The other reviews were not wrong! Love this place, the food and the staff were great! We had tonnes on food plus drinks for our party of six and the bill was really reasonable! Everything was great but the Al pastor, beef brisket and prawn cerviche were amazing! Shout out to the Churros as well.. they were delicious!

Great food with a great menu, love to go back and try more

Wow.....the nicest food I have had in a long while, just lovely simple combinations of fresh ingredients. We just had the Tacos with each of the different choice fillings. All were soooo....tasty, proper good good freshly prepared with killer cocktails.....

Excellent food and friendly staff! My only wish is that there would be some more fresh fish options like tuna tostadas but the pork tacos are incredible !! Service and atmosphere is excellent but try book as it's popular in Guildford!

Tasty food, small portions though for mains so need starters for good meal. Makes it expensive. Vegans be careful as they gave us dairy on the enchiladas which was clear to us in how it looked and tasted and they didn't believe us and said it was vegan. Couldn't eat it and just left.

We had a nice visit. The waiter who greeted was friendly and welcoming. It’s quite a small space so if you have children/prams in tow it can feel limiting. We were sat right at the end next to the TV which was not the nicest as it was also right by the loo and the tables are pretty close together so it’s a squeeze to get to the bench. The food was ok. Nachos had cheap cheese on and were a bit burnt. The guac tastes ok. The tacos were ok. Wasn’t super impressed overall.

Lunchtime visit. Went off the back of a Jay Rayner review. He was bang on! This place is lovely. Engaging staff, really fresh ingredients made at the open kitchen. Lots of gorgeous flavours running round the mouth long after lunch ended. Celiac friend also very well catered for. Many thanks to all at Gordo.

4 of us came to celebrate my birthday, and I enjoyed it so much. I found everything about Gordos to be excellent. The food was great, very fresh, lots of flavours and not too spicy. I am no exert on Mexican food but Gordos is definitely my favourite Mexican restaurant I had vegetable empanadas to start which were delicious and vegetable enchiladas for mains. My wife couldn't eat both her vegetarian chimichangas so I helpfully scoffed that as well. Fantastic. The service was excellent, the ambience in the restaurant was charming and the cocktails were great. I had such a great time and will be going back, without a doubt.

A black bean and three-cheese quesadilla is, of course, the grandest of toasted cheese sandwiches elevated to main event. If this is all too much softness, have a chimichanga: a crisp, golden, deep-fried tortilla wrap, filled with any of the above proteins, then dolloped with cheese and guacamole, sour cream and chilli.

First of all I should say that I spent 5 years living in México and I went with my Mexican partner so we are harsh critics. But we hoped for more given the reviews thus far. Pastor very dry, I don't know how long it had been on the trompo. Beef brisket was pretty tasty, but wasn't authentic flavours (is it meant to be birria or barbacoa style?). If you have a large appetite you could eat 3 portions (9 tacos) quite comfortably which will set you back ~£35 (plus service charge). Margaritas tasted odd, perhaps its the tequila and licor they use. And £10 for a michelada (beer with salsas) is extortionate! It all had us feeling very underwhelmed; this is a shame because the area needs a fantastic Mexican restaurant. If you want a proper Mexican culinary experience make the extra effort and go to Mestizo in London and you wont be disappointed. P.s. The owner seems to be telling journalists he is Mexican. But if its the same guy we met last year he is from Ecuador. He told me (English person) he is Mexican before my Mexican partner asked which part (and didn't recognise his accent) after which he backtracked and said he went to México on holiday and loved the food. Fair enough, but stop with the fibs!

It was interesting to go somewhere with something different. I like Mexican food and this was quite nice. For me it needed a little something more to make it ‘pop’, but I enjoyed my meal. We went there for an early lunch and sat in an area with 3 tables for couple right next to each other. The waiter kept trying to get the next couples to sit on top of us dispute having an empty restaurant. Happily, both of them said they want to sit further away

Lovely food and nice atmosphere. Very busy,probably best to book.

Really enjoyed Gordos. Went with a friend on a Friday night. We had to wait a short while for a table, but it was worth it. We ordered both the chilli and vegetable empanadas for starters and a few different tacos for the main. The food was excellent and washed down with a lovely margarita.

Great little place in Guildford. Quiet lunchtime but meant they were happy for us to stay on and chat. Really friendly, prompt service and excellent food at a good price. They were happy to adapt dishes to allow for one of our allergies too. All freshly made in house and the cocktails went down a treat. Would definitely recommend. Will be back next time I'm in town.

Actually very decent Mexican food in the UK, finally! The tacos are legit as is the quesadilla. The nachos are pretty good, as are the chilaquiles, although both could benefit from better distribution of topping to tortilla chip. Really enjoyed the veggie enchiladas too, very authentic. The service is a sadly a bit subpar but they’re also extremely busy so could be a function of that.

The staff were helpful and hard working, though perhaps suffering from their own popularity. It was very busy. The food was authentic and super tasty. The atmosphere was basic, but really fun.

Such a refreshing place to eat in Guildford as its saturated with chains. Having seen the review in the guardian we went with high expectations and were not disappointed. The restaurant has a lively vibe, but not overwhelming and the staff were great. The food was perfect, everything was well presented, beautifully cooked, fresh and tasted devine.

Food is very authentic Mexican. But serving of food is slow.

Good nachos. Beef grill tacos were bland and beef was chewy. Colourful decor. Great music. Thoughtful wait staff (asked if we would like the hot spice left out for our children). Disappointed a 12.5% service charge was added to the bill as standard (we were a small party of 4). I prefer to give a tip at my discretion.

We've eaten here many many times and the recent guardian review is well merited. Regardless of this, this is one of the BEST places to eat in Guildford and always has been. The atmosphere and hospitality and the quality of the food is second to none. We always want the Al pastor but the rest of the menu is excellent, tonight we fell in love with the chilli con carne emphinadas. The desserts are all fantastic but for me the blood orange sorbet is the one. Loyal customers for good reason, thank you for feeding us so well, I can't wait to visit again. A true gem.

Extremely expensive for what it is.

As a former Los Angeleno, I'm always on the lookout for proper Mexican food. THIS is it: homemade CORN tortillas for the soft tacos and tortilla chips, homemade sauces (& bottled ones I haven't seen since LA) and marinated, slow cooked pork and brisket (amongst other delights). Best tacos I've had this side of the Atlantic (& up there in my top 3 overall) and my future restaurant of choice when I'm next in Guildford (cheers Jay Raynor!).

My partner and I visited Gordo's for lunch. The food and the atmosphere made us feel like we were back in Mexico. The food is nothing like the high street chain or car food places, it tastes authentic and presented beautifully. The food and ingredients are high quality, the experience is only made better by the kind and welcoming staff. Highly recommended!

I normally review restaurants Gordos is more of a Mexican street food cafe than fine dining but it is good. I mean lip smacking good. Fantastic authentic Mexican food in a friendly noisy atmosphere with totally scrumptious food wine and cocktails. The staff are happy to explain the menu and offer suggestions just be a bit cautious of some of the on table sauces they certainly let you know they can kick

Portions look small but were very filling, grilled chicken felt abit plain. Food was definitely delicious and wouldve rated 5 stars if it had a better atmosphere, maybe some live music is needed or better music played? Service was slightly lacking as we had to wait a while to be served and to receive our bill at the end. Everything was slightly pricy on the menu nothing under £10 our bill came up to nearly £50 for 3 dishes (one of them being a childs portion) and one drink. But the experience was overall lovely. Thank you.

Nipped in this evening to get my husband a chimichanga. (Not the easiest thing to find). Staff were polite, friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. The food was cooked fresh to order and tasted delicious. Will 100% be back.

Friendly atmosphere, amazing food, great service 👌

Went with my 12 year old daughter for a quick celebratory meal. Super busy on a Friday night (you need to book!). Small but great buzz and really friendly, but the service was a bit soso (didn’t get asked for drinks or orders for 15 minutes after sitting down; tables have to be small as the space is tight but all a bit cramped). But a lovely meal, amazing fresh and vibrant flavours and will definitely go back.

Delicious, authentic... just perfect!

Delicious food and margaritas, especially liked the fish tacos. Would love to see some new veggie tacos on the menu and some sides so we could have Mexican rice or some chips & guac. Also loved the decor but maybe dimmer lighting would have been good for atmosphere :)

Good little local restaurant, great atmosphere. One of the few independently-run restaurants in Guildford. But all three times I've visited, they've left me grumbling, unfortunately. Visited at 9pm on a Saturday, this time. Portions are small. If you're hungry, get a starter - ideally two. Taco portions are three of the same filling on really small (4-inch) tortillas with no sides (£14). Not enough for a meal. Chimichangas provide a slightly larger offering. But I would not recommend any of the other main course selections tried by our group alone unless you want to go hungry. Free chips and dips are not a Mexican restaurant tradition which is honoured here. We chose a portion of nachos (£13) with chorizo for a starter to share but one of our group of five could have demolished the meagre portion alone and had ample room for a main course. Perhaps this choice was the faults our number, having just come back from Mexico, expecting a Mexican restaurant of slightly higher clout. Three starters between a group of five would have been a better judgement. Service was lacking, to say the least. On both of our two drink orders, one drink was forgotten and had to be asked for a second time. We waited for ages for the bill. We didn't stay for desert because we couldn't be bothered with the hassle. Gordos, I'd love to love you. I adore Mexican food. I love to have an authentic local Mexican restaurant. But I do not love Mexican restaurants with tiny portions and inattentive service. I have had far better abroad.

It was ok, however it isn't somewhere we'd return to. The food was relatively expensive for what you got and we've had better tasting tacos at a non-mexican bar / restaurant in Southsea. One starter to share, two mains (tacos) and two drinks for £50.

An amazing restaurant and brilliant food, we went on a Monday evening and the place was packed and buzzing, food was all freshly prepared and tasted wonderful. Great atmosphere and decent music playing in the background. A must try 5 STAR !!

Had a meal for 19 and were happily accommodated by the staff. Food was great and servers very attentive.

Went for a relaxed lunch and ordered the meal deal (£14.99 for lemonade/coke, a starter, and a chimichanga). I had the veggie options and there were other veggie dishes not included in the deal. The menu also seemed to have a number of GF options. The fresh lemonade was delightful and all the food was delicious, so we were very satisfied with the deal we chose. Service was a little slow but we were given complimentary fresh tortilla chips and dips (also delicious) while we waited... we could tell the staff were busy and we weren't in a rush. Would recommend as the food was great, looking forward to our next visit!

Very disappointing. We were really looking forward to trying Gordo's after seeing all the good reviews but we were very let down by our experience. The service was friendly but very slow despite us being the only people there at the time. The cocktails didn't taste great and were very overpriced for what you get. The garlic and chilli prawn starter was tasty but unfortunately, that was the only thing we enjoyed. We ordered the cochinita pibil (braised pork) tacos and the cod loin tacos. They looked lovely but did not smell good at all and both were incredibly bland with no spice. The pork did not taste fresh and the cod loin pieces were small and dry. Not sure if they were having an off day but we won't be returning after our experience and felt it was very overpriced for the quality of food and drinks that we received.

This place is Fantastic. It really is the best place to eat in the whole town. I had read about it and passed it today so went in for lunch. The food is out of this world prepared as you order it. I really am blow away

We stopped off to have some birthday lunch with my wife. The atmosphere was nice with the decor was looking great. The staff were friendly and prompt. We were one of two tables at the time and had no problems getting the servers attention or asking for recommendations. The food... It was fantastic. Made to order right by our table. Seasoned perfectly, not greasy, cooked to perfection. Timed perfectly with the cocktails we ordered. Unfortunately my wife's order was mixed up with a meat dish (she is vegetarian), however this was no fuss, they remade her dish straight away. Only critique I have was that the cocktails did take a little time to get to us (second round), however this was because they were being made fresh right next to our table. They were delicious though! Highly recommended to anyone wanting a good Mexican meal!

Don't understand why this is so highly rated. The food is ok but pretty overpriced for the portion size you get. Pulled pork was very dry and under flavoured. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff but wouldn't go back again due to the quality of the food.

What a good job Gordos are doing of gently sharing the real authentic Mexican food experience instead of watered-down franchise Tex-Mex meal (which is all good just not real Mexican). The clean flavours, authentic ingredients , natural colours (for example the well-balanced Guacamole), exciting cocktails and cosy yet well-spaced were all component parts bought together by excellent and helpful service. I didn't take any photos because those on the website are such an honest and accurate depiction. Muchos gracias...volveremos! Mark L Peart

We were looking for somewhere to eat something, and we found an incredible place, from minute one all the staff were wonderful and charming. It is a place full of atmosphere and delicious dishes! They are large portions and everything is gluten-free! A paradise for celiacs. We have been a couple of times and we are sure that we will return more! 100% recommendable!

Absolutely love going to Gordos. Always a warm welcome and the food and drinks are excellent. Lovely vibrant and fun atmosphere.

Seriously the only true Mexican south of the Rio Wey. Independently run, character-full decor and music, customised service... three times so far I have felt spoiled, though I am always keener on unique experiences. Added to this is the passion they put in making each taco and enchilada colourful, decorated right in front of you. The food tastes good and really fresh, and is delicately presented, unlike the Tex-Mex chains. The reason for 4× is just size-wise: A companion pointed out recently that even with the complimentary super tasty warm nachos, bigger appetites might need to add up sides to their main meals. Or maybe we just had too many strawberry margaritas and forgot about the meal? I look forward to coming back again, also because of their occasional Mariachi nights. P.S. How do you always make the plates and cutlery shine like new?

Been there twice and both times it was a great experience. Good value for money, nice mexican food (or I think it is as I never been to Mexico) and the staff is very friendly.... definitely a place to try if you like casual ambiance and good food.

I generally don’t feel tempted to write a review for a restaurant in Google even when they have good food and service. For this restaurant, however, I deviated from my usual habit because of the quality of food, service, hospitality, and warmth. We had Tacos (Al Pastor, Beef Grill, cochinita pibil), Beef empanadas, and drinks. At the end of the meal, we were stuffed. In all honesty, I had never expected to find authentic Mexican food in Guildford. I will recommend this restaurant without any reservations.

What an amazing addition to Guildford. Lovely atmosphere, great drinks and amazing food. Particularly enjoyed the Cod Loin Tacos. The best Mexican food we’ve found in the UK! Everything was cooked to perfection, the staff were all so friendly and hospitable. The food was sooo tasty - can’t wait to come back. 10/10 would recommend!

Found the pork chimichanga to be nice but nothing outstanding. Service was mixed as those that greeted us inside and when we leaving were lovely but the ones that were waiting our tables were a bit more dismissive.
