Just came here as we visiting hull Lovelly chips fish teacake and a cuppa the only thing they say. It's a bread cake it's not its a teacake

I have had fish & chips from this take away a couple of times recently and do not recognise the bad comments I have seen in other reviews. The food l have been served was always cooked fresh, piping hot and of good quantity and quantity. The fish was cooked in a very nice batter and thoroughly crisp top & bottom, no excess fat. The chips were tasty and soft, which is how I like them but again, no excess fat and certainly not ‘greasy’ as one reviewer said. We had 2 haddock, which were described as ‘small portions’ and they were ample size, the fish being £5.30 each. As far as I am aware, the new owners are not running the restaurant which was upstairs. I will certainly be back.

Absolutely shocking. Ordered online and money was taken, only to be told they don’t do it on there anymore? And to sort the refund myself! Re ordered in the shop, got home and the food was not even cooked!! Tried to call 10 times to have no answer. Use to love this place but not now it’s under new management.

This chip shop must be under new management as the food has really gone down hill. The food last year was lovely but now the chips were under cooked and greasy also they were cold. Will never use this chip shop again. Food that bad would not even give it to a dog. Waste of £8.80 as went in bin.

In K-u-H for the Rugby League World Cup and came into this warm friendly chippy for pre-match chips, gravy and ‘patty’: fried mash with parsley and onion. A novelty for us but tasty hearty and filling.

Just had haddock and chips meal X 2 at the Golden Fry, so delicious, fish was freshest we've ever had, crispy chips and massive pot of tea. Really good value, you need to go. Oh, and they have a great scheme where for £2 you can buy a hot meal for a homeless person, what a fab establishment.

Popped in for Fish n Chips. Undoubtedly the worst I've ever had. Soggy grease laden batter, overcooked rubbery 'fish' (If it actually was fish?), the chips were just dripping in gunky fat, and actually smelled nasty. I've had far better fish n chips from a van. Avoid this place at all costs.

We called here at the Golden Fry Fish And Chip Restaurant in Hull on our way home from Scarborough on Friday 18th September, 2020. Very friendly staff in the upstairs Restaurant. We ordered Haddock, chips and mushy peas. The food was excellent. Only problem - meal was too big for us as the portions were large. Otherwise it was well cooked and delicious.

Excellent service today as I called in for some Hull patties. They only had 4 cooked so I asked for the 4 and told them I was taking them home to Cambridgeshire where I live because I miss them. They are one of my favourite delicacies from my home town. They said that if I do want any patties, they could deliver them by post so I could put them in the freezer. Popped in while shopping in Hull on 5/9/20, and we weren't disappointed great friendly staff a fantastic fish chips mushy peas side salad ad bread n butter plus cup of tea each for £19. Had a great day thanks to all.

I decided on the spur of the moment to pop in today for lunch and it certainly did not disappoint me. I got there at 12:45pm (approximately) and I only waited a couple of minutes to be seated after signing in and sanitising my hands. I was greeted by a very friendly lady who brought a menu to me (was given ample time to look at the menu by she came back to take my order). I placed an order for small fish and chips and a can of Coca-Cola,within 5 minutes she came back to my table with my drink and condiments in readiness for my meal. I had been seated for no less than 15 mins when my meal was brought to my table. I looked at my meal and my first thought was heck, is this meant to be a small fish and chips because boy, it was anything but. I was presented with what I felt was a medium sized fish, plenty of chips (which were both freshly cooked) and a lovely fresh salad plus a wedge of lemon on the side. My meal was a superb price without the Eat Out to Help Out discount and I will definitely be returning to the chip shop/restaurant. The two staff members who served me (they lady who seated me/took my order and the gentleman who brought my meal to my table) who both friendly, professionally and really know what excellent customer service is all about. Thank you from a delighted customer who will definitely return.

After doing our shopping 🛍, we saw golden fry open during lockdown,so we decided to give it a go , I had Haddock and chips and my partner had span fritter and chips , it was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had that includes Magpie in Whitby, we have been back many times now , we’ve tried many things since then and cannot fault anything , you have to try it ..

Accidentally found this fish and chip shop and thought I’d give it a go. They fry in oil too which is rare to find. I ordered a fish butty and and a portion of chips and my god it was bloody beautiful. Friendly staff too. Would highly recommend.

Just tried the Halibut absolutely loved it..served with new potatoes and salad, definitely be having it again..never disappointed had many many meals from golden fry thought id try something different..thanks John and Mish

Did last bit my shopping and stop by for a nice piece a fish and chips , the fish was fabulous cooked so haddock just melts in your mouth and succulent and chips and peas and side salad . Very good sized portions and staff are with out doubt friendliest I ever experienced. And more to point reindeer on wall was fabulous. A very good fish and chip shop .

I was Christmas shopping in Hull city centre and fancied a cuppa and a bite to eat. I saw a few weeks ago that Golden Fry had been awarded a 5* rating from the council for the scores on the doors rating scheme so I decided to pop in for lunch. I went upstairs to the seated restaurant rather than opting for takeaway. I was asked to take a seat at a table of my choice. I sat down and was soon asked if I was ready to order.I ordered a medium fish, chips and mushy peas with a pot of tea. It didn't take long to receive my drink and the food was obviously cooked fresh to order as it took around 15 mins longer to arrive. The fish was in a lovely crisp batter with a large ramekin of peas and homemade chips. It had a small side salad to which was slightly unexpected.The fish was fresh and tasty and the chips the same. I really enjoyed my visit and it set me up for the rest of my shopping trip.

Sausage and chips - barely warm, obviously cooked ages ago and re-fried at least twice. Not fresh, crispy and hard.Place has gone downhill since new owners.Piles of rubbish at one end of the customers ordering area - makes you wonder about hygiene elsewhere.Been loads previously. Never again.

Don't go by appearances. This dowdy looking chippy serves some of the best fish 'n chips in the country - it's official, they have the certificates hung on the walls. I've visited this establishment many times over the last 30 years and I've never been disappointed. they've extended the menu options, from what I remember, and now offer several vegetarian options. If you're in Hull it's well worth going out of your way for.

I’ve been coming here for years and basically it was a good old fish n chip takeaway with cafe above. Nothing more, nothing Less. The fish n chips were what they were and although no frills attached- plonked in a plate, bread and butter and a pot of tea were excellent. A good full plate that always looked mouth watering. Service was quick and two mints attached to the bill at the end. However .... I went in there last week and found a bit of an upgrade in presentation and style. Not sure I liked it! There’s a new shiny black sign outside so something had changed. I went upstairs and sat at my favourite table next to the window. All good so far! The waitress came over and took our orders which were the usual. The bread and butter came immediately and condiments brought over in a little tray (that’s new) then the tea came. But we had to wait a long time for our fish n chips and had already eaten our bread whilst waiting. The fish was slightly burnt and the scabby chips (I would call them) came in a little wire basket (WHY?) and the peas in a separate dish. I know this style of presentation is ‘the thing’ but come on - let’s just stick to a good old traditional fish n chip cafe and let the food do the talking. They’re a dying breed! I left disappointed and even more disappointed to find only one mint when there was two of us! It’s the little things ....

Interesting to visit again looking forward to it. Sadly we should just of gone for a sandwich elsewhere. The first dish was a plate of chips, they were rather scrappy and more like those you would get warmed up after the night before.

Traditional fish and chips cooked how they should be. The service was excellent and the staff polite.

Chips were black inside and out, curry tasted of flour I couldn’t eat it. The young girls that waitressing were polite and friendly. I did complain regarding my order and did not have to pay for my meal which I am grateful for. My children and partner all left there meals also. Please go to the ocean bar or steels in cleethorpes to see how food should be brought out. Please check out my photo of my chips.

Visited for fish & chips, not very enjoyable at all, been here many times before and enjoyed fish & chips! Today it went in the bin, fish was grey,not freshly fried, chip's soggy and tasteless! No were near the standard of their usual enjoyable fish & chip's. Will NOT be returning in the future, total waste of money.

We were out for the day in Hull for shopping and a visit to The Deep and went in this fish and chip restaurant because it was in a convenient location for the shops. We were very pleased to see that this restaurant served smaller meals for lighter appetites, my daughter and I ordered a smaller fish cake, chips and peas and my husband had the smaller fish, chips and peas. Beans are served as an alternative to peas. The portions were still generous and we thought they were good value for money and delicious. The staff were friendly and the meal was served quickly and the restaurant was clean. My only negative was we thought the drinks were quite expensive. But I would recommend this restaurant and would return if I am visiting Hull.

We have been visiting family in Hull - as we now live abroad, one of the things we miss most is "Fish n Chips" - however this was one of the worst meals I have ever had - both the fish and the chips were so dreadfull over cooked and dried out - mushy peas had a strange taste - the service of the food was so quick but the fish had clearly been in the hot cabinet for a long long long time - I would rather wait for fish freshly cooked food than be served food in that condition - unlikely I will return

Die Sauberkeit im Restaurant lässt zu Wünschen übrig. Wer schnell und fettig essen will, ist hier genau richtig. Die Pommes schmeckten wie aufgewärmt und der Fisch war lecker. Ich würde dieses Restaurant nicht noch einmal besuchen.

Not many chip shops are suitable for vegetarians (I don't actually know any others in hull?) The food is really nice. The restaurant upstairs is very dated, but I don't mind that. The staff were really helpful and nice. Proper traditional squishy chips, just how I like them. 7 of us ate there and everyone enjoyed the food. Only disappointment is they shut at 5.30 which seems a bit early.

Went to Hull for the first time. Had Fish chips peas two slices of bread and butter and a pot of tea. Wife had scampi chips and peas and a cup of coffee. Big meal which we could not finish. Lovely fish , and nice scampi. Excellent value for money total bill £17.25. Old fashioned but I like it. Waitress very friendly, that will do for me.

The fish and chips were a little greasy. I have had much better. The portions however are a good size and reasonably priced. The restaurant upstairs is a little basic and could have been a little cleaner. There is also a seating area outside the restaurant.

Visited today as take away customer only. I was so pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome and helpful friendly service. Thank you. I ate outside on some lovely metal patio tables and chairs. A lovely early lunchtime break. Food was freshly cooked and good quality. Very resonable prices for city centre.

My wife and I went into the restaurant section of the Goldenfry with our two grandchildren both 41/2 years old (twins) on the 1st September 2017 and asked the waitress for fish fingers and chips for them. She told us that they only served fish fingers as a take away but would ask if it could be done here in the restaurant. She appeared back almost immediately and told us she had been informed they had finished taking orders for the day!

Disgusted with reception received at this establishment. Arrived with two small children. Told we could not order fish fingers in upstairs restaurant, only downstairs in takeaway. Then told no more orders were being taken for upstairs! This was at 3pm! No sign to tell us this as we arrived. This was the start of the Freedom Festival weekend in the City of Culture. Not a good ambassador for the City. Bob Carver's fish and chips place much better and a lot more friendly.

I have had fish and chips from here over the years and its been hit and miss not only the food but the service as well. But on this occasion the food was good i had a nice piece of fish and the batter wasn't greasy like you get in some places, It was very filling. The prices aren't that bad neither i like that you get meal deals.

Me and my boyfriend visited goldenfry for our lunch the other day and what can i say, it was absolutely gorgeous! Best fish and chip shop i have been to in a long while. The fish is perfect, chips are great and the gravy is to die for. Also my boyfriend ordered the one of the many vegetarian options, he chose the quorn buttie, it was gorgeous, it tasted great, It even tasted a like the real thing, which is good if you are like my boyfriend who is vegetarian but misses the taste of meat. Also the staff are very friendly and helpful, and always have a smile on their face! I was served quickly and food was hot when it got to me, not greasy at all! Everything is all reasonably priced and nothing is too expensive, it's ALL worth the money, as it's perfect here. I will definitely be returning and very much looking forward to it!

This place is tired, very tired! I usually grab takeaway from here but decided to sit in for a change. The restaurant is upstairs and the full place needs a lick of paint. It wasn't very clean on the day I visited either, the condiment storage was filthy at every table, the photo included was at our table, dirt under the plastic table covers, stained walls. The surfaces however were clean and tables were cleared, cleaned down really quickly and the food itself was lovely as always, decent portions too. We went for the haddock special at £14 for two meals. It's a real shame about the restaurant because the food is lovely.

Myself and my daughter went today and I cannot fault the food or the service! Poor waitress was flying solo in a packed upstairs. She didnt stop and was so polite to everyone. The place desperately needs a fresh lick of paint and the loos needing urgent attention but that aside the food was fab! It was as good as i have tried in the area and have recently been to the "up market" fish and chips place. I would recommend this place to anyone!!

Came here tonight (5th Jan) and I have to say a real well done to the staff the queue was really long and fair enough it did take a while to get served but the staff were working as fast as possible. The fish and chips were lovely I would definitely recommend to other people. Hope you have great success for the rest of the city of culture year.

Called in for a bag of chips and curry sauce along with a cheese savory.The staff were very busy and a happy bunch which I really like in the customer service side of it.The downfall was the cheese savory, it must of just come out of the pan because when I bit into it...well loads of bubbly fat fell out wow!! And it was soggy :(However the chips and curry sauce were nice and my partner enjoyed his 2 buttys that he ordered so no complaints there.Thanks guys.

Goldendey is on great city centre location. Restaurant and take away. Restaurant rather cramped. Friendly staff. Fish and chips were fine. Nothing special. Reasonable prices.

Used this place a lot but not so much recently. The size of the fish has really gone down and the amount of chips increased. Staff are friendly and efficient. They operate a discount scheme.

Popped into Goldenfrys restaurant first impression was that it was clean and tidy also the welcome was very nice. Ordered fish and chips three times it came to us pipping hot and was absolutely amazing. Price was very good overall a lovely experience.

Not very welcoming staff & generally poor service.FnC's isn't hard, but nether were piping hot, one of our curry sauces had been replaced with mushy peas & all sauces were luke warm. I'm still not convinced we paid the right amount but the two young girls were more concerned about closing up than serving the final half a dozen efficiently.Note: Staff in the background swearing & talking about what their getting up to that night isn't what you really want as a customer.

Dining area is upstairs and rather small and cramped. The food is good and makes for a nice Lunch while shopping.

Visiting Hull recently we wanted to experience the Yorkshire Fish and Chip tradition,as we won`t eat in Bob Carvers`s anymore after 60 years of constant support.We thought we`d give here a try,good choice it was superb.

Il locale è molto, molto spartano ma proprio nel cuore della cittadina. Quasi quasi, dopo entrato vorresti uscire, poi se butti l'occhio nei piatti decidi di rimanere. Molto spesso l'aspetto inganna. Abbiamo mangiato un ottimo fish ed altrettanto ottime patate fritte, altri hanno preso omelette al formaggio o ai funghi, ottime anche queste. Unico problema non servono birra, mi sono dovuto accontentare di una coca. Molto conveniente il conto, 30 £ per 4 persone. Consigliato

To be honest wasn't expecting much there were two guys rushing around like mad but obviously knew what they were doing because the place was packed with the cbbc event going on.The food was flying out and was fresh you could see the quality was there and the taste was as good ad it gets. All 8 of us were left with the same comments as each other ' beautiful' well done guys. I think the place if I was honest looked a little dated by the it wouldn't put me off coming here on our next visit

The food here is beautiful and I couldn't fault it. The staff are very organised and make you feel extremely welcome. Cannot fault them one part and enjoyed it immensely.

Although the staff, pleasant young lady did her best and i have no complaints regarding her at all, the food was poor. Chips greasy, patties tastless. The customers are crammed in and when we visited very noisy children whose parents made no attempt to quiteten It was like eating in a zoo ! Will we return, never. Horrible customers, poor food with overworked staff. Rubbish food.

Went here today and I can't describe how poor it was.The chips were discustingly greasy,raw and had black bits on!As I ate them I could taste what I described as a stoney grit in every bite,The gravy was also tasteless...its a shame really as this used to be really nice many years ago.THIS NEEDS MASSIVE IMPROVEMENTS ESPECIALLY WITH THE CITY OF CULTURE JUST AROUND THE CORNER!!!

We went there on friday for lunch and i must say it was complete rubbish the chips was still hard and had lots of black bits still on the chips plus there was under cooked,we ended up putting them in the bin a complete waste of money avoid at all cost thanks

Thought we would get fish chips and eat them in queens gardens been a nice day,they were the worst fish n chips I have ever had we threw away more than eat,very expensive for a sprat size haddock! Definitely won't recommend or go again!

Sadly this was a terrible take away meal. I walked in and I should of followed my instincts, the shop had one other customer yet the counter had built up salt and grease which hadn't happened in the last 5 minutes.The fish was smothered in thick batter which was under cooked and slimey on the fish but a little crispy on the outside. After leaving some of the meal and driving off I noticed a fish smell on my hands and when I returned to the car (having eaten in the car) there was a very fishy smell.The chips were cooked but very greasy.The peas were tasteless.I'm sorry to say that the best thing about the meal was the chilled tin of fanta!

...Luv this little chippy...in the middle of city centre...curry 'n' chips to die, for plus all other products on sale are fresh fried...lovelyfish,mouthwatering pies plus fish-cakes,sausages and the famous pattie only Hull 'chippys can do...oh and a restaurant area upstairs...but ther's nowt like eating your curry 'n' chips on the street seats,in a winter...

I just bought my lunch here. It was very very poor. The fish was freshly made and nice but the chips and peas were horrendous. The place in hindsight needs a clean.

Visited Hull on a shopping Excursion,Around Lunchtime we found the Goldenfry(Fish & Chip) resteraunt. We ordered Large Fish & Chip Special which was Indeed Large.Very Nice batter on Fish nice Brown Chips. Realy enjoyed the meal

this is just based on my most recent visit, asked for a fishcake butty, the butty bread had a thick line of dust on the top that was very noticeable, the lady was about to take my money not noticing the line of dirt on the bread, I asked for a clean one and paid, wish I had of asked for my money back as she reached into the same place for the next, the fishcake tasted like it has never seen a fish, it wasn't very nice, for the price I didn't go back to complain plus didn't have time, I will not go there again.

Arrived in Hull on a rail tour from the South East. Had only an hour or so for something to eat and being on the coast and as an antidote to turkey we opted for fish and chips and spotted Goldenfry while walking around the surprisingly nice city centre. Initially we didn't think they did sit-down but spotted a staircase to the left of the chip shop. Very typical fish and chip restaurant decor - wouldn't look out of place in the 70's, but the staff were great as was the fish, chips and peas. Particularly the latter, which were not soggy - nice and thick, just the way I like them. Pretty good value for £7.

the food was ok but as soon as we sat down staff was staring at us to hurry up and get out as a que had formed down the stairs felt very uneasy and rushed will get takeaway next time

I have been to the take away for years now. Fast efficient service, food always hot. Good prices. Sometimes they have 'Specials' and they are worth trying if you fancy something different.Took my family to the restaurant upstairs. Nice menu and again fast service. Everybody was impressed. Lovely big fish, golden plump chips. Nice battered sausages and pork fritters - these are 'Spam' fritters, but they are not allowed to used the name 'Spam' any more! Different name, still as tasty as it was before. Curry was lovely too. And then there's the gravy!!! The gravy is out of this world. So tasty, it has mushrooms and onions in it which makes it quite rich and perfect for your chips. You have to try it! We got drinks, kids got hot chocolate, we got tea and coffee and a couple of cold drinks. Nice to relax for an hour. The bill was very reasonable too. Great place to go if you want good food and don't want to spend too much money.

This is a lovely little place in Savile Street, restaurant on the 1st floor. The service was good, good quality food, plenty of chips and clean little restaurant. Was given an individually wrapped mint with the bill part way through my meal - a nice touch. With the pensioner's special you get a free pot of tea! Well worth a return visit.

We visited on a Saturday at 1.00pm. The restaurant was busy but not full. I ordered cod which judging by the wait was not the normal. When it arrived it was hot with the batter perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, the flesh was watery and fairly tasteless. It was also on the skin. The amount of chips wasn't over generous with a large proportion of small bits. I would visit again but this time to try the haddock.

I used to go here regularly but stopped because the manageress then was very hostile and used to shout and be rude about customers.I returned today after some 15 months and she was not there, hopefully left. The staff today were very welcoming, food was delicious and was served very quickly. It is a great restaurant and highly recommended.I will be back!!

Me and my boyfriend went on take out and he ordered fish and chips i got chips and gravy and it was absolutely awful the chips were hard and the gravy was like watered down from god knows how long ago... im just glad i didnt go upstairs to the restaurant and pay more for something this bad.. il stick to bob carvers in the future they know how to batter a good bit of fish and there gravy is to die for

wanting a bit of lunch after visiting hull shops.we smelt chips, found the goldenfry.went into sit in the warmth [Hull was very cold] .Found they did a pensioners special, for £4.50. Tea or coffee , small fish chips and peas or beans. This was fine and price was reduced by filling in a form for regular diners. A good deal all round.

I have been to this fish and chip shop many times over the years it has always been a good meal there also it has been at good value for money I can never argue about the quality of the food there from just a portion of chips to fish and chips it is always some were to go if you need something to eat on the go or you can enjoy it out on a summers day on the seats out side the shop the service is very nice it is located in a very good place near the hull fc shop in the centre of town I would advice people to get the fish and chips they are very nice to eat for dinner and then you can go on doing you business before you had your dinner there also there is an up stairs part you can go to as well if you want to get some thing to eat it is up to you what you want to do best place to get some thing on the go or you can take your time and go up stairs and have some thing instead best fish and chip shop ever been to.

I called in to the chip shop today...because there was a queue...which is a good sign of quality. I decided after queing for a few minutes that I might fair better in the restaurant.So I went upstairs, greeted by wonderful staff. Offered a choice of tables to sit at; and then offered the menu.The choice was good and I couldn't resist the cod, chips , mushy peas and a pot of tea to wash it down.I sat and waited, saw other visitors food coming out and it looked devine.You know that if you have to wait for the food it will be goodThe food arrived, fish in a light crispy batter complete with lemon slice, generous portion of chips and mushy peas.The best fish and chips I have tasted for along time..everything tasted so fresh.The lemon came in handy too...once I had squeezed the juice on my fish, the slice went in the tea to add flavourGreat value for money and I shall be going back in few weeks...as I'm working in Hull frequently

we went to the resturant on friday 14/9/12 was met by a very happy and jovial waitress even though she was cold my wife orderd the cod i had the haddock a short wait for it to come but well worth the wait huge portions the fish was just heaven the batter was crispy and dry with no doughy bits delicious served piping hot chips was plenty full and hot a perfect meal had to have the curry sauce and gravy to share on the saturday just had the cod which was just beautiful from the take away yet again cooked to perfection just wished we have had scraps with it because it has to be one of the best batters we have had THANK YOU GOLDENFRY YOU SERVE GREAT FOOD

Typical Fish n Chip establishment in a convenient location.Pricing fair, portions not bad, but thats about it!
