovely, my mate does the pizzas they're proper yummy and a bit different. I also am addicted to fernet its a great little spirit.

Fabulous boozer. Beer is well looked after and the homemade wood-fired pizzas hit the hungry spot. The staff are simply brilliant. 5*

Probably the best value pub in London. Feel like I got a pint for free in my round! Such a great, warm, friendly, low key atmos. Delicious thin crust pizzas ... would get the Gowletinni daily if I could. Thank you all, very dog + baby friendly with beautiful beats. Was there on a Sunday when the DJ was serving chilled jazz, thank you and can't wait to come back!

I love this pub. Great pizza. Great beer. Good music. But never so loud that you can't have a conversation. But my favourite aspect of The Gowlett is how relaxed and "honest" it feels. In a world where most pubs feel like motorway service stations, The Gowlett is a breath of fresh air. It's not pretending to be anything that it's not. I was surprised to see some negative reviews. The Gowlett probably isn't for everyone. A large part of its charm (for me) is that it's a bit rough round the edges. But, for me, The Gowlett is probably my favourite pub in London.

The place is nice, we went to celebrate a friend's birthday and the first three employees who served us were very attentive and pleasant (two blonde girls and a guy with long hair and mustache). After a while, a girl with short brown hair who was sitting at the counter (I thought she was a customer), went inside the counter and started working. She was very rude with all the guests, in the service, when we were singing happy birthday, she asked us to stop, and when we left, we were waiting for the uber quietly and she came to us at the exact moment we left and said “Could you wait for the other one street side? Because there's no one else out front but you, I'd like you to go there", and I was like "WHAT?", but our uber arrived right away (thank God). And on top of that I'm a gluten allergic person and they didn't have any gluten free food, they didn't even have chips.

I absolutely adore this pub. Extremely breathtaking. Profoundly life changing. My life is so much better having found this gem. Can’t go wrong

Tasty Pizza and good beers. Full of young'uns desperate to live the 'Real London' experience in a declawed and slowly day by day watered down area that used to be very vibrant. Guinness fine.

Another community owned pub. Seems to be a thing around here. Good service, decent pint of Guinness. A couple of bags of Tayto's and time to move on on the traditional St Patrick's pub crawl.

Take a saunter down this residential road and find great Guinness, perfect pizza and a fun-loving crowd. Yes, it's a bit overly alliterative but hey, it's a nice review.

Came last night and enjoyed it; had an American hot pizza and drinks with friends. Pub was vibey and played really good funky music.

Nice boozer, with a pool table. Not sure why they have to do a 3 part pour for Guinness though. I don't think the Guinness brew master in Dublin would approve.

Over the years, most people came to the Gowlett for their pizzas which were superb. I hadn't been in around 7 years and was pleasantly surprised to find that they still served pizzas. I ordered the American hot. It wasn't quite as good as it used to be and they are now making the pizzas smaller. They serve draft beer, cask ale and wine. Kid friendly and they have a selection of board games to play.

Lovely pub but DJ playing means it's close to impossible to converse in a group.

Nice pub, good atmosphere and with tasty pizzas :) There was four of us with baby and toddler and we had a fun time. Also recently refurbed - there is a little outside back beer garden, and seating outside front, good toilets and room for decks & speakers

Real shame. Drinks excellent, food when it arrived was great. But over an hour for a pizza when the pub is half full is ridiculous and if you dare to mention that you didn't get the food that you ordered the (I assume) manger comes out and tries to patronise you. Calling someone "Mozzarella Girl" because they asked for extra Mozzarella is just childish

Always friendly and accommodating staff and locals. Their pizzas are some of the best in London.

I think they get reviews from friend and family. Fake news of the area. They lied about food. Lied about service. Rude response after comforting and after waiting for 45 minutes for food and no response. Carpets and outside smell like smoke, not great for kids. I cannot believe this place has even 1 star. So many great pubs around and this stand out as being the worst without a hint of exaggeration.

The worst place in the neighbourhood. Came with poorly child. Ordered pizza just before 6pm. Not only they lied it’s been half an hour which it’s been 45minutes waiting with sick child. They also passed by serving other people. When asked how come a random girl gives me a lecture. Horrible service. Rude people. Smells like smoke and rotten carpet. I never leave bad reviews. I’m just shaking after they told me off when I was waiting for door to feed a sick child. Outrageous!!!!!

Excellent pub, not too crowded even on a Saturday evening afternoon probably because it's slightly out of the way and all the better for it, tasty beers, good food.

Went here with a friend who knows it well, he says it is his favourite pub, great manager, great staff. Service was good, prices are decent. Atmosphere is always buzzing, but not too loud, so you can hold a conversation

A gem of a find, and im glad I did, with some of the finest beers around on offer, I went for the park brewery locally brewed cask ale, and wasnt disappointed

Been a few times and the gowlett arms is becoming synonymous with pizza night! They are wonderful - crisp, light (well yknow... for a pizza). A decent pub otherwise - better when it's a bit cooler outside (was quite warm indoors in the midst of a heatwave), can get pretty rammed and noisy Friday/weekends.

Came to the Gowlett after hearing so many good things about their pizzas and was unfortunately disappointed. The base was so thin and crispy it literally fell to pieces on the plate like a poppadom & there was barely any cheese at all. Won’t be returning in a hurry.

Very delicious pizza, and house white wine was very fresh tasty, the atmosphere was nice and quite when we first arrived around 7pm then got very load by 10 when we had to shout to eachother to be heard. Maybe something to be expected on a Friday night when the DJ is playing quite loud.

Now re-opened after a period of closure, and a slight furniture refurbishment, the layout, menu, beers, and atmosphere are mostly unchanged -- they clearly know that the old formula worked well, and have wisely decided not to make any major changes. Good beer, good pizza, helpful staff, good music playing (not too loud, which makes a nice change!)

The Gowlett has just had a face lift with new carpets, upholstery and a paint job. Thankfully the great staff and pizzas remain wonderfully the same. Always a welcoming atmosphere, the Gowlett is a lovely local pub to meet and socialise in. I would heartily recommend their Spanish Archer pizza and Timothy Taylor's Landlord bitter.
