Golden Star Chinese in Northumberland

DO NOT EVER GO HERE!!! i got chicken chow main more like chicken chow nail absolutely disgusted had a bite of my noodles to feel something small and hard to spit it out and discover it was a FINGER NAIL. called them up and they LAUGHED and said it was a piece of broken container then from being a bit of container to being a bit of unfried prawn cracker. disgusting!!!!!

Previous reviews here seem to be from quite a while ago, maybe things have changed because our meals were good. I had a mixed sweet and sour - the container of sauce was the largest I've ever had and there was plenty of food with it. The meals come with rice and there was too much in total for me. My wife's mixed chop suey was good and plentiful too.

Went with my ex wife of 10 years (Izzy now 18) to get some quick food before the divorce trial. The Chicken was RAW!!!!!! THIS WAS OUTRAGEOUS! I felt violated that I ate some before finding out. It would be the other way round I do not like being the one getting violated. 0/10 the sauce looked like piss although the raw onions were quite a zesty addition to the plate. Would not recommend.

Sorry to say but this food was terrible. When I have beef in anything I prefer it to be cooked properly, not trying to run around the plate. The rice was OK. The curry sauce was reasonable. But the meat was disgusting. The meal went in the bin. My daughter got chicken satay, her chicken was practically clucking around her plate. There was blood in the veins of the chicken. Her food also went in the bin. Try somewhere else if you want a decent chinese meal.

Just had a order to haven site was the best takeaway we have had in a long time this is the new place to go for use everyone is full and loved it money we'll spent lovely staff can not wait to go back

Wow, probably just had the best Chinese takeaway meal Iv ever had, myself and my 4 boys and my brother staying in the haven holiday park got in late and decided that a takeaway be the best option so had one delivered from the golden star Berwick upon tweed at 10 pm ,, quite a big order as we are all big eaters ,, chicken curry egg fried rice chips, special chop suey boiled rice, satay beef egg fried rice, beef in green peppers and a black bean sauce egg fried rice , 2 spring rolls and sweet n sour chicken balls and a portion of vegetable spring rolls ,,, quite a substantial order, all for £50 and it was delivered to site in 20 mins ( we had to meet at the gate entrance) but abselutly didn’t mind as the end result was 6 totally empty plates food was hot and abselutly delicious, I work all over the uk and have had my fair share of Chinese take outs some good , some not ,but in fairness to golden star one of if not the best Chinese Iv ever had we will definitely be having another one tomorrow and in the future when we return, everybody’s tastes differ I know but for myself and my family truly outstanding little takeaway 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Would just like to say well done to golden star Chinese. Ordered for delivery to haven holiday park and arrived at time we specified , Driver was very polite and food was piping hot and delicious, 5 stars and will definitely have again when back in Berwick 👏👏👏👏

Slated this place few years back after very poor food. I have to say that first time since then food was really decent. Happy to say tonights service and food restored my faith in those that recommended the place. However 70p extra for fried rice along with the price hike on dishes is a bit of a rip off. Back home still only 20 n 30p extra. But give the place a go hopefully you get good food same as us.

Ordered a takeaway from here and was told it was £8.00. I had an old price list at home where the price was £6.20 +40p for fried rice which I decided must be out of date. So when picking up my order I picked up a new price list just to find the prices in the new one were the same as old one. So beware, if you want fried rice with your order it is now 70p extra not 40p and obviously the main meals are up too.

Just had, sweet n sour battered prawns fried rice, hubby had mixed chow mein, 1 portion of curry sauce n bag of prawn crackers £19:60, spot on not greasy, love coming herex never ever been disappointed, glad origional owners are back, as they had stand ins who spoilt it for them, but now it’s fantastic againxxx

Being local i used this takeaway during lockdown. the weekend lockdown was lifted and tourist come come to the area, this takeaway decided locals did not matter. placed an order Saturday might at 7.30 for delivery told it would take 1 hour. after that hour rang and was told it had not left yet and would be another 30 minutes. after another hour 9.30 rang again to be told not left yet very busy with the camp ordered and come an collect it. cancelled order. I will remember this during times when tourist are not in the town. shame on you should have said at 7.30 were too busy. i could have arranged alternative. 3 times they could have said.

Food was ok, nothing to wrote home about, my rice when it eventually arrived after they had the order wrong was a little under cooked. On top of this they then charged me for the rice after agreeing to send it out after giving me chips by mistake, while not saying this on the phone and trying to blame me for ordering wrong. Most expensive Chinese for 1 I've ever had to pay for. Will not be returning.

Ordered a big order for our family while at haven holiday park, picked up food and returned to caravan to find out 4 bags of chips missing. Phoned to ask about this, manager immediately knew it was us and started shouting at my sister saying we haven’t paid for it, we explained we had and she continued to argue back and fourth saying we didn’t order this when we clearly did. Finally told them can we have the chips delivered for free since it wasn’t our fault they forgot which she agreed too. Delivery woman appeared (different lady) and then asked us for £10.50 and we said that we’d been told it was for free. The delivery driver then phoned the manager who told her no that we just pay. She then passed us the phone to discuss this and said we owed more money as the price had went up compared to the menu we had. She continued to argue saying that we must pay when she’d said we’d have it for free as we’d already paid and it was their error. In the end we gave the delivery driver back the chips due to how horrible we had been treated when we had been nothing but nice about the situation. Disgusting attitude and would not recommend!! Poor children were left in tears as they had been really looking forward to this, don’t get a takeaway very often so we’re really looking forward to this. Very upsetting behaviour from a business woman who has a Chinese in a holiday town, would not have expected such disgraceful behaviour towards a paying customer!!!

Never really had a bad meal out of here to be honest maybe the odd one but it's always been my local. Unfortunately after what I found out I will not be returning unless changes are made

the chicken fried rice is one of the best i've ever tasted. not the cleanliest place in the world but makes up for it in the food.

Unfortunately (twice) I ate the food and forgot to take a photo...however, it was really good ! Had sweet n sour chicken in batter and chicken satay fried rice each time. Honestly, loved it - the chicken balls were perfect! Worth going. Our meal was £17 (2 meals, 3 rice .)They only accept cash !

Food was not to bad but I wish they would take better care of the fish tank, makes me thing about how clean or dirty the kitchen is.

Obviously Golden Star has changed hands. Prices have gone UP and so have the standards Gone Down . My meal was wrong when I got home and when I phoned to say an item was missing I was told I hadn’t ordered it. Shame to see the customer service go down the plug hole. So disappointed in the food we had. Won’t be back and I certainly won’t recommend the place to anyone after few years of using the place

I have my worst meal ever in my life, wasted £78 for 5 of us at berwick caravanwe have ordered several dishes, increases on prices and the quality is below zero,dont waste your money horrible food none of us liked what we got never again.

I have always loved the food here, but it has issues. All the dishes are classed as meals, so they come with chips or rice. You can't order several dishes to share with the family without each dish coming with chips or rice, that's pointless, wasteful, and just makes me use other places. I have been eating here for 5 years now, and yes, I've only just got around to writing a review, the outrageous price increases prompted me to do so. Just about every dish has gone up £1.00?, OK I know things increase in price, but to go from £6.20 to £7.20 just for special fried rice is ridiculous.Sorry Golden Star, but after 5 years, you just lost yourself a customer.

Ordered a delivery and although a relatively small order I had to go through it a few times and finally done a recap of everything ordered. When it came there was an entire meal missing which i had paid for so I phoned them only to be faced with an arguement on the phone as they first denied it although I had four of us preseng during the ordering that all gave their request one after another. During the conversation on the phone she actually admitted the missing meal when going through the order so no going back for her after that.She practically put phone down and when driver came back with missing meal he was in a very bad mood and stormed away . After tasting the food I soon wished they had forgot all the meals . Wont be using again.

If i could give this 0 stars i would! went here tonight as a far better chinese (china house) was closed. we got home to realise we were missing a fried rice (no big issue, usually easily rectified) however to then be told they would call us back and didn't. i rang back for the lad in the shop to call me and my partner liars, and accusing us of ordering before and ringing them saying there was no lemon chicken? I'VE NEVER ORDERED LEMON CHICKEN - EVER! he also stated that he checked the camera's in the kitchen (which I'm fairly sure he hasn't got an SIA CCTV license. i will be going to china house after speaking to the owner of both shops, we are regulars with this company and for sure will not be returning. if you want to be called a liar and a bad service then this is the take away for you.

Had a takeaway ... food very, very bland. Plenty of volume but was tasteless. Nothing more to say. Freezing cold, no heating,waiting for the food to appear. Had way, way better.

Actually, this may just be the worst takeaway in Berwick.

There seem to be a mix of reviews for this and other takeaways in Berwick, but our experience was very good. Phoned in an order for 6 people at 7.30pm on Friday 29 December, and half an hour it was ready as promised. Well packaged, hot and all of it was very tasty. Very good value.

we stayed on haggeraton castle holiday park and visited royal garden twice first visit we was offered to use the buffet and fill up a takeaway tub for 5.10 which was a hit as many was taking part this was a sunday evening .also can sit and have a meal if not want a takeaway .second visit we just used the takeaway service food was not bad but have tasted better .but is handy if fancy chinese and dont want to drive off the park .

Durante nuestra reciente estancia en Berwick Holiday Park nos llamó para una entrega a nuestra caravana, nuestra orden fue tomado y fue entregado a unos 25 minutos más tarde. La comida era excelente y los seis de nosotros lo disfrutamos y lo recomendaría a cualquiera que visite la zona de Berwick.

Chose this as staying in a B&B and didn't want to go out. The beef chow mein was inedible with the beef so tough that it must have stewed for days on end. The chicken balls were so greasy and the chicken also mega tough. Needless to say it went in the bin and was left hungry. It was very expensive, slow delivery and very bad food.

Was on holiday at Berwick Holiday Centre and called for a delivery which was more than 3 hours , we had to keep calling and were advised it is next from 1 hour - 3 Hours , be honest we could not eat any food so please do yourselves a favour and don't use this disgusting place and also they don't advise the lengthy delivery which I personally think is a joke ! I wouldn't wait over 3 hours for decent food, would t be so bad if it was edible and not only fit for the Bin !! Absolutely disgusting food and service !!!!!!!! Stay away ...

Take away, food excellent and very varied. Only drawback would not accept card so had to go to hole in the wall at the other end of town. Apart from this however would definitely recommend for a Take Away.

Got a take away from Golden Star delivered to our caravan in Berwick Holiday Park. It was fairly inexpensive and only had a £2 delivery charge. We got curry which was ok, sidt noodles which were quite nice, chips that were terrible (but that seems the norm these days) and shredded chilli chicken which was a bit too shredded to taste much chicken. Sauce was quite nice though.Overall decidedly average. I've definitely had worse but have also had much better. Wouldn't be rushing back but wouldn't discount it either.

Ordered two orders over consecutive nights, whilst staying in Berwick. Waited approx (45mins) when it was at its busiest , which you can't complain at for being Saturday night ! Very tasty & fresh, is one of the best I've tried for a long time . Highly recommend!

Overall the quality of all meals ordered were nice in taste with a good amount to feast on (apart from the missing bag of chips)We stayed in the local Berwick holiday park so decided to ring in advance to save time. They said it would be ready for collection in ten minutes (apparantly). Upon arriving I stated the name in which the order was placed. The member of staff looked confused, asked for the name a second time, and proceeded to ask what I actually ordered.They must have misplaced the order perhaps as around 5 other people who had ordered over the phone walked in and walked back out in a few minutes where I was stood waiting for 15-20 mins. The phone call obviously did nothing to help my order as they must have started it as i got there!Summary: nice food but poor organisational skills by members of staff (on this instance at least).

Bought selection of starters here including bbq ribs, chicken satay skewers and prawn toast all really large portions and was great value for what we spent. The satay sauce was one of best have tasted however partner did not think much of Chicken Maryland have got more items included from other places, was a bit lacking in what was provided.

One of the best Chinese takeaways I've had!! Easy menu to read, value for money, gorgeous food. I'd recommend the kong po chicken

The chicken satay starter was just in a salty mild curry gravy no peanuts or coconuts and the spicy ribs were very tough and gristle really not edible. The chicken chow mein and Cantonese chicken were good best dish was the special fried rice lots of chicken and prawns. The restaurant is nicely presented and very clean. We would go again just no starters. Service was quick and friendly.

Tried this Chinese as people had said its the best in berwick,and we must admit its first class !! Portions are massive and great value for money we couldn't fault it all.My wife had king prawn with cashews and chips I had chicken in oyster sauce with chips Side portion of prawn toast ( you get 8 pieces) and prawn crackers all for just £17 And believe us we couldn't fault any part of it Defiantly worth trying this Chinese you won't be disappointed

We tried this takeaway and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the food was. We ordered the set meal menu with extras and it arrived within 30 minutes, was hot and they delivered to our caravan door.

After reading the reviews on here we tried this take away last night. Service quick but meal just ok. Curry quite watery. Crispy beef strange. Chewy. Don't know why they serve main with rice as we normally have 3 mains 1 rice but had 2 of each last nice. Not expensive but would try somewhere different next time.

I am sorry but I tend not to write bad reviews as I am easily pleased and know people normally mean well but the experience we had here was remarkable. On holiday and we got a chicken foo young with boiled rice and few other things. I noticed a black hair in my meal so we kept the dish and contacted take away. We were offered another meal but my wife was put off so she went in to request a refund.We were told by woman owner that only the foo yung was to be refunded. This was to her reluctance. My wife tried to explain the whole meal was ruined. This was not accepted. When you buy from this chinese the boiled rice comes included ......... When she gave us the refund she deducted the full price of the boiled rice. To be honest a big embarrassment. It was a shame to as the food was nice and these things can happen but it was the customer service which made me right this. I would have let things go happily if it was not for this appalling attitude. I am sorry but this is 100% facutal. We will never be back.

Used this Chinese takeaway a few times while at the caravan site. Delivers to the caravan, ideal if you've had a shandy or two. Great tasting food and decent size portion. Cooked while you wait and it's not a long wait if you're at the shop. Will use again.

We phoned our order in and picked it up 20 minutes later....beef in black bean sauce, chicken fried rice, chicken chow main, chicken satay and spicy chicken wings. £25 well spent. Tasty, good portions with no greasy lips afterwards. Highly recommend.

Delivery took 60 minutes to arrive at the caravan, ordered salt and chilli chicken, it was more like 4 times fried batter, disgusting and chewy disappointment. Chinese was brilliant 2 years ago, completely went downhill. I definately do not recommend

Was recommended by the owner of the cottage we were staying in just outside Berwick upon Tweed. It does not take card payments but there are cash points just round the corner.Fantastic take away food, cooked fresh, big portions and extras such as prawn crackers and a bottle of coke included free with certain spends. Excellent crispy duck! A hit with all the family!

Great food, massive portions it was not a disappointment! Served rapidly and food lovely and hot, I would say my meal was the best beef and mushroom I have ever had! The only dad thing is that I can't take the Chinese takeaway back home with me.

We have been here a number of times and and had delivery made to our caravan. We have had no complaints about any of our orders. The staff have always been friendly and are willing to adapt the order to suit out very fussy 9 year old. Would highly recommend and cant wait to visit again in october 2015!!!

Stopped in here for a takeaway dinner while on holiday. The selection on the menu is good with lots of varied choices, you get rice included in most dishes (which is a nice touch as Im used to purchasing rice extra at my local takeaways)Ingredients seem fresh and food was prepared quickly. Staff seemed nice and were pleasant.Food was pretty average though. It was edible enough and tasted fine but I would say I find all of my local takeaways superior. Just fine, nothing to rave about.

Have had lots of food from this establishment and it never disappoints! Normally pick up rather than have it delivered and the staff are always very friendly and pleasant.

Someone told us food all good except for curry. We ordered mixed starters and a crispy chicken dish and both were very nice. We will be back next time we are in Berwick

Great authentic restaurant, food was lovely and service was great, prices are brilliant, good for couples and families.

Staff is happy and friendly. Food was prepared quickly. Singapore noodle is served mild with a broad noodle...could be spicier and have a few more shrimp, but nice that it is kept on the dry side in terms of sauce. Chicken in honey and chili sauce was much milder than expected; would be nice to have sauce served separately. Generous portions.

Ordered prawn cocktail x2 paid £4 each when i got home and opened it, it had about 5 prawns and the smallest amount of sause and salad the prawns did not taste fresh i didnt even eat it would never use again! Absolutey horrible!

This place is so busy and I can certainly see why. Their food is delicious and must be the cheapest chinese in the town.

It was 12 years ago that we last ate here and we indulged in a banquet then, as we did on our most recent visit. The food is wonderful and very reasoanbley priced- £25 apiece for a sumptuous four course set menu. Wines and beers at very fiar prices; much to commend about the Golden Star ina town where there is so little competition that it would have been easy for the owners to let their standards slip. But that is certainly not the case as far as we are concerned!

Waited about 35 mins in shop and when we got back to caravan food was cold and was,nt very tasty at all.

Every dish we ordered was spot on,,,They even did us pak choi which wasn't on the menu,,All round great take away,Many thanks

Visited this on recommendation and not dissapointed. We arrived at the Takeaway and found the place to be full, which is always a good sign, the friendly assistant that served us very polite even though she was very busy. After a little wait the meal arrived and we drove home, i wish we could have ordered less as the portion sizes were large. The food was great and we shall return!

As the chinese takeaway wasnt open in the haggerston castle caravan park, we were told by the reception that this 'restuarant' was the best in Berwick. Obviously not. We ordered a medium sized order at about 6:20pm. At 7:45 it still hadnt arrived so we rang to see where it was. They told us it had already left and should be there any minute now. At 8:20 it still wasnt here. We'd waited over 2 hours now with young children to feed. We rang back an they aaid they'd been busy and the delivery guy had just left. They'd blantly forgotten about are order. We then had a phone call at 8:40 from the delivery guy who said he was outside the address he had been told which wasnt our caravan address. We then told him our number of the caravan and he was soon here. Food was JUST warm and average taste, so not worth the wait and was promised discount and never got it. Absoulute discrase, wouldnt recomend at all.

Good menu friendly staff and always happy to help. Set menu's are excellent value for money. Only set menu's I know that can be changed!!

Used the Golden Star for the first time this week and have to say it was very good, the portions were large and full of meat and hot which was a bonus. I would certainly use again.

We've used this takeaway on a few occasions when we've been visiting Berwick and have never been disappointed. The menu is extensive and well priced and the food is excellent. Highly recommended
