Gordos in Guildford

Found this absolute gem and wow, the food was unreal, cooked right in front of you and loads of options to chose from every dish we had was absolutely fantastic!

My table ordered the chicken and fish tacos and the 12-hour slow cooked pork chimichangas, with Mexico Nachos to start. The food arrived soon after we ordered and all servers were friendly, considerate, and charming even when I accidentally broke a glass!

Best empanadas in town! Normally I never order food they just recommend and prepare amazing dishes! Cochinita pibil with nachos! Excelente combinacion!

Chimichangas and taco board were fabulous. Nice to get dos Equis and Victoria beers too (not seen them many places outside of Mexico!). Staff great, service great. Will definitely return!

Awesome experience at Gordos. From the start, thanks to the recommendations of our great waitress (I wish I asked her for her name, apologies), to the music (Luis Miguel ❤️) the ambiance, that beautiful picture on the wall, and obviously, the most awesome food. The beef in the chimichanga is so tender, the Nachos with chorizo were incredible, las quesadillas fueron mis preferidas! all of the flavours mix together beautifully. ¡Muchas gracias!

We've dined in 5 times now, and it is consistently delicious. The staff are very friendly. The restaurant is always clean, and the open kitchen allows you to witness just how carefully everything is prepared. It was tough to find authentic Mexican food and freshly made margaritas until we found Gordos. Try the chicken al pastor as a part of the taco sharing board along with a classic margarita, you won't regret it!

Food is delicious with great portion sizes not a massive menu but that's always a plus for me everything was done really well will definitely go back

A wonderful mega place to enjoy Mexican food 100% recommended

Now I am eating an Al Pastor on North St, Guildford, visited to see if Jay Rayner is right. Conclusion - Jay gets it. Delicious roast pork and subtle onion/range of vegetables on great mini-tacos are just dressed right to summon a hot Mexican evening. Salt/sweet/fruity - it's 3° degrees outside but forgotten in here. Not least because of the great jazz. If you don't want to go as far as Mexico then 3rd Street in Santa Monica is a good alternative - but how much nearer and more convenient is this Guildford main spine of North Street? Just go!

Popped in on New Years Eve as my son loves Mexican. This is genuinely the most delicious Mexican I have ever tasted, beautifully presented, really friendly helpful staff. The price for 4 of us, including 2 ravenous teenage boys was really reasonable. I am genuinely so happy we tried here, we will be back!

The food was delicious and filled with flavour, but portion sizes (tacos, for example) were quite small. I had the Black Bean Enchilada, which was a good portion. Staff were attentive and friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed our Spicy Margaritas. Would definitely return!

I love this place. The prawn and chili tacos are amazing. I order them every time we visit along with the homemade lemonade. Have a sip of the lemonade with a mouthful of prawn. Yum.

This was my fifth visit to Gordo's (I think). I hesitated on going again, but decided to give it one more chance. Gordo's is one of only a few truly independent restaurants in Guildford, and the only proper sit-down Mexican restaurant in the town. It's small and buzzy, cheerfully decorated, with good music at a sociable volume, and has attracted some good press in the past. However, on all of my previous visits, I've been unimpressed. Every time, I have found the service slow and inattentive, and the food sub-par. Due to changes in the menu, this visit was better, but I still wasn't blown away. If you're expecting an authentic Mexican restaurant, or one of the style you'd find in the US, you'll be disappointed: the food would be better described as 'Mexican inspired'. One of the first things you'll notice about the food at Gordo's is that everything seems very tightly portion-controlled: every plate the same, every dollop of meat or guacamole precisely measured as though someone has used a literal ice cream scoop to portion it out. There are no free chips and dips, and all the plates are very small, even the mains. Having visited previously and left hungry, we opted for three starters to share between three of us. We chose the nachos with chorizo (rather dry, and very much a starter-sized portion, £14), chicken empanadas (three 3-inch pastries, £9), and garlic and chilli prawns (6 small butterflied prawns in an admittedly tasty and tangy sauce, £10) Since my last visit, they've introduced a taco sharing board, which is great, because their standard taco portions are absurd. Their tortillas are roughly the size of a beer mat, way smaller than you get at most Mexican restaurants, and the portion of three tacos is not enough for a main course unless you have the appetite of a goldfinch. The taco boards (which 'serve two' at £24.50) would make a solid meal for one (add a starter if you're hungry). We shared two boards between three of us, in addition to the three starters, and finally, our appetites were satisfied by Gordo's. If you're in the mood for tacos, I'd recommend the sharing board over the individual plates: they include separate servings of salsa, guacamole, salad and beans, which the individual plates do not - although they do come in precisely measured teacup-sized portions. Ultimately this is where Gordo's falls down in comparison to other Mexican restaurants: the portions and the lack of sides. Dishes are well-garnished (with micro-greens) but rice has to be ordered as a £5 side dish. Beans, guacamole, salad etc all come in tiny spoonfuls, if you get them at all. The flavours are good and punchy, the food is well-cooked, but the portions are so stingy that they'd be better off rebranding themselves as Mexican Tapas. (But if they did, people would balk at the prices.) Including the automatic 12.5% service charge, our bill came to nearly £60 a head for what only JUST amounted to a filling meal, with two drinks each. On this visit, service was a little slow and inattentive, but on previous visits it's been terrible. The restaurant was relatively empty on this visit, with only three other tables occupied, but we still had to hail staff for a second drink, and for the bill, despite there being 6 members of staff on the floor/behind the counter. I would love to love Gordo's. Having visited the US and Mexico many times, Mexican food has become one of my favourite fast and cheap go-tos for a hearty meal. If you've ever visited California (one of the US's most expensive states!), you'll know it's possible to get a meal the size of your literal torso at an independent family-run Mexican restaurant there, with a couple of Margaritas the size of your head, take away half your meal because you couldn't possibly eat everything, and still have change from £25. But you don't have to go transatlantic for a decent and filling Mexican meal: even Wahaca blows Gordo's out of the water with generous portion sizes and authentic flavours, for less. Honestly, if you frame Gordo's as a fancy Mexican Tapas restaurant, it's decent. Great flavours, good atmosphere, something different for Guildford. We did enjoy our meal - expecting the prices and the tiny portions and going in with low expectations after previous visits. But cheap, it ain't. Authentic, it ain't. If you've been to Mexico or are used to US-style Mexican restaurants you'll probably leave hungry (or broke). But it's better than no Mexican restaurant at all. I just wish they'd re-think the game plan. They could easily raise the prices on the tacos/quesadillas but serve them with a hearty selection of sides - rice, guacamole, salad, a dollop of beans - and people would leave happy and satisfied. Quicker, more attentive service, and it could easily become the go-to place for a solid meal in a lively cantina-style atmosphere with that open kitchen. I'd love to love Gordo's. I'd be there every weekend if I could get a filling Mexican meal and a Margarita at a reasonable price before a night out. But I can't at the moment, and that's a shame.

Rather bright and noisy small restaurant on North Street. A rare non-chain establishment which is good. I thought it might be busy but there were more staff than customers. Despite that the food wasn't fast and didn't seem especially hot. We had the taco plate which had several small dishes of pork, chicken and beans with suitable accompaniments. It was quite tasty and OK value, just as long as you weren't hungry. Ironic really given that Gordo means Fatty! The server was trying to clear the table before we had really finished. On that basis I would have said I was glad to have visited but wouldn't rush to return. However when the bill arrived there was a service charge, despite there being no mention of it on the menu. I am happy to pay extra for service but if they are not leaving it to my discretion they need to observe the legal niceties and declare it. Trading Standards will be notified. Offering to remove it is not good enough. The server didn't even know what the percentage was and the bill didn't declare it. I have done the maths and it was 12.5%. If it had been left to me I would have paid nearly as much and would have left happy. I wouldn't have been planning to return but I wouldn't have been recommending that you should avoid this place

Second visit to Gordo's and the food is still tasty though expensive for what you get. This time around I thought they'd listened as they now offer sharing platters or dishes that serve two people. What arrives is honestly what you'd expect one person to eat. Also a shame that cocktails can't be ordered as a jug so adds significantly to the cost.

Easy to book online Food a bit bland - had the sharing taco platter - reasonable amount of food but not very tasty. Had to ask for water four times before it came. Ordered two small glasses of wine, however one came as half a glass the other a full glass yet got charged the same! Not sure if I won on that one or not. Service added to your bill. Overall okay, may have been our food choice as my son's both enjoyed theirs. Wouldn't return. It may be for the younger crowd rather than us oldies? 🤣

Great Mexican food in a convenient format and centrally located. The food choices are pretty widespread and it is very vegetarian/ vegan friendly. The only downside might be that some of the seating is right next to the cooking area so it could be loud or unpleasant for some. The restaurant is also quite small. Overall would highly recommend trying this out if you are in the area.

We went to dinner at Gordos tonight with my 12 year old son. He loved it (as did we) and this is his review! We went to Gordos for dinner it was very authentic and had a fantastic atmosphere. The menu had lots of creative , mouth-watering ideas as well as traditional dishes. The service was very good with friendly efficient staff. But the best bit was the food. I had the terrific chimichanga and to finish I had the churros which were amazing! Thank you Gordos 5/5

First time experiencing this awesome place. Loved watching everything being prepared; especially the cocktails! Amazing cocktails by the way! Food was SO tasty; WOW on the garlic and chilli prawns! 😀. Chef and Staff lovely friendly professional and attentive. Finishing off with tequila was perfect. A must go.

Really tasty authentic Mexican food

We went to Gordos for the first time for my wife’s birthday - she loves Mexican cuisine. To say we were impressed is an understatement. We were blown away by the flavours and quality of every dish and the team were very friendly and professional. We will certainly be returning back!

Lovely food and really nice people. Beer a bit expensive (£5.50 for small bottle), made worse by inappropriate 12.5% service charge. It's a bar/cafe, not a posh restaurant.

Wow… what a find!! Love, love, love this place… food was amazing, portions LARGE and as authentic as you’ll get in the UK. Empanadas were the best we’ve had anywhere (and we’ve had a LOT!). Have driven past many times and now very annoyed at myself that I didn’t try it out sooner… it’s bright, fresh, feels like you’re in Mexico… helped by the fact that Gordo sings to himself (loudly! ) while he’s cooking. Really can’t fault it at all… a big FAT 5 stars from me!

Working in the hospitality industry for years, I can happily say this has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I left not even 10 minutes ago and felt the need to come home and make this post. The food was absolutely amazing, flavours were divine, drinks were amazing. As I ate I watched the owner cooking his heart out and operating with such passion that made me love this place even more. Very hardworking staff and respectable people, 6 out of 5 stars, worth a try any day of the week.

On the positive side I thought the food was lovely - perhaps not authentically Mexican but closer than the tex-mex served elsewhere. The restaurant has an interesting layout - we had booked ahead and had been allocated a table closely opposite a very wide female toilet door - if I were to return I would ask for a table in the main restaurant near the kitchen/service area and away from the toilets. The service was disappointing - a lot of staff but it was as though we were invisible - the first order of starters was forgotten and we were just left there for 10 minutes without anyone coming to check what we would like to order. Asking a passing waiter if we could have some more water for the table he looked at us and completely ignored us. As service charge of 12.5% was added to the bill I am guessing the staff don't feel they need to put in any effort as at the end of the day they still got £13 from our table for poor service. Yes I would visit Gordos again as I like the food - but I am disappointed I cannot give this restaurant a 5 star review.

This was our first visit to Gordos on recommendation, and it was excellent. Not having experienced Mexican food before, we really enjoyed the dishes. Everything was freshly cooked with an excellent selection available. Highly recommended 👌

Visit to Gordos yesterday and very disappointed. I understand the restaurant is small but it has a very limited menu than other Mexican restaurants, no rice, no refried beans etc. Nachos were good but sadly mains were not. Ordered our food and 1 guest ordered a chilli and prawn chimichanga but what we received was a soggy sloppy mess and not a prawn in sight. Had to pay extra for more sour cream as the tiny spot given on each plate was not enough, not even fresh, this is ridiculous. So we informed staff about the meal, just said sorry do you want something else, not really waited ages for this. No offer of the same replacement as obviously all the same (pre-made) and then walked away! Not what I expected so told them to take off the bill as they didn't mention it! Clearly not bothered and no one came back to see us, so asked for the bill and left. Will not be returning and would not recommend. No customer service and should be a take away.

Very disappointed 😞 had prawn chimchangas , not one prawn in either of them, dough was wet and raw, and no apology when complained. Sadly will not be coming back ,very bad experience

Great, authentic food and atmosphere. Best Mexican food I’ve had in the UK and attentive service. Wheelchair friendly too despite the small footprint. Definitely book to avoid being disappointed!

Very bad and poor service. Staffs are not friendly at all. One young guy waiter put our drinks on the side of the table just like that. Food was nice, ambience was nice but the service was bad. And the restaurant was not even busy so, there is no excuse of treating us badly. Only 1 guy was nice and attentive and took care of our table but he was not there when we get there at 1st, he came after we already started with our starter, Idk if he was the owner or manager or some head of that restaurant because as soon he entered all the staff started getting little more attentive and trying to be friendly. But whatsoever I think this restaurant needs to train their staff more well. I was so excited to finally get some authentic Mexican food in town and wanted my friend to try it aswell. Me and my friend got really disappointed seeing the treatment and hospitality. We were tired and exhausted after the whole day shopping and wanted to have some good food with good friendly energy but instead we have to return home in full disappointment. And thank you so much for that. P.S: I am not the person who likes to give bad reviews and post it but it was really that bad that I have to leave the review. And sorry about that.

My friend and I have been excited to try Gordos for months. Having spent time in Mexico she was keen to see how this restaurant compared. The service staff were slow- it was Friday night and trying to order food or drinks was painful. They ignored us so much that we (and other diners on nearby tables) struggled for any kind of interaction. I would understand if they looked busy and were rushing around, but it felt like we were being served by students half asleep with their heads in the clouds. It was painful how slow they were. I’d love to say the food made up for the abysmal service. However the food was very soggy, tasted weird, and I actually had concerns over eating it, so left half of my food. I’ve eaten great Mexican before, and my friend agreed that the textures and flavors were not a good representation of the Mexican food she ate out there. The service charge is automatically added to the bill, so despite having such a dreadful customer experience we still tipped 12.5%. The meal was one of the most expensive I’ve had in a while, the service was terrible, and the food was gross.

The food is truly excellent. The portions aren't generous in size like you'd typically get in Mexico or in the US, but the quality is outstanding. The cocktails are decent, and there are some nice dessert options. Unfortunately, I was warned the service isn't great, and both times I've been there have been major issues and confusion - such as incorrect or missing items. And ordered drinks that just never came. But for high-quality Mexican food, it really is the best option this side of Surrey by a mile.

We visited Gordo's last night and the food was delicious and the restaurant had a lovely atmosphere. I don't want to leave a bad review because the food was great and I want to support the business, but the service was really terrible. The waitress gave our starter to her Mum who was sitting behind us as a 'mistake', so she would get it for free! Unbelievable! We were right by the counter so could see everything that was going on. Lovely food but really a shame about the service. I will be back (but perhaps on a night she isn't working!)

We were really looking forward to trying this but unfortunately it wasn't a great experience. We had reserved a table for two, 1 week in advance as it was my partners birthday. Upon arriving there seemed to be a confusion with the reservation and appeared to have been overbooked. We then ordered drinks but the drinks didn't arrive, 15 minutes later, when the starters had came and we had to ask for our drinks. The food was mediocre and was quite bland which is a real shame as we had high expectations after seeing all of the lovely reviews.

Great spot off the high street to grab some delicious Mexican food. There’s loads of burrito places around but not many serving a range of Mexican grub. It was well cooked, a nice environment and a good selection of drinks too. Thanks for a lovely meal

WE LOVED IT. As avid Mexican cuisine lovers it is hard to find a decent Mexican outside of London. I loved every dish, the margaritas were great and the tacos were a dream. Very family friendly as well. I can't wait to come here again.

Been a few time now. The food is delicious and fresh, there is a lovely relaxed but personable atmosphere and I absolutely love their Micheladas. Feel very fortunate to have this lovely independent restaurant on our doorstep.

I had seen the restaurant reviewed by Jay Rayner often they are not local so this was a good opportunity to see if we agreed! We were a group of 4 with different food tastes . We had starters and mains . Everything is freshly prepared and this can been seen with the open kitchen . The restaurant is quite small with some outside seating so I would recommend booking . We all agreed the food was flavoursome, nicely presented, good portions and plenty of choice. Nice Mexican beer and interesting cocktails too. If you like Mexican food definitely give it a try . The staff all seemed genuinely interested and proud of their food.

The food here is really good.😋 Proper authentic Mexican food. No tex mex as most places do. A definite gem in Surrey if you are looking for the real thing. Cannot wait to go back. It's a bit expensive but I guess that's what most places are these days specially around Guildford. Wish it was bigger . Service is very good just a little slow but that's cause it gets busy. Wish there were more proper mexican places around. The popularity of this place shows that there is demand for real mexican food and not for any more places thar serve tasteless burritos with flour tortillas. 🤮

Amazing food do need a few more veggie options

The food is fine. Was brought the wrong food and had entirely missing items. This was not reflected in our bill and they still wanted to charge us for a mandatory tip. Would not recommend to friends or anyone and that is a shame as I was so excited to attend.

Delicious food, fun and uplifting atmosphere.. absolutely fabulous hot sauces and really lovely staff. While the food was really yummy it was the staff that really made this experience great for a solo lunch diner. Friendly without being imposing, quick and efficient.. 100% recommend Gordo’s for an authentic Mexican experience! And the hot sauce selection really deserves a mention hot enough to be super fun but still full of so much flavour .. couldn’t really pick a favourite as they were all so delicious. Really enjoyed it thank you

This is a nice place but it is ridiculously overpriced for what you get! The food is delicious and the staff are nice, but £13 for one tostada with a bit of chicken on top with 3 tiny dips, no salad, no other sides, is not good value for money AT ALL, neither is £5 for a strawberry juice drink. It is a shame, as I would go back/recommend to others, if it weren't so overpriced.

Our favourite restaurant in Guildford! We've been here several times, and the chef consistently makes us vegan chimichangas that are simply delicious! The atmosphere is always fantastic, creating a great vibe every time we visit. Highly recommend!

Had high hopes for this but was quite disappointed. Booked table for 5.15pm and it was pretty quiet. Service very slow at first, took them almost 20 minutes to come over and take a drinks order. Drinks very expensive. Nachos to start were very dry, very little sour cream, no guacamole. Main courses tacos and chimichangas again very dry, almost no salsa, guacamole or sour cream. Food was all pretty dull and flavourless.

Great menu. Food was tasty and authentic Mexican. Service friendly. Suitable for the whole family as child options and portions. I enjoyed with friends. Sharing nachos, 2 drinks, (Mexican beers) and then Al pastor chimichangas which was delicious for about 30 pounds each. Would recommend and will return soon.

One of the best and most authentic Mexican meals I've had in the UK. This ticked every single box and had a lot of items that I struggle to find elsewhere; Dos Equis lager, cochinita pibil, ceviche (only on Saturday's) and Tres Leches cake too! My excitement and enjoyment of this place was through the roof and will 100% be coming back for more!

Viva Mexico! and Gordos restaurant. if you like tasty food like I do. this is your place to eat! amazing and very friendly. you can see the food serving and kitchen so I feel more comfortable eating it!. the restaurant Decor is fantastic light and colourful very welcoming! staff very friendly and i was there today and was crazy busy for a restaurant that opened just 2 weeks ago! well done and thank you I will def be back and recommend you guys come and try this food! didnt took a pic today but on my return will take and post it.. i was just admiring it all and eating none stop... fair price too for the quality of the food I must say!

This was my second time here. The time before was on a Tuesday early evening and we hadn't booked but they had a table for us. It was quiet and the food was quick, delicious and the service decent. This time around, on a Thursday evening, it was much busier and while the food continued to be great, the service unfortunately let it down. While the staff were friendly they weren't particularly helpful. We had to ask if they were ready to take our drink order, when I ordered peppermint tea they brought regular tea and to settle the bill took a while. It's a real shame because this place could be something special if it picked up the service side of it. I'd be rushing back if it were not for the fact that we felt they weren't exactly happy we were there, wanting 'things'. Please don't rest on your laurels (or your Jay Rayner review).

Excellent food and ambience! We were a big group and they managed to serve us all. The food is amazing, one of the best that you can find in Guildford. Highly recommended!

Is hard to find amazing mexican food in surrey! But this place has it all! Food, drinks and desserts! Everything is delicious 🤤

Very quiet at lunchtime but bright and colourful decor was very cheerful. The food was pleasant enough but portions were very small and it felt like the ingredients were very portion controlled . We had 3 pineapple mock-tails , nachos to share and 3 quesadillas.. the bill was £90 which felt overpriced for what we had. Service was ok to start with but when thinking of having a desert the young lady was busy on her phone and basically ignored us. £10.95 for cheesecake put us off desert so we left, sadly still feeling quite hungry . The prices were considerably higher than on the website … suggest it would be a helpful to update that .

The other reviews were not wrong! Love this place, the food and the staff were great! We had tonnes on food plus drinks for our party of six and the bill was really reasonable! Everything was great but the Al pastor, beef brisket and prawn cerviche were amazing! Shout out to the Churros as well.. they were delicious!

Wow.....the nicest food I have had in a long while, just lovely simple combinations of fresh ingredients. We just had the Tacos with each of the different choice fillings. All were soooo....tasty, proper good good freshly prepared with killer cocktails.....

Excellent food and friendly staff! My only wish is that there would be some more fresh fish options like tuna tostadas but the pork tacos are incredible !! Service and atmosphere is excellent but try book as it's popular in Guildford!

Tasty food, small portions though for mains so need starters for good meal. Makes it expensive. Vegans be careful as they gave us dairy on the enchiladas which was clear to us in how it looked and tasted and they didn't believe us and said it was vegan. Couldn't eat it and just left.
