Just been charged £9:30 for a pint of fosters shandy? A bit pricey in my mind. On and off me and the wife have been here a number of times mostly for Sunday lunch but I don't think we will be returning.

Paid a visit today for a Sunday lunch (12 - 4pm). Staff couldn't have been more helpful, with food being served promptly and in a jovial and helpful manner (much thanks to our server on the day, forgive us for not asking your name). The food itself was tasty and generous in variety, given the understandable limitatiins of the Sunday menu. We will no doubt return to this hidden gem, before too many Sundays have elapsed.

We visited for Sunday lunch today, it was absolutely delicious. We had garlic mushrooms to start then my husband had beef and I had lamb, it was hot and fresh it it was a very generous helping. The vegetables were served separately which I love and they also brought a jug of extra gravy without even having to ask. The pub itself is very old and quaint and clean and inviting and the staff were brilliant. We would highly recommend and will definitely be visiting again.

Visited a few months ago, sitting in pool room and had to listen to three local men ( not youths) talking loudly about people on other side of room calling them (scummy scousers) and laughing and joking about them. Called a few weeks later for Sunday lunch, veg served in a separate dish for two people comprised three small pieces of carrot, one piece of broccoli and two small new potatoes...won’t be calling again to eat

We went to this historic local Inn for a Christmas dinner with 19 people. We had a tremendous time and everyone was extremely pleased with their meal. The facility was clean and tidy and well decorated for Christmas. We sat in their separate dining room (attached to the pub but off to one end) which was perfect for us. They had crackers on the table and were very prompt with the meal and service (especially considering it was for 19 people). We will be back again! Their Christmas menu had the traditional roast beef and turkey but also had a tasty seafood lasagna (what I had) and vegetarian curry (which one of our guests had). The portion sizes were generous! On top of this they also had loads of steamed veg. Most went with the 2-course option though they also had a 3-course option.

I decided to treat my family to a last minute meal on a Friday evening. I phoned at 6.20 and was able to reserve a table for 6.45. Upon arrival we were welcomed by a friendly bar lady who, after serving well-priced drinks introduced us to our waitress, who in turn escorted us to our seats. The pub had a very welcoming and warmly feel to it. The menu covers a range of tastes but is a little limited in choice compared to some other places. Having said that, the food when it arrived was magnificent with generous but not over-powering portions. The children’s menu food was of a very high standard too. Food prices are very fair indeed for the quality and amount you get. Our waitress was lovely; efficient, friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. To add to the excellent experience, the Glan yr Afon is dog friendly too. We will certainly be returning frequently in future.

To be honest, for the incredibly low price paid, this was a delight! Quaint, quirky and excellent value. Food freshly cooked, plentiful and again competitively priced. Good wine list... but house Pinot Grigio at £4 for a large glass, was quite simply delicious. Staff friendly and the extra supplement for breakfast is well worth it. Room was clean, had ensuite and I had a great sleep. I loved it!

Visited last Sunday and although it looked a bit like it was going to rain decided to sit outside as we had the dog with us. We ordered Roast Turkey dinner. It came piping hot, lovely slices of meat and lots of nice veg. We ate it all! However, we thought we would order a pudding as well. I had homemade ginger sponge and my husband cherry bakewell sponge. Possibly some of the best puddings we've ever had while dining out! We were extremely full after, but for £11.95 each it was outstanding value. A must visit if we are in the area again!

I can relate with Lloyd J below. We were stupid enough to book a table for 11 at the restauraunt here to celebrate our mother's 70th. As Lloyd also points out, the locals were indeed hostile, and we were served by kids. Our kids weren't sweet. though, but sulky teenagers. The food was nothing short of diabolical. And to cap the evening off a brain-dead local lad went and puched the gents toilet door glass in, which was about 8ft around the corner from where we were sitting. Result: we had to jump over the pool of blood when we visited the toilets. And . . . it gets worse . . . a police forensic team were blocking the corridor when we left collecting samples for DNA testing, we presume. Personally, I was for refusing to pay a penny for the debacle of an evening. But we couldn't find a responsible adult anywhere with whom we could have argued our case. I was embarrassed. It was me that made the booking. Ruined Mum's special birthday.

We spent last weekend in and around Holywell visiting family. On Saturday evening we booked a table for five people too dine at the Glan yr Afon. We had previously lunched there around six months ago and have been visiting the Inn for well over 20 years back in the days when the Owner was a guy called Pepe. The first thing when entering the Inn was that feeling of tumbleweed blowing down an empty street, all eyes were on us from the locals and there were some whispered comments about one or two of us, no we didn't have two heads we were simply dressed smartly for dinner. You know when something is wrong when a laminated single sheet is handed to you 'the menu' and when ushered into the restaurant find that you are the only diners to have booked on a Saturday evening. This place used be hard to get a table some years back now it was empty. Two very sweet waitresses served us but they were just that, sweet kids..... We ordered starters and mains.... we noted at the foot of the laminated menu it stated that 'all our chefs are skilfully trained' well maybe they were trained in KFC or McDonalds because there was absolutely no evidence of that with the food that we were presented with. It was a typical low standard menu offering, gammon and pineapple, lamb shank, steak, scampi ..... hardly a gastro experience and the food was so obviously previously frozen. The steak had no taste whatsoever and we left most of our food on the plates, a sure sign that something was wrong, this prompted no comment from the 'kids' as they asked if we would like desert which of course we declined. It was extremely poor and although we are by no means high diners, left us with a bad taste in our mouths, literally..... I suppose we should have read the signs before ordering as an empty restaurant on a Saturday evening is always a bad sign. The bar staff were friendly enough but the few locals that were drinking there were unwelcoming. I rarely write bad reviews on here and having over 11,000 people check out my comments means that I am not a fussy eater or a bad reviewer just plain honest, and honestly I would say until they learn to do something different and better please don't bother paying a taxi fair to get there because you will be disappointed ..

The Glan yr Afon is a friendly family pub and restaurant just a couple of miles from Holywell. A new chef was appointed a month or so ago and he has updated and expanded the menu. The choice was excellent and the food (chicken and prawn salads) much better than the usual pub type food. We were in a nearby cottage for a week so we made several visits to the pub in that time. We tried various pies (Cock & Bull was the best), Gammon (Jane's favourite), Lasagne, burger and on our last night Beef Curry (Jane did anyway - I had beef and ale pie). No issues with any of the other meals, all very nice but the curry was more like a weak stew according to Jane. I tried a piece and the meat was nice but had no taste and the sauce/rice was watery. I wouldn't have eaten any as in no way was it a curry - even a mild one - but Jane went the British way and didn't complain and just told the waitress it was "disappointing". Beer selection was good although having had three ales all week including Black Sheep Bitter on Friday they just had Flintshire.A disappointing end to the week.

They were not busy so we were hopeful. We ordered the Sunday Roast. We waited 45mins. The Beef was delicious my family told me. I had chosen the lamb. Wrong!!! It was all fat and grissle with a little bit of edible lamb. When we told the waitress she said "The lamb can be iffy so the chef had given me more so I would find some edible meat". We really fancied a pud. Well the wait for that was over 30mins. The dirty plates were left in front of us most of that time. The table across from us was left with dirty dishes.for most of the time we were there. If they were busy I could understand it. They were not.. We will not visit again. Such a shame.
