Description on website is totally different to the experience we had. The manager was not in residence, there was no proper cook/chef so there was no food being served, not to speak I'll of Donnie who was left in charge as he was so helpful and friendly but the breakfast he cooked was inedible. Room not up to much shower had absolutely no pressure was just a trickle. We booked in for 4 days left after 2. If manager knew this was going to be how our stay was going to be he should have cancelled as we expected a bed and breakfast that served food this was just a pub with rooms. I would never recommend this place to anyone

Had a drink in the Bar prior to getting fish and chips from a van outside the Glenavon. Unfortunately the van closed before we ordered food so we were left hungry. We decided to have another drink whilst debating what to do about food when the barman offered to get something for us even though they were not serving food. He gave us huge bowls of delicious thick soup with hunks of bread, and didn't even charge us for it. We had a brilliant evening, great beer and company. You will get a warm and friendly welcome in this great Scottish pub.

Stayed a week in Tomintoul and it was so good to be in a village with a proper local pub. The landlord Graham has only been there since Feb 2022 so disregard bad reviews from before then, he's working his arse off to turn this place round and make this pub a warm, friendly welcoming place. We dropped by several times in the week we were there and were always greeted with warmth and a good array of beverages behind the bar.

For such a great price you get a very homely and warm experience at the Glenavon. The host, Graham, and hostess, Lucy the dog, are absolute wonders in conversation and company. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, you only have to mind that the water pressure isn't 100%! We were greeted and made very welcome, bar and atmosphere very friendly and the food was wholehearted and great priced too. The pool table is free to play, and the location of the Glenavon is right in the heart of the town square. Either side of the town provide walks through the beautiful Glenlivet estate and an amazing children's playarea opposite the wigwams. I'd highly recommend Tomintoul as a quiet settlement alternative to Aviemore, which is only 35minute drive away (and a gorgeous drive through the mountains at that!) There are some perfect places for pictures and watching the sun set, all to come back home to the Glenavon.

Nice pub in the pretty village of Tomintoul but the food is an absolute disgrace. Literally everything came out of a frozen packet. I ordered a venison stew, veg and chips for myself and my other half had the steak pie with veg and chips. Venison stew was as dry as an old leather boot and whoever made it (days beforehand, I can only assume) threw far too much pepper in it to disguise its blandness, rendering it inedible. The chips and parsnips came from a frozen packet and the veg, sprouts and carrots, were boiled to an inch of their lives and were utterly watery and tasteless. Stew was £13.50 and steak and ale pie £10.50, so profit aplenty here for these shysters. We only came here as the place we were staying in said this food was the better of the 2 pubs in the village that served food. Would dread to have tasted the food in the other place. Would not return here at all.

Husband ordered a steak and said it was cooked to perfection, I ordered the chilli with extra jalapeños ( which the dish needed as was very mild and not very tomatoey) the rice was nicely cooked. My dairy allergy was catered to for the main course but no dessert available, hubby had sticky toffee pudding which he said was fabulous, the bill was £52 for food and drinks which I think was very reasonable. The initial impression of the internal layout of the lounge/seating area is confusing. The lounge/bar accommodation appears to comprise three linked but separate areas, none of which offers a comfortable area in which to relax. The visitor has the option of being in a corridor-like space, or alternatively enjoying the benefit of a first class view of the snooker/pool table, which dominates the larger room. The wood panelled decor, combined with the energy saving lighting unwittingly contributes to the venue's sustainability co-efficient, but does not assist in providing sufficient lighting to read the menu. The sole bar server could not cope with the number of customers, resulting in a singular queue lining up single file in front of the bar, obstructing the waitresses tending the tables, who tried valiantly to serve food to customers seated in the passageways, and obstructing potential customers attempting to make order of the situation. That aside, the food was modest, but well-prepared and probably represented good value for money.Like most things in Tomintoul, which admittedly must have a very short tourist season, the experience could probably be best described as well-intended, honest and makeshift.

We had the pleasure of dining here twice. This is prime pub grub territory, food that always pleases hungry travelers. Due to driving the rental car, I did forgo sampling any of the alcoholic beverages. We sampled a wide variety of dishes, Haggis to fish & chips to burgers. Food was always served hot and delicious. We would return again.

Good food cooked to order with decent portion sizes. Nice friendly atmosphere within the public area.

We were lost and needed to orient ourselves to find our B&B before it got late, and decided to stop in Tomintoul for a bite. The first restaurant we tried had limited hours and would not be serving till six. The one across the street likewise, and the eastern european receptionist seemed unable to understand when we asked "do you know of another place that is serving now" and kept merely repeating that they would not be open till six. We happened to spot Glen Avon open and serving. That night we had the roast beef and it was lovely, as was the chocolate cake drizzled with hot fudge topping. The service was good as well. We returned the next night and not being overly hungry, ordered a few appetizers. Our idea of prawn cocktail differs radically from theirs - the "prawns" were dime-sized similar to the kind that come in cans and about the same amount, absolutely SMOTHERED in a sauce that to me tasted like mayonnaise with ketchup. The brie with plum sauce was two pieces of deep fried brie, not bad, with what looked and tasted like jam. The cheesy garlic bread was cheesy enough but we are accustomed to it being melted, not just grated on. So they strike out on appetizers, but hit a home run with their roasts and we would recommend ordering the roast of the day. Having criticized in this way I must say we were just happy to find a place in this remote area that was open and serving, and pleasant to be in with its dogs under tables and locals/visitors mingling. I'd go back again but stick to the specials.

As someone one else has pointed out, it’s now called the Spey Inn. Was there earlier this week for lunch as in area and parents recommended it from a visit a year or so ago. It was quiet but we got a friendly welcome from the two members of staff. My parents commented on the size of the menu which has apparently changed and did seemed limited in choices. 3 of us ordered the Cullen Skink soup. It tasted fine but not much fish ands lots of potatoes. Three of us then had sandwiches, the Club sandwich was very good, well filled with bacon, tomato etc and was tasty. Me and my mum both had the egg mayonnaise sandwich. It looked different in that it was 2 whole slices of toast which I thought may have been included in the description. That said I can live with this, however what was very unusual and disappointing was the quantity of filling in these two sandwiches. It appeared that there was a smear of egg mayo as in the quantity of butter you would spread on a slice of bread (and in this case it was spread onto 2 slices of thick toast). Without exaggerating it appeared that 1 egg had been used to fill 2 sandwiches . The salad that accompanied it was nice and the fish and chips the other member of our group had was apparently good. We did mention it to the server who said he’d mention our views to the chef, but it just seemed odd. We also mentioned to a member of staff at an early stage of our visit, that there was no soap in the gents toilets (you could clearly see the soap dispenser was empty when you walked in), however when leaving some time later this had not been rectified, despite the fact the restaurant was not busy. It wasn’t a cheap lunch and it was fairly disappointing overall. Unless this was a one off, don’t think I would return.

Today I used my Brodie gift voucher for Afternoon Tea. My husband and I enjoyed the tastiest freshly made sandwiches, quiche, sausage roll and a variety of sweet treats. Although busy the staff were pleasant and helpful.
