Lovely Hotel with an interesting history and characterful restaurant. This time we were seated in the old dining room as the main eating area was being done up but nevertheless it did not detract from the eating experience. Our meals were excellent and freshly prepared for us, my beer battered fish and chips was enormous, so much so I could not eat it all- shame. 10% added as service charge which is common place these days. Recommended.

Brought wrong orders, members of the table were brought their food after everyone had finished. Sides weren’t brought out with mains. The food was extremely poor and would never go back nor recommend to anyone. The food that was brought out was vile and the service was awful too.

Very quiet place. The whole restaurant was empty besides two of us Service was impeccable from a young waitress who was polite with good customer service. However they need to have more vegetarian options for starters and mains. I had halloumi baguette with couple of roasted veg in it. Halloumi tasted very dry and chewy. Shame on selection and quality of food. Rolls were warm from outside but cold inside. Probably microwaved. Place and service is nice, if only they improved the quality of vegetarian food.

We booked the restaurant for the afternoon for a "private dining" event - a family birthday party. The building, gardens and grounds are interesting and attractive, and we were able to start with a very pleasant outdoor drinks reception. The restaurant itself has an attractive traditional ambience. The food was good, and the service was excellent, with cheerful and helpful staff throughout.

I have visited many times. My sister got married here; I once held my baptism lunch here and I've walked around the beautiful gardens on many occasions. It was partly because I was feeling a bit nostalgic that I thought I would recreate a visit I had when the kids were just 5, 8 and 10. It was a summer day and we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon tea in the garden. My recent experience couldn't have been more different or more disappointing. Firstly the booking was by phone and I was asked to leave a £10 deposit per person, which I found a bit odd - surely a booking is enough without taking a deposit? On arrival, a friendly waitress quickly took me to an available table, offering a choice of two areas - all good. The interior looked the same as I remembered, the only change as far as I could see was management, as the hotel is now run by Best Western. The service was stilted, but this is because there were only two people serving, one of which seemed a little inexperienced. I had planned to enjoy an afternoon tea for 3 but on arrival decided to choose the fixed price menu (2 or 3 courses for approx £30+). I also chose one full afternoon tea (£32). The fixed price menu was ok, huge portions so relatively good value. However, this restaurant is far more expensive than it was previously. There are lots of signs that the owners are trying to cut costs wherever possible. 1. very inexperienced staff 2. no tableclothes on the tables 3. use of paper doilies on serving plates 4. photocopied menus (stapled) rather than a proper menu All of the above however, could be ignored/forgiven if the food is tip-top and in line with the price. This is my main criticism. The food, on the whole, was average. the breads served cold, the main courses were ok, but felt more like pub grub than a quality dining experience. The dessert was ok. On the plus side, the portions were huge for the main course and dessert, but I would argue they were far too big. My main criticism is reserved for afternoon tea. It was woeful! 3 slivers of sandwich, 3 tiny desserts, a savoury thing that I scarcely know how to describe - it had aubergine and courgette on it and was salty! the scones (1 plain and one with fruit) were ok. I did however feel that the price did not justify the size. I was offered no choice of teas (english breakfast) and again it felt like the restaurant was more interested in maximising the profit margin than offering a reasonable product for the guest. Note that previous reviews on the afternoon tea are for a different menu. When I looked at the photos prior to my booking, what I received in no way resembled what others got more than a year ago... When my bill arrived they had added on 10% service without my approval. I did query whether I had been served the half tea rather than the full and the duty manager (Richard) was called to discuss this with me. Unfortunately he was very rude and turned bright red when explaining with some force that the menu stated what was included and that was what I got. No he said that was not the half tea. He said that they changed the afternoon tea menu a year ago. He brought the menu and asked me to read it, however, the menu doesn't tell you that the cakes are about as big as a thumbnail and that the sandwiches so small they equate to 1 slice to bread. They served a macaron that when I offered to share it with my daughter, was too small to cut in half so I got the lid and she got the bottom! It was laughable. So I agree with what other reviewers have written. It's true, this lovely little local gem has gone downhill. I think offering such a mean portion will lose them customers but that's what happens when you put profit before customers. + Beautiful grounds Stunning house Calm atmosphere Interesting local heritage (Gilbert and Sullivan) Fixed lunch is ok, but not great - Food average at best Poor customer service - duty manager was rude Overpriced menu Afternoon tea was very poor - many better choices available Service - amateur. I had to ask the waiter to clean the table and he then swept the food onto the floor and left it there! Yes another peel of laughter from my children, they couldn't believe it! What with that and spraying presumably cleaning fluid on the table , wiping around the plates and leaving them in situ - presumably so that we could eat from plates infused with cleaning liquid - was pythony'esque. As long as you aren't expecting anything great from the food a trip to Grims Dyke is still worth it. I would focus on drinks and a walk around the garden. If you're up for a laugh then go full Fawlty Towers and sit back and enjoy... I did call to make a complaint but no one got back to me. Says it all really

This is the first time I’ve been back here since the pandemic and boy, has it changed. I used to use this place to meet up with a couple of work colleagues; we’d do work with a laptop (using their wifi) in one of the spare rooms like the morning room followed by one of their prix fixe menus which offered good value for money. However, since the pandemic, they now take a deposit of £10 per head. I don’t like this, but I also didn’t get this refunded even though I gave them a three week notice of cancellation. Instead they say the deposit goes towards your next visit which for me, wasn’t until three months later. Another new charge was the use of the morning room - now £50 an hour! - instead we hovered in the hall trying to do some work on a laptop before lunch. The lunch wasn’t good either. Portions too big and didn’t taste great. All four of us left food on our plates from our main course. The fish and chips were nuclear hot and one of our party had a very uncomfortable time as burning hot food went down his throat. Both people who had the fish and chips didn’t like the batter of the fish and then waiting for the food to cool, found it went cold very quickly after. I had the prawn starter but didn’t enjoy the taste of the sauce and it was too big a portion size. Served in a bowl, it was impossible to use a knife and fork to cut up the food. When I mentioned this to the waitress she said it was because of the presentation and hard to make a pile of prawns and gnocchi look good on a plate. I had the burger which was far too thick and not seasoned well, so I left some of that. The burger was not in a brioche bun which they put in the menu. The desserts were nice though. Food needs to be less portion wise and more fine dining rather than country pub fare. You are have a great setting with a wonderful history. Make the food match the surroundings.

I placed an order with the manager and received a different order that was £4 more. The manager was rude and defensive and didn't want to change my order. After arguing the case, he gave me what I had originally asked for and still wanted to overcharge me. I again had to complain and was finally refunded without an apology. I later heard him apologising to another table for taking the wrong order. I didn't appreciate being spoken to like a 2yr old. Terrible service and basic food.

My husband suprised me with a return visit to the beautiful Grims Dyke hotel building 28 years after we spent our wedding night here. The Gilbert Restaurant is situated in the main manor house and is in keeping with this fine building. Yes, perhaps some of the decor is a little worn in places but the ambience and grandness of the room more than compensates. What is most notable is the excellent, friendly service from all staff. Our coats were taken without fuss and we were shown to our table. Excellent service from beginning to end. Food was excellent and beautifully presented. I liked that produce is locally sourced and we were told at the beginning which items were no longer available. The wild mushroom pie was excellent! Drinks were very reasonably priced. We were delighted by the added touch of a personalied pudding wishing us a happy anniversary- very thoughtful. One thing we noticed was the fixed service charge was only 10% which we felt was excellent value for the lovely service we recieved. We've been to many places where service is 15 or even 17.5% and the staff are not half as professional. I guess the management leave it to, the discretion of their customers to reward service beyond the set amount if they feel it is warranted- which it certainly was in our case. We will be back and wont leave it 28 years this time. Thank you.

Starting with the positives New menu etc and new chef I think The starters and main course were delicious no complaints the deserts were ok a bit limited but preferred the old style ones which were wonderful these were a bit big messy and dry. New this visit no offer to take our coats had to ask and also no offering of bread had to ask love the brown fruit bread which I got. But got the impression this is now not the norm. We were fine with the price no problem. Entertainment was a nice thought but a bit old fashioned and the gentlemen could have dressed up a bit being valentines music was fine. We used to get a gift on valentines evening a decent box of chocs but this time was a very small love hearts pack os sweets. A bit immature. As we visit about 4 to 6 times a year we do notice the changes. A nice touch however at being recognised in the bar area.

Not been back to the Brasserie and Girl for quite some time, since before the Great Western take over! The decor hasn’t changed but the menu has, and not in my mind for the better. The food choice isn’t great but the service was good, even though they weren’t aware I’d asked for a table choice when booking. The whole place could stand brightening/cheering up. The triple cooked chips weren’t great, and the coffee, Cappuccino's weren’t... more like a flat white. However everything else was fine. Just a shame in an area that could stand more upmarket restaurants, GW chose to go the other way and make it “medium” but not cheaper prices?? £110 three course for two; On the 14th, there was a pianist/singer (not so much of the singer though!!) Entertaining... and lower lighting might have helped the ambience.

Such a pity. A lovely and historic building where WS Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan used to live, and a dining hall atmospherically Victorian. They should hire a chef with the skill to emulate Simpsons in the Strand with traditional Victorian fare. Unfortunately the food is very hit and miss, and we've been here a few times over the years. Tonight was one of the worst experiences. I hesitate to criticise the food, because it may be that there is a European country somewhere which has this sort of food in its restaurants and people like it. Overdone rubbery duck, a heap of mashed potatoes with fragments of duck in it, a barely cooked leek, some carrots. Expensive for what it is. As for the service, it was very slow and inattentive. We wondered if all the serving staff were on work experience rather than actual employees. They liked to gossip with each other. They forgot things. When a plate of butter is put in front of you, I think you do normally expect some bread as well. None was forthcoming, so we asked for some and were offered one undercooked and rather stale roll and some sliced bread that was probably fresh the day before. We had to remind them to bring the side order of chips (no, I don't believe they were triple cooked), and the side order of sweet potato chips, and the mayo dip (they had run out of mayo) and the other dips. There were few other diners and it was a Friday night. They need to get their act together. I can't fault the decor and furniture but they need a better chef and better serving staff.

Grimsdyke was the home of W.S. Gilbert of Gilbert & Sullivan fame. He lived in this Gothic revival and late-Elizabethan house (dating from the 1870s) after he bought it in 1890. He was there until his death from drowning in his own lake in 1911, after he saved a young girl from a similar fate. The house is now a hotel with many attractions from G & S musical evenings, murder mystery dinners, family fun days, comedy nights and matinee teas and tours. The restaurant is called Gilbert's and is a comfortable and attractive place to dine, overlooking the gardens. We tried the table d'hote menu and were well pleased. You might think that with its history Gilbert's would offer traditional English food, but no, it has as eclectic a menu as you are likely to find anywhere. We enjoyed starters of Beef teriyaki, strips of the meat lightly cooked and served with a salad of bean shoots and radishes, while the Wild Mushrooms on sourdough bread with a poached egg atop proved to be really delicious. The Cajun chicken was quite piquant but not overly hot with a crispy bacon and avocado salad. My Teriyaki coley was a nice piece of fish crisped up with teriyaki sauce and perched on a tower of crushed potatoes with asparagus and tenderstem broccoli and a vierge sauce. We could also have had Wild mushroom pie or Aloo gobi curry with cumin rice. Desserts of Chocolate brownie & cherries with ice cream, and the Mascarpone & raspberry crème brulee were truly excellent. A great place to visit and a terrific three-course lunch for under £20. Highly recommended.

I came for a dinner to the restaurant. It was quite busy and there were two people from the staff. So it took little bit longer to take an order but it wasn't a problem. Staff was very caring and nice. A nice girl, I think she was Louise or Lucia, was very warm, took care of me. Also, manager, I assume, Douvydas was super nice. Always asked is my meal was good, do I need anything else. Food was awesome. I have got duck salad for my starter and lamb for the main. Started was amazing, duck was super crispy and portion was really good. I could even take it as my main next time. Because I couldn't finish my actual main and haven't good space for dessert. So as a person who doesn't eat much, I found portions really good. Prices are not the cheapest ones but food quality is worth for that. Service level was great and staff were very helpful. Had a 3 course meal from the Festive menu as I was attending with work colleagues for our Christmas lunch. Firstly, the location is off the beaten track. Very secluded and the only way to get there is by car. There is no published transport nearby. However, it's this sort of location that adds a bit of mystery to the place. There is enough parking. The restaurant area is a bit small. Decor could also be much more modern. Not sure why I thought of Alfred Hitchcock when I arrived at the location but anywayz more should be done to modernise the restaurant area. Prawn starter was ok but wished it was more for the price paid. Not too sure what was going on with the turkey meal but the meat definitely taste processed and looked so as well. For desert I have 3 scoops of ice-cream and that was very tasty. Didn't melt very quickly so that was great. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have a quiet lunch. We visited Gilbert's restaurant, part of the Grimsdyke hotel in Old Redding, for a celebratory meal. What a celebration it was! The food was exquisite, the service - especially from Traivon - was impeccable, and the ambience was just right. There was no loud noise, guests were seated far enough from each other to make the experience intimate and special. There were lots of little touches that made our visit one to remember - the amuse bouches, the home made bread, the palate cleansing sorbet between courses, the glass of champagne because we were celebrating, the attentive but unobtrusive waiting staff - it was just all round fantastic. We actually got married there a few years ago and the staff remembered us, which was really lovely. Definitely a place to go for a celebration or if you want to have an amazing meal without breaking the bank. Have been to this restaurant a number of times over a few years but was very disappointed when I had dinner there recently. The starter was ok, I ordered liver pate which came with two small pieces of toast and chutney. The main course was a disaster, the menu described it as sea bass with coconut cream, curry leaf potatoes, courgettes and spinach. This was not a cheap course at £17-00 and a small piece of sea bass was served with small portions of vegetables. There was nothing that tasted anything like coconut and, in fact, the sauce tasted of curry which did not go well with the sea bass. I had asked for the curry leaf potatoes to be replaced by dauphinoise potatoes but did not expect to have a curry sauce, which was supposed to be coconut!!?? I return the dish and asked for NO sauce. A new dish was supplied to me and the courgettes were undercooked, the fish was over peppered. When I complained to the waiter, he said the chef had said that he had given me the undercooked courgettes because the fish was ready to be served. I was not offered a reduction in the price nor, was I offered a complimentary dessert or coffee. Prices have soared since my last visit and I will not be recommending this restaurant to my friends, and will think more than twice before I revisit this place.

Staying in the hotel so naturally, I would make use of the restaurant for breakfast. Set in the main part of the hotel a short walk from the accommodation. One of my pet hates is getting to a restaurant and not really knowing the protocol of whether you wait to be seated or sit down. There was no sign to tell you what to do. It takes someone 5 minutes with a computer, printer, and laminator to create a sign saying 'please take a seat'. I was staying for two nights and on both mornings was less than impressed with the service. Apart from one shining star, the waiters were just polite with next to no personality. No good morning, no friendly welcome, just sauntered over and took the breakfast order and that was it.On the second morning, they had a lovely friendly young lady who smiled, said good morning, how are you etc. This is how it should be. A real credit to the team and someone the others should learn from. The actual breakfast was cooked to order and was excellent. Piping hot with poached eggs being perfectly cooked. Nearly all the components are present for a great breakfast experience i.e. great room, and great product. You just need to up the service.

I have to recommend their weekday set lunch menu. Excellent value at £15.95 for 2 courses and £19.95 for 3 courses. There is a choice of 4 starters, 5 mains, and 4 desserts. I had the timbale of crab with cucumber & guacamole, followed by roast fillet of sea bass with spinach, lemon scented potatoes, green beans, shitake mushrooms and caper dressing. I rounded this off with raspberries creme brulee. Every mouthful of each course was a joy. Just wish I lived nearer as I would certainly be a regular visitor.

Although within the grounds of the Grimsdyke hotel the formal restaurant has a separate entrance and doesn't feel connected at all, it's a night out for residents too. We had the duck as starter and lamb as main, cant recommend highly enough, exquisite food at a sensible price plus a nice wine list as well. 10 out of 10.

Went with a friend for afternoon tea. Firstly they tried to put us in the dark dingy space within the fireplace. When we refused to be sat in the naughty corner, they tried to put us in the corner next to a large group of 18 noisy people. This was despite they had numerous empty tables laid for 4 people. We decided to leave, then suddenly a whole empty room was made available, and all to ourselves. PERFECT I hear you say. NO! we ordered our foods, a cream tea, when it came it certainly wasn’t freshly made, the sandwiches were stale, fillings almost invisible and for the first time in my life I was served Cucumber skin in a cheese and cucumber sandwich, with no cucumber flesh. The jam and cream pots had be used before and not washed before being and refilled for our use. There was a jam finger print in the cream pot. We had to go to,the bar to order more tea. No one came near or by, until it was time to pay, then the staff fell over themselves. They asked if everything was OK, when we said “no” they left without asking what the problem was.We will NEVER go there again. We have been in large get groups before and it was OK. Don’t go in pairs.

Myself and my family had booked to go here for afternoon tea as it was my mother in laws birthday. From day one of booking it on the phone it had not been the most pleasant experience. We arrived at 1pm as booked, and we were greeted by one of the head waiters. He asked my details and informed me that I was too early as I was booked in at 3:30. I explain how this was in correct as I had a confirmation phone call the evening before and clarified that it was booked for 1. He continue to go on about how his booking sheet was saying something different and then huffed at me and said “oh don’t worry it’s not a problem”. If it wasn’t such a big problem then why go on about it?!? We sat down to find a dead fly in my tea cup. All waiters and waitresses spoke in their own language constantly and making everyone feel uncomfortable as though they were discussing us. Food arrived and can’t fault the tea it was lovely and very very filling. At the end we paid, part cash and part card. We were due £10 change. This did not arrive. When I approached the subject with the waiter, he looked confused. Went off to speak to his colleague again in his own language and then the waitress gave us an unpleasant look, clearly of frustration. Both the waiter and waitress then went off and continued to serve another table. Whilst we were left sitting there for a further 10 mins, the waitress came over with our change stating “she was distracted and forgot to give us our change”. We got up to leave and both staff members turned their back and didn’t even say goodbye to us. We were offered to take our leftover cakes with us, which they kindly squashed for us in a bag. They were inedible once at home. Horrible experience, took the niceness out of the reason why we were there and made us feel awakrd. Wouldn’t bother again!!!!

This relates to the library and bar food/coffee tea's:It’s had a slight make over, but some proper tables would help, unless you are able to sit outside (lovely) the tables inside are too low to eat from.Inside it’s stepping back in time (as it’s meant to be: Gilbeert’s library etc) but the feeling is FLAT? It really does need some thought put into a refresh.

I've been here many times but never had such dismal foodFirst course was a "soufflé". Except that it wasn't. it was served admirably quickly, but far too quickly for it to have been made and baked. It was pre-prepared and resembled an omelette rather than a soufflé, but not a light fluffy omelette, rather a turgid dense lump of egg with a strong flavour of oregano (why?)The Main course offered a choice of two uninspiring vegetarian dishes. I chose a chick pea curry. The moral of course is that if you want a good Indian dish then you should go to a good Indian restaurant. This was dire. The potato was simply undercooked, the masala sauce was no more than adequatethe white wine was served at room temperature. For dessert, the raspberry crème brulee was acceptable but it came topped with a lump of whipped cream which frankly tasted sour. By which I mean turned, off, rancid. Will not be coming back again,

Went here for Sunday lunch as my mother in law is a big fan.She is a regular on a Tuesday where they have a set lunch 2 or 3 courses.Sunday however the set menu is 3 courses whether you want 3 or not and at £28 it’s is very good value and the food is lovely but we didn’t want 3 courses! I would rather have a main and a pud as would my daughter and the other 3 wanted a starter and a main as they don’t have a very sweet tooth. As I said the food was very nice no complaints but we didn’t all have a pudding as some of us were full, but they say they still have to charge you. I’m sorry but this is wrong. If you can have a choice of 2 or 3 courses during the week why not on a Sunday? The hotel and grounds are lovely and the food very good but this niggles me and would make me think twice about returning on a Sunday.

Stayed at the hotel with colleagues on a dinner, bed and breakfast rate.Unfortunately the meal here wasn't great but I did go to bed full so that's a bonus I suppose.Staff try hard and are very polite. There was only one minor hiccup with the service and that was that staff couldn't quite work out how to translate to their till that the dinner was already paid for! This was resolved in around 15 minutes though. The menu is strange to say the least. The supplements imposed are odd. Fish and chips carries a supplement yet the more elaborate sea bass dish did not. This could have been down to the market price of the fish perhaps?I tried the trio of salmon and the seabass with avocado, risotto and lemon oil. From the sea bass main, the avocado was missing, as was the lemon oil garnish. The rice was under cooked and hadn't made it to the 'al dente' stage and the fish was over cooked and dry.We all skipped desserts.I would recommend communicating changes to the menu before serving dishes so that the customer knows what they are getting. There is a pub close by to the hotel otherwise it would be around £10 to catch a taxi into Harrow on the Hill to go to a good restaurant.

We were given a voucher for £80 for this restaurant. Frankly, it was not worth the bother of getting there. A rather dowdy dining room needed a coat of paint, but we had two courses. Goats cheese in filo pastry has too much pastry. My soya sauce duck shreds was over spiced. My wife had a filet of bass, but only one small filiet, served with a mush of salad. They forgot the potatoes. I had rump of lamb, which was almost on the turn, with a sort of dauphinoise potatoe dish. Coffee (good) and one chocolate each completed the meal. £8 extra for a rib eye seemed excessive. Very pleasant waiters and waitress, but needed a head waiter to supervise. Wines ok, but plonk at £24 is a bit pricey. We seem to go every 10 years or so, but i do not understand how they can claim an AA rosette, and it seems (according to locals) to have deteriorated under the Best Western banner.

We visited the restaurant on the 5th of June to celebrate a Golden Wedding anniversary and it was a poor experience. My prawn cocktail arrived with no sauce and very small saver prawns and a poor salad. My main meal of roast beef was also of poor quality - the roast potatoes tasted like they had been re- fried from a couple of days ago, the vegetables very few of them were blackened, the cauliflower cheese was powdery in nature, the 1 slice of roast beef was inedible and full of gristle and I asked for gravy 3 times which arrived after I had given up trying to eat my meal. The desert was poor also - a couple of pieces of filo pastry with cream in the middle and a few sour strawberries- no compote or anything. Please do not come here - it used to be good but now no longer. Waste of time and money. Others had onion soup which had an odd taste with pieces of stale bread in it.

Have visited the Grims Dyke Hotel many times over the years as it was always a source of old fashioned service and good food however since changing hands (now Best Western) things have slipped. We went on a Sunday evening and had a drink in the bar before eating. The bar was empty and soulless and somehow all the seating looked like something out of 'Cross roads' no character left and the service was poor with the staff looking and sounding bored. The restaurant remains good value with nice food and the service there was fine. I think it needs to look to its laurels as its reputation is not what it was. There is no competition in the area and maybe that’s why they aren’t trying but it could be so much better.

I have always been a big fan of a traditional afternoon tea however usually find by the time you have ploughed through the sandwiches and scones, you never have enough room for cake (the most important part of course!). Grimsdyke has found the solution to this problem by doing an extremely reasonably priced afternoon tea with just scones and cakes! I came here with a group of friends for my 19th birthday and was seated upstairs. We are all not huge fans of tea so asked whether we could change our drink to hot chocolate- this they did with no problem, not even an extra charge! Our afternoon tea consisted of 2 delicious, warm scones(one without raisons and one with), a strawberry cupcake, chocolate eclair and lemon dessert for each person! An amazing amount of food which we all gorged on and all for only £10.95 each!!!!! At such a beautiful setting, you would be crazy to go anywhere else :) Only let down is that due to being upstairs, there wasn't always a waiter around......

Only a discerning Chef could find issues with any aspect of this restaurant from a customer's perspective. There is also an automated piano which performs in the background. One thing which I like is the fresh bread selection which is exceptional. So why do I not give it 5 stars? Well, I want to be able to get a seat next time instead of finding the place fully booked. The Grims Dyke is a lovely venue which also hosts weddings and has lovely grounds which make the perfect setting for wedding photography.
