We originally had plans elsewhere, but cancelled to eat at German Gymnasium and so glad that we did. Portion sizes were huge, beers were even moreso. Schnitzel, delicious burrata caprese, and massive double pints made for a memorable evening.

Down in London with work and staying near Kings Cross so thought I'd have dinner at the German Gymnasium. After trips to Vienna and Munich, I've developed a love for schnitzel so ordered the Wiener Schnitzel which was lovely although not as good as ones in Austria and Germany. It's a lovely restaurant and good vibe and efficient service. Not the cheapest at £29.50 for a schnitzel but I had a lovely evening and would go back.

Great place we have been here several times. There was a bit of a problem seating us initially even though we had booked but this was swiftly sorted out and we were offered complimentary drinks. This a nice place to meet in Kings Cross, I had coffee and breakfast. The architecture and interior design is interesting, the toilets were like entering a scene from Enter the Dragon, where Bruce Lee fights in a hall of mirrors. The food was great and service good.

I visited on Friday 16th May with my son. We selected a table outside ,gave our order and waited. During that time noticed other customers having various issues with cold food, no drinks , not taking cash, waiting too long. Waiters wandering around with trays of food not knowing which table had ordered what. After20 mins enquired where our order was as we still hadn't had our drinks, just got a nod from waitress to imply it was coming. After another 10mins or so , noticed our order had come out and was set at a side table , getting cold. No drinks Waitress just looked at it - I indicated it was ours , she brought it over but no cutlery. She went to find some but got side tracked and we had to wait several minutes before cutlery arrived. Food was poor , no toast , and very cold, still no drinks. Came to payment , I said we would not be paying for drinks as they never arrived. Another waitress said she would get the manager , we waited another 5 minutes but no manager came - same waitress came back and said food was on the house which was the only saving grace. What a disappointing experience , and it wasn't even that busy. Will not be returning

Visited for a Birthday lunch for my dad. First impression showed a beautiful building inside, spacious with high ceilings and modern style. You are straight away greeted by your allocated waitress who goes the extra mile to ensure your visit is special. ‘Sofia’, our waitress was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. It was nice to see that even if she wasn’t sure about one of the drinks - she quickly let us know she will find out for us. We felt very taken care of. The food was freshly cooked and tasted superb. At first the dishes appear on the smaller side but after digging in - we realised it was way more than enough. They even surprised as by noting about the special occasion and bringing us a little treat. Would definitely visit again.

We stopped in for a few drinks, but the cocktails were amazing. Paired with the energetic, funny and very knowledgeable bar staff, we ended up staying for far more than a few and were late for our dinner reservation! The starters were very satisfying portions and were very good too. The venue itself is lovely, the atmosphere was lively and buzzing. I would recommend this as a great place for drinks, catch-up, well basically anything.

I had a wonderful time at German Gymnasium! The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful – dimly lit in a way that sets the perfect mood, whether you're on a date or enjoying dinner and drinks with friends. The venue has both upstairs and downstairs seating, which adds a nice spacious feel. This was my first time trying German cuisine, and I was genuinely impressed – everything I had was delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. Highly recommend giving this place a go if you’re looking for great food, great vibes, and warm hospitality!

We have been with a bigger group to that place. Its a rather huge restaurant. Our group had a fixed menu which tasted delicious, but is partially only inspired from Germany. The potato soup is 100% typical German. The salmon we had not so much. It was rather the sides that remembered on Germany. Green Asparagus (even though Germans rather fancy the white one) and the „Stampf“ which is a more rough version of mashed potatoe. The Apple Strudel was also great even though its more Bavarian/Austrian cuisine. All in all it was a very nice evening. The service mixed up some numbers of dishes but that can happen in bigger groups. I walked by some Schnitzel, which looked really yummy.

We had a lovely time here from the moment we entered. The staff kindly moved us from the original table (to avoid the draft) straight away. The food was varied and took my taste buds straight back to Germany. The schnitzel was cooked to perfection and the warm potato salad was super tasty. The Käsekrainer (cheese & pork) sausage was a perfect size with the super creamy and tasty mash and Saurkraut. The interior is also charming and worth a look.

Well located next to Kings Cross and Kings Cross St Pancrass train stations. Big roomy space with a great history behind it, the oldest gym in London, read more about it there or ask your server. There are lots of little details throughout that hint towards its former use. The food is well priced, not extortionate at all and you can get a good meal and a drink here for close to £20 a head, you can also spend a lot more, but you won't be disappointed by the quality, and our German friends with us agreed it wasn't bad for being out of country, it was pretty authentic. Because we had alcoholic drinks, deserts and coffees as well as a main each and some shared plates we spent just over £160 as a table. But £40 a head including drinks and the delightful space we were in seemed an absolute bargain!

I stopped by this restaurant for brunch and, unfortunately, found it underwhelming. The setting a —converted gym turned restaurant— lacks warmth and charm, and the food didn’t do much to make up for it. Despite the upscale pricing, the dishes were mediocre at best. If paying £25 for a standard eggs Benedict and a small bowl of cold fruit sounds appealing, this might be your spot—but I expected more for the price

We booked in advance but still we were given probably the worst table in the house, next to the reception with 2 of the chairs right in the path of the flow. I'm pretty sure the choice was made on the spot as we were with 2 teens and there was no Reserved sign on the table. Shameful really. Imo this table should not be there or host just 2 people. It was a special occasion and we still forked out close to 200 quid but I guess that was not enough. Otherwise the food was very tasty, though both my wife and son thought there was something wrong with the cabbage salad. Service was good too- respectful and not pushy.

The food: The schnitzel was perfectly prepared (Austrian style) with the breading wavy and detached from the meat. Great. However... the Asparagus dish was seriously overpriced and to add to that, it was completely overcooked. Given how long it took to get it, we didnt send it back, just ate half of it. On the other hand the boiled potatoes were undercooked! Really disappointing.

Very beautiful building, very friendly service. We tried the white sausage with pretzel – really good, but also difficult! – and the Nuremberg sausage with sauerkraut – also difficult outside of Germany – which were also in no way inferior to their German counterparts. There was no apology at any stage for this. We were then given the dessert menu and left unattended for nearly 30 minutes as the waiter never came back despite only having 3 tables to look after in his section. 10/10 the first time we visited but much to improve on this visit. Firstly my wife asked under special requests for a great table as she was booking for my 40th - we were given a standard table between 2 lanes of busy walkthroughs near the toilets- despite better tables being available upstairs, so that request was clearly ignored. Food was great as usual but service started a little slow with excessive attention given to tables around us before we had a chance to even order. We didn’t appreciate charity donation added to bill (where does it end? Must everything we do have these extras added?) so we asked for it to be removed and although the waitress did it without resistance but took a moment to outline why the charity in her view was doing good work - why tell us that? Irrelevant, just remove it without the guilt trip please. 3/5 because the food and drink were excellent as usual.

The food, the ambience, the service everything was top notch. We had a few people in our team that day who had stayed in Germany for a long time and they attested to the quality and genuineness of the food. We enjoyed the starters so much in-fact we ordered all of them and reordered some. The main-course was amazing too, true to German cuisine. The menu is limited, one option for different meats (chicken, fish, beef, veg, lamb) take it or leave it haha. Overall a great experience would visit again!

The food was good, and my dietary requirements were perfectly respected. However, the dining experience at this large brasserie deteriorated after the first attentive waitress. Service became disorganised, with delays in addressing our needs. Despite not finishing our first bottle of wine, it was taken to a communal bucket and forgotten. When we ordered a second bottle, it took ages to be served, and I eventually discovered two half-full bottles in the bucket. After confusion and delays, the two half bottles were finally served. Had we known the first bottle wasn’t finished, we wouldn’t have ordered another.

We have visited German Gymnasium in London multiple times as a group of five. However, during our last visit, we had a rather unpleasant experience. Only two of us ordered food, and we noticed that the waiters were pointing at us and discussing something, which made us feel quite uncomfortable. Could you clarify your policy regarding groups where only some members order food? Should those who are eating be seated separately? Or was the issue that we were not allowed to sit on the ground floor because it is reserved for diners? However, as far as we understand, there is no food service on the upper floor. If only a couple of people in a group want to eat, what are they supposed to do? We would appreciate some clarification on this matter, as we truly enjoy the ambiance of your venue but would like to avoid such an awkward situation in the future.

We were a party of 14 which the venue split over two tables (not a great start). My starter (Lachs Roulade) was good. As the main dish I had Schwaebischer Rostbraten. Very fatty meat with tasteless Spaetzle. The Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte I had for dessert, looked and tasted as if made in a factory, rather than lovingly handcrafted. The service could have been a lot better too. Some of us had finished their main course before others even got theirs. The waiter didn't understand my order (in German - as on the menu), so I had to point at everything. Very noisy venue. I had high hopes but unfortunately, I won't be back.

I find it extremely unethical when you visit a high-profile restaurant and both the food and service are below average. I ordered a burger for my autistic son as soon as we sat down because he was starving and struggles with waiting. Ten minutes later, I ordered a hot dog for myself. Another ten minutes passed, and my hot dog arrived—no sign of the burger. We waited an additional ten minutes for the burger, which was so disappointing that my son, who loves burgers, couldn’t even eat the meat. I suspect it was microwaved from frozen. In the end, I paid £35 for this unpleasant experience and subpar food (1 burger and 1 hot dog).

Disappointing The meat maybe a 3.5 stars The cocktails where either ok or undrinkable It was nice that they had genuine bottled German beer. The draft Warsteiner was warm though! The potato salad and sauerkraut was pretty bad and not traditional. The staff were not attentive nor did they listen to requests. Service was so slow! Even when the place became less busy. They served my food and didn’t notice they didn’t replace my cutlery. I couldn’t get their attention after so I had to go get my own cutlery after. Had to ask and wait for water 3 times! The atmosphere wasn’t very German at all. The deserts were pretty bad also and not very traditional. Completely overpriced and poor service with very little German feeling or authenticity about the place. I spend maybe 3 months a year in Germany and I miss the place constantly. Did not feel the environment or food was anything like any of the many real German restaurants I have eaten at. Which is a shame and paints a bad picture and low standard for underrated German food. Doesn’t really feel that the owners have even been to Germany! More of a 1.5 than a 1 star. Defiantly not a 2. There’s better German food found at an Austrian place in Angel up the road. It still has some drawbacks but it’s much much better than here. 2.5 stars Also Ognisko in Kensington is a Polish restaurant which is even better. Slightly less German than the Austrian place but the quality is great. Easy 4 stars! German and Polish food is very similar in a lot of ways. Go there if you don’t want to be disappointed x

Always a great option for lunch given the fantastic food and fantastic transport links. A leaving lunch made special by a few little unexpected surprises, thanks to our waitress Jojo who couldn't have been more helpful. Weiner Schnitzel to die for!

I am originally from Munich and have been here a few times before to get my Schnitzel kick. It was always pretty decent but this time, I was very underwhelmed. Some of the staff (short woman) was incredibly rude and unpleasant, we have been asked multiple times with the first 5minutes of sitting down what we would like to order (although I have asked for 10min). Once ordered it was like in a fast food restaurant. Food was placed, in order to get condiments, salt, pepper etc, i had to get up and get someone's attention. No check back once, no present service until we sat for a while with our empty plates. Now, the food... very disappointing. The coating of my friends Jaeger Schnitzel just crumbled off, it didn't stick to the meat and it was dry! My coating however also fell of the Schnitzel but was not even properly cooked through, you could still taste the egg in it. Both pieces of meat were not seasoned either. The best bit were the fries, which were excellent! We also shared a starter, the smoked salmon for £16 which was a bland but well cooked hash rosti, 3 tiny thing but tasty sliced of salmon and a drop of tasty horseradish. This will probably be my last time here for £70 per person, I can make much better Schnitzel at home without rude staff around me. The beer was served very quickly and the atmosphere was quite fun

The service is unbelievably slow especially considering the placing of the venue(next to the train station) where people are more often in a rush. Had breakfast on this occasion which was nice but disappointed I was unable to have a hot drink as the only alternative milk is oat milk- so not great for people who are dairy and gluten free. I wouldn’t recommend for this reason. I would have loved to give a bigger review as the venue is lovely

Nothing special here, very average food and basic service. The only good thing was the atmosphere, but not good enough to merit a return visit.

It’s an ok place to stop before your connecting train. The menu is full of processed food, surprisingly not that flavourful though. A fellow diner almost broke his knife on a ham knuckle. I wondered why no one asked if it was ok, he’d given up after 30 mins. So it’s fine, but there are just better places, very close

Elegant without being pretentious. Fish was superb, advice on accompaniments perfect; crème brûlée, excellent and of a serving size that anyone fancying a dessert didn't leave hungry. Took my mother for a treat - (didn't let her see the bill).

I think we are here literally every week, at least once. Friendly staff, amazing food – a very popular place, always busy. Anyway, I had eggs with matzah, and later something else – a sweet dish with matzah 🥰 trying everything, I did not know they did a Passover menu 😇 fantastic!
