Golden Willow Chinese Restaurant in Horsham

We have been visiting this restaurant for years. Under new management now but still with some of the previous staff. The menu has changed and some of our previous favourites absent. We were impressed they, after ordering the squid, we had an apology from the chef that he wasn’t happy with the quality that day and suggested something else. A Very honest approach and much appreciated. Sesame prawn toast good. Prawn with black bean sauce not as flavourful as before. However the new sizzling and very hot chili beef dish , recommended to us, was outstanding. Generous portion and beef not too thinly sliced. Tender too. Will definitely try the sambol next time as also highly recommended. The Bill was reasonable and included a very good bottle of Macon wine.. Also the coffee offerings have improved and decent cappuccino. One personal negative. No more linen napkins. I think when dining in a nice restaurant paper napkins make it feel A bit cheap. Bjt that is just me WJ g fussy. We will definitely be back.

We had a takeaway from the restaurant - our first since the change of management. We were not regulars before and it was our hope that the change would be a positive one. Regretfully this was not to be. The chicken and sweetcorn soup fell short of our expectations with no nice pieces of chicken, but if you like minced chicken then it would be OK. The squid was way too much batter and was just not nice. I enjoyed the spring rolls and the prawn toast was OK too. However the spare ribs were awful and had no sauce - is this normal for a mixed starter? I ask because we ordered from the menu which said that they were bbq spare ribs and I could see nothing that warranted the description bbq in what we received. The chicken stay was somewhat lacking in flavour and tasted more like chicken with chopped peanuts. Strangely our takeaway included the chopped spring onions and cucumber that you get with duck pancakes, but I have no idea why. It didn’t go with anything that we ordered. Needless to say we will not be returning, which is a pity because I do like to support local businesses.

This is a lovely restaurant. It has a friendly atmosphere. The service is prompt. The food is freshly cooked & delicious. The portion sizes are generous, so you certainly won't leave hungry. I struggled to finish mine! Well worth a visit.

A nice restaurant, food was authentic & tasty. Really friendly service . Menu is comprehensive Chinese favourite dishes as well as some regional & Malaydisn & Thai favourites.

Went for the lovely Sunday buffet, great value for money and still the A1 quality food. Heard they now have new management, so lets see how that works out.

Do not go here if you are with children. The staff were so rude and made us feel like such a burden for being there. It was a birthday meal for my little brother and it completely ruined the evening. Once we got our drinks we paid and walked out, you couldn’t have paid me to stay and have our meal there! Will never be returning

If you change your phone number you really need to put it on website! No response by phone so had to drive down and order takeaway for later. Went back to collect at alloted time and 30 mins delay. Food mediocre and duck very greasy. Not a good start as I am told it's a new management. I will give the benefit of the doubt and not go too much into the food at this time.

Came to this extremely tired premises hoping to have some good Chinese food. Unfortunately the duck was completely dry and overcooked, everything else was average at best. Water was coming into the restaurant whilst we were eating and carpets in the dining room and lino in the bathroom were sticky underfoot. No problems with the service. The position is lovely and with some TLC this could be a real go-to place. DIsappointed and will not go again.

My wife and I have visited this several times and normally it’s a 5 star restaurant however we visited on the 22nd December for pre Xmas dinner- disappointed comes to mind- we opted for the set menu- the duck was dry- the food had an overwhelming taste of vinegar- the coke was flat- the main food didn’t come all together- the egg fried rice had no egg (they seemed knocky when we asked for egg to be put in and reheated the rice when doing this) the service was slow and they seemed more interested in the takeaway service than the customers who came in- I’m guessing that’s why the restaurant was empty last night. Gutted as we traveled to this restaurant as it’s not close by- back to our local I guess who never fail and put all their customers first

I have to give this restaurant 5*****. Without doubt the best Chinese food around here. Just wish the staff knew how to smile instead of the unwelcoming, can’t be bothered approach.

Having visited back in Oct 2022 and gave 5* then, today it was our 49th wedding anniversary, so we had to revisit. As before, very welcoming, friendly, attentive, food was fast, fresh and hot and fantastic. Absolute enjoyable evening. Is always on our shortlisted restaurants to revisit. Well done.

Nice dishes, if a little on the bland side. Drinks were quickly arranged on arrival. However, afterwards the service was painfully slow despite only 2 or 3 groups in the entire restaurant. The staff looked bored. Good location, although rather forgettable overall.

Mandy & the team at The Golden Willow are so helpful, friendly & welcoming. Since taking over from the previous owner a few years ago, they have improved so much about the restaurant. The food is always fresh & the service is great, whether you're eating in or taking away. It's a brilliant, family run restaurant & I'm lucky to have it so close to my doorstep.

AWFUL TAKEAWAY DO NOT ORDER!!!! Food came cold. 30 pounds for two chips and one side and none of the food was even cooked. Would never order again.

Disappointing. Haven’t visited here for a while & previously found it fine. Today was really disappointing, restaurant was cold, staff scruffy, food was poor, service was almost nonexistent. It seems to have gone downhill considerably, very few customers so perhaps the decline has been gradual but obviously noticeable.

Having now moved into the Worthing area, this restaurant has been on the the list of revisits, having visited a few years ago. Not at al, disappointed, the people, service & food are all excellent. Turned up without making a booking and was accommodated without any fuss. Food is excellent and worth visit. 5 star

We turned up without a booking on a Sunday evening at about 6pm and were promptly seated. It was a little chilly sitting in the conservatory area with the doors open so we had them closed. It would be great in the sun. We ordered beef with bean shoots and mushrooms, crispy roast duck Cantonese style, lamb with ginger and spring onions, seasonal vegetables and shredded duck fried rice. The portions were more generous than expected so we could have ordered less, but the food was good. Service was a little sticky - probably due to our lack of speaking Mandarin - but it was OK.

We visited Golden Willow for the first time tonight for an impromptu meal out locally. I have to say we were very pleased with our experience. We opted for the set Menu A for 3 people. The service was excellent and the food was plentiful - we particularly enjoyed the sizzling beef main course and the vegetables were fresh and cooked perfectly! We will definitely book again.

Went with a male friend, arrived on time were greeted by a friendly waiter who showed us to the table they had reserved for us, but then he changed his mind and tried to seat us in a far corner? We politely refused since there was no need for us to move as there was only one large party and one other table in the entire restaurant when we arrived at 8pm on a Thursday and this was the table they had reserved for us...everything went down hill from then. We ordered a bottle of wine, which we knew from past experience was very nice. Wine poured, then rushed to order food by two separate staff members within minutes - not even time to get comfortable or even look at the menu! Fair enough if the restaurant was busy, but it wasn't and we felt like they wanted us gone as soon as possible. The waitress who bought the food was rude, arrogant and practically threw it onto the table with a grunt. Prawn Toast, Pancake Rolls and Curry Puffs all arrived in mere minutes of being ordered - blisteringly hot on the inside and cold on the outside, we are certain they had just been microwaved, the chicken satay was so overcooked if you'd thrown it at the window it would of smashed and swimming in sauce that looked like it had just been poured on with no regard. The satay went back to the kitchen as it was inedible (again taken with attitude), we persevered with the other appetisers. Rude waitress came back half way through our appetisers "you done" is the only conversation we got from her as she tried to clear plates while we were still eating, had to wrestle some food back from her and that's where our evening ended abruptly. We didn't bother to order anything else and simply paid the bill, were watched but not acknowledged as we left - was it because we were two men having dinner together? You'd like to think not but certainly felt unwelcome during our brief stay.

We have just enjoyed one of the nicest Chinese meals we have eaten. We had Set menu C for two people and really enjoyed the variety of dishes. Everything came out hot and was extremely tasty. The service excellent and very welcoming. We hope to go again sometime in the near future.

We booked a table for 6 on Tuesday, the welcome by the staff was great really friendly. The place started getting busy so good job we booked, food was amazing really tasty and fresh and the waiter had great fun showing the kids how to make the fancy napkins look pretty ! More than happy to return

I have been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years I have brought large groups in and also come with one other person or alone I had previously always been treated with respect and going the service great More recently I haven't had money for luxuries but saved up to take myself out to lunch last week What a disappointment The restaurant was under new management and the service and quality of the food reflected that Worst of all after I had finished and paid for my meal I was told I was no longer welcome as a solo diner What was supposed to be a treat ended up being a humiliation

Super tasty Chinese restaurant, excellent service and lovely setting by the duck pond. Food was delicious - not your average Chinese.

Been using this restaurant since it’s first opened 20 years ago. Tonight we had the worst yet. Definitely gone down hill since it was sold a year ago. Our Yan Chow fried rice had slithers of pure pork fat in it and was wet and sloppy. The crispy shredded beef with chilli wasn’t crisp and had little if any chilli. The chicken in the chicken in hot yellow bean sauce with cashew nuts had the texture and appearance of processed chicken. None of our food seemed like it had actually been prepared professionally, but rather could easily been out of bags of frozen pre-prepared food. It’s not cheap and we have come to expect a much better meal than average take away. Won’t be using again until we hear that things have improved significantly.

Ordered a takeaway for collection early on during the shutdown. Rather haphazard and disorganised collection process where I suspect they did not understand the gravity of the Virus but were being forced to put in place new procedures to allow them to stay open. In any event the take away was average to poor quality food so given this we won’t rush to place another order.

We had a evening with 12 family members tonight and it was a lovely evening. We can’t fault how friendly the staff were. We weren’t late, about 10.15 but after other people had left and never felt like they wished we’d hurry up. The food was lovely too.

Went in on Valentine's Day to get a takeaway. Sweet and sour chicken etc The last couple of times the sweet and sour chicken didn't have much sauce. This time it was non-existent very disappointed As the prices went up a few weeks ago. you now get less sauce. See photo.

We had NYE here with friends and family and Mandy and her team looked after us really well. The food is excellent and we often order for take away too.

We have eaten in and had takeaway now from this restaurant and both were delicious. My daughter has coeliac disease, and a soya intolerance, so finding a Chinese restaurant that will willingly cater for both of these needs has been nigh on impossible. Staff at the Golden Willie were helpful and knowledgeable, meaning we we could enjoy a Chinese meal as a family without the usual stress involved in going out for a meal and trying to navigate the gluten free minefield! Definitely recommended!

Traveled up from Devon for a family birthday. Came here for dinner, not our first visit and we weren't disappointed, as always it was faultless. Food and service A1. Staff very friendly and welcoming. We will be back soon.

Took the family for lunch. Instead of ordering off the menu we chose to have the all-you-can-eat lunch special. I ordered 5 starters (for the whole family). The waitress then asked what everyone else wanted! Starters took a little while to arrive, but a bottle of (free) water was provided. The large plate of starters then arrived and pretty soon stood empty.Next was the quarter crispy duck. Plenty of pancakes were provided, but we still could tuck into the duck once the pancakes had finished. The main courses (3 dishes plus rice) arrived very quickly. We were then asked if we wanted any more or to try something different.At this point we did feel rather neglected as with a pile of empty, but dirty dishes on our table it seemed difficult to get anybodies attention (only one other table: with 6 people were also in the restaurant). Finally we manged to get their attention and dessert was provided. When requested the bill was prompt coming and paid for (service element already included). The food was of a high standard, though the main dishes were relatively small: order at least one dish per person and plenty of rice.Stand out item was the honey and garlic ribs: wonderful.

We normally get a take away but had a family birthday meal and had the lunchtime buffet deal. The food was exceptional, you choose from the menu want you want to eat and it’s all freshly prepared for you. Ribs where awesome!

Visited on Sunday expecting the buffet, they have changed to an ‘all you can eat’ menu for a set price. Service was very good and the food was excellent, hot and fresh. Will definitely return but think we will need to book as I’m sure it will prove popular if they maintain the standards.

We booked a table for 3 for my son's 20th birthday meal. Staff was quite friendly and attentive. My husband's lamb Chinese style curry was very chewy so it was replaced by Prawn instead. I had Sizzling Seafood Delight there was only very few seafood around 5 pieces and the rest were onions. Restaurant was clean and tidy.

Booked table foolishly not thinking it would be a Sunday buffet lunch. Arrived on time 13:30, seated and staff not friendly, food warm and not much choice. The typical early hyenas had scoffed the best bits maybe. After about 30 minutes and 2 very small plates of food the staff began clearing tables ready for the evening. It became obvious that the lunch time slot had come to a close, food being cleared away from the serving table. Except that is, staff taking food out to the remaining hyenas in the garden - very cliquey. At 14:20 we left somewhat bemused and still hungry.

Excellent service, attentive without being oppressive, clean tidy restaurant, nice atmosphere, starters of ribs, prawn toast etc was unsurpassable, main meals were not huge which was nice, a perfectly decent portion size, everything was serviced beautifully and was freshly cooked, desserts excellent and the whole experience was wonderful.

Our second time here, so lovely! We ordered a takeaway and the food comes in the foil trays with clear lids; a good idea & looks professional, then a cardboard carry box with handles to easily takeaway! Good impressions even before we start eating. The food tastes so clean and fresh, and hardly any grease at all! The tempura veg is unbelievable, vegetable curry coconut sauce a compliment, and the vege noodles fresh. It’s all lovely. Chips can be a little dry, but prefer this than greasy. The only quibble I have is that the curry sauce is too hot. Please try to rectify this...love curry sauce & rice or chips.

Really surprised at the beautiful interior, looks nothing from the outside but stunning view overlooking the Storrington Memorial Pond. Excellent choice of menu catering for all tastes. Very friendly helpful staff. We ordered the set menu for 4 of us whilst the 5th person had a la carte. So much beautiful tasty food. Couldn't fault any of it. Great service would thoroughly recommend.

My husband and I have enjoyed the set lunch at this local restaurant on three occasions the last 2 years and each time we have had very tasty and freshly cooked set banquet food. The service is very good too.

Take away so can't comment on the ambience but the staff were polite and friendly. The main meals were tasty so no issues on that score. The side orders of chips were really not nice and went in the bin. Imagine economy oven chips cooked, left to go cold and then reheated in a microwave......unpleasant and £3.20 a portion. Get on top of good chips or don't serve them i say. A shame as would have been a 4 or 5 star otherwise.

We were staying nearby and looking for somewhere to eat on a Sunday evening, as every pub we had been recommended to was closed we came across the Golden Willow.

We were a group of 7, probably too loud, friends who enjoyed a magnificent dinner with good service. No problem getting seperate bills. Prices quite okey on the individual dishes but as always I would dtay clear of the Set Menus - Know what You would like and order it. Better and better value.

Took my wife here to celebrate our anniversary Food was lovely service was first class and was not rushed highly recommended

Evening meal with starters and main. Soup and tempura veg both good. Followed by crispy noodles and bwancurd plus brocoli and rice. All fine and exactly as you would expect in a High Street Chinese. Service reasonable.

We often get take aways from the Golden Willow and occasionally eat in. Personally, I think it’s the best Chinese around. They offer a wide range of dishes on their menu and it’s priced fairly for the quality of the food. I would definitely recommend!

The food is good l, it won’t blow your sock off with its diversity or quantity. Good average Chinese food.

We used to go regularly some years ago but stopped going after finding errors on our bills. We’ve occasionally had takeaways and these have been reasonable but nothing special.

We have only had takeaway Chinese from here, but cannot fault the service and friendliness of the place. In fact we think it is the best Chinese around. Yes it is not cheap but at the end of the day you get what you pay for and if you want good Chinese food then this is the place to go.

Sorry to say, this was a very ordinary Chinese takeaway at over inflated prices! Quality of food was OK but would not bother to return.

Four of us had dinner here recently. The restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. The menu contains a typical range of Chinese restaurant dishes. Everything we chose was nicely presented and tasted absolutely delicious. Service was attentive. Worth a visit.

My partner and I went here to the all-you-can-eat Sunday buffet for the first time today, having had excellent takeaway before from this establishment. We arrived at 1.30pm, when the buffet stopped at 2pm, but were abruptly told we would need to be out by 2.30pm. We were shown to our table but not given any instructions or offered a drink so we asked whether we could go straight up to the buffet and they said yes. There were only tiny side plates on the table. I put some rice on my plate but after looking at the other options available on the buffet noticed that none were vegetarian. I asked a member of staff if there was a vegetarian option on the buffet and she pointed to the rice. I then asked if that was all they had and she said rice and a spring roll. She then walked off! I then asked another member of staff again if there was a vegetarian option and she said the crab?! I said no, that's not vegetarian and said it wasn't worth me getting the buffet if all that I could eat was rice so could they do a vegetarian stir-fry to go with it? She said no, so I said could I order off the a-la-carte menu, to which she seemed reluctant and annoyed but said she would bring a menu over. I took my tiny plate of rice back to the table but when she came over with a menu she told me that if I ate the rice she would charge me the full buffet price for the rice alone (14.90)! So I said that I would give my partner (who eats meat and had got a plate of the meat options) the rice and would not get anything from the buffet. I was horrified that she would charge me £14.90 for rice?! She said I was not allowed to eat anything from the buffet and so I ordered a couple of items from the a-la-carte menu, which were slimy and tasteless. The service throughout was terrible - nobody apologised for the inconvenience, they were slow bringing us things like drinks and menus even though there were only 2 other tables of customers there and yet they seemed impatient to be rid of us. I felt really quite upset and angry at how I had been treated. I have been vegetarian for more than 20 years and have never been treated with such disrespect and rudeness or spoken to so abruptly with no compassion. The kick in the teeth was that they then added a 10% service charge onto our bill, which did not say optional so implied it was compulsory, which we hadn't seen mentioned anywhere, and there was only 2 of us?! The food is already grossly overpriced for what it is (which is poor to average) and much more expensive than other places in the area. If my partner hadn't already started eating his buffet meal, I would have walked out as soon as they were so dismissive and unhelpful about my being vegetarian (hardly rare in this day and age!) as I didn't want to eat there after that. There is no excuse for such awful service. I will never go there again.

Never had a bad dish from this place whether it's eating in or taking away. Staff are always polite and attentive. Shame they don't do a delivery service!

Well what can I say, it looks the part but I’m afraid the food was just average with no wow factor at all for myself of family

Lovely table by the window. Looking out over the duck pond. Staff lovely. However I ordered chicken with mushrooms and it was totally undercooked. Could not eat it. They took it back, reheated or cooked it more but the damage was done. I will go back, but not for the chicken.

Sunday lunchtime all-you-can-eat at the Golden Willow has been a firm family favourite for years now.

Meal was served quite quickly. Food was warm and average in taste for me. Portion was okay. There is no atmosphere in the restaurant.

Another lovely evening - with great food, we have a Bed & Breakfast place and it is the only Chinese Restarant I would recommend it to our clients as it is consistently good. Thank you everyone for a lovely evening yours Jacky & Greville

Lovely place to eat anytime,just been for Sunday Buffet Lunch,great selection of food,very tasty,highly recommend.

Overall we enjoyed a pleasant evening here, but the evening was a little spoiled, when having some crispy duck left over, we asked for extra Chinese pancakes and were advised we couldn't as there was a 3 pancake limit per person. This seemed a little mean and has put us off returning.

Poor Hygiene rating, scruffy looking staff, and slimy looking food are not things that encourage my patronage.

Thoroughly enjoyed our evening as part of a large party here. Food was excellent, staff friendly and efficient. A very good evening for Chinese New Year complete with s Dragon dancer!

On the 24th February I was responsible for a private fund raising function which provided food, welcome drinks and entertainment to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Guests had to pay for their own drinks which like any restaurant bill incurred a service charge element. The evening was very successful and the food so brilliant that I have just returned to the restaurant for another visit. Sadly I cannot concur with the previous reviewer who has not understood the principle that wine is part of the bill. Likewise I certainly cannot concur with his review of the food, which is not only brilliant but represents good value for money. Please note my 5 star rating and do NOT be put off by the one star review.

I attended a function recently when the whole restaurant was taken over, there was a set menu, and drinks were extra. My wife and I ordered an £18.00 bottle of wine, handed over a twenty pound note and were shocked to receive 0.20p back, when I queried the mistake I was told it was a 10% service charge, which I had to pay.

Another excellent meal on New Year's Eve. Lovely food efficient friendly service. A Golden Willow meal is our number 1 treat

We went for Sunday Buffet and the food and service was excellent. THe choice of food was standard but beautifully cooked and hot.

Have been here twice and both times have been exceptional, the staff are very attentive and make you feel very welcome.

We have always fancied trying this restaurant but as we do not live in the area so we have always put it off. Tuesday night we took a drive over to the golden willow and I was very surprised, the food was amazing, the service was outstanding, we all had a great evening. Will make sure we go again very soon.

Really nice food and very quick coming out really good flavour bit on the pricey side but well worth it

This is a nice traditional style Chinese restaurant, which was both comfortable and airy. Food was of a good standard and the prices reflect this. Only downside is that there is no real parking nearby.

Comimos en un viernes por la noche y a las 7. 30 el restaurante estaba muy lleno, no afectó el servicio, que era muy atento y rápido. La comida estaba bien preparada y de buen tamaño de la porción. Teníamos tres entrantes, un medio pato crujiente, tres platos principales y un plato de fideos y arroz y con un par de cervezas, una copa de vino y una botella de agua y vino a cargo de este servicio alrededor de £33 por cabeza. También hay un buffet en un almuerzo de domingo, que es todo lo que pueda comer y alrededor de 16 libras por cabeza si lo prefiere. Recomiendo este restaurante para una comida relajada.

Visitamos este restaurante regularmente, por ejemplo una vez por dos meses, y nunca ha dejado de recibir un buen servicio y excelente comida de calidad. Solemos comer mucho más de lo que necesitamos, pero siempre se puede llevar a casa el resto! Mejor comida china que he estado.

Good takeaway. All the dishes were edible and not too salty. Third time here and all ok so far. My friends put me onto here as the Chinese in Petworth is grim, really grim.

Ages since we went here but obviously new owners/management and seems better than it was. Certainly we would have shared a starter if we had known how large they were. Had starters then the customary duck pancakes followed by very tasty main courses all washed down with a Chinese beer. Resonable prices too which include 10% gratuity. i don't like a space on the bill for 'tips', having already put a gratuity on. Apart from that niggle a very pleasant meal. One more comment ; it was hot weather but the ceiling fan was blowing high speed draught over us but it took about three requests before they eventually turned the fan off
