Good atmosphere and place! Their doner kebabs are so good, especially the chicken! Reasonable pricing too. Would come every day if possible!

The kebab is quite tasty. The fries were awful and stale. Their card machine doesn't function, showing connection problems. Their staff look miserable.

The taste is awesome, I have had German donner in Germany as well and I must say these guys are pretty close to the original one

Extremely Disappointing Customer Service – Twice This was my second visit to German Doner Kebab at St James, and unfortunately, both experiences were marked by poor customer service and confusion around operating hours. On our first visit, we arrived around 9:00 PM (with posted hours stating the restaurant closes at 10:00 PM), only to be told by a staff member that they were already closed. When I pointed out that it was only 9:05 PM and the signage clearly said they closed at 10:00 PM, the staff member changed their explanation and said they clean from 9 PM and leave at 10 PM. After a brief back and forth, I was told they were open only for takeaways. Despite the inconsistency, I did manage to get my food, which was fine. On the second visit — again around 9:40 PM — we encountered the same issue. The restaurant had two tables finishing up, but we were immediately told it was closed. After reminding the staff of the posted hours, we were then told that no takeaway orders were being accepted either due to a “swarm of flies in Edinburgh” and hygiene concerns — supposedly forcing the store to close at 7:30 PM. This raised a few questions: Why were customers dining in minutes before we arrived? Why was there no sign informing customers of an early closure? And why, while being told they were closed, did we continue to see Just Eat and Deliveroo drivers collecting food from the store? The explanations kept changing — first 7:30 PM, then 8:00 PM — and staff seemed uninformed and dismissive. One even claimed they’d been on holiday and didn’t know what had been happening with the store hours. I found this response unprofessional and frustrating, as staff should still be aware of company policies. The takeaway here: the restaurant appears to close at its convenience, with poor communication and little regard for customer experience. Either they’re choosing to shut early to leave sooner, or they’re disregarding basic hygiene standards while continuing to fulfill online orders. Very disappointing overall — not a place I’ll be returning to anytime soon.

Too many flies inside the restuarant and landing near the food. Unacceptable.

There are so many great restaurants around and you chose a kebab, hoping that you would actually get the German version of this dish. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with German, it tastes like average quality kebabs in Poland and nothing more. The color of the meat itself is discouraging, after all, beef is pale, almost gray, and should be properly grilled... The only advantage (for some people) is that there is a lot of meat, but I would prefer a bit more vegetables.

One of the best places to have doner kebab.. they have plenty of other options too

I visited the St James’s store. A made phone app order to my table to be told u need to collect it ur self the food came 80% was salad And a wee but of meat very bad experience and waste of money

Ordered 2 boss box a quesadilla and wrap, wrap was stone cold and both chips were freezing cold.

Medium-quality kebab. Bad chips. Very small portions for the price point. Very slow service.

Lovely spot for lunch fast and good food.we ordered at the front the man was such a laugh and a snd guy however he was quite quiet and heard to understand and he loves to correct u when u say original it's OG 😉😉are food was rly fast so fast that it looked like he didn't get time to wash his hands after the toilet bc the wrappers had brown stiff on it but yk what idc it was so good!!! I went GDK for the first time & the last ordered the original German donner with extra meat meal looking forward to my meal till it arrived I was shocked when I’d seen the portion 80 percent salad and hardly any meat very bland no 1 asked us what kind of souce would you like on your kebab got a little tub of garlic sauce with fries would have been better off the with vegetarian kebab unfortunately I’m not vegetarian I like donner meat it was very hard to find in this kebab don’t go with there pictures they fake in total we ordered 3 German donners and 1 jounir box with burger very bad experience and waste of money requesting the GDK management respect your customer,s and give there money,s worth keep it up👍

1st visit. Ordered mix donor kebab with extra salad and sauce. All the salad and sauce seemed to be at the bottom and not on the meat. Was still enjoyable and tasty. A little pricey but maybe because it's Edinburgh!

Had a bad experience at GDK St James Quarter recently. Firstly, the service was very slow. There was only two people preparing the orders, and this was on a Saturday afternoon too which seemed pretty crazy. And this led to very long wait times for even simple orders. We must have waited 30 minutes for two donner and fries boxes for takeout. The staff didn't seem organised at all and looked a bit lost which added to the wait times. The food itself was also a let down. The quality of the chicken donner has worsened compared to what it was a few years ago, and wasn't nice. The curry fries were tasty but there was barely any in the box. And all this for £8. Won't be returning.

I had high hopes coming to this restaurant but it was bad across the board. The restaurant itself was freezing cold. They actually had cold air blowing from the vents. My hands were freezing and regretted dining in. The food took over 20 minutes to come which I would consider longer than usual for a fast food place and especially when the place is freezing. When the food arrived the chips were cold and the kebab was just bad. It was luke warm and the bread tasted stale. At best I’d give it two stars but I’d never go back to be honest.

I ordered 3 meals for me and my family the next day 3 of us poisoned. I used to eat GDK but will never try this one again.

The two ladies at the front are way too condescending and their behavior is utterly vile. They throw the tray on table as if they are doing some sort of favour. Also the young girl on the counter keeps on chewing gum while taking the order, chewing gum is never a problem but if you are doing that at the counter and that too in the hospitality setting it becomes unacceptable as a customer. Owning 2 restaurants and having worked in several establishments before that has taught me a lot about the hospitality and food business. The guy with the big beard at the counter is professional though.

Food was good the rice box was good I would only say its need more lettuce but all good I will be back

I had dinner here yesterday. It's a place I always come to with my family and I can guarantee you a hundred percent that they always do a bad job. Every time I come, when I say please and ask them to cook the doner, the meat always comes half-cooked and the potatoes are terrible. I have been doing this job for 15 years, but to be fair, I think it may be the last place I will go to eat in Edinburgh, so I don't recommend it.

As a person who visits regularly this was the worst experience as a customer. The portions in the donor kebab was not at all generous and the response from the employers were rude and aggressive. Hope they fix it as some one who visits this franchise regularly.

Easy to order via the order screens placed at the entrance. I ordered the Doner Kebab with fries, which as a German I can confirm is exactly how a German Doner Kebab should taste like. The price was okay for the high quality of food you get, which for me was around 12£

Staff very relaxed and very unwilling to help, kitchen staff seem to be the only ones working. One of the ordering machines isn’t working and the one that did didn’t print receipt off so everyone using it was left confused . Over all my first and last time coming. The shop was clean which was a pro but very stale sad atmosphere

I have visited this place a few times and every time had great experiences. The place always looked clean, with some free tables to have a seat to eat inside. Staff is always friendly, especially yesterday Talha and Gayathri. You guys have made my last visit very pleasant thanks 😊

We had ordered the OG Doner Kebab with Chicken as our choice of meat. The doner tasted really dry since they hardly put any sauces in the kebabs. We have tried the same kebab at multiple other locations in London, but have never tasted one that was so dry. The service was slow as well.

On tracker food kept showing as taking longer and longer to come. Even though it was already with the courier. By time it arrived it was freezing cold

i had a kebab meal and a doner box with kebab, and all the meals were delicious with a finger-licking taste. The staff was nice and cooperative, especially the guy at the front desk. He spoke very nicely and was very helpful

Good food but cheapskating hits hard. Got delivery without the hard paper packaging, in a thin paper bag, delivered to my door very wet (deliveroo boxes are also crap and get water in) and food promptly landed on the floor, with a meaty and saucy explosion. This place was great every time we came in. It was on the pricier side but overall we really enjoyed the food (especially the crunchy döner bread). Meat portions were also very generous. One thing that I wish they did was mix the meat with the veggies. All veggies were always at the bottom. Would have been nice if they were more layered or mixed up

I decided to write this as I was shocked today with the slow service at St. James. Ordered a single wrap and was 7th order and waited 28minutes to get it. A couple of other customers asked for a refund. I know that the lunch time is busy but the kitchen was doing great. I spotted my wrap being ready probably 10min into the wait! then I watched it getting cold for the next 20 minutes. Person serving the orders didn't seemed to be committed to their job. They were working at a slow pace, stopping to chat to colleagues and for no obvious reason. I know that GDK is not a fastest fast food, but such a wait is bad customer service, especially taking into the account fact that none of the proceeding orders was a big one- these were all single meals or sandwiches. I would understand if the kitchen was at capacity, but to wait watching my wrap getting cold was an insult. I am giving 2 stars as the food was tasty albeit cold. I will never go back.

Positive- fries still tasted fresh upon delivery :) Negative- meant to be less fries, extra onion & tomato, but no extra onikn/tomato, just loads of fries & cabbage and barely any chicken 😭

It can't be called German doner, it's not bad but it can't be called good either.

The Kebab was mediocre. However for wat it was way to expensive and you still hungry after one. Unfortunately does not really compare to a real German Kebab.

Almorcé en GDK Waverly el 15 de septiembre. Pedí y pagué mi comida, pero mientras esperaba mi pedido, un miembro del personal vino y dijo que la transacción no se mostraba en su cuenta, por lo que tuve que pagar nuevamente. Le mostré que en mi cuenta había cambiado. Dijo que si no pago, no me servirán, pero de todos modos, si se cambia doble, comprobarán y cancelarán un cambio dentro de 3 días. Hice una reclamación al sitio web de GDK abd envió todos los documentos que pidieron, y prometieron que me reembolsarían dentro de 7 días, no lo hicieron. Unos días más tarde, hice un recordatorio y prometieron reembolsarme lo antes posible. Hace ya más de un mes y no me reembolsan. Me pregunto si el clima es un error. Hasta ahora ( 10 de noviembre) no se ha reembolsado. Incluso si el cambio doble fue por error, ¿alguien puede considerar un error que 2 meses después nadie esté dispuesto a reembolsar mi dinero robado?

Truly awful. ZERO STARS! If you like salad with your Donee Kebab, this is the place to go because that’s really all you get with just a few pieces of doner meat. Oh… and it was cold. RIP-OFF! In response to your reply, which is the same reply to everyone complaining. A lot of people complaining and yet you don’t change. Looking through the reviews over time, you don’t care because nothing changes and you don’t improve!

FOOD POISONING!!!! I have ordered from this location several times and it has become my quick go to for a takeaway during lunch breaks. Today, I ordered a chicken doner wrap and fries. Less than an hour after eating this i began to exhibit some of the symptoms associated with food poisoning and four hours later began to experience all symptoms of food poisoning along with chills. Absolutely the worst experience. Friday ruined. Never coming to this location or any other German Doner Kebab again.

It was absolutely terrible. I tried really hard to find the meat between the bread and all I could find was 3 pieces of meat and a full salad.

I do remember the times when they first opened and started servicing Edinburgh public.. it was great. Pretty much close taste to the actual "german kebab" which I know how good should be as I lived in Berlin for 2 years and there's one of the best not german but Turkish kebabs (not sure why they call themselves German here) Once in a 2 to 4 Month I do eat sometimes there. But today I must say unfortunately everything is going down.. food quality (portion sizes inc), staff attitude, hygiene on the tables. We cleaned a table ourselves with the sprayer they used to do it that we can sit down. The only is rising "prices". Been there last time with my family spent around £60 not worth it. Won't recommend this place anymore to anyone. P.s Will check out soon them other branches in Edinburgh seriously wondering now will it be the same down fall in the others too.

I placed an order at one of the kiosks. The payment of €16.71 was accepted. However, no receipt was printed to confirm the purchase, and the order was neither recorded nor served. After my first complaint to the staff, the servers refused to listen and asked me to place another order. I then placed a second order, identical to the first one, while my colleague filmed me with her phone to have all the evidence and ensure efficient communication. Once again, the payment of €16.71 was accepted, but no receipt was printed, and the order was not processed. After a second complaint to the staff, the manager informed me that he could not refund the two phantom orders since there was no recorded order, and for the same reason, he could not serve me. We were asked to pay a third time at the counter! After several email exchanges with the establishment’s team and later with their accountant, I am still waiting for the refund. Therefore, I strongly advise against this restaurant chain, especially for company-organized trips.

Very good, but it's clinical for atmosphere

Ordered 2 chicken burgers, there was no enough fillings on the burger and buns were very hard for both. Only we got some pickles and onions, no chicken inside

They kept putting the delivery time forward until it was 2.5 hrs after order and no way to communicate with them. So we cancelled. Thankfully this lead to the discovery of “Today Schwarma” in Abbeyhill which was cheaper and much better quality food than German doner.

I was positively surprised, even though it is fast food. They live up to their motto "kebabs done right". They are clean, pleasant, they bring the food to your table, ... in addition, the portions are generous and everything is good and at a good price.
