Goat & Boot in Colchester

The contrast between the time I came under previous management is night and day! I cannot speak highly enough of the new management. The pub is warm, welcoming, friendly, clean and a pleasure to visit. It is the polar opposite of what was here before. I used to avoid this pub now it’s the go to place in Colchester. Colchester needs a pub like the Goat and the Boot! If you can visit, you will not be disappointed! Well done to the couple managing they are superstars!

A warm welcome awaits from the new most friendly new new management. The new management are turning a bad pub into a very nice place,clean glasses friendly atmosphere and even the old customers are coming back.

Very friendly new owners , was made to feel very welcome . They are polite an engaging with everyone who visits the pub and is kept very hygienic.

Shame about the way this pub has gone done hill. Only one cask ale on and there was no atmosphere at all.

Tried to get a light lunch. We were the only 2 in the place apart from a far from welcoming barmaid and her child. No food is available. The web site needs immediate attention

After several years of regular use I have now been accused of sending a disrespectful review, and when the "barmaid accused me she maid a very sarcastic comment". Over the years the regulars have been spoken to like dirt by both marmaids, if they speak to you at all. They are rude and impolite and the state of the glasses is disgusting one regular had a slug in his pint. They take time off whenever suits them wanting to go to various events often not letting anyone know prior .In September last year those of us who smoked were told that they weren't going to get the outside heater fixed until May of this year. There is often no bitter on sometimes for 4/5 days . Having read previous reviews you can clearly see I'm not the only one who has been treated this way. Please think about giving the pub up to someone who is capable of running it properly. Shame your Dad was still there.

Went there Sunday afternoon as there was an Elvis Presley tribute playing, friendly bar staff and the other customers were very friendly. A large variety of beers wines and spirits were available at very moderate prices, garden area for the good weather with large car park for customers, will definitely be going back again 😁

They don't do food anymore and the customers are few and far between. I found the staff were very abrupt and made me feel I was interrupting their time..the beer glasses weren't clean, very disappointed with the place.

If I could give zero stars I would. The staff here were so so rude and made our group feel very uncomfortable that we ended up leaving.

Barmaid blanked us and didn’t look up from her phone. I was very polite and still she didn’t even acknowledge we were there. In my whole life, I have never been blanked. I can’t actually believe she was brazen enough to do that. I’m so shocked. Anyway, there you have it.

it is at the bottom of the hill were is rateing are . no food any more bad service.can see when i have been there not many people in the pub . there have lost the plot on how run a pub. give it up leave the pub . let some one else take over that care about the goat and boat please

Been coming in here since I was a kid with my old man. Management has changed a few times but it's still a great boozer

Have been a regular visitor of this pub for 7 years! Used to be a nice atmosphere, good food & entertainment but sadly that's all gone, no food whatsoever, dirty and the staff need a customer care course badly. When it's not being used as a cresh by a member of staff who takes her baby to work with her then you might be lucky enough to catch a football match on they're TV rather than cartoons? Oh! And if your brave enough to have a viewpoint on the place or staff and are overheard with you private conversation as I was last night beware as I was told by the lovely barmaid Gemma that if I wasn't old she would give me a slap😡 hence I will never return just like so many before me.

Was in Colchester for business and found this nice bar close to my hotel, the young lady behind the bar made me feel welcome and I'll definitely frequent her establishment again

Lovely customers, but horrendously rude and standoffish barstaff. Such a shame. They behave absolutely appallingly and even made accusations to myself, which were not only untrue, but very very rude and not at a engaging on any level. Customer service level 0.... Fingers crossed they learn some manners sooner rather than later before they ruin a lovely pub

Nice old pub. Shame they no longer serve food

What a shame. Miserable service from the barmaid. Literally driving customers away. Was made to feel so unwelcome. With it being Christmas Eve thought might be some cheer but it was as if they resented customers at all. Noticed advert in the window looking for staff. Fingers crossed someone friendly starts soon otherwise this is one to miss

Went for a drink asked for same again and they didn't have it

Awful pub we walked in on a Tuesday evening for a quite drink found very unclean sticky tables fealthy floor and just disgusting smell around the snug of backed up loo. Good range of WARM beers and Even warmer ciders but The bar mad had a horrid flu with running nose and did not Sanitise hands before picking up glasses etc so something extra with each glass; we just had to leave our first drinks untouched and get out never again,

I come here most nights. It’s a really good place to relax. They show live Football and Rugby, in both bars. They have Karaoke on Friday and a Live singer on Saturday. Also a car park for customers.

Traditional English pub with a good selection of beers and decent food. Entertainment on weekends thrown in.

1 beer from the barrel, in good condition. One way system, hand sanitizer, test and trace app still. Good. Plenty of outside seating, well spaced, plus under cover seating. Friendly bar person. 3 ciders on. Also has a car park.

Miserable service from bar maid completely unwelcoming...focused on getting my details for covid no welcome at all...what a shame used to be a great little pub. won't be rushing back that's for sure...probably explains why only 6 people in the whole pub...in these times it seems some business feel they are doing us a favour...its the other way around...don't take punters for granted

Personally like this pub to drink and eat. But living next to it is a nightmare. Currently at 00:26 they're blasting music in their garden. Wish there was some thought for the residents around them - especially during the week! Update: still going at 00:42! So confused since they close at 12am on a Thursday!

The lady (using that term loosely) behind the bar was most definitely someone that should not be in this trade! She was not only rude to us and children but her appearance was disgusting, and shouldn’t be somewhere serving food! Tables dirty, toilets stank. Avoid this place!

Whilst waiting for a drink I saw an ant carrying the body of its dead friend across the bar. That sums up the experience.

On 23rd May (pm) after 15 months away from a pub my family and I thought we’d have a well earned drink after a bike ride. I really wish I hadn’t, the barmaid was rude and ignorant to me and other customers still getting used to Covid rules! I certainly won’t be going back and that is a shame as it is my local pub!

Even though this establishment has a large beer garden at the back, they insist that all customers enter the premises personally to complete a Covid form and do not respect government guidelines by failing to offer table service . I would encourage the staff to take some customer service training in order to understand how to engage with customers in a polite and less offensive manner.

If you’re looking for a dank, fetid pub where you’ll be greeted by an angry, disgruntled bar girl, you’re in the right place. Truly the worst bar south of Hadrian’s Wall. Avoid with your last breath. One star due to Google’s minimal standards only.

Awful pub staffed by awful people. Definitely one of the worst in Colchester. Go to the Foresters Arms nearby. Brilliant bar team, great music and decent food.

Very friendly staff great atmosphere

Went there today 12.04.21 for a drink in the beer garden. No QR codes to do NHS check in on beer garden tables, no staff serving tables. Staff expected you to order at the bar and check in there. Government guidance states table service ONLY. Under current guidance, this establishment is not covid safe. Poor form for a Green King pub. Staff need to step up.

Popped in here by chance as my little one needed to use the toilet, was sceptical at first as the pub didn't look very welcoming from the outside ( could do with some love) but how surprised we was when we got into the pub, we ended up staying for a couple of drinks and food, the food was brilliant good homemade stuff, the atmosphere in the pub was welcoming and friendly and the staff member was friendly and really helpful, will definatly be back again.

Awesome Sunday roasts and the best Guinness in town.

Typical locals pub. Quite friendly

Great local bar, some really good cask beers on offer with great choice. Food is good quality with decent portion sizes, but does finish early. Sky sports on during the day showing the big games and a selection of other sports. Makes the best of the outside space that they can but always going to be a challenge with where the pub is.

They serve regulars before non-regulars. Seems to be a trend looking at other reviews. Avoid this unwelcoming establishment.

Popped in today , two of us, quite busy, Beers at the bar were good, menu was set and also a specials board. Settled for the Sunday Roast Beef with all trimmings, we were not disappointed, it was very well laid out and a great selection and amounts, we also ordered a seperate Cauliflower Cheese, that was lovely as well. Service was very attentive, quality of the food extremely good and very filling. A credit to the kitchen and waiting staff. Will certainly re-visit, we are quite local very Nice.

Great little pub, pool table, good selection of Ales and I love that they have little glass pots with a sample of each ale in them on the bar so you can see you beer before ordering without having to pester the bar staff. Good range of sport on the TV's and a little covered outdoor area as well.

In the current climate of pubs closing this place is a breath of fresh air!! You are welcomed as if it is your second home. the wide range of customers, of all age groups, makes you feel very comfortable, as you should in a local pub. The bar maid (I think her name was Amy). Was welcoming and happy to get involved in our slightly boisterous behaviour. Great place, needs support of the locals. 👍

Great choice of drinks, lots of nice cosy nooks for quiet chats. Modern decor and serves wide choice of bar snacks and food including Sunday lunch. Food finishes at 7pm so don't leave it too late. Lots of safe yo st outside and a cabin to play pool. Down side lots of TVs which dominate the pub when there's a big game on!

It only took ten minutes to be served at the bar...many yawns. No apology from bar staff. Avoid at all costs..

Really enjoy the Goat and Boot. A good, honest boozer. Great selection of beer, lager, wine, and spirits. Food is very reasonable and exactly what you would expect from a pub. Bouncy castle in the warmer weather for the young ones. Dartboard and pool table for the rest. Decent jukebox too. Live sports on too without it being too rowdy. To top it off our family is always made to feel very welcome by Jason and the rest of the staff.

The toilets didn’t flush and the service was slow. Regulars get served first so great if you visit often but not if you want to spend an evening here.

Absolutely shocking stood at the bar for 20 minutes whilst the barmaid served the person before us then decided to serve her mates who turned up and stood behind us all with a face like a smacked arse! Not impressed !

Decent boozer with a nice fireplace. Can show 2 games of footie at the same time. Think out back could have a little work done to it.

Fantastic family orientated pub that plays all the sports says great food has a garden and a car park and in the summer months have a bouncy castle for the kids all in all great place to go atmosphere is second to none

Nice quiet pub with good selection of gins and beers and other drinks. Lovely little corners to sit and enjoy your drink, outside beer garden with tables and covered pool table area.

All the food is fresh and cooked to order, the specials are changed at times. There are many different beers and lagers these are also changed .Sunday roast lunch is to die for.

Great venue for sports with out being too rowdy. Excellent real ale and our lunch was great value pub grub ,

The Sunday roast lunch was good: pork well cooked and plenty of vegetables including good roast and mashed potatoes. My companion, a young Australian prefers burgers and had one which was good and had for the greedy a large portion of chips. He could not manage these so asked for a doggy bag, which the pub could not supply, the waitress commenting that they were not a take-away! I would have thought a length of Al-foinl would have done the trick! The food was not exceptional but decent pub standard and good portions.

They wouldn't you pay with a card yhat requires a signature (so basically any foreign card). So all we had was drinks we could afford with pounds. Barmaid was unfriendly.

My mates and I went to this venue on Saturday to watch the early Premier League football game. (There were 9 of us.) It was very obvious from the outset that the landlady/manager of the pub didn't want us in there as the atmosphere was quite frosty and unwelcoming. After a while a couple of us were served food but when the rest of us wanted to order they stated the cooker was broken, some food was not available and various other excuses. We were told that if other customers wanted to watch the rugby in The Snug we would have to move (even though the rugby was already being shown on other tvs in the pub!) The landlady was pretty rude and made us feel uneasy and intimated that we should leave. We were not causing any issues and kept to ourselves. We left the pub.We've been to the Goat & Boot pub before for a few drinks whilst watching sport on their tv and have been made to feel very welcome, but not on this occasion. It was clear that the landlady didn't want us in her pub, which was near-on empty anyway! I'm not surprised pubs are closing down in vast numbers if that's how customers are treated!

A lovely nice little pub, thats gone through all these new bars in Town, and still survives, good food and drinks selection, nice staff, a nice garden for children, excellent sport tv selection.

Most awful place in Colchester staff were very rude tables were dirty and drinks over priced toilets were very dirty would advise for no one to go here ever not until they get some staff who are friendly and no what customer service is

Went tuesday too watch man city v liverpool and felt the girl worked brilliant considering she was on her own.

First time out without children for a long time. Very quiet, very comfortable. We stayed much longer than we meant to due to the lovely ambience. The landlord was very friendly and welcoming and we will certainly be back. We didn't eat but the menu is superb in terms of choice and it smells wonderful.

Friendly spot with character serving good beverages and food at a reasonable price. We enjoyed the juke box and atmosphere while relaxing after a days sightseeing.
