A smart little country gastropub. Nicely decorated with efficient friendly service. We had two sandwiches for lunch with a bowl of chips. The sarnies were really tasty and well presented. I'm afraid the chips were less good, some being quite hard. That didn't detract from a lovely lunch. Recommended for travellers on your way up to the Lakes.

Myself my husband and our 2 friends returned for 1 night on Fri to celebrate our friends birthday/ retirement. The last time we visited in May 24 we said we would come back . We were not disappointed, so lovely to see Debbie and the staff again, our evening meal and breakfast was delicious, the rooms are clean and bright, bed very comfortable . We will definitely return again.

We stayed at the Gilpin Bridge for two nights whilst visiting Cartmel races. The staff were lovely and the bed was extremely comfortable. However, the shower head was too big for the shower and the grouting was in a poor state. Another minus was the fact that the water in the toilet was at such a high level that my undercarriage was under water whilst sitting on it. There was an extremely limited choice for breakfast but the full English was quite acceptable. We dined in the restaurant on the second evening and my partner enjoyed her scampi and chips. However, I found the rather dry and shrivelled haddock very disappointing but the Biscoff cheesecake for dessert was delicious.

What a superb find! Stopped here as we had to find last minute dog friendly accommodation as we had a poorly relative in hospital in the area, and could not have been made to feel more welcome! Sophie greeted us so warmly that we discarded our second option we were considering and decided to stay here! The locals are all so friendly and made a fuss of our little dog (special thanks to John!;-) the food is brilliant - high quality ingredients - and the owners super friendly! Our room was immaculate and breakfast spot on, we will most definitely be back! Thank you to all who took such good care of us at a pretty stressful time and good luck to the lovely Sophie and family with her upcoming baby! :-) Happy New year to you all! xx

We visited on a Sunday as a family of 5. Unaware there was only the roast on offer, it wasn’t an issue as we were hungry and thought if that’s all that was on offer it would at least be quick, how wrong were we! We watched everyone around us eat starters, then get mains, we then got our only course after everyone else had been served, the meal took an hour to arrive! I’ve made tissue from scratch quicker than that! Not so much of an apology or a complimentary drink. The roast was ok, bland but edible and definitely not worth the £16 price tag. Never again.

We came as part of a group having Sunday lunch. The place is quite an old fashioned and traditional British pub. Hadn’t been there in 20+ years and not a lot has changed. I had a nut roast which was nothing special. A couple of beef eaters said they had found gristle in their cuts. Pudding was OK but we left disappointed. The pub has so much potential but seems a little tired.

After a trip to the lake District we was driving home and happened to spot this pub set back from the road. So please we called in. A lovely pub with great facilities. A small play park to keep the kids happy and a good selection of beer and wine at a reasonable price. I didn't eat hear but after speaking to a few people they highly recommended it. Already impressed, the jewel in the crown had to be the barmaid called Sophia who was South African. She is probably the most friendly, helpful person I've met in a long time. Nothing was too much for her and she made us all feel so welcome. Infact she was so nice, even though we live 30 mins away we are going to return next weekend we had such a nice time. Many thanks Sofia.

Food overpriced for what was largely inedible- the two burgers we ordered had salad in them that was going off, the chips tasted strange and the mayo tasted off. The atmosphere was awkward and the servers were unprofessional. The ONE server who actually served us (and everyone else) out of the 4 that were working and seemed free but were busy audibly and visually gossiping was nice and caring enough but only just. It’s a shame because it’s in a nice location and is really convenient.

Family visit to the Gilpin Bridge yesterday and I'm pleased to say it was as excellent as usual . Lovely roaring Log fire on arrival and we managed to get a table right next to it. Great atmosphere in this well kept and managed country pub. The staff team led by Debbie are very attentive and professional and the service was good, Debbie always goes the extra mile for you. Food was amazing as usual . 2 of us choose the roast Sunday dinners, they were fabulous. Huge portions they even boxed some of it up for us . The other choices off the menu were equally as good. The desserts were fabulous, dad said it was the best sticky toffee pudding he had ever had and my husbands ice cream sundae was so big I took photos and sent them to friends . We will be back soon. Definitely recommend.

Been to the restaurant a number of times but never on a Sunday. The choices were a vegetarian option and beef or turkey with all the trimmings, at very reasonable prices, must say the quality of the meat was good and a good selection of vegetables. The service very good as always by the time we left every table was full. Waited around 20 minutes for the meal which was fine, well worth a visit.

Reception staff were pleasant, but out of their depth No too sure what we were supposed to do, having driven 8 hours, with a dog and a evening meal locally booked, so we stayed Reception and our room smelt of damp so much Hotel is so very tired, chipped paint, stains on wall, nothing felt clean, shower was tepid, whole place is about a £50 standard hotel Breakfast was edible, but by this stage we just wanted to leave Asked on departure for a reduction due to the smell, this was refused and lady said, " well you stayed", not really the point! Hotel needs to consider if they should actually be open with the damp and smell

Stayed two nights whilst on business trip in area. Found the staff very friendly and welcoming. The room was spacious, clean and tidy, heating wasn’t on but once I discovered the free standing heater hidden in the wardrobe the room soon warmed up. I thought the single sachet of shampoo/shower gel they supplied for a two nights stay was as a bit stingy, otherwise no complaints. The place is definitely a food pub, I stayed midweek and there was very little atmosphere in the Public Bar which made for two early nights. The Pub is fairly isolated, so no real option for going anywhere else if wanting to fill in the evening, unless you’re prepared to drive. I found the food to be basic, but filling, standard pub quality. Note that Breakfast is not served until 08:30am which is worth bearing in mind when planning your trip, especially if business related. If I have cause to be staying in the area again I would consider booking again though.

Really friendly welcome on arrival to this Inn - I think some reviewers forget it is not a hotel but an Inn/Pub So is quirky with little annexes and mismatched furniture - not to everyone’s taste but if clean and comfortable....We had a pleasant stay,we found the Inn to be very clean, for those who note such things the carpets throughout the lower floors looked new to me. No fluff or rips etc!Our room via stairs and a few corridors was very clean and the en-suite (via a sliding door )while dated was fine too. We took our own towels but the ones here looked ok.The bed and pillows were comfy and surprisingly the brushed cotton fitted sheet was cool in the heatwave as was the room with the window opening on to a view of statics. We had a restful night following a delicious meal - the portions are huge, we should’ve just had a main meal and forgone the black pudding stack starter / couldn’t do that.Drinks are comparable with other pubs in the area.We woke to the sound of sheep and a cockerel.Breakfast was relaxed - help yourself to juice and cereal then choose from a variety of breakfast options, again the food was lovely and piping hot.All in All we found The Gilpin Bridge Inn excellent value and we would visit if in the area again.Friendly StaffGreat hot and tasty foodExcellent Value

Stopped here for a meal on a rainy Sunday. Opted for the Sunday roast which was either beef or lamb, opted for the lamb, what a good choice. Came with proper roasties, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potato and a side dish of veg which was leeks, red cabbage and heritage carrots. Was served with lashings of gravy which is a bonus in my book. Only thing I thought was odd was that it came with a sage and onion stuffing portion which I didn't think went with lamb. Wasn't too keen on the mash either but that was the only thing I didn't like. Had the 2 courses deal and had the roulade which was served with ice cream and strawberry sauce, again was delish. The manager and staff were very friendly and I will definitely come here again !

On arrival we all noted the rather off putting smell as we entered and nearly chose to leave before ordering . Also that it was quiet cold inside. Should of heeded our first impressions.I was hoping since change of ownership i was going to be impressed. Was really looking forward to the meal. Firstly the menu choice is very limited. Two of us opted for the roast beef. This was served with three small roast potatoes some mash and a Yorkshire pudding. The beef portion was a joke ...not sure if they had run out and split one portion between two of us or what. Three tiny bits that would of struggled to make a whole slice. Small dish of veg served separate. Tasted OK but just too little for the 9.95 price tag.We also ordered scampi and chips and chicken gouijons and chips. The chips where still hard in the middle. The scampi was at best a budget brand. The chicken was well over cooked. Tough and stringy. They both came with a side salad that seemed a bit limp and uninspiring. The meals where ridiculously over priced for the quality and quantity. The owners need to have a look at what you can get elsewhere for less and price themselves accordingly. We usually visit Romneys and the carvery roast is far superior as is the rest of the menu and slightly cheaper. Also no atmosphere at all.

Very disappointing, won’t be rushing back.We had Sunday lunch at Gilpin Bridge Inn at Bridge End Cumbria today 13th March 2016. The menu advertised outside was not available, only a limited menu on Sundays. Service was not the best and the food ranged from, at best, average (Sunday Roast) to tasteless (fish). Would Not Recommend.

We visited Gilpin Bridge this Sunday and arrived shortly after noon. To begin with, there weren't many people there, but it soon filled up. The menu was quite varied with several choices for each of 3 courses. The lunch was plentiful with the vegetables served separately. The deserts were gorgeous. Our only complaint would be that it was a bit chilly, but we were there on one of the coldest days this year. We'll definitely be going back.

We had lunch here. There is (currently) no menu on their website so we had no idea what to expect. It turned out that the lunchtime menu is very limited and it's what might be described as typical old fashioned pub food; gammon, battered fish, Scampi etc. I think everything came with chips and apart from peas and one vegetarian option there weren't many vegetables in sight. The decor is a bit spartan and the beer choice severely limited. Having said all that, the food was all well prepared and nicely presented and the service was OK too. We didn't see an evening menu so perhaps it's more interesting than the choice we had. I doubt we'll be back to find out however.

the gilpin inn restaurant is very welcoming and the decor and surroundings is to a very good standard staff were very helpful but one criticism the food was not very good to be honest two meals out the four were not very good (RUBBERY BURGERS) and slightly over priced for all four meals apart from that was ok.

We stopped here as we wanted somewhere different to eat after spending the week in Bowland Bridge. My mother in law said hello to the barmaid and the barmaid seemed to dissappear without saying anything. She came back and told us we could have a table for four but would need to have vacated the table by 8. As it was only 630 this was fine by us. The menu was great with lots of choices. Our food all arrived hot and we had no complaints other than the vegetarian burger my husband ordered was clearly a freezer job and not homemade. We ordered pudding which was also satisfactory. The toilets could have been better, with scruffy doors and no handcream. This was not the worst experience we have bad in a pub but was certainly not the best either. There are plenty of other better places to eat in the south lakes.

We had had a long day at Cartmel Races ,we were hungry ,yet we fancied something other than run of the mill pub food . We called at the Gilpin the food was excellent we opted for a Cajun chicked salad which came with crust roll it was delicious ,without being overpowering , and at £ 7.95 was good value . The staff were very polite and friendly we noticed that some items on the men u were a little more expensive than other pubs in the area , But what we had was presented well and was delicious . Good service Good Food and Good Price . Will call again soon

We were driving home from Scotland to Sussex and were fed up with eating on the service way. We turned off towards Lake Windermere and decided to stop here. The best choice we have made for ages, even thought it took us out of our way by half hour. The Gilpin Bridge Inn was very welcoming and the people serving were polite attentive and friendly. We decided on a starter and main dinner. My husband had the potato and leek soup which was tasty and I had the pate and toast both turned up and were large portions. We ordered the steak and ale pie, chips and peas it turned up with its own gravey bowl and a little bowl of peas on the side. This was the best pie we have had for ages big chunks of meat which melted in your mouth. Again the portions were ample. Other people eating were of the same opinion as us the food was incredible! Best pub/inn food I have had for along time. Highly recommend this place to eat or even just for a drink and a game of pool. Will definatly be stopping here again.

Arrived shortly after 8pm .was immediately met by a woman who approached us and told me and my husband we could not have a meal because they were too busy as they had a table of 10 in.We could see there was empty tables but they still said we could not eat there.I am amazed how this establishment continues.Within 5 minutes we rang another local pub who were more than happy to cater for our needs. I am bewildered that you're establishment in such a competitive market fails to adhere to customers needs.

We arrived in lovely sunshine but were disappointed to find that contrary to the impression given in the advertisement by Lakeland Retreats of sitting on your decking enjoying the sun there is no sun as the Lawns is surrounded by high trees making the interior constantly dark. You have to put the lights on for your breakfast and if you eat in later in the day then also. My partner decided to have a bath the first night but unfortunately contrary to the management company's assertion that there's a constant supply of hot water the hot water ran out and the water turned cold. This happened twice as it did to our neighbours in the adjoining Lakeland Retreats property. We normally have a cooked breakfast on a Sunday but we were appalled to find that the two frying pans supplied were pitted with rust and unusable. Finally as the season turned from summer to autumn the evenings got a little nippy. We tried to turn up the storage radiators but found that the controls are blocked by wooden brackets screwed over the radiators so you can't use them. A beautiful area but we won't be using Lakeland Retreats again if this is the standard they aspire to!

Very enjoyable meal on Friday evening following a hike. We had looked at the exciting menu in the morning but didn't want to commit ourselves by booking a table beforehand and rushing back. Relieved that they had a spare table . My husband had the leek confit as a starter which was plentiful and tasty. We both had the seabream which came with new potatoes, olives and spinach. Despite the high cost of the ingredients you didn't feel that they skimped on the portion. 2 nice pieces of fish each, plenty of olives and spinach. We benefited of their special offers, £1 off per pint from 16.30 to 1900. I have no hesitation to recommend this place. The rating is 4 out of 5 as the dinning room is a bit dark but the food was top marks

Although I live in HK, I do enjoy quite a variety of fish and chips as I got a specialty shop right downstairs (and I hope this support the rest of my comments) The shop doesn't look cool. It was a small shop. But the smell was great, there was no oily feel nor smell, despite an open kitchen design. That's why I immediately start my order. We had fishes, black pudding and onion rings. The fish is awesome, no oily and heavy covering. My wife is very sensitive to oily thing but she immediately accept the whole fish. The fish is freshly made and this is also a bonus point. The onion rings surprised us, it is at the right point of camarelized. The portion of black pudding is superb, if you like it, you should get my combo. I recommend anyone to try this. I read comments saying the dishes are overpriced. But I surely get a full tummy after spending 24 pounds here.
