Golden Star in Kingston upon Hull, City of

Ordered beef curry and chips, sweet and sour king prawns in batter, and noodles. The curry had no flavour as though it had been watered down and tasteless and the beef was a pale grey colour.? The prawn balls were uncooked inside and the sweet and sour sauce was thick red gloop. I did ring and complain because we've gone to this takeaway for years and fair enough it has been hit and miss at times, but tonight enough was enough. £ 20 down the drain that I couldn't afford to waste. The one star is for the noodles.

Ordered bbq ribs - only to receive ribs in what I can only describe as a curry and gravy mix. Ate it because it wasn’t bad but regarding the price we paid it just wasn’t worth it. Didn’t realise until we had gotten back to ours and couldn’t be bothered to go and complain. Expected bbq and there wasn’t a hit of it in sight. The boiled rice we got was clumped together like it had been cooked the day before. Service was less than standard - they wasn’t busy with only one other customer in and yet seemed to want us gone - no smile no greeting just what having and the amount it cost - not even asking if I wanted something else. Wildly over priced only came here because my usual place was shut. Don’t think we’ll be returning.

Have to give 2star for food as chips were cold and so was the boiled rice

Food excellent... service poor waiting in the shop for an order for 80mins..people coming in after me being served...they just seem only interested in online orders...won't be going again

lovely place for food i will say i enjoy the chinese but one thing id like to say. the other day i went in to collect my chinese to be greeted by a rude boy with greasy hair named harvey picking his nose. before my food this is not what i wanted to see first thing and it can say a lot about a business. do better harvey

Previously posted how good it was here . However, seems like it's losing its way quality wise . Last couple of times I've been served what seems like reheated chips . Not a great way to look after customers .

Just had the worst crispy beef in Cantonese sauce ever, the beef was incredible the so hard and over cooked and there was no taste to the sauce what so ever, don’t know how it can vary so much from one week to another. It’s never been good since Pete left but tonight it was really dreadful

Our usual Chinese, for some reason, was closed, so we used Golden Star instead. We thought it was quite expensive compared to our usual. Starters were lovely and very nice. Main courses were ok, the meat was cut up very small for some reason. Overall ok but not blown away. For spending nearly £100, they gave us 2 x free bags of prawn crackers, which we thought was a bit tight and could have offered a little something more. 😫

First time purchasing from this restaurant and we were all blown away on how delicious and the portion size were fab. The staff were extremely friendly and kind.

The girl was friendly but I was not impressed. I am vegetarian, I asked for vegetable spring rolls and inside there was prawn and what I assume was (but hope wasn’t) meat. We won’t be returning.

Use to be a nice Chinese takeaway but think they have changed owners! Me & my family ordered chicken fried rice & duck fried rice & it was rank, the fried rice was like glue!! Will not be going back after using this chinese for a fair few years!

By far the worst Chinese I have had in years. Tasted very watered down, lacked flavour and didn’t coke with prawn crackers. Very disappointed today the least.

Placed my order on Just Eat and accidentally didn't check the delivery option. My order was confirmed as a collection. I instantly (within 10 seconds) called them to notify them that I needed to amend my order to be delivered, only to be told it was already cooked. The member of staff I talked to was very rude and abrupt and very unprofessional. Luckily my order was cancelled. My bad for not checking the options but to be spoken to in this manner is not acceptable. I will not be using this takeaway again with that attitude.

2.5 hours waiting for delivery that didnt arrive. Called after 1.5 hours to be told it was out for delivery. Will not use again.

Food wasn't up to the standard of past meals, was cold and had something missing out from the order.

No idea what's going on, used Golden star for over 27 years, the quality use to be amazing, and a few years ago it went down hill, mushrooms that you would have thrown away, curry like water and stupid hot, tiny chopped up baby food chicken.. so didn't go for well over a year, maybe 2, braved it..and had gone back to the great quality.. however the last 6 months has gone back to yuk... the curry when we tipped it out was like the meat and prawns warmed up and curry sauce tipped on top, so when we tipped out no sauce on the meat and prawns.. and water juice.. the rice was like when you have left over and try to warm it up the next day by drizzling water on top, puffy and tasteless, the prawn toast is so greasy, you squeeze it and oil gushes out.. Thought maybe just a bad day.. tried following month same thing, so started using a different one.. thought we would try again to see if had got better.. and No.. Such a shame as use to travel especially for this, the food use to be great quality's , no corners cut.. The staff are absolutely lovely, so such a shame that the food is not..

Ordered from here tonight it was disgusting, all the rice was lumpy, the chips was soggy like they was microwaved, chicken skewers was all hard we asked for no vegetables and they put vegetables in there. I don't care how busy you get the food should be amazing it was disgusting.

We have been using this service for twenty years or more and have found it to be of consistently good quality and value for money. Service is prompt and the staff polite and friendly. I would happily recommend this service to anyone

They don’t appear to season anything. Or very little seasoning. Salt being missing from the meals. I know I can just add my own, but shouldn’t have to with a Chinese meal. Such a shame, I remember this place being nice. I’m not saying it was a bad meal. All cooked well, piping hot, just lacked flavour.

Asked for a receipt not received, called restaurant told to ring driver no answer. Had meal spare ribs, under cooked and tasteless, KP black bean sauce disgusting would not give to my dog. Called again and he put the phone down on me ! Keep away from this place it’s rotten from the food to the service.. never again ! How anyone can give this place anything above 1star is beyond me, absolutely the worst Chinese I’ve ever had by far !!

Update, since the previous owner left the food quality has dropped and the portion sizes are smaller. Prices have gone up to so unfortunately due to this we very rarely go there anymore 😕

The food was hot when we got it home, they messed up our order, the chips were under cooked, I have eaten better frozen chow mains, and it was a case of spot the meat in the rest of the meals.

We used to use this takeaway a few years ago and went back tonight and it was awful.. curry was bland and gloopy and beef was stringy and fatty. I asked for thick noodles and got thin with no flavour! The chicken with sweet chilli sauce dish was tasteless and the chicken was hard with a odd taste! Overall very disappointed and won’t be going back!

Not bad takeaway!food was ok nothing great!The one question i’d ask most chinese takeaways is when you buy a beef dish whatever it is ,is why does the beef seem tender enough but it doesn’t seem to break down in your mouth and it ends up being chewy and it ends up on the side of the plate as you cannot swallow it!??

this place is absolutely disgusting. we paid £55. for pretty much nothing. then my bf got food poisoning from this place. been throwing up 2 days . gravy was pretty much just lumps. the crispy shredded beef in peaking sauce was off coloured and did not look ok to eat at all!. just save yourselves money and do not order from here

Absolutely gutted. We had no idea that Peter didn’t manage this takeaway anymore. As soon as I saw the food I knew something had changed. Of course I now really similar reviews and see that Golden Star is under new management. The food was cold and tasteless. Unfortunately I won’t be using this takeaway again.

I have been using this takeaway for 20 years and would have recommended it to anyone....until now and I'm gutted. Ordered deep fried chicken wings in a peking sauce. When it came it was about a 3rd smaller than usual and had streaks of yellow in it...it had curry sauce on it. The portion of bbq ribs were mostly gristle. We also got 2 portions of mini special fried rice and a portion of gravy which were all lovely. Amazingly those 5 items cost us £28 (including delivery). And we could only eat half of it. I did call them and gave them exactly this feedback and they were very nice. Unfortunately it does mean we will be finding an alternative.

Golden star has really taken a step up lately. The last 2 takeaways we have delivered have clearly been fresh cooked food, not greasy and bags of taste. I really hope this continues and it doesn’t slip back in to its old ways.

Delicious house special curry absolutely perfect, great quality food, the perfect heat, substance etc, spot on 10/ 10 Loved it, my fav takeaway, the staff always friendly and give a real personal feel ( Hanna) kitchen team spot on, thank you, gorgeous tea 😊😋 29th August, no idea who was cooking the curry that night but the best we have had for a long time, absolutely spot on. It can be a bit hit and miss, sometimes to runny, sometimes like mushrooms are older than me, sometimes just like hot water. Always nice, but Oh my god if I knew what chef was on that night I would always pick when they was in, hot but not stupid hot, thick and creamy, delicious. The staff are always amazing especially Hannah and Kelsey , friendly helpful, know who you are, even during covid spot on, my orders have always been right, a huge thank you and leave that chef on all the time 29th August x

Paid over the phone and collected. Delivery driver butted in the conversation between me and the cashier and swore at me. I have used golden star for years if we ever had any problems they where sorted quickly since the new owner has taken over quality has gone down aswell as service won’t be returning. Edit (after seeming your reply to my mum about I only gave my surname when I ordered I think you will find I gave my full name also how could the girl phone me if she didn’t know who the order was for? feel free to hand it to the police I’m sure they will be interested) Your staff even complain about you I was in to collect the other week and they was openly talking about how you get in the way and you make their job hard work by trying to help look like you have a very happy work force

Food not as good a quality as it used to be and a member of staff (DELIVERY DRIVER) very rude swore at hubby, he gave as much back conversation had nothing to do with him, it was just a mix up on name order.

We live 2 mins away from Golden Star and have been using this Chinese for over 20 years. The food and service are always spot on. Highly recommend it! The Chicken Hong Kong sweet & sour dish is our favorite 🤩

Easily the best Chinese in Hull with excellent front of house staff

I ordered from here today for me and my family as loyal customers of over 4 years. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!!!! I spent £35 to be sent cold mediocre food!! Every single thing tasted not to be expected from previous experience here, every thing was cold!! The duck was clap cold in a tub with the cucumber! To the point i heated this up in the microwave myself and didn’t bother to eat it. Gave it to my cat who also snubbed it! 🤮 that says it all. The manager was rude and obnoxious, would not offer refund as ‘’how could she run a business like this’’ After back and forth about how she wanted to pick the food up I had already binned, I was then offered a token of £20!! Would never eat here again so obviously the token of £20 was not appreciated. My mum is also a regular customer and had this issue a few weeks back as well as other things missing, when the delivery driver arrived he also said he had some food a few days before and it was not the best as there is a new chef. Avoid at all costs, otherwise you’ll pay for the privilege of cold awful food and crap management!! 🤮

Like there beef curry & egg fried rice

So ordered again from here, after being given a free meal last time, due to incompetent staff ( play me once, more fool you! Play me twice, more fool me?!) Only to be sent the wrong order. Anyway, shocking customer service, when you ring up to complain again, ask for the manager, and he actually puts the phone down on you! Wow.... do not order from here if you want a nice meal....

Now this place is the best on Beverley Road...I'm a curry queen, and this Ignites me! Fab.

They forgot my drinks, chips were not properly cooked and flavourless despite being 'salt and pepper' chips, salt and pepper chicken hard and barely any chicken. Only thing we ordered that was decent was the prawn crackers.

I have been using this take away for more than fifteen years, NEVER again. A mistake by the person taking the order was not dealt with well at all, even after speaking to the 'manager' customer service costs nothing, apart from customers when it is missing!

just travelled to hull from Beverley, STILL DIDN'T GET MY ORDER RIGHT, even when I told them and was said 3 time, dont think they listen to you properly !!!

All ways used golden star. Clean kitchen and waiting area,l with friendly staff, all ways busy and food is all ways hot and fresh. If there's any problems with your food they're all ways happy to replace it with a fresh meal and deliver it to you as soon as possible. I never go away else for my Chinese food.

Always the quickest place for delivery so piping hot food every time. Opted for the special foo young, boiled rice and curry sauce to share as trying to lose a little weight lol. A nice big slab of omelette with plenty of filling, I personally don't like prawns so a I picked them out and gave them to the wife who loves them. The curry sauce had just the right amount of spice and consistency. The only reason for not 5 stars is the rice was a tiny bit stuck together probably on account of it been a delivery although when separated with a fork was fine. All fed for less than £12 delivered, superb.

Great food and fast service every time I use them

1hr and 40 minutes later the food arrived and had to warm it up in the microwave plus x1 curry sauce and X2 chips where missing from the order. Tried blaming me but I knew exactly what I had ordered because I had it written down in front of me! Very unhelpful and said they could send the missing food out but it would be in 1 hours time.....what a joke! Very disappointed customer.

In all the years I have been using this takeaway they have only ever got two orders wrong. Once when they forgot drinks (which I still never got with my next order but I didn't mention it so it's my own fault, and second when they sent curry instead of gravy, and it caused world war 3 in my house 🤣) other than that I cannot fault this takeaway. The food is delicious! The gravy is amazing. Generous portion sizes! Food is always hot. You also get a free gift when they are running a promotion which is always a nice surprise. I still have my chop sticks and calander from many years ago ☺ Thank you for the great food and service, and an affordable price to say the least! The only chinese take away I ever use :)

Food came on time and nice and hot but everytime I order my food it changes every time. The beef and broccoli is full of oil with No taste.. And never heard of beef and broccoli with onions in it.

Food delicious, always hot, well packaged. Plentiful. Delivery driver takes care. Approximate delivery time quite good despite distance of 4.3 miles and busiest time of day. Usually about 45/50 minutes Phone very busy at opening time. We used to collect, before lockdown.

I have used this take away for a few years and during the pandemic it has become a regularweekly event. I am honestly say I have never had a bad meal from the place and look forward to it every week. The starters and set meals are well worth it

Spent over £30 for dried out “salt and pepper chicken” which was Judy chewy dried up batter. Chicken fried rice that tasted like soap and I asked for stir fried noodles and they gave me soft noodles. Not very happy.

We waited 2 hours for our order to arrive either cold or exceptionally greasy. Unfortunately it saddens me to say it’s the worst meal we have ever had. We’ve been using this takeaway for years and years and this is the first bad meal. Either it’s under new ownership or the chef has changed. The curry sauce is absolutely tasteless. Very disappointing.

More than 25 years later this is still one of the very best takeaways anywhere! Really tasty food, good generous portion sizes and good value for money. Absolutely reliable, very friendly people, our go to takeaway.

Used this Chinese for ,30 yrs never lets you down

Food has got progressively worse with everytime I've ordered over the last 4 months but yesterday when I ordered it was absolutely horrible, barely any meat in the special fried rice and the omelette had so much juice and something tasted off about the entire meal?

I ordered from here as my usual Chinese is shut during the lockdown. Food arrived quickly but was left disappointed. I was really looking forward to fluffy boiled rice but what came was most definitely microwavable rice. The curry had little to no flavour. In fact the only thing I liked was the plastic containers and the chip carton.Will not be returning.

My usual is place is closed so thought we'd try here, spent almost £20 more then from my usual place and got way less , portions are tiny and food is massively dissapointing amost £50 and not enought food for three people , shop is about 10min up road yet took almost an hour and 30min to get here. If you have an appetite simply steer clear. Worst value for money of all Chinese takaways I've ever had

Called in here the other night for a takeaway for the first time in a while. Speciali curry and egg fried rice and Singapore Chow Mein. Both were pretty good and good value. Truth be told I only went here because I've been a regular visitor to the Oriental Star just along the street. It has gone right off the boil and I'm sure will be losing trade to the Golden Start. Both the dishes I got were packed full of meat and prawns and very tasty. This place will be getting my trade from now on.

I've reviewed Golden Star before and used it regularly for a couple of years. Haven't used it for at least a year but have to say that the last meal I got (last week or so) was awful. Hope they manage to turn things around but I won't be going back until things have improved dramatically.

i have used golden star for 30 years and the food has always been very good,on my latest order the barbeque ribs and salt and pepper chicken wings were excellent,unfortunately the curry and chips were very disapointing,the chips tatsed warmed up and when emptied from the carton they came out like a solid block,more than likely frozen and microwaved,never had this in previous years,also noticed the portion size has dropped at the same percentage the prices have increase,especially the pancake rolls,tend to buy 1 main and some extras due to prices but still good tasting food

The original and best. Great, tasty food and very quick service. My only minor issue is portion size is too big for my diet...
