Great spot, food, drinks, atmosphere, team and location - wonderful interior and seats outside.

The Christmas decorations were lovely and our server Harris was even lovelier!

We loved our dishes. The place is still a little noisy and the staff could be warmer. That said, it remains a good address.

I was in hollidays from Paris at London. This restaurant was very good and the "jarret de porc" amazing. I recommand.

Sadly not Eaton but they are a good bunch behind the bar even help us out on news years eve ?! Ya the best guys !!

Ate here with a party of 7 on a Sunday. Food was overcooked and dry -- you wouldn't get away with it in Germany, let alone for this price. I had a huuuge, bone-dry pork schnitzel with a few cornichons and anchovies kind of thrown at it, and nothing else at all on the plate. It was weird. One of us asked to not have the potato salad that came with their schnitzel; they were told they'd have to have it. One of us asked to not have the fried egg that came with theirs; a fried egg was brought and then removed(?!) The real star, though, was the service. I have literally never seen so many mistakes made my a team who all appeared to hate us and each other. Out of 7 people, three of us were served the wrong food, by a team who kept hissing and whispering with each other and snatching plates off each other -- while they were there, at least. Once they'd served the main course (without clearing away starters) they disappeared. I had to go find someone to order coffee. So I went and found someone. We ordered three coffees and three desserts, and I swear the combination of hostility and indifference was such that it took ten minutes to order. It was literally like talking to the French transport police. Look, this place is right next to two huge train stations. It relies on being in that location; it doesn't need repeat business. But there's no reason that either food quality or service should be like this.

Everything is good in this place.

The Lager was brilliant! And so were the starters = but my main course was more than disappointing - could well be my bad choice because every one of my co-diners loved theirs. I had the veal and honestly I feel that the description was wholly innacurate! But I will return again and again for the lager and the starters :-)

I organised a group of 23 people for a 50 Years On reunion at the GG. It went very smoothly. The food and drink was very good. There was some dispute over the final bill but Gurav fixed this for us and all left happy. It is a lovely building in a great location for people from different places too meet. Once again, loved the food, the drinks the service and the atmosphere. Many thanks x

While the restaurant's ambiance is undeniably stunning with its beautiful design, unfortunately, the German cuisine didn't quite hit the mark for me. The food just wasn't to my taste. Nevertheless, if you're a fan of German cuisine, the ambiance alone might make it worth a visit.

This is a great place, great atmosphere and the schnitzel is huge. I Service can be slightly slow but they are kind. The interior is nice the upstairs is great the downstairs is slightly busier for my tastes so you should book ahead. The food is good I would say get the schnitzel as they are known for it.

A refreshing oasis, an escape from London crowds. A welcome cool glass of water on arrival. Background music suitable to the vibe. Good service and delicious coffee. Near two huge busy stations yet far from their bustle. A spacious imaginatively designed interior with fascinating views. A great find for future journeys.

Good vegan option - not clear there are 2 restaurants & 2 menus in one building

We went there for breakfast and enjoyed it! Waffles were pretty good. Good service.

Such a surprise, from the outside it doesn't look special and the menu looked intimidating. But the interior is spectacular and the food is delicious! The service was great and the waiter was happy to make recommendations.

Easter Monday evening, the host left a bad taste in my mouth with the way I was spoken to. Myself and my partner wanted to visit GG for a sweet dessert and some drinks due to its ambient and nice atmosphere. The host said the "kitchen is closing early", so I said "okay just for some drinks then" as they have a bar upstairs that usually closes later. In a condescending way he said, "We're closing early?!? Because it's Bank Holiday Monday? Easter Monday?!" As if I'm stupid and didn't know what planet I'm on. "We're running on Sunday times". I told him I was aware because they usually close at 1am on a Monday and Google Maps stated midnight instead. I was there at 21:20, if GG was running on a Sunday schedule then surely the bar was going to be open until 23:00? He ended the conversation with Google Map times aren't up-to-date. It just shows poor communication, and listening skills. There are professional and better ways to tell a customer that your services are closing early. I think he was so fixated at the fact that we initially had intentions to eat a dessert and didn't bother to offer the option for us to sit at the bar. I should really be giving a 1-star with the way I was treated but I have had a positive visit in past, and the interior is really grand and classy. I won't let one staff member distort my view of German Gymnasium. But for now I'll take my business somewhere else to get rid of the bad taste they left :)

Lovely atmosphere. Great for drinks. Food was not great. The dishes were overly salty. Not great value for money. Drinks were lovely! Nice service & cosy atmosphere.

I ordered a hot dog and got food poisoning. While the service was very good and kind I would not recommend due to the food quality.

Lovely building and a really nice twist on breakfast classics. Average coffee, excellent wheat beer.

I’ve had divine meals and only passable meals here. It’s a head scratcher. Lack of consistency is a real issue, but on average I’m happy to come here and roll the dice.

Surprisingly friendly and relaxing place

I popped in for a beer with a friend, we sat at the bar, we really enjoyed our beers. The atmosphere is very lively and the decor is beautiful. Will defo be back

Great place to pop in for a drink. The building is stunning, huge wooden arches and just a fantastic setting for a posh bar. It's expensive, but I would imagine the rent is astronomical so no way around it. Definitely worth a visit.

Friendly staff, great drinks, excellent food!

First time visiting a German restaurant and while the atmosphere is beautiful and lofty with seating on several levels! However, the menu wasn’t so good (to my liking). The dishes looked like home cooking in appearance. The vegan curry wurst was ok but not as good as elsewhere my partner declared. That said I love my frangipane tart, the pastry was short and delicious. I found the coffee far too strong wand expect to be awake for an entire week!

The food was well below average considering the price. It lacked texture and flavour for a restraint of this calibre. One of the wait staff just walked off while I was trying to order, fortunately another waiter saw and took our order. Deserts looked amazing and it’s a great atmosphere. Considering the calibre of the restraint and price I couldn’t recommend anyone going here unfortunately.

Beautiful place, gorgeous Easter display… I just wish the food and service matched. Sullen hosts, no smiles waiter to begin. However my main point is the last time I looked CASH was still a legal tender in the UK. After chatting to the waitress she informed me the resin is “we have no change, so you need the correct money” What a lazy management attitude and of course there is no manager on the floor. Then to be told the floor team do not receive the gratuities if it’s not the correct amount is beyond legal and my comprehension 🤷🏼‍♂️. Lovely

Food (Schnitzel, Bayrische Schweinshaxe) and beer were good. Had a cocktail at bar after and bartenders not very proficient in drink making (even for things on their cocktail menu) and much discussion on choices. Ended up with something I didn't order but do drink so was fine in the end.

Amazing building, but service very slow and muffins were raw in the middle. Lovely pot of tea though.xx

Went to German Gymnasium for a date, phenomenal venue, phenomenal food and the staff are incredible. I’d like to especially thank Harris for the incredible service, and for taking the time to help my date overcome her language barrier with the menu

Had a quick breakfast while waiting for my train at the nearby King's Cross station. Big restaurant with high ceiling, the bright airy dining area really made me fall in love with the restaurant deco. The eggs Benedict were not bad, and the coffee is just nice. Service was prompt, but not overly fantastic.

Wonderful ambience, friendly service and delicious food. The schnitzels are yum and I can thoroughly recommend the giant pork knuckle - it IS a giant so arrive hungry!! Puddings are also delectable. Great for groups and dates.

We came here for special dinner and did not regret, but I doubt I would return. The building has great story behind and it adds to the experience. But some vibe was missing. Staff if friendly and professional, thank you! Service is a bit slow which is fine is you want to spend some time talking, but it is annoying that dishes are brought in different time and there is long way and wait from the kitchen. So the food is not hot when you start. Menu is quite unique for London. I guess this is the only restaurant offering Tafelspitz and that was the reason to come here. Unfortunately, the tafelspitz here is way below from what you normally get in Vienna. The restaurant split normal Viennese taflespitz in two parts - broth for starter and meat for the main course. If you do not understand it (and you do not because the waiters do not understand it and mislead you) than you do not have proper tafelspitz at all. Other food was ok. Wine list is good and waters understand wine, thank you!

Poached egg was over cooked for eggs Benedict coffee was over brewed and eggs Benedict was tiny very disappointing.

Suck lovely, lively place. Buzzing atmosphere & we were told it was a quiet day. Our server Costas was amazing. He tended to all our needs. The food was absolutely brilliant

sad times when the menu changes. The whole reason I returned back… was for the steak and chips & the fish and chips. The sausages and mash are okay… but the two best dishes that were MENU STAND OUTS have now been removed. These two dishes were the main reasons why I was returning back over the last 3-4 years… But hopefully they will return it back one day, when the time is right!

The place getting closed much earlier. It was closed at 22:30 while they supposed to work until midnight.

A stunning location right next to Kings Cross. We dined in the cafe section on the ground floor. It was a very busy Sunday with lots of tables being turned around. However, service was fantastic. Food was absolutely what we'd hoped for too - highly recommended. Herring starter probably the standout dish.

My partner and I came here for the first time last night and decided to have dinner in the Grand Café. Dez waited on us and he was very attentive, kind and provided a very wonderful service. we highly enjoyed the dinner and can recommend coming here! Beware, I've never been a big fan of German cuisine, which likely influences my review as much as the restaurant itself. I've visited several times (always downstairs), and while the beer is outstanding, the food consistently leaves me wanting more. The flavors tend to be bland or sour for my palate. However, their Beef Tartare is the best item I've tried on their menu and comes highly recommended. Unfortunately, I'm less enthusiastic about their wursts and schnitzels.

Food basic or not well cooked, heavy greasy schnitzel. Not something you should get wrong here. Bier not cold enough. Better pommes frites from McCain and your air fryer at home. Very average and way overpriced.

Atrocious service. We sat outside last week as we wanted some wine and a quick snack. We ordered two glasses of wine and some fries. The waiter only brought one glass and when we mentioned to him, he said sorry but walked away and never came back. The waitress was also totally devoid of charm. We then asked the front desk if they had any space for dinner, and they were so grumpy and looked at me like I was a tramp. We then asked for the bill and it didn’t come for half an hour. So we just left. Don’t feel guilty at all. Service was terrible.

Had a really great time here. The schnitzel Holstein was huge, and the service was really good - the staff were very friendly. The building itself is also extremely impressive! The staff were also very good about my shellfish allergy and made sure I was aware that each course was made to ensure no cross contamination

The food was great as always, but the service was terrible. The waiter forgot our starters and when asked where they were attempted to say we hadnt ordered them. He tried this twice before eventually admitting he had simply forgotten to write them down. When we eventually received our starters I ordered a beer. It took at least 20 minutes to arrive and when it did it was the wrong beer (despite it being the second of the same variety). It took 10 minutes of trying to catch the waiter's eye before we could get our bill. And when we passed him on our way out he looked through us as if he'd never seen us before in his life. Overall, not the level you expect at that price level.

Well-done authentic German cuisine. Assortment of beers and some tasty non-alcoholic ginger based drinks. Server was brilliantly brusque and efficient in the best Deutschland (Germanic) style. Loved it.

Good good and atmosphere. Went there in two occasions a day after the other and it was really good in both occasions. The first instance was a business lunch, and had a great meal (curry wurst as didn’t want to have a big lunch). Second time had lunch with a friend and was very nice too - this time I went for a Wiener schnitzel and it was superbe! Recommended!!!

The last time I came to GG they’d removed the dish I had planned to eat from the menu, which meant the menu had become very meat heavy. That was about a year ago, so I thought maybe I’d give them another try as I do like the ambiance and location is convenient - but it was a mistake. This time I picked what I wanted from the menu but it wasn’t available. So I chose something else but that wasn’t available either. The waiter recommended another dish, it wasn’t quite what I felt like but for the sake of speed I went for it. However unbelievably he came back to say that one had ran out too. So 3 dishes not available. Pretty rubbish for that to be the case in any restaurant. We were in a bit of a hurry, our table wasn’t ready when we arrived and even tho we mentioned we had an appointment straight after, the food was still quite slow to arrive. They gave us a discount to acknowledge the unsatisfactory experience but overall GG is not recommended

Breakfast meeting was really good.

I had been to the German Gymnasium before about 2 years ago and loved it, I was meeting a friend who I had not seen for a few years who was coming from Worcester and I suggested we meet here as it was so nice the last time. I booked the table beginning of Feb for Saturday 24th at 12.30. I met my friend outside and we walked in and it was buzzing we both loved it, but we were led to a table around the corner right by the kitchen door away from all the action it was awful we had literally been put in the corner of this lovely restaurant, we both sat there for a bit and said oh it will be fine but it wasn’t people were constantly going to the kitchen it was awful. We did ask to be moved and they moved us upstairs which was nice but very quiet and we were not in the buzzy atmosphere, it wasn’t what I had in mind when I booked this table, it was a shame as we were both really looking forward to especially my friend who had travelled up from the country!

Starter was nice but main was average and overpriced.

My friends and I chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday party also because, after confirming in advance with the staff, the menu had enough options for vegans. Although we had an overall good experience, it was not enough for us to consider coming back or recommending it. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with our order. We were informed that several items from the menu were not available only after we had placed our order. This was particularly disappointing for one of my friends who is vegan, as there was only one option available out of the entire menu, and she was not advised beforehand of the missing options.

A great choice for a birthday lunch! Excellent food (though the duck was rather dry) and fantastic service and atmosphere. We will definitely return for another weekday late lunch.

I have had breakfast at the German Gymnasium a number of times, but the last couple of times the food has been a bit mixed. Service was very quick: the food arrived quite quickly after we ordered and we seemed to be in and out of the resturant in no time at all. Still a love this little taste of Germany.

I returned here after around 3 years and was surprised to see the place almost full at 12.25pm on a weekday. It is certainly a very impressive Grand Cafe and the staff were polite and friendly. The prices were high last time I ate here but interestingly have not gone up significantly since. It serves traditional German food which is not to everyones taste. The portions are appropriate and the quality of the meals is excellent. Certainly I shall return again.

Well worth a visit, good wine list, excellent food, schnitzel the size of a small car

A great restaurant and bar in King's Cross right outside the tube and train station. Austrian and German cuisine, with various dishes including confit duck, Wiener schnitzel, various sausages, and apfel strudel. There are a few options for beers and a great selection of wines and cocktails. The service is amazing and Haris was very friendly and helpful. The upper floor is also a restaurant and bar and in my opinion better than the ground floor. I would strongly recommend making a reservation especially on a Friday and Saturday night.

The hostesses at the entrance were unsmiling and unfriendly. We only wanted a drink at around 5.00pm before catching a train from St. Pancras and the place was not that full, but we were told we had to go upstairs (a steep staircase) when there were plenty of empty unlaid tables downstairs. It wouldn’t have hurt them to have smiled and been friendly. We left.

I have very mixed feelings about this restaurant. I am under no illusion most of the food is cooked off site, brought in and reheated. But what I found most irritating was the portion size for the main course. It was obesity creating enormous. Who needs to eat half a duck? My husband ordered frankfurters. There was enough pork to feed him for a week!! Whilst some people may see this as a good thing, I just saw a great deal of food waste being created un necessarily. On a positive note, top marks to the Waiting Staff. They were fast, polite and answered all our questions.

I was so disappointed with my meal here this evening. £24 for a dry and tasteless pork schnitzel bashed to the size of a pizza. So thin and tough I could barely cut through it. Came with nothing but a fried egg and a couple of cornichons and anchovies on top. I thought from the menu that these elements would have been made into a sauce or salsa type accompaniment but no, just dumped on the top! Awful! I had to order ketchup to make it less dry. With a glass of wine and a side of fries the bill was £45! I would have honestly enjoyed a Big Mac meal more. Pleasant service and nice surroundings and probably nice for a drink, but avoid if you are looking for an enjoyable meal.

Restaurant near St Pancras station with a beautiful decor. Fair prices. For cooking, it’s so so.

We went here for a birthday meal and left very disappointed. The tables are crammed together and the lighting is best described as ‘anti-social’ - bright spotlights that make it impossible to appreciate the historic building that the restaurant is based in. The food itself was average at best, pretty poor considering the £29 price tag for a schnitzel with a ‘warm potato salad’ that was more like a soup and distinctly lacking in actual potatoes. On top of that the food (we just went for mains) arrived within 5 mins of ordering - way too quickly to even give the illusion that is was in anything but sat on the side ready to go.

Incredibly rude hostesses at front desk. Arrived with my family for a quick drink. Was told very abruptly we could only sit in a single file line along balcony. Plenty of vacant tables. Ridiculous. Drinks arrival delayed for unknown reasons given the number of staff sranding around doing nothing.

This place had been on my radar for a while, but it was a big disappointment. The food was nice, but the portion sizes were "modest". Tables were crammed together and the poor waiting staff had to lean across me to serve the table next to me - it was an utter shambles. We were left without wine for ages, even after having been served our starters. The staff were simply run off their feet (there weren't enough of them) and consequently unable to provide anything like a decent level of service. The building is attractive, but the overall service just didn't cut the mustard in what is a competitive market

I booked the German Gymnasium for a management team dinner. There were 13 of us and the reservations team were extremely helpful in accommodating us. It's a great venue with great food and excellent staff who know customer service. Highly recommended if you're in the Kings Cross area...

I met a friend in London today and we had very nice breakfast in this amazing building, such a wonderful environment. But what made it all the more special was the lovely service given by our waitress Stephanie. She was friendly but very professional, looking after us very well and it made our meal out an all round very enjoyable experience.
