This independent shop provides wonderful food, sells some of the best grocery products in Berkshire as well as making a gloriously wide range of teas. Oh, and the coffee really is the best for miles. We enjoyed the best start to the day with delicious scrambled eggs, bacon on sourdough toast. That lovely colour isn't a filter, the eggs really taste as good as they look.

Geo cafe is located in the heart of lovely Caversham and is a central meeting and greeting location where everybody from the community joins together to enjoy a coffee, a home made pastry, or other delicious items on the menu. Community spirit is a founding principle of this vibrant, heart filled cafe where the decor is incredible. Local initiatives include cooking for ukraine and supporting local charities and causes. The staff are tremendous and make time for everybody. They are so kind and also efficient and helpful. Everybody knows each other and people enter and chit chat. All ages are welcome from babies to pensioners. The atmosphere is exceptional. The bread is incredible and must be tasted as it will leave you wanting for more. Infact all goods on sale are delicious and are all from locally sourced suppliers, a particular favourite is the honey made by local bees. Basically this is a must see, must experience cafe. If you visit Reading or you are lucky enough to live here Geo Cafe is essential to your day/ itinerary.

This refers to the new Henley cafe although I see that they have taken their customer-service attitude from Caversham. We were delighted to see the cafe had reopened under new ownership. We used its predecessor regularly on our visits to Henley and it is one of the few places to enjoy al-fresco without traffic fumes. Sadly our delight did not last long… Ordered two Flat Whites at £2.80 each according to the menu board. They are cashless and was about to touch when I (unusually) checked the amount charged was £6.16. I politely queried it with the barista and was told that there is a 10% service charge - ok (I guess) but I asked where that was publicised and he pointed to a small “Additional Charges May Apply” notice. Everyone does it” he said, so I asked to have it takeaway, and was directed to an even smaller notice of “25p charge for cups” ….they are clearly trying time save the planet. All I said was that all charges should be transparent and a service charge added after not before the service is carried out - and be optional. His wife then arrived - they had a conversation I did not understand, and she turned on me to “explain.”It was clear from her voice, body language and attitude that this was going to end up a full-on argument so we drank our coffees and left. Interestingly another customer who had overheard the conversation objected more ‘fulsomely.’ The good news is that we are told that the previous owner has opened a cafe round the corner on Reading Road and has an outdoor section at the rear, so we know where will will go next time. Why 2 stars? - the coffee was excellent and had the total cost been clear from the start we would have been happy to pay it!!

I stand by my previous review but thank you for responding. However, I think you are confusing us with another party as we were never agressive but rather embarrassed as we had already started to eat and drink and there was no free table to move to as each of the four other tables had one person seated at them. We were not offered complimentary beverages, as we had already paid our bill, and of course, had we been, we would have thanked you, although I don’t know where we would have consumed them as there wasn’t a fee table. What upset us was that we were served by one member of staff and happily eating and drinking when we were told by another staff member that we shouldn’t have been served! We felt very uncomfortable.

As other reviews have stated, the woman manager of this café is abrupt, unpleasant, and hostile to customers. We bought coffee and cakes from her husband, then she appeared, marched up to us and told us we shouldn’t have been served as there wasn’t enough room for us two plus a high chair. She proceeded to say the same would have applied to a wheelchair user, due to health and safety reasons. We felt unwelcome and awkward, in this horrid atmosphere, effectively being told to eat up quickly and leave! I should have demanded a refund. There were only four other customers there. Fortunately there are other, lovely cafés in Caversham with polite, helpful and friendly staff where I can spend my money in future.

It was embarrassing and they had to be prompted at every stage of the visit plus a simple toasted cheese sandwich took 30 minutes to arrive (way after other food).
