While we've not had chance to sit in yet since the easing of restrictions, this was our second takeaway in recent weeks. Both were delicious and absolutely spot on, as usual. Great service and great food. Thanks.

Awful takeaway meal. My meal had the name of a dish crossed out and the name of the dish I had ordered written below. Needless to say, the dish inside was not the one I had ordered and paid for - but the one crossed out on the lid. Two completely different dishes! The rest of the food we ordered was below average. We regularly enjoy Indian food at home, and would not recommend this restaurant.

Visiting this beautiful area for a few days and booked this restaurant but I wish we did not! The service was very slow and the food was of poor quality and tasteless. This is the first time I have been to a Indian restaurant and didn’t feel that I had eaten an Indian meal! We eat out a lot and eat in many Indian restaurants. The restaurant was very busy with takeouts and I felt that our service was delayed maybe to fit with the takeout service and the kitchen staff to cope with the demand,I am also sorry to say but some of the servers were not wearing their face masks at all times!!

We booked a table for 7.00pm on a Saturday evening and arrived at 6.50pm. Despite being seated promptly, and offered drinks quite quickly, we were not even offered popodums until 7.25pm. The waiter finally took our order at 7.35 and we received our food just after 8.00pm. The food was ok, but not brilliant. I admit the restaurant was busy, but it was not full and I expect to be served quicker than this. The service was initially friendly, but when the waiter realised we were not going to leave a tip (a group decision based on the slowness of service), he turned surly and clearly wanted us out. We will not be returning.

We were a bit dubious as have had some ropy curries in Norfolk but this was lovely. Staff halpful and had a brief discussion but not intrusive. Lovely . Only reason not 5 stars was that clothes and coats had to be washed as the sizzle dishes smoked out the whole restaurant.

My partner and I thought we would treat ourselves to a meal last Friday to celebrate some good news. I rang on the day to book a table of two for us that evening, which was dealt with easily and quickly. Upon arrival, we were shown to our table and given menus. Our orders were taken in good time and the female waitress whom initially served us was accommodating and friendly. Both my partner and I enjoyed the food we received; I would happily recommend the vegetable dansak and kulcha naan bread. Once we had finished our mains, we decided against a desert as we were comfortably full, so therefore asked the male waiter who was collecting our plates for the bill. I also asked for another soft drink to enjoy before leaving; however, neither the bill or the drink arrived. We waited for around 35 minutes (we assumed they were busy serving other customers), however when we glanced around the room, we found the waiter standing behind the bar looking through his mobile phone. We asked a different waiter, however we still didn't receive the items requested, so we decided to skip the drink and pay for the bill at the bar. The waiter, who was searching through his phone, took our payment; however no enthusiasm was shown, with no smile or thank you as we left. None of the other staff seemed bothered by his attitude either, which would cause me to assume that this is his normal behaviour.

Part of my chicken was hard . There was little flavour in my dish, and my partner was disappointed in hers also. The only nice bit was the naan bread.

We visited this restaurant over the Easter holidays as it was highly rated in the vistors book at our holiday cottage. Our main waiter was lovely and friendly... but that is the only compliment I can offer (apart from naan breads were quite nice)We ordered: chicken korma - chicken was actually hard, chicken fozli - tasted a bit like a microwave meal, but i have to admit I was so hungry that I ate it (I had been waiting all day for this amazing curry!) My partner had a prawn pathia and I honestly have never seen a pathia like it, there was water floating on the top and no flavour at all. My nephew had a chicken tikka masala and said it was quite nice. My partner complained to our waiter who called the ?manager over. The manager was not apologetic and reluctantly said he would take the pathia off the bill but only after my partner told him we would not be paying full price. We also ordered 4 poppadoms... I am mentioning because when we got the bill we were charged £7.20 for poppadoms which I queried and was told its 90p a poppadom and 90p per head for dips (there were 3 dips). By this point I couldn't be bothered to say that one of us didn't have the dips.I am not sure if we are spolit where we live but our curries are also usually served hot/sizzled prior to being served - these were fairly luke warm.So for the 4 poppadoms, 3 curries, 3 naan bread, 2 rice and 4 soft drinks we paid £62, which is quite expensive compared to [very tasty] curries where we live in the Midlands.

You can't beat a good Indian meal and this restaurant does it all right. We hadn't booked a table, but on a Wednesday night at about 7pm it wasn't a problem for the two of us. However the restaurant did soon fill up, so if there is a group of you it might be worth booking. The menu offers all of the traditional Indian dishes, we enjoyed poppadoms, vegetable biryani, chicken balti and peshwari naan. The food came quickly and was very tasty. We've found in the past that some Indian restaurants poach their chicken which we don't like the texture of, but the chicken here was delicious. We weren't tempted by a dessert (looked like the typical pre-made ice creams) but did enjoy the little chocolate with our bill! We paid about £30 for our food and a couple of beers each. Would definitely go back.

We had a meal here yesterday and enjoyed the food, the breads were fantastic and the curries delicious. Our waiter was very attentive and kind and we really appreciated the hospitality. We were horrified when a group of around ten people at a table near us started mocking the waiter to his face because his speech was affected (which we did not pry about as it’s frankly rude) and they misheard him and corrected him and did horrible impressions of him. He was extremely gracious and kind throughout their treatment of him and it broke my heart. I am writing this review in the hope that one of these people will read it and realise how absolutely shameful and cruel their behaviour towards him was. I am also writing this review to highlight how professional and lovely this waiter was and to thank him for such brilliant service. We will be back. I hope those awful people never return, nobody deserves to be treated that way. Thank you again for a lovely meal :)

First impressions count and sadly we were disappointed by our meal last Thursday evening. The chicken tikka madras was requested to be “spiced up to half vindaloo” and it was, sadly, very mild. I was laughed at when I ordered my food, and asked in a patronising manner if I’d like chicken tikka masala “like all the English ladies!” My husband nearly choked on the beer he was enjoying as we ordered our food, as actually I love very flavoursome, spicy food. Sadly, I didn’t receive either, even though it was from the special list. The most disappointing part of the experience was the treatment from the older gentleman who took the order. Quite patronising.

We used to regularly use the Gate, but do so less and less. Portion sizes were getting smaller each visit and the quality and taste varied greatly. This evening we opted for a take away and as has happened previously we had the wrong items in our bag. The chicken tikka fozli was actually biryani - unfortunately without any vegetable curry. A clean and well presented restaurant, which if it wasn't for our young children in bed would have been more than happy to sit in. The food came after a 30minute wait but absolutely delicious. There was a good choice on the menu too. The only negatives were the price which I felt was quite high (£30 for one starter, 2 mains, 1 rice, 2 naans and popadoms) but you become to expect that in the tourist areas. The other minor disappointment was they had forgotten the chutneys for the popadoms we had paid for. Would definitely give it another go.

We've been to the Star of India a few times in midweek and enjoyed the food and had decent service. However we made the mistake of going on a Saturday night when restaurant customers were neglected by the staff as they fought to handle the numerous takeaway orders being received at the bar. We waited nearly an hour for food, the plates were almost thrown down and were never asked if we wanted dessert, coffee or even offered a warm towel on the night. I appreciate that many restaurants rely on takeaways as well but why they can't stop takeaways at, say, 7.30 on busy Friday and Saturday nights I don't know, the staff were harassed and simply couldn't cope. The food wasn't bad at all but the poor service and staff means we won't go on a Saturday again, midweek maybe...........

However, when the main courses arrived we were rather disappointed with the size of the rice dishes for the price and the curries were rather vivid in colour and with far too much sauce for the limited amount of meat. They were also served in what looked like cereal bowls, instead anything remotely authentic. This was a quiet Tuesday evening and surprised at the length of time it took to get the bill. Firstly, this restaurant is in Aylsham, not Norwich!Don't know why but, whenever I holiday in the UK I try to seek out a decent Indian restaurant. Having lived in London for so long, I'm often disappointed with what I find.Usually, Indian restaurants outside of large cities in the UK serve up less tasty, less spicy dishes than us city folk are used to (Discuss). Gate of India bucks this trend, I'm very pleased to say! This restaurant is typical of the sort that once graced any of the capital's high streets (before the word "contemporary" took over) & that's no bad thing. My family & I all had something different & none of us were dissatisfied with our choices. My young daughter loved her mango lassi (her favourite Indian drink) & I was surprised to find an out-of-city vindaloo that was actually as hot as it should be (I'll have to dumb down & go for the Madras next time)!Friendly service & a clean, fresh feel to the restaurant itself; I'll return some day soon!

This was our first visit to the Gate of India - and it was "OK" - nothing outstanding and the service was quite rushed.....the starters arrived before we were halfway through the poppadoms. Whilst there was nothing wrong with what we had to eat, we'll probably not return as there are better Indian restaurants in the wider area around Aylsham

Haven't had a curry for some time so we thought we would celebrate England's victory over Wales with a take-away. The Gate of India were very helpful in providing food specifically cooked without onions or garlic, and it was ready at the appointed time. The portions, particularly of the basmati rice, were reasonably generous, and the food is not over-priced. The tandoori chicken was good but the duck was disappointing, and overall we were under-whelmed, though I'm not sure exactly why. The place is popular, which speaks well for it, and the staff are polite and helpful. Not sure what they could have done better, but it didn't make us want to go back again. A pity.

when getting home, there was one item missing, could not be bothered to go back as rest would have been cold, at most it was warm only and we live within five minutes, and it was so bland, to others we have had from there, it was not spicy tasting like usual, maybe new chef ?? not good this time.

Food was lovely, a wide selection and some nice specialitiesI would hesitate to say the portions where small as normally I end up leaving food in an Indian but they where let's say 'sensibly sized', although more rice would have been nice.

I can well recommend a meal here. Good food, plenty of it and prompt polite service. Together with the free parking in Aylsham town centre, what more could you ask for.

This restaurant is our local Indian where in the past we have had some very nice meals. However, over recent months things have not been so good; portion size has decreased and promptness of service declined with very long waits for food. It took nearly 45 minutes to get a stater after we had ordered and a similar time for the main meals. In a duck curry tonight there was only 4 small squares of meat, the rest juice and a chicken tikka starter was cold. Comments were made and some correction made but the whole process disrupts the enjoyment if a meal. To give then their due they were busy with take away but surely diners at tables should have better service.

It was our first visit to the restaurant although we have had a takeaway before and we weren't dissapointed. The food was suburb. There were 3 of us and although the resturants was very busy (It was 8:15 on a Saturday evening), and we hadn't booked we, were lucky enough to get a table. Our only negative point is the tables are small. We sat at a table meant for four and we ordered 3 main meals 1 rice dish, 2 naans, 3 side dishes and this filled the table. So if there had of been 4 of us it could have been a problem. However as I said the food was all superb and we will definitely be returning.

Had a very good meal at this restaurant, from the starters to our main, which was superb, to the service. The only criticism I have is that I found the lighting to be a little too bright, may seem a tad petty but if that is my only criticism then that's not bad going.

I have eaten in this restaurant a few times and it is either excellent or middle ground. It could benefit from staff that understand English a bit better as I have yet to be given the drink that I ordered. Overall the food is of high quality. Service lets it down, especially if busy.

We have been going to this Indian Restaurant since we moved to the area ten years ago and I can honestly say we have never had a bad meal there The staff are always welcoming and hlelpful we normally book but have arrived on spek and always been found a table. A full range of drinks including wine is available together with Indian beers . The menu is extensive and includes several Cheffs recommendations and speciality dishes plus all the normal favourites. If we are in the mood for Indian food we never tire of the Gate of India if you are in the area I believe it is well worth a visit .

My wife and I have been enjoying Indian cuisine here for years and years. We booked at 5.45 and dined at 6.15pm last Friday. It was full by 7pm. That speaks for itself. It has been here for around two decades, while others have come and gone. That speaks for itself. We are never disappointed here.

2nd visit to this establishment & was slightly disappointed as we brought friends based on our excellent experience previously. We were squeezed into a small table that would be better serving 2 not 4. So tight that our food dishes were laid out on table next to us - until a waiter sat someone there. They obviously felt cramped to as asked, and were, moved to another table. Not even a weekend. Just not well organised. Food is good though so I guess this was just a bad night service wise. I have no doubt we will be back.

This reataurant used to be fantastic, but recently has slipped a little. The menu is extensive and generally well prepared but for the past few months it mostly seems to taste the same but with different 'heats/strengths'. The staff are always welcoming and the service is good, but when it's busy you can wait quite a while before the food arrives. Worth a try though in case you catch it on a good night. Handily placed on the market place so parking nearby is generally not a problem.

Been coming here weekly fortnightly or monthly for 21 years! This place is great. Always keeps up with the times clean tidy comfortable excellent service and the best indian food you can buy in Norfolk. Sensibly priced attractively served all the dishes do what they say on the menu. Always come away replete, had to discreetly ease waistband on way out after recent visit. Don't miss this place you will regret it if you do!

All of the really good reviews on this restaurant's web site are at least 3 years old. I guess it must have changed hands or the owners have become complacent because I found it neither welcoming or good value and the food was distinctly average. The sauce on my Chicken Tikka Massala was way too sweet and they used too much tomato and not enough cream. The staff seemed almost resentful at having to seat us or serve us. I wish I had gone to the chippy that night instead.

Rotten food, rotten meat, disdainful service. Shame - Aylsham is a properous Norfolk market town with an audience that knows the difference between authentic Indian dishes and the old 'give them anything with spice and they'll eat it' attitude of old. Message to the owners from somebody who knows a thing or two about the restaurant business, (and a view shared by all their ex local customers), fire the chef, fire the staff and start again.

Eaten here on many occasions over the past few years. Mostly been very satisfied, but recently chicken madras tasted as if the chicken had been pre cooked and placed in a under spiced madras sauce. Also prices have climbed to a all time high. Shame

Feeling hungry a friend and I went to The Gate of India on an impulse after a good walk along a beautiful beach at Salt Houses. The food was good as was the service, portions just right although in fact we were unable to finish it so the kindly waiter put it in take-away cartons which I polished off the next day! The price of the meal was reasonable, average I would say, staff friendly. My only adverse comment which is not food or staff related is the atmosphere is pretty dull, would like to see a more exotic decor and atmosphere - but that is just my taste (in flocked wall-paper?!) and does not detract in any way from food and service which I would recommend. Had a take away from there once on a visit to Aylshsm and it was just as good.

We have had several takeaways from the Gate of India and have eaten in on occasion. Unfortunately they need to watch the oil content on the top of the dishes for takeaways as they are getting out of hand! Whilst you might expect a little oil? the dishes we had were quite bad and we had to drain them all when we got home. Also as another person had commented the dishes seem to have an abundance of onions for some reason. The food use to come in a lovely rich sauce but just recently the food does not seem marinated and very oily with lots of onions. The staff are very friendly and the service is good although you can be forgotten about on occasion when they are busy unless that is a ploy for you to order more beer whilst you wait for your food. Come on Gate of India little more care and attention please.

The waiters were back and forth through the restaurant dealing with take-a-way orders with no care for the customers seated. We had our pop-a-doms and then had to wait about another 20 mins before they came back to take our order. We waited 1 hr and 15 mins for our food and unfortunately it wasn't worth waiting for. Both mains and side dish were really quite tasteless and the bhuna had hardly any sauce, just loads of half cooked chopped onions? I would not recommend for eating in or take-a-way and I certainly would never go back!
