A bit expensive. Coffees got mixed up and then got ignored for a long time to order and collect the bill during quiet breakfast hours... must have been a bad day!

Very beautiful building, very friendly service. We tried the white sausage with pretzel – really good, but also difficult! – and the Nuremberg sausage with sauerkraut – also difficult outside of Germany – which were in no way inferior to their German counterparts. The beer served was Warsteiner on draft and König Ludwig Weissbier, also on draft. The prices are reasonable by London standards. A nice concept.

Goid food, however the schwienshaxen is more like a small cured ham than a pork roast. No crispy skin which is the best part. Cool vibe, big beers.

Underwhelming experience. The restaurant itself is in a nice building and the atmosphere was pleasant. The food was average and overpriced. The vegan sausage was particularly mediocre. The chicken schnitzel was fine. The service we had was awful. The waiter forgot to bring our sides with our mains and then looked completely unbothered when we requested them. There was no apology at any stage for this. We were then given the dessert menu and left unattended for nearly 30 minutes as the waiter never came back despite only having 3 tables to look after in his section. We eventually had to call him over and get the bill because he never came back to check on us. Poor value and a disappointing experience. Definitely won't be returning

It is an amazing venue with great atmosphere but how can the food and service be so bad. I mean seriously, I wonder how can they do the schnitzel so tasteless. Service is horrible too. Waiter who doesn't really want to be there and moody as well.Went for a special ocassion and mentioned while booking.Nothing asked or offered.Only consolation was no service charge added to the bill.Maybe waiter realized how bad the service was and didn't bother, Not sure what went there. We were a table of 8 and were well looked after by our server. Food was mostly ok but the non German choices such as lamb shanks weren't great. Also, some of the desserts which I think were bought in, weren't very good such as the rhubarb tart (very dry) and raspberry tart (pastry so thick it was difficult to cut!) However, the sausage main courses were good and the apple strudel dessert was delicious! Order German!

Despite a reservation, we got a very bad table, jackets were constantly in the faces of people who passed by. It was also very drafty and cold, uncomfortable chairs. The Wiener Schnitzel... Well, the breading was a lot bigger than the meat. And unfortunately that was also very tough. Potato salad and cranberries good. Prices completely exorbitant for what is on offer, wouldn't go there again!

10/10 the first time we visited but much to improve on this visit. Firstly my wife asked under special requests for a great table as she was booking for my 40th - we were given a standard table between 2 lanes of busy walkthroughs near the toilets- despite better tables being available upstairs, so that request was clearly ignored. Food was great as usual but service started a little slow with excessive attention given to tables around us before we had a chance to even order. We didn’t appreciate charity donation added to bill (where does it end? Must everything we do have these extras added?) so we asked for it to be removed and although the waitress did it without resistance but took a moment to outline why the charity in her view was doing good work - why tell us that? Irrelevant, just remove it without the guilt trip please. 3/5 because the food and drink were excellent as usual.

German gymnasium! I crossed this place for work for over 4 months and decided to go with the team over recently. Did not regret the decision. The food, the ambience, the service everything was top notch. We had a few people in our team that day who had stayed in Germany for a long time and they attested to the quality and genuineness of the food. We enjoyed the starters so much in-fact we ordered all of them and reordered some. The main-course was amazing too, true to German cuisine. The menu is limited, one option for different meats (chicken, fish, beef, veg, lamb) take it or leave it haha. Overall a great experience would visit again!

We have visited German Gymnasium in London multiple times as a group of five. However, during our last visit, we had a rather unpleasant experience. Only two of us ordered food, and we noticed that the waiters were pointing at us and discussing something, which made us feel quite uncomfortable. Could you clarify your policy regarding groups where only some members order food? Should those who are eating be seated separately? Or was the issue that we were not allowed to sit on the ground floor because it is reserved for diners? However, as far as we understand, there is no food service on the upper floor. If only a couple of people in a group want to eat, what are they supposed to do? We would appreciate some clarification on this matter, as we truly enjoy the ambiance of your venue but would like to avoid such an awkward situation in the future.

The food was good, and my dietary requirements were perfectly respected. However, the dining experience at this large brasserie deteriorated after the first attentive waitress. Service became disorganised, with delays in addressing our needs. Despite not finishing our first bottle of wine, it was taken to a communal bucket and forgotten. When we ordered a second bottle, it took ages to be served, and I eventually discovered two half-full bottles in the bucket. After confusion and delays, the two half bottles were finally served. Had we known the first bottle wasn’t finished, we wouldn’t have ordered another.

We were a party of 14 which the venue split over two tables (not a great start). My starter (Lachs Roulade) was good. As the main dish I had Schwaebischer Rostbraten. Very fatty meat with tasteless Spaetzle. The Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte I had for dessert, looked and tasted as if made in a factory, rather than lovingly handcrafted. The service could have been a lot better too. Some of us had finished their main course before others even got theirs. The waiter didn't understand my order (in German - as on the menu), so I had to point at everything. Very noisy venue. I had high hopes but unfortunately, I won't be back.

I find it extremely unethical when you visit a high-profile restaurant and both the food and service are below average. I ordered a burger for my autistic son as soon as we sat down because he was starving and struggles with waiting. Ten minutes later, I ordered a hot dog for myself. Another ten minutes passed, and my hot dog arrived—no sign of the burger. We waited an additional ten minutes for the burger, which was so disappointing that my son, who loves burgers, couldn’t even eat the meat. I suspect it was microwaved from frozen. In the end, I paid £35 for this unpleasant experience and subpar food (1 burger and 1 hot dog).

Disappointing The meat maybe a 3.5 stars The cocktails where either ok or undrinkable It was nice that they had genuine bottled German beer. The draft Warsteiner was warm though! The potato salad and sauerkraut was pretty bad and not traditional. The staff were not attentive nor did they listen to requests. Service was so slow! Even when the place became less busy. They served my food and didn’t notice they didn’t replace my cutlery. I couldn’t get their attention after so I had to go get my own cutlery after. Had to ask and wait for water 3 times! The atmosphere wasn’t very German at all. The deserts were pretty bad also and not very traditional. Completely overpriced and poor service with very little German feeling or authenticity about the place. I spend maybe 3 months a year in Germany and I miss the place constantly. Did not feel the environment or food was anything like any of the many real German restaurants I have eaten at. Which is a shame and paints a bad picture and low standard for underrated German food. Doesn’t really feel that the owners have even been to Germany! More of a 1.5 than a 1 star. Defiantly not a 2. There’s better German food found at an Austrian place in Angel up the road. It still has some drawbacks but it’s much much better than here. 2.5 stars Also Ognisko in Kensington is a Polish restaurant which is even better. Slightly less German than the Austrian place but the quality is great. Easy 4 stars! German and Polish food is very similar in a lot of ways. Go there if you don’t want to be disappointed x

I am originally from Munich and have been here a few times before to get my Schnitzel kick. It was always pretty decent but this time, I was very underwhelmed. Some of the staff (short woman) was incredibly rude and unpleasant, we have been asked multiple times with the first 5minutes of sitting down what we would like to order (although I have asked for 10min). Once ordered it was like in a fast food restaurant. Food was placed, in order to get condiments, salt, pepper etc, i had to get up and get someone's attention. No check back once, no present service until we sat for a while with our empty plates. Now, the food... very disappointing. The coating of my friends Jaeger Schnitzel just crumbled off, it didn't stick to the meat and it was dry! My coating however also fell of the Schnitzel but was not even properly cooked through, you could still taste the egg in it. Both pieces of meat were not seasoned either. The best bit were the fries, which were excellent! We also shared a starter, the smoked salmon for £16 which was a bland but well cooked hash rosti, 3 tiny thing but tasty sliced of salmon and a drop of tasty horseradish. This will probably be my last time here for £70 per person, I can make much better Schnitzel at home without rude staff around me. The beer was served very quickly and the atmosphere was quite fun

The service is unbelievably slow especially considering the placing of the venue(next to the train station) where people are more often in a rush. Had breakfast on this occasion which was nice but disappointed I was unable to have a hot drink as the only alternative milk is oat milk- so not great for people who are dairy and gluten free. Ordered the Schinkenknacker, as did the person I dined with. It was fine. The bloody Mary was brown and tasted questionable. The creme brulee dessert was to die for. Atmosphere was very noisy - feels like a gymnasium in terms of the noise - which is fair enough, given the name. I wouldn't go here for an intimate meal, but it's fine if you're passing through and don't mind a lot of background noise and bustle. The service wasn't brilliant. The front of house lady didn't speak very good English and struggled to understand us (we both speak with standard Southern English accents), and I had to flag down someone to take our order for every drink, food order, and to pay the bill I had to physically get up and find someone. We were there 2pm-4pm, so not really at peak lunch time.

The actual building and reconstruction is great! First opened in 1864, the German Gym was built for the German Gymnastics Society, and is the first example of a purpose-built public gymnasium in the UK, designed by Edward Gruning. Super good location between Kings Cross and St.pancras - if you travel from north to London is very convenient. The service was good, however we didn't get any recommendations and we have to call every time to get more water as it was not set on table. The actual disappointment was food. We have been group of 6 and we had pork knuckle, tartar, Bavarian sausage and schnitzel - only pork knuckle were very good, the quality of rest was so so, as the main the tartan had chips (?) and was not a main, but was looking as starter. The meat quality was also not very good and it didn't have much on the top. Schnitzel was big but tasteless. Pork schnitzel was very good but it would do with more sauerkraut. Drinks were not as advertised - I have asked for fresh ginger alcohol free and I got syroup type over sweet drink. Service charge at 13.5% is included - is it deserved? Not really. It's better to admire building than looking down on your plate:) For me it was second visit and I would not be back but I recommend to see building itself!

Mine was lukewarm. The dessert sounded amazing on the menu, Donauwelle, but was very disappointing on its almost immediate arrival. Heavy, and not sponge like at all. In summary, the food was not freshly plated and the portions were small. The Brezel was the best item I had. The staff were very amenable though, the one plus point of the experience. Food ok but pretty poor service. We were a group of 8-10 business women meeting for the first time and had chosen this place due to its reputation. When we sat down it took a fair while to get someone to take out drinks order (coffees &teas as it was 11 am on a Friday morning). Even longer to take the food order and while some drinks arrived we waited 50 min for a number of coffees! (Yes, we asked several times where they were). The restaurant wasn't terribly busy and yet after an hour and a half (most of which had been spent waiting to order and then for the orders) we were told we had to vacate our tables in 15 min. We had not been told there was a time limit when booking, some ladies where still eating their mains and had drinks to finish. Just to be clear, while there was a lot of chatting on the table, we had all ordered food and drinks, so this wasn't a case of hogging tables for free. We just wanted a nice place with good food to meet up. Overall I was surprised by the poor service and obviously none of us will be returning.

I booked here for valentine's day on account of the mostly good reviews. On the positive side, the ambience is nice, the food options are good and it's in a convenient location. Unfortunately, however, my review is quite the opposite. Whilst the service was ok (not amazing), and whilst the food was reasonable, I was violently ill after eating here within the hour of leaving the restaurant. I emailed the restaurant the next day and my partner called at least twice, and they performed a review and concluded they did nothing wrong. I'm afraid, as I didn't eat anything beforehand since lunch and nothing afterwards I'm completely sure there was an issue with what I ate here. (I also know my body and know that being sick directly after eating for an hour and then suddenly feeling fine is on account of eating something bad). I mentioned I had a shellfish allergy and their review focused on this element and concluded it was not in relation to my shellfish allergy, however, I'm afraid it was obviously a bacterial reaction to something. Unfortunately, the response was defensive and in the spirit of covering their own backs. On this basis I'm afraid I cannot recommend this restaurant (unusual for my Google local guides reviews as I almost always only leave positive reviews of the places that I try). I found the response to throwing up violently for an hour tremendously corporate and procedural. Whilst I don't expect the bill for the night being refunded (though I do expect my food being refunded for obvious reasons, though this request was declined) there is certainly better customer care out there. On account of this experience I'm afraid my opinion is to avoid this restaurant and go somewhere else. Because if you are ill after eating here the result will be a defensive and procedural piece of paper work to cover themselves.

Really interesting décor and history. The staff was really nice and polite. The food was fantastic. The pork knuckle, the duck and the Leberkase burger tasted really good. Nice German beers and cocktails.

A bit style over substance, Wiener Schnitzel was dry, Sauerkraut too wet, potato salad too loose. Should have a dessert trolley (yes a bit old fashioned) so you know what your ordering as the "diverse & cosmopolitan" didn't provide a very good description & neither did the minimalist dessert menu...

Blonde host very attentive. Had to move section as initially got ignored by group of 5 waiters in waiters station. Ordered water and bottle of wine once moved. Wine was delivered no water. Impossible to be to catch waiters attention for bill or water. No check backs. As someone that works in hospitality and not one to complain a bit upsetting. Tables around us getting up to ask for bill service was not really there.

I liked my food a lot, but my friend didn't like hers. Crucial menu items were sold out, too, which was very unfortunate, especially for my vegetarian friend. It was only 7pm! Lights were not functioning in the loos, either. The atmosphere, decor, and surroundings are obviously great, but the service was sometimes very slow, though it was at least polite. It's hard to decide between 2 and 3 stars (I'd say 2.5 if I could) but, as I liked my food and found it very filling and satisfying, I'll rate this restaurant 3 stars.

The young woman at reception was extremely rude when I walked in. I’ve never experienced that anywhere and I was shocked at her awful attitude. I won’t be returning.

We were very excited to visit GG. Sadly the service wasn’t 1st class as we got feeling like we were not liked there. When we asked a question about the food we ordered, the answer was rushed, annoyed and sort of “got your food and eat I’m busy”. lol, honestly. We paid massive bill with service included, but service was not near the amount we paid... was defo not fair to serve us the way like we were not welcome there. we just didn’t want to make hassle to remove service charge (where honestly, they didn’t deserve a penny, harsh, sorry). Food was mediocre, and quality and overall food was lover than expected, sadly. Probably would taste better with way better service :) Our guest family were disappointed. Us too. I will think twice before visit again. Shame. Hopefully this will change for better.

My fiancée and I had Jojo as our waiter on Valentine’s Day. It is our penultimate Valentine’s Day before we get married, and this has kickstarted a beautiful romantic evening. She (and all the staff too) was/are lovely. Meal was top class. Dessert is stunning.

Being there for Lunch and had a fresh experience temperature wise. It is extremely well designed in my opinion and has really nice ambiente. As for the food I must admit that I am spoiled with coming from Munich, Germany. A lot of the choices on the cart are usual German fast food selections. Had the (admittedly) non-fast food Wiener Schnitzel and it was decent. For an extraordinary experience it simply lacked the "special-taste".

Fun atmosphere at this restaurant. It’s huge and buzzing. Feels like an evening out. The food was mixed. The burger with chips and warm greens was fabulous. The chicken was okay and not really fulfilling as a portion for an adult. The schnitzel was tasty. Had better at home so not worth coming here especially for this. Desert was reasonably tasty and I would expect an apple strudel in a German restaurant to be amazing …. and it wasn’t. Coffee was drinkable and the hot chocolate was weak so not recommended. So all in all, a great place for atmosphere and convenient if you are in the area or travelling through here. Personally, I wouldn’t rush back.

Sadly I agree with others who say that service here has gone downhill significantly. Have been twice lately and won't be going again soon. The prime location means it's too busy for the staff to care – our waiter clearly just wanted us in and out and tried to snatch the menu out of my hand at one point. The bare minimum seemed to be enough - no hospitality, sloppy pouring, wines unavailable, food arriving at different times, etc etc. All in all very disappointing, since this place used to be much better. They need to go back to basics – if you're a foodie and care about service, my recommendation would be to head up the road to Coal Drops Yard where there are better places at the same price.

Fantastic experience. Something a little bit different and a handful of excellent veggie/vegan options too. Recommend booking - we didn't and got the last table! Friendly helpful staff and excellent wine list.

I mean a flatwhite shouldn't be made this hot. If you're making a coffee and you're charging £8.70 for 2 coffees, then give it your due. It's just ridiculous that you're selling this coffee, which isn't even worth £2, for so much.

One of the best roasts I've ever had. I went for their closing day, and I am so sad I won't be able to have this meal again. The head chef is amazing - there was a selection of 10 different roasts to choose from, all within reasonable price £23-28 considering how big the portion was. The service was equally great! We spent a reasonable amount, considering we all had a roast, a drink and a dessert each!
