I am staying at travel lodge so popped here for cod and chips. Customer service excellent. I can’t understand why the locals are not queueing round the block for this place. The fish and chips were the most delicious I have ever tasted. The lady who served me was friendly and cheerful. The fish cooked to order. The portion size perfect. Chips fluffy on inside slightly crispy on outside, hot and tasty. Battered cod absolutely delicious batter crunchy golden and cooked to perfection . Sat in hotel and just had to leave a review as best fish and chips I have ever had. ( and at 50+ I have tasted lots from all over the country.) People of Glossop you are missing a Gem on your doorstep!!

Completely empty when I just went in, stood directly in front of the owner a foot away for over a minute while she completely ignored me, didn’t even bother to lift her head up, while doing a crossword. Like some bizarre comedy sketch. Gave up in the end and walked out

So good we visited twice in a week. Parking can be a bit awkward, but used my wife's blue badge parked on yellow lines. Great Fish and chips with a bonus potato fritter. Lady that served us was really friendly. I am back in August and will be back.

We were craving some fish and chips whilst in the area and found this place whilst walking around the town, and we didn’t get disappointed. Great food, prepared fresh as you wait, and great service. Best mushy peas we’ve had so far too! We will definitely go back there if we’re in the area again.

Good fish & chips & still good. A big plus if you're not ravenous-they do a small fish & chips for £3.50.

We were delighted to find this chip shop on Tuesday evening, as we were in the mood for a chippy tea! I had fish, chips, and mushy peas, and have to say that they were probably the best I've ever had! My partner had pudding, chips, peas and gravy, and was also extremely happy. Great food, and great service, thank you!

Got fish and chips with extras for six people to take away and I was very impressed. The portions were generous and the chips were lovely, cooked golden brown and still hot and cispy when we got them home. The fish were tasty with crispy batter - exactly how fish and chips should be. Will definitely go there again.

First and last time! Visit Wed 20th April around 5.30, 2 fish and chips and 2 sausage and chips. The best way I can describe the quality of the chips, imagine having chips left over from the day before and then banging back in the fryer the next evening. The fish wasn't that good either, threw more away than ate. Wasn't making the journey back to the chippy as I have better things to do! Just won't be going back! Oh and their curry sauce tasted like mushy peas with a hint of curry powder?

Always friendly and welcoming. A traditional stripped back menu for an English chippy which makes decisions easier. Children's sized portions are great value and perfect for smaller appetites too. I always go for the small cod and chips at £3.50, this portion is perfect for me. We ate indoors yesterday although they don't have full capacity seating available just yet.

Had some quick-to-go cone chips for £1.20 and they were AMAZING; portion sizes are brilliant too for the price, especially compared to other parts of the Peak District like Buxton and Bakewell, where the cheapest portion of chips is around £2. They only accept cash, but it's convenient that there's literally a free ATM at the petrol station next door, so that's not much of a problem. If I hadn't already eaten lunch, I would've had some scampi to go with it but there's always next time!

Currently the best fish and chips in Glossop....but.....if you want the real localm dish, have chips, peas and gravy its divine...and with lashings of salt and vinegar. Take also a buttered muffin (flattened bread roll) and put your pea/gravy dripping chips onto the muffin, thats the magic!! and wash it down with a can of full sugar vimto!!

A very friendly chip shop recommended to us by a local just after we walked down from the station, en route to our hotel. He uses it himself he told us proudly. It has a reasonable selection for a chippie and the first night I made the mistake of having a standard haddock and chips with mushy peas. The latter are not from a tin, as with some outlets these days! Far too much, my 70 year old appetite is not what it was. My son was also very happy with the food except when on the last night when the first potato cake, of two, he opened had minimal potato, scarcely worthy of being called a slice; worse it had been fried and then I suspect refried as it was totally dried up. A shame as everything else was good.

I needed two smaller portions of fish and chips and knew Glossop Fish Bar provided these. It was a surprisingly quiet early Friday evening so I was served immediately, something I wasn't used to. When I got the food home what a disappointment! Yes, the fish portion was small (what I had asked for) but the batter surrounding the fish was thick, tasteless, soggy and unpleasantly rubbery. My wife was unable to eat hers at all after one forkful. I was 'forced to' as I had a very short time before leaving for an evening engagement and had no alternative food. Otherwise I would not have eaten mine either. The chips were not the best, and one can only speculate that the fish, at least, may have been left over from the lunchtime frying. I experienced stomach pain that night, which may, or may not, have been connected with the fish and chips. I must say that this was unrepresentative of previous purchases made there and that made the disappointment even more real.

If this is supposed to be the best that Glossop has for fish and chips then I would hate to try the others. The batter was the worst batter I have ever tasted. The amount of oil that was in the batter was unbelievable. If you squeezed the batter between your fingers it just ran on to the pate in a deluge of grease. Peas were cold (and we only live up the road and we drove back) which is inexcusable. Chips OK but just OK.

have been to this chippy on other visits to Glossop and was impressed with the food quality; however on our latest visit the quality was appalling with out a doubt the worst i have ever had, Yorkshire fish cake without the spud content? and chips that should not have been let out of the shop; in defense the weather was bad and trade slow but under those circumstances he should have thrown the product, we wont be going back

Having lived in Glossop for the best part of 40 years I've concluded that GFB is indeed the best chippy in Glossop. After bobbing in randomly as a teenager for a chip butty, I've now started to go in for fish and chips all 'round for the family when we feel like a chippy treat night. GFB is run by a very friendly husband and wife duo with hired help at busy periods. The chippy serves all the usual suspects for a traditional English chippy..i.e. haddock, cod, Pie's, sausages, mushy peas etc. The chips are great. Proper chippy chips....not too greasy and cooked just great. The fish I've always opted for is the Cod which is usually large and very good. Portions are usually slightly too big for one person which is always good! Small fish can also be bought for little ones. The only thing that stops a 5* rating, is that although the fish is very good....it's just not quite as good as a coastal chippy where the fish is super fresh. That given, we always go here. Just check frying times before you go....not open at night....only open early evenings and lunch. The prices are as expected...no big surprises. A very good chippy to be recommended.

Best fish and chips we've had in a long time in terms of both quality and quantity. The fish was fresh and cooked to order, and if you ask for a large fish, make sure you're either very hungry or sharing! Highly recommended after a long day's walking!

I called in here to get some chips, i ended up with fish chips and peas. An enormous piece of freshly cooked haddock a big portion of peas and loads of chips. Itcwas enough for 2 but i managed to eat most of it as it was very good. Next time maybe just have fish and peas, I noticed they did a small fish too. I will be back.

You could not ask for more, the owners and staff are friendly and helpful. Great with kids (even ours!) You can eat in or take out. I am not sure that there is any way to improve on plaice or cod in batter and deep fried potatoes. There is certainly nowhere that I have been that does them better.

They use proper fish (cod, haddock or plaice), the batter is well seasoned and crispy. The chips are perfect, not too soggy. They always seem to have fish ready to go which is something I always look for from a chippy. Friendly and reasonable prices. Easily the best chip shop in Glossop.

Honestly some of the best chips I've had in a long time. Crispy, flavoursome, good sized portion - and the curry sauce was particularly tasty too. And in speaking to the owner it is clearly his passion to expertly craft his frying. He was also friendly and welcoming, giving us recommendations for the local area. If you prefer a soggy chip that sticks to the paper then maybe give it a miss. But if you like a crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, double-fried chip, then I can heartily recommend The Master Fryer.
