We took the opportunity to attend an evening event of dinner at the Walled Garden cafe. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere with divine food. Some of the ingredients were straight from the walled gardens themselves. Small and intimate was perfect. Staff were knowledgeable regarding ingredients and clearly proud of the quality and selection - rightly so. What a lovely evening. We really hope there are more dates in the diary. Well done team.

As someone has previously mentioned, this is in an excellent location and is very popular. This was not my first time but will be my last. I was warned by the lady at the shop, as I was asked walking through if I was going to the cafe, that there would be a wait. Straightaway you observe that there is actually only two people 'front of house.' Tables were taken with clients but also quite a few tables not cleared. Profit over customers is not good but then again they have a lot of visitors that will only visit once so there will be no rush for change .....

I never wrote any review before . We live locally and have to say this was my worst experience in terms of food and price in Scotland at all. Food was very expensive, instead of an egg roll you get a cheap white bread with eggs for £6.75! Cappuccino (small) was £4.25! They also may charge you for what you don’t order (juice in our case) and won’t cancel when you ask them to do so because they don’t know how. I won’t be coming to this place again. It’s perhaps good for tourists who are willing to pay double prices but not for the locals or food lovers.

Such a beautiful cafe but always feel they could do so much better. Very slim choice of menu and cakes/tray bakes don’t have a wow factor about them. Had the Cullen Skink which was lovely followed by Eve’s pudding which resembled slops. I think I got the last dollop left and had very little sponge if any at all and all apples. Really feel this cafe needs a huge overhaul of menu to keep up with standards of other local establishments.

Things have changed at the venue. The gardens have matured and pleasant to see. . My surprise was in the cafe Judith and her staff were busy but not too busy to leave us unattended for too long. The staff were so nice and really attentive especially around my wife , whi is gluten free. The food was so good , tasty and value for money. I thoroughly enjoyed my home made houmous but the gluten free bacon, brie and their own cranberry sauce sandwich . I really pleasant experience for us and we will return, sooner rather than later. Thank you team Gordon Castle.

The most wonderful afternoon I had with family and friends spent walking around the most outstanding gardens, with the most attentive staff, followed by the most delicious afternoon tea. We were looked after so beautifully and the cakes were just sublime. It felt very spoiling and I will definitely going back with more friends and family.

Arrived just before 11 so waitress told us to choose a table until it was officially open . She took our order which was coffees and two bacon rolls. Coffees came soon after but we waited about 20 minutes for bacon rolls. By this time coffees were cold. We then told waitress to cancel bacon rolls . Paid for coffees and left never to return. Nothing wrong with waitress who, I think, might have been left down by kitchen.

So disappointed in the service we received after stopping off for lunch on a Saturday. Initially we were shown to a table which was nice and efficient, but sadly after that it went downhill rapidly. Firstly three other ( obviously Local) families and couples who had arrived after us were served and their orders taken. Ok so have patience and wait, but not for another 25 minutes. On not waiting any longer went to the counter and told the waiting personnel that we were leaving and the reason why, and the reaction a shrug of the shoulders and a smirk on his face, not exactly the response I had been expecting. We continued the discussion which going by the way the conversation was going was not going to prove fruitful. The result was all the staff young and old did not seem to care which is very disappointing. On the way out one young lad told me that we would now be served as a matter of Priority, sorry too late. The lack of anyone senior taking control and overseeing the delivery of orders being taken and delivered in a timely fashion was none existent. Like I said have been on multiple occasions and all has been first class, but sadly will not be returning. Many thanks for the service and excellent food on all our previous visits, will now have to look for somewhere else.

Had a cheese board and charcuterie board- £31.95 for two. Overpriced and mediocre. Very stale bread- so hard someone had heated it a little to improve it. Certainly wasn't left from the previous day. There on Wednesday and cafe is closed Monday/Tuesday. Had it been left from the weekend! I mentioned this to staff and waitress was very offhand. Mumbled something incoherent about getting the wrong bread. I asked her to bring us more oatcakes to replace bread as there were only two on the cheese board. She did but no real apology. Service was dreadful - waited ages to have our order taken and was on the point of leaving when someone came to our table. When I went to pay the bill she asked if I would like to add a tip on my card. I declined. Sad to see my native country still suffers from poor service and inhospitality . Wouldn't visit there again. But my faith was restored when we went for coffee and cake in a coffee shop-Greenacres- in Fochabers. Pleasant young woman serving and great service. And yes I did leave a tip

Visited the Walled Garden Cafe after seeing some excellent reviews on line. Menu did look very enticing but service was non-existent! Came in and picked up menus, told staff we were outside, ‘no problem’ they said. We waited 15 mins. Came back inside and said could we place an order please, staff said they would be ‘two seconds’ so went back outside. 10 minutes later, we gave up and went to The Quaich in town. Would have been one star but we did buy some fresh fruit from the stall on the way out which was delicious. Highly recommend that bit!

We booked afternoon tea for a friends birthday. Unfortunately she doesn’t like mayo, so we mentioned that at booking. When we arrived we were shown straight to our table and we ordered drinks. The afternoon tea arrived & it looked lovely. But because we had said no mayo for my friend, both sets of sandwiches came with no mayo. Although the bread was lovely, we had 2 lots of cheese sandwiches, which was disappointing as there are lots of different sandwiches that can be made without mayo, beef & horseradish, smoked salmon & cream cheese, chicken. The other items were a bite size quiche, sausage roll & pigs in blankets, along with the mini cakes & scones. Please note that if you go for afternoon tea, go early if you want to look around the shop, as we came out at 4pm & sadly the shop was already closed.? So we had to take the veg back into the cafe to be able to pay for it.

5 members of staff behind the bar, absolutely a free for all to who gets processed first, que ignored members of staff in willing to enforce order. You will pay for a premium service and get none in return. Outside seating is a free for all no real way of order to a seat as multiple people might claim and you don't know when you will get serviced. I have been to this venue a lot and they have always struggled with competent staff but not numbers, I believe if they had a member of staff per person they will still be no better. Management should be held accountable. Gardens are nice but works out to be an expensive short walk around a half used garden. I'd would still recommend a visit but be prepared to be let down by staff and if they venue could charge for breathing the air with in the confines then they would. The shop is ridicules pricing.

The food was nice but unfortunately they were in a real muddle with the service. The staff were pleasant but we had to wait ages to order puddings and coffees despite asking three or four times and then only half the order arrived so I had to chase them again. It got quite awkward in the end. I appreciate that they may have been short staffed but they didn’t seem to have any system for tracking orders and ensuring that they were completed.

Ordered a chicken pesto salad for £15.95. If you expect more than basic lettuce, pale orange salad tomatoes, and cucumber in a salad, you will be disappointed. The chicken was big chunks of cold, dry chicken breast with shop bought pesto on it with a bit of cole slaw. It was an effort to get through it. Really bland and disappointing. Worst salad I have even been served in a restaurant, I'm surprised a chef would think it is acceptable. I wouldn't order it again. Tip for them: potato salad, cous cous, olives, nice cherry tomatoes, decent salad leaves, beetroot, shredded chicken that is chewable would all improve this offering and make it worth the money. Nobody enjoys eating salad the way you serve it currently.

Table booked for five adults for lunch today. Restaurant was very quiet when we arrived as it was early. We were given menus and then waited quite a while before our order was taken. After some time a waiter came and asked us to confirm the order. Drinks arrived and there was one missing. The food arrived and it was ok but nothing special. I had quiche and salad. Suffice to say there was enough salad to feed the five of us and one piece of quiche on the top of it. I only managed to eat half of the salad so that was a lot of waste. We then sat for ages waiting for the plates to be cleared - so long in fact that I started stacking them myself. At that point a waiter appeared and removed them. We then waited to see if anyone offered us dessert - no. My sister-in-law got up and found a menu and we ordered 3 ice creams and 2 espresso brownies. The ice cream came in a tiny dish - although I'm told it was nice enough. As for the brownies - I have never come across such a solid brownie. At no point did anyone come and ask if everything was ok with our meal. The staff all looked about 16yrs old. I'm sure they were doing their best but there didn't appear to be an experienced member of staff to keep things flowing. All in all, a disappointing experience.

I have visited this place several times to use the cafe and walk around the gardens. I have given it 4 stars as I love the concept but really think a few changes could be made that would really make it so much better. The cafe used to have a much more extensive menu, but now it seems to be just salads and sandwiches. With the produce grown in the garden, the menu could be much more extensive and before lockdown, it certainly was. I ordered the cheese ploughmans, which consisted of 4 small pieces of cheese, 2 oatcakes and some olives and a chutney and was priced at £17.99. I felt ripped off to be honest as you could not call it a ploughmans and I felt the price was extortionate for what I received. Moving onto the gardens. These are lovely and well kept, but again overpriced at £9 for an adult and £4.50 for a child. The child’s price was even more inflated considering all of the sand seemed to have been washed away by weather and not been replaced as the area is basically a giant sand pit with next to no sand. I do feel that to keep the locals onboard and not just overprice the facility based on a one time visit from tourists, that if you did a reduced price offer for the garden if you eat in the cafe, this would provide a much better value for money experience. Like I said, I have visited several times, and would use the venue more often if better priced.

Post covid, many places in this area are struggling to recruit hospitality staff, and I think this is an issue here too, they seem pretty understaffed in the cafe - we gave up waiting to be served after 30 mins, but then happily discovered the take away kiosk which sold very good coffee and excellent home made cake ( reasonable prices, in my view), where we were served immediately and we enjoyed our snack on a bench taking in the lovely views in the garden.. just lovely. Miserable experience. Service was slow and staff unhelpful and miserable. Food ok but not great. The grounds are beautiful so advise taking a picnic. Maybe the owners should train their staff a little better to make a better customer experience. It’s not cheap.

We were lucky to be able to sit outside, enjoying the sunshine. Have been before, the food was as good as ever, with the portions being very generous! Service was quick, very polite and friendly.

Visited yesterday for lunch and the service from the staff was excellent, everyone was so friendly and talkative. Ordered the Ciabatta with the Bacon & Brie and this was great and filling along with a bowl of the mushroom soup which was excellent. We booked a table on the website and was glad we did as they were busy but they made sure the bookings were made priority. The raspberry lemonade the serve was so refreshing on a hot day!!Would highly recommend.

I had a lovely experience today. I was served initially by the manager, and then by a lovely young lad behind the bar who can only presume is the supervisor. You could tell he had a heavy workload, however he was very polite and attentive to every customer in the queue. The only downside was that the 2 other members of staff seemed to be ignoring the managers and supervisors instructions which would have prevented customers from waiting. Instead it seemed as if they were twiddling their thumbs and were escaping to the kitchen for long periods of time. In all, had an amazing experience both with the garden and cafe. Special thanks to the two members of management for making my experience complete. Would highly recommend.

I booked in advance for afternoon tea for my husbands birthday. Had to wait in a que for 10 minutes before being seated, then waited a further 35 minutes for food to arrive, which didn’t. Ended up leaving after 45 minutes without the afternoon tea. Very very disappointing experience.

Took over two hours just to get soup and coffee. 30 minute queue to order, then ONE HOUR wait for food and another half hour to get coffee. Nice staff but totally understaffed for the number of customers. Not up to the standard one expects normally at the Gordon Castle Cafe.Tried five times to book table in advance, no answer to phoneGardens looking lovely!

Very disappointing breakfast menu, ordered toast in which one slice was burnt and the other undercooked! The bread was thick, dry, doughy and tasteless! I did let the waitress know in which her remark was “it’s fine for a sandwich, but not great for toast”! Why serve it if you know how bad it is! The 5 sets of cutlery was plonked on the table along with the butter and marmalade, not ideal with the current COVID situation! The staff who were cleaning tables did a minimal wipe down around the dishes that were in the middle, no seats were wiped down. I’d have expected more cleaning and more effort towards hygiene just now. I certainly won’t be rushing back here again.

It was so busy we had to queue, and we were in the extension part of the cafe, but it was worth it. The coffee and cakes were lovely.

This used to be an excellent venue for lunch, always had something different and out of the ordinary on. Maybe it’s down to Covid or other factors but has now turned into a carbon copy of every other ‘cafe’ in the area. Panini, soup and sandwiches. Quality is still good but nothing special. Hopefully the old Gordon Castle will return when conditions allow.

The home made soup was really good and the coronation chicken sandwich was easily the best I have tasted. I am not surprised that many tables were reserved as the quality of what was on offer was excellent.

Limited choices, limited indoor seating, both constrained by the virus; but food good and plenty of outdoor eating space. A good place to eat if you are visiting these lovely gardens

Attended on a Sunday with the intention of having lunch with my wife and sons family. Being aware of the Covid problems, I attempted to check the menu on their website, but apart from covid warnings, no menu.We attended to find no hot food available, only sandwiches and soup, but we decided to order anyway to support a local business. Surprisingly, payment was requested upon ordering, and not afterwards, as usual.Food was delivered. Sandwiches premade and bread hard. We had ordered 2 x cajun chicken, and one was tuna. We didn't make a fuss and one of our party ate it regardless. The coronation chicken filling I had was tasteless. It wasn't until we left, that we realised the ham sandwich on brown bread, ordered for our 2 year old granddaughter was delivered with with white bread. My wife found a small but definite hair in her kale soup, so that was left.Social distancing is set as 1 metre within the restaurant, but for some reason, only half of the premises is being used, my daughter in law was very uncomfortable with a large family group behind her, and as a result, that distance was unable to be maintained.Lastly, the place is normally quite cosy, but today it was cold. This is due to a plastic chain leading in from outside to separate in from out, thus leaving the door unable to be closed. To be fair, when the waitresses was informed of our food problems, she intimated she could give us another sandwich to take away, (no thank you), and she offered a refund on the soup it we had our receipt (not offered on payment), but we were scunnered and just wanted to leave. This is normally one of our favourite places, so I am sorry to leave such a negative review, but I am afraid we will have to refrain from visiting until things are back to normal.

Gordon Castle Walled Garden is absolutely lovely - huge, very productive, a marvellous place to spend a quiet hour or so. The cafe does not let it down. We just had coffee and cake, but both were above average standard, and the price was quite reasonable. We would certainly go again if we were in the area.

My friend and I had afternoon tea yesterday (18.09.2020) and were very very disappointed with the experience. The sandwiches were OK but the tiny sausage rolls were inedible. Don’t know if they were frozen in the middle but it was impossible to get your teeth into them. The two little scones were so hard and very dry and certainly weren’t fresh. We did try a couple of the other cakes on offer but weren’t impressed. I can’t recommend the Afternoon tea and I certainly won’t be back.

Had a really enjoyable afternoon here with two friends today. All the Covid protocols were in place and we felt very safe.We had made one special request and it was granted with no problem. The afternoon tea was tasty, plentiful and very good value. The only problem was that because we were outside, the tea got cold very quickly, but the friendly waitresses were happy to bring hot refills whenever we asked. We finished the afternoon with a walk around the beautiful walled garden. Will be back soon!

We had friends staying with us and we wanted to visit the Walled Garden as we had recently moved up from Kent so off we went even though the forecast was not great!!!First stop was the shop..........a WOW selection of Gin, gifts and amazing lotion plus a bear in a kilt so who could resist!!!As the snow started to come down we left out purchases to go for a trip (rather hasty given the white stuff) round the garden which although was not in all it's glory was still awesome. The Potty shed is a tip back in time and the video was full of info.Next stop the restaurant!Another WOW moment as my husbands favourite Cullen Skink was on the menu and he has to report it was the best he's tasted!!!Sadly lockdown happened but we will be back again soon!

Came for a family lunch after checking lunch menu online. On arrival found a very limited menu not what was on the website, sandwiches with no side salad or crisps, cullen skink soup with no fish in it. All served in takeaway containers and over priced. No staff present to clean or clear tables, disappointed!

We ate on the sunny terrace, then walked around the amazing gardens, full of lavender, many other flowers and vegetables, some of which were for sale in the produce shop. There was an eco friendly playground which many children were enjoying.Highly recomend this place, peaceful and tranquil.

Awesome place with a gigantic choice of scotch whisky as well as a large collection of japanese whisky. This combined with a absolutley cozy atmosphere, delicious food and very very friendly staff makes it a fabulous place to spend the evening. I had the classic haggis balls as a starter, the fish&chips as main and toffee cake as a dessert. Everything was just outstanding. It was so good, we will pay it another visit tonight.

We highly recommend Threaplands. Perfect for buying a memorable gift, or some plants. But, also for the cafe there, which offers a great selection of food (all table service). We recently bought our Christmas tree here and will certainly be visiting often. Very friendly staff and plenty of free parking
