Golden Orient in Croydon

We were recommended by a friend saying how good the food was, and they probably had a good night with their food. Our order was not pleasant at all. The beef chow mein was very chewy, the egg fried rice was like a slab when serving with orange bits in which probably was the egg, and the crispy chilli beef lived up to its name, it was too crispy and very brittle. not happy at all for the price we paid.

I love this Chinese takeaway but I've just ordered the chicken curry and it is just a watery mess ...such a shame

I had the most horrendous experience at Golden Orient Chinese Takeaway that compelled me to write this review. As a frequent customer, I've always enjoyed their food and service, but what transpired during my recent visit was utterly unacceptable. On Thursday, 28th September 2023, I placed an order as usual. However, this time, the quality of the food I received was shockingly subpar. Expecting a resolution to this issue, I decided to contact the restaurant and express my concerns. Little did I know that this simple act would lead to a nightmarish encounter with the front-of-house staff, particularly a woman who identified herself as Helena, then Hay, and later another name. My attempt to address the food quality issue was met with complete disrespect and indifference. Helena, or whatever her real name is, displayed a complete disregard for customer values and showed a shocking lack of professionalism. When I pointed out the issues with my order, her response was nothing short of outrageous. She not only refused to acknowledge the problems with the food but also dismissed my concerns callously. Her words were both offensive and deeply hurtful. She told me that if I had a problem, I should come to the shop. When I requested a replacement or a refund, she flatly refused, saying, "If you don't like the food, then don't eat it." This level of customer service is not only appalling but also inexcusable. It's disheartening to see a restaurant I've trusted and frequented for so long tolerate such behaviour from its staff. The front-of-house team at Golden Orient Chinese Takeaway needs urgent retraining on how to treat customers with respect and professionalism. Despite this terrible experience, I want to believe that it does not represent the values of the restaurant as a whole. However, if such incidents continue, it's inevitable that Golden Orient Chinese Takeaway will lose many loyal customers as they have now lost me as a customer. In conclusion, my recent visit to Golden Orient Chinese Takeaway was marred by a complete lack of customer care and respect. I sincerely hope that the management addresses this issue promptly and takes corrective action to prevent such experiences in the future. As of now, I'm left deeply disappointed and disturbed by this encounter and do not recommend this restaurant until significant changes are made in the front-of-house service and quality of food.

Ordered in Uber, the quantity is great, delivered on time and the price is affordable but the taste is awful, especially the chicken fried rice. Bad odour and the quality of rice is very bad. My intention is not to defame the restaurant but want to help fellows out.

Just had a takeaway. My special chow main had hardly any meats in it. And just 2 tiny prawns. Terrible

Food arrived earlier than expected and was hot. The menu has a very good range. Food was nice but not great, no stand out flavours and included lots and lots of onion. Too much. Chilli beef was very chewy. Spring rolls were dull and they’re usually light crisp with good content. Mostly cabbage today. Noodles, seaweed and ribs were very good and made the meal. We’ve been coming here for many years and would usually rate 4 stars so maybe an off weekend or change of staff.

Ordered via just-eat. Food arrived in time. All food was cooked nicely and had flavour. They don’t do the crispy chips but these were tasty. Sweet and sour is on the sour side but my family prefer this.

We ordered a takeaway last night for the first time from this Chinese and we will definitely be using it again . The food was delivered on time it was very tasty , not greasy at all, and hot .

Been going here for a while but guessed they recently changed owners. I ordered on the website as it was raining and didn’t really fancy going out. Ordered at 7:30pm and picked the ASAP time. Got to 8:15 and called the takeaway and the person on the phone said that it left 15 mins ago and will arrive shortly. Got to around 8:30pm and nothing, I called again and she said it’s should be there. I said “that if it doesn’t arrive in 10 minutes what can I do?” She replied “ what ever you want? “, and long story short, I had to go to the takeaway at 8:45pm and my order was still there. After arguing with the delivery driver and not with the owner, requested for a refund and that didn’t seem like an option for them. Ask for a new food, they just recooked it.

Disgrace.........nearly 2 hours and our food still isn't here.......call to find out what's going on and they've got no idea what's happening....said the food will be here when they knock at the door....just kept getting palmed off.......still not here but let's hope its right.........steer well clear they are useless

Ordered Singapore Fried Rice and it was the worst experience taste wise 😞 very disappointed. It’s the worst Singapore fried rice I ever had in my life.

Delievery took 1 hour 40 minutes. They said it was waiting to be delivered but then said it wasn't cooked. Portions are small - whole box no where near full

Our local Chinese in Purley, have been visiting for the best part of the last 6 years and highly recommended it there! the smoked shredded chicken is great!

Found a long hair in my food and had to throw the whole order away. Restaurant offered to replace 1 item but would not refund. If you want hair in your food order from here. The hair was about half a foot long. Just to update 14/03/22 thought I’d give this place another chance. This restaurant will not let you order a starter unless you also order a main which then doubles the price. So if you want only starters you have to order a main for each. Complete con for second rate food.

Used to be much better. We haven’t ordered from here for a while until tonight, it used to be better. Crispy chilli beef is now more onion with tiny side of beef. The paid for bag of prawn crackers has halved in size and the egg fried rice has no taste. It’s a shame but will go elsewhere from now on

food very good, not traditional but worth the price. pretty delicious! order a main dish, and order rice with it. dont eat delivery at all costs! if the food is fried, high chances it will be soggy. takeaway is 5 stars nonetheless.

I have ordered take-away twice now in the last month and both times the food has been great very tasty and well presented.

Amazing food and it arrived exactly when the app said, almost scary how accurate it was! Don’t be scared of the spicy option on deliveroo tho… small amount of bite but nothing like when you select spicy at a Thai restaurant.

The food was delicious, the Singapore chow mein was great, just the right amount of spice and everything else was lovely too. Great sized portions as well. This is the only place in Purley I'd go for Chinese cuisine.

Excellent delicious Chinese food - delivered hot and fresh!

This used to be my go to Chinese every other Friday night, however I found out that it’s under new management and staff, and it really shows. The last few times the food hasn’t been great at all. My last order was the last straw for me... everything was bland/tasteless, chicken balls were overcooked and to top it off my wife found something hard in the spring rolls! The food was so bad it made me physically sick. When I rang to complain, the staff couldn’t care less. I went back with most of the food and got a refund, and was then told (by possibly the manager) “don’t order from here again”. Don’t worry mate, I won’t be! Seriously never had such a bad meal in my life and the attitude of the staff was shocking! DONT ORDER FROM HERE!

I would not recommend this restaurant! Our delivery was 30 minutes late and the food was very underwhelming. I ordered fried squid and it was very rubbery and the batter was all soggy.

The wrong order was delivered, food we don't actually eat! We called and was told, nothing we can do! 😡 They couldn't give us our money back or deliver our correct food apparently, and said we will get it right next time! Do not order from here! Awful service.

The food was good, but the kung po prawns were a bit sweet and lacking in chillies, however this was the first time that happened, so I put it down to the restaurant being very busy.

Been here before was good service, this time took half an hour to get through and still waiting for order an hour and a half later, not happy.

Unfortunately food wasn't good at all as previously. I think restaurant have a new Chef as it was way different. Without taste and cooked in old oil. Not sure if I will be ordering again.

Delicious food and timely delivery

Normally this place is really good and the food is lovely, however it was late and not really good this evening. Small things have let it down, missing the plum sauce for the duck and it was a really small quarter. I wish they’d not shred it for you and send it whole as it was mainly crumbs. Sweet chilli dip was really peppery and overpowering and the prawn toast was soggy and so were the mini spring rolls. The egg fried rice was bland and tasted like plain boiled rice. The rest was nice and tasty and hot.

Was really disappointed today with the quality of the food. Delivery was super efficient and ordering was easy. But the food.... shredded chicken had sinewy chewy thin shreds of gristle. The peking dumpling were either boiled or fried and definitely not grilled with some nondescript dipping sauce. Still searching for a good takeaway in Purley.

We totally loved our food, we have used many chinese places in the area, New Wonderful, Blossom House etc but this was far the best. Food filled to the brim in the containers, food piping hot and just tasted devine - will be using these again

We were regulars of Golden Orient and really liked it, but unfortunately our vegetable chow mein had a couple of little pieces of meat in it this time. We are very clearly vegetarian - only ever ordering tofu and vegetable dishes. But that's besides the point, there should never be a cross contamination of dishes/ingredients in a clean and well maintained kitchen. Sadly will not be ordering from here again.

Placed order at 6:40 Scheduled to arrive at 7:50 Had to chase twice before food eventually arrived at 8:25!! Food itself was average - honey ribs had very little honey and dry. Chicken satay, salt and pepper chips and sweet & sour chicken were good, although the sweet and sour sauce good have come in a bigger pot. Chow mein was okay and the deep fried chilli beef portion size was small and seemed to be topped up with onions. Banana fritter with syrup was very disappointing- the fritter was soft and the banana was tasteless.

Best Chinese we've had in ages!

We were happy with most dishes, apart from the chicken fried rice. The rice was white with no evidence of being fried, there were a couple of chunks of chicken hidden underneath, but when we opened it we thought they had sent us boiled rice by mistake. The stuffed crab claws also had quite a floury texture. The satay chicken was generous, the dry spare ribs were cooked perfectly and were nice and meaty, the coconut butter prawns were delicious, and we were also impressed with the salt & pepper aubergine. We'll definitely order from them again.

Food was good, delivery was a little late but not by a lot so didn’t mind waiting as the quality of food is always so good.

Golden Orient is a local Chinese takeaway, and although the food could be worse, it could be a lot better. The quality of some dishes can widely range between visits, as can the meat to sauce amounts. I think their biggest problem is when it comes to amount of orders. They're consistently late with their deliveries and even on collection orders, simply I think because they take on so many more orders than they can manage. While I was picking up my order (which was ready 30 minutes later than the 30 minutes I'd already been told it would take to be ready) the receptionist took 2 more phone orders. I feel like there needs to be more control over the amount of orders that they can take, which would lead to a lot less complaints I feel. The takeaway is reasonably priced, but I'd suggest ordering very well in advance of you actually wanting to eat to avoid disappointment

Tasted fresh and good flavour. The salt and pepper chicken was a tad too salty for my taste. But all of the other dishes were spot on

Arrived very late. Called the restaurant 80 minutes after order (20 minutes post estimated delivery) to be told that it would be another 30 minutes. Very poor planning which is such a shame as the food is good.

Terrible. Was very late - called - was told out with driver - another 20 mins - no food - called again - still out with driver - 45 mins after originally told out with driver - still no food - called again - now told driver just left with food. Tried then to cancel (as my wife now cooking for children who need to go to bed) - was told I couldn't. Eventually turned up 1 hr 20 mins late. Food was ok but wrong noddles (came with no meat). Won't be going back.

Food was delicious but it was only by luck that someone was home in time to take delivery as it was 40 minutes early.

Had a few deliveries from these guys now. Decent food. 1 delayed delivery out of 3 but overall - can't be faulted.

For the second time our food has been delivered over an hour late, despite ordering 4 hours before delivery time. Once bitten. Twice shy.

When I ordered extra chilli I didn’t expect my food to turn up cold.

Great tasty food, one of the best chinese takeaways in the area. Would be nice if delivery was a bit quicker but they do tell you upfront it will take an hour which is fair play.

Use this chinese take away all the time. Unfortunately tonight the food turnt up late and was cold. Usually the food is very good.

Disappointed as I saw so many good reviews. 35 minutes late which I get on a Saturday, but just say that it’ll take longer than the original hour delivery slot given. Food was hot, but the crispy chilli beef was anything but crispy, prawn toast drowning in oil, chop suey straight up wasn’t nice. Won’t be ordering from here again

Food delivery was quite long at an hour, but it came when expected and was still a good temperature. The food itself was very good and we were pleasantly surprised with all the dishes. There was a slight mix up with pineapple added to the wrong dish (sweet and sour prawns) and missing from the duck with pineapple and ginger but both still tasted great and didn’t bother us too much. Overall very happy and would recommend and will be ordering from them in the future!

Ordered food at 6.30pm and it finally arrived at 8.50pm!

Food was delicious. Arrived hot and was really tasty! Only criticism is time. Ordered it for 19.00. Restaurant pushed it back to 19.15 and it arrived at 19.30. But was really tasty and the price was very reasonable.

Great food (although thick noodles, not thin)- not very oily and super flavourful. Collection was super easy and quick. All food was ready.

Bought it first time from here today and really disappointed with the taste. Dumplings was microwaved, egg fried rice was just boiled rice with scrambled eggs no taste at all my daughter could make it better, chicken with vegetables was tasteless. I normally buy it from another shop on high street thought would give it a try but never again. Portions and service is good but its a shame they missed the important part which is food taste.

Best tasting Chinese I've tried so far in the area (about 8) although special fried rice was a bit bland & pale. Ability to adjust spice in crispy shredded beef is great.

Usually great food. Prawn balls were lovely, however the seaweed (usually salty) was very sugary. Prawn crackers also didn’t taste very good, possibly due to a different oil being used.
