Food was good but slightly overpriced compared to other local Chinese takeaways. Staff were pleasant when we arrived to collect but person on the phone taking the orders was very abrupt.

Took about 20-25 attempts to get through as was always busy tone. Guessing that’s just because it’s a Saturday night so not too important. Guy there took my order, seemed a little abrupt at first but once he got started with the order seemed like quite a nice guy. Food was estimated delivery 35-45 minutes and arrived spot on 35 minutes. Delivery driver was very polite. Food was all correct when it arrived and was still very warm. Also had some fortune cookies in there which was a nice touch for the kids. It was a bit more expensive than our usual takeaway and food was more expensive than it said on the menu we had. Maybe there’s a new menu? Would be nice to have a new menu delivered with the food. Overall a pretty good experience and a happy, full family.

We have just had another delivery from the golden lion and it was absolutely delicious the best ever ,we had giant sized crispy chicken balls the chicken was lovely and tender not chewy batter was crispy,the Chinese chicken was lovely and moist everything was cooked fresh and it came quickly the staff were friendly could not fault it one bit will def have the set meal for 2 again

On a friends recommendation we tried this takeaway. Never ever again!! The man who answered the phone was rude from the outset. When I asked him to read it back, he did begrudginly and then moaned as I didnt have a menu to hand. I rung back to ask the price as I had forgotten and was told I have already told you once! The singapore rice noodles were bland with no spice at all, the king poo had a nice taste but bland, the curry was watery as was the sweet and sour sauce, the chicken balls were nice. The pancake roll was tasteless, the ribs had a lovely sauce but chewy meat. No thanks

Hadn’t had a takeaway Chinese meal for many years. But on a whim we decided to have one. Ordered Set meal A for 2 and collected. Fast service. Good price and delicious food. Even able to save some for tomorrow. Won’t take so long to order another.

I ordered a take away for delivery. The Chinese man on the phone was abrupt verging on rude. Did not read my order back. When meal arrived there were no ribs. I phoned the man back. He was rude and aggressive saying I had not ordered ribs.I definitely did. Portions extremely small for the cost. I will never ever use this place again. Be warned.

Just found out the Gold Lion is open again! That’s just as well as we’ve not had Chinese since lockdown as it’s the only one we’ll use. The food is always excellent & I have no idea how they manage it so quickly. For me it’s among the best Chinese takeaways I’ve used (and believe me I’ve tried a few).

Every time we order get man who just says "Hum" after each item. wrong items sent & garlic chicken bland ( no garlic! ) When incorrect order questioned & how to resolve no immediate apology or answer. Prices increased but no increase in quality

Always good food, polite, and I'm 50 years old and my work has moved me around the country, honestly this is my second favourite takeaway after none, as my old favourite in Folkestone Kent CT17 shut down 10 odd years ago. ☺ Much love

Really nice food always quick, cooked fresh and not silly prices. The Chinese on the main mini high street is also really nice but the Golden Lion is better value for money in our opinion for what its worth

Love this takeaway. Food is always excellent. Obviously they can be very busy at times re delivery, but it’s worth the wait or there is always the option of collection.

Food was cold and tasteless, when I spoke to the man on the phone about it he was rude and put the phone down on me

Although local find the food lacking flavour and sometimes the ribs are overcooked. Some of the dishes are ok but on whole very lacking, we have had some good dishes but some of the choices are disappointing.

We’ve been ordering our takeaways from here for the last few years, we have always found them to be polite and prompt and the food is absolutely delicious! Would highly recommend.

They said that the food would be delivered in 40 minutes, it took 1 hour 15 minutes. I ordered Roast chicken and Duck with rice, I received roast duck and chicken nuggets with dry hard rice. The food was well below average and very expensive. Because they only have one other competition in the village they think that they can sell expensive below average food. All my life living in London and Essex this was the worst Chinese takeaway ever.

We've been using the Gold Lion for years as our regular Chinese. The food is consistently good rather than spectacular, but very well priced and the cooking is super fast. Even a large order for 7 or 8 people is done in under ten minutes.

Been having Chinese here for years. Always good!! Never use any other Chinese take aways. Generous portion sizes at good prices. Duck is especially good always crispy and never greasy. Nice staff and always ready to collect in less than 15mins! Fast service

Después de ser recomendado para el León Dorado, pensamos probarlo. Tenían nuestra orden equivocada, dio un arroz sencillas, en vez de patatas fritas y sí, aunque esto no es demasiado grande, no queríamos arroz simple! Cuando mi marido, no ofrecen a entregar el chips fue simplemente me dijeron "Ah, el conductor no está aquí, lo siento" y que era eso! No sólo eso, pedí un pollo satay y apenas podía probar cualquier satay, porque no era una salsa, era como agua! No me impresionó en absoluto y no se van a volver o recomendar!

Nos pedidos para 10 personas, y la comida no estaba lista en el dot, pero a sólo 2 minutos de espera. Así que estaba caliente cuando llegamos a casa (colección de no entrega). Todos los platos eran de alta calidad y ninguno sabía "recalentados" que es lo que otros lugares parecen hacer. Tienen nuestro voto para el futuro

After reading a review on here I decided to try a take away from Gold lion as it said amazing food.....I could honestly say, it must have been a family member that wrote that review cos I think I've just eating someone's cat....I got a special chow mein and a chicken curry but did not like any of the meat in it much at all....and I am a proper meaty!!Would I go back.......most definitely NOT!! Had some amazing Chinese meals in my time but unfortunately this was not one of them sorry.....

A few days of Christmas was wearing thin so we decided to order a meal for delivery. This place is usually very good. Our order was placed and repeated for confirmation. After delivery and paying, we realised two items had been left off. We telephoned them and were told that if we wanted the missing items we would have to pay a further £7.20. Not for the food but for delivery. When I argued the phone was put down on me.A good meal spoilt by awful customer service. On the plus side, they will never have to worry about giving me poor service again as I shall not give them any further business.

We ordered our meal at 5.20pm on a Saturday night from the Gold Lion in Hullbridge (same owners). Well all i can say is what a mistake.We have tried this place lots and lots of times in the past but in past fews months it has got worse and worse. From food being cold to items missing and hairs being in meals. This evening has by far been the worse. We ordered and then waited over an hour for it to be delivered. Ordering it early we thought this would come quickly as it has done in the past.When the meals arrived we noticed that none of it was very warm and yet again items missing. Called to explain and another meal for myself was sent out. In the mean time we found out something else was missing so tried to call and due to peak time couldnt get through.Replacement meal arrived and the driver almost threw it at me. It was very hot and tasty. Thank godness, however everyone else had eatern by this point.Kept calling to say that we were still missing a meal and we would like a refund. Lady on the phone was very very rude and then put the phone down. So now we are out of pocket. Tried to call back incase it was a mistake and it was clear it wasnt as the phone wasnt answered over and over. Left a voicemail and still waiting for a sorry and our money returned.Very very very disapointed with this place and wont be ordering from here again and i will make sure that this is put on all local pages so it doesnt happen to others.

Always fast delivery, at a reasonable price and I've never had a reason to complain. Food is good and staff are friendly and happy to answer your questions, especially if you want to tweak a dish slightly. Happy to return

This is our favourite Chinese in the area. The dishes are always delivered hot and very soon after you order them (normally within twenty mins). It's excellent value, delicious food and the portions are generous too.

In my opinion, this is the best of the 3 local Chinese takeaways. Good food, reasonable price and I have never had to wait longer than 15 mins for my food to be ready. On one occasion they did forget an item from my order. I called up to let them know and within 5 minutes it was delivered to my door. Good service!

Very very happy to have found this place so close to my new home.Chinese food can be pretty generic and although this had all the usual dishes you would expect they were really really tasty and I didnt get that hangover feeling you can sometimes get from chinese food.It was average priced but I was really impressed with the food which came when they said it would.They have made a regular customer.

The food is getting worse dry over cooked ribs tasteless chicken but more importantly they have overcharged me again. Got to find another Chinese but can't in Hockley they are all bad. Errrgh

Food is very nice, only problem has been they keep overcharging. This has happened three times so far this year and for that reason only, I will not use them anymore. Ashame.

My family and I have been using this Chinese takeaway for years, and have always been impressed. They have never disappointed and the food is consistent and always up to 5 star standards! The staff are extremely friendly and polite, and I would recommend this takeaway to anyone and everyone! A credit to Hockley!

The family and I wanted some Chinese food and we hadn't tried this one so we thought that we would give it a go. But sadly they took 45 minutes to cook the food and when we got home I was eating my chicken chow mein and found a hair inside of it. Very disappointing!

We've been using this Chinese takeaway for years and they've never disappointed. The staff are friendly and the food is better than any Chinese takeaway I've ever had. Whenever we have friends over for a takeaway, they always rave about how lucky we are to have the Gold Lion as our local. I would personally recommend the Satay Chicken on Skewers starter. They are to die for. If you're after a great Chinese takeaway, then look no further!

Great chinese food every time. I have ordered from The Gold Lion quite a lot. They stopped delivering for a while but seem to have started again. A great price and choice. My go-to when a takeaway is in order. Always something new to try. Really friendly staff :)
