Unfortunately, it was a complete disaster when it came to the food. 2x fish & chips + onion rings. Everything actually looked visually appealing and was freshly prepared. Super nice service, but the food was terrible for my taste. The fries were limp and tasted like old fat, the fish also had no taste and the onion rings were also totally soft and tasted like old fat. The best-before date for the two sachets of remoulade sauce had expired for almost three months. We ate the fish hanging and choking because we don't like throwing away food, but unfortunately the rest went in the trash. The whole thing for around 25 pounds, phew. The best was the Diet Coke and Fanta - a shame.

Delicious food and wonderful people. You can really feel how this chipshop is their passion. Ill come again

Absolutely AMAZING experience. We went as a university society with an absolutely massive group of people (we did call ahead to try and warn them of the horde that was about to descend). They handled the shed load of people without even breaking a sweat, and were super lovely as well. I felt really bad about bringing so many people at once, and they did have to stay open an extra hour for us, which I felt awful about, but they were absolutely lovely about it! In terms of food, no notes. Stunning. It ate, literally. One of the best chippies I've ever had, and definitely top in Edinburgh. Even after serving 63 of us the food was still top quality and utterly delicious. Batter crispy, chips the perfect ratio of fluffy:crispy, and well salted as well. All for a very reasonable price too, considering we were on the beach. Overall, an absolutely STUNNING experience with the best food, vibes, and service. A real family business. If you're ever in portobello and in need of a chippy, golden bite is the plaice to go.

genuinely my favourite chippy I've tried so far in Edinburgh. I called ahead as I was coming with a big group and we turned up with 63 people (about double what we had predicted) and they were amazing and managed to accommodate us all. they even gave us some free samples of food to try. the owners are lovely and it's a family business. aside from the absolutely STUNNING service, the food is amazing. freshly battered and fried fish along with piping hot chips and stone fired pizzas makes this chippy sensational and I couldn't ask for a single thing better. they also have extremely fair prices for the portion sizes. if you're ever in Edinburgh please please please come here as you will not regret it.

I visited last night while parked up in my truck at the truckstop nearby after reading the great reviews on here. I fancied eating fish and chips on the seafront. The couple working were nice people, very friendly. The fish was cooked to order, which was great. The batter was light and crispy. The chips and curry sauce were good too. When I opened the box at the seafront, I saw that I'd been given a free potato fritter too, which was nice. I'll be eating there again next time I'm in Portobello.

Dropping son off at Uni nearby, we were looking for dinner before heading home. The restaurant we usually go was full, so I looked online for the best fish and chips, it was a nice night and we reckoned we could eat outside. I found The Golden bite and went along. The welcome was warm, my order for 4 fish suppers was taken by the gentleman cooking, and he advised the fish was cooked as ordered, freshly, which is such a good thing, I hate fish that’s been lying for a while! The two women in the BBC shop were also lovely, I can’t say enough how warm all 3 were, chatting, laughing and joking, it was lovely. Took our food (a free order of fritters thrown in was very well received and appreciated) to the beach to enjoy, the fish and chips were fantastic, thoroughly enjoyed by us all. I’ll definitely be back! Can’t recommend this chippy highly enough!

Wee visit to Portobello beach to enjoy the rare sunshine. Would usually eat some fish n chips from one of the food places on the promenade but decided to look at google reviews for best rated and found Golden Bite. Just a short stroll from the promenade to the main street and luckily the Golden Bite wasn’t long open for business. We only wanted to share a fish supper as a late lunch so that’s what I asked for. We were treated to some crispy fresh chips while waiting for the fish being cooked to order. Owner was welcoming and chatty and you just knew he was at the top of his game and I wasn’t disappointed when we were served lovely fresh crispy battered fish with golden chips. We’ll be wandering up from the promenade next visit to Portobello. Easy recommendation.

Really nice warm and welcoming people here serving piping hot fresh haddock and chips! Yummy. We took ours to the beach even though it was a blustery, grey and dreary day. Would come again when in the area.

Me and my girlfriend went to Portobello to enjoy a walk along the coast and we had the possibility to eat the best fish&chips in Edinburgh!! Wonderful, friendly, nice family who prepares good, tasty, fresh food on the spot, in front of us. The best choice to taste the better fish&chips here!

Maybe not the best fries with the fish, but these people are so nice! You also get a good feeling with your Fish and Chips, and that alone is worth five stars. Take the fish with you in your cardboard container and sit on the beach to eat it. Edit: We've been back after two years and it's still great! Hopefully this couple will continue with their wonderful business for many years to come.

When I first walked in, I was greeted with a warm welcome, and when ordering a fish supper, the waiting time was no more than 5 minutes. In the meantime, I was asking about the area since I am new to Portobello. They were accommodating, and knowing a family ran it made it ten times better to try the food. When it came to tasting it, the fish batter was soft but crispy and not hard to chew on, and the chips were just perfect for me. I enjoyed it and can’t wait to try one of their pizzas next.❤️

The staff there are absolute stars 🌟 we have come up for our holiday and saw the great reviews on here so decided to give them a go. The staff were so so lovely and let us try their brown chippy sauce - stunning! Not only did they provide first class service but the food was incredible. Hands down best chippy. It’s a good place near the portobello beach to have some food. I had Haggis, chips and pizza. They made the pizza in front of me, and all food was delicious. And it’s pocket friendly as well.

Went in after being at the beach. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Very old school chippy and serves food in paper which is what I like, none of this cardboard box rubbish. Used to go to perth all the time once a week for a chippy but me and the wifey will be going here regularly now instead. 5 star highly recommend.

Absolutely delicious. My wife and I stopped in after visiting the beach and were very pleasantly to find very friendly staff, delicious food, and great prices. Highly recommend the fish and chips and make sure you try the brown sauce.

This is one of the best, if not the best fish and chip shop i’ve ever been to. Not only was the fish very fresh and delicious, it was also massive with a good portion of chips as well. Whilst waiting i was offered complementary potato fritters as well which were amazing, whilst the fish was cooking the man was casually chatting with us a bit about it and we only had to wait 5 minutes at most. This is a great chippy and i highly recommend that everyone comes here for a supper at least once.

We left Edinburgh's city center to visit the beach and found this place to grab two fish and chips and eat them at the beach. There were absolutely wonderful, very tasty and fresh. Golden Bite is a great place and the people there are wonderful. If you want something to eat at the beach stop there before to grab something, the experience is fantastic. We recommend!

My first chippy shop in life, overall a great experience. Food was quite good, fish freshly fried and rather on the bigger side, but vinegar is a must! Chips with curry sauce were my mistake, sauce itself was really great, but it ruined the crispiness of traditional large cut chips. Haggis fritter was bloody delicious, a bit spicier than I expected but that's just the better! Atmosphere was absolutely fantastic, lady behind the counter really friendly. Overall great experience and alright prices. Would recommend

Best Fish Supper and the Pizza is excellent

Catching some fish and chips after a busy day out (on holiday) and I really wanted to love this place after seeing all the positive reviews, The couple (m running the shop (I presume husband and wife?) were genuinely so nice and friendly, and excellent communication about our order. And as others have said, fish is cooked to order and the haddock was really good. Batter was light, crispy and well seasoned and fish very fresh. Sadly, however, the chips really let the order down. If I could split my review I’d say 5* for the fish and 1* for the chips, hence an average of 3*. Hope I just caught them on an off day, and they continue to be great for everyone else.

Very nice service and huge portion! Great and fresh fish. Nice girl advice me to take curry sauce separately - good, because I could eat only half portion and the rest I eat later. Only take away, but really close to sea, so you can eat on the beach. I highly recommend!

During our stay in Edinburgh, we went twice to this nice takeaway restaurant. On the first evening we ordered fish ' chips and ate it on the beach. On the last day, we ended up here because we made reservations at the Espy but due to kitchen failure, we couldn't eat food there. The owner is really nice and talked to us and our little boy, even gave him some candy. Ordered funghi pizza and my husband a cheeseburger with fries. We both enjoyed our food!! Would highly recommend this place, very nice staff and good food for a good price.

Had a few days away in Edinburgh so decided to go to Portobello Beach. While there we decided to have a takeaway Fish and Chips to eat on the front and found this remarkable place. The Haddock and chips were the best I have had in a long time and the couple who own the establishment were lovely, genuine people. Could not fault the Golden Bite at all and will certainly be back when next in Edinburgh.

Grundsolide Imbissbude mit Fish & Chips. Die Besitzer sind unglaublich nett und hilfsbereit. Das Essen ist gut aber eben typisch Imbiss. Perfekt um sich etwas zu holen und am Strand zu essen.
