Restaurant very busy for a Wednesday night which is a good sign. The food and service was excellent. Will definitely return.

I highly recommend a visit! It comes with I must say outstanding food, along with a very warm and friendly welcoming.

This had a pretty patchy history: gruff and brusque service coupled with indifferent food. But it was publicised under new management so we gave it another chance. Waste of time,; no change in service and if anything the standard of food had deteriorated never again

Third visit to this restaurant and our experience couldn’t have been so different from our previous experiences - first to say that this is now under new management (thank goodness) and the change is so evident All staff were so friendly and helpful - the food was extremely good and so to the ambiance - now definitely recommend and will return

The food was good and the service attentive, it was overall a very pleasant meal. The one thing that spoiled it was a woman came into the restaurant almost naked, masses of white flesh on display, her Spandex pants and brassiere top left nothing to the imagination. In short it was highly offensive to public decency and she should not have been allowed in the restaurant so immodestly dressed. It was vulgar, coarse, rude and grossly offensive. Perhaps a policy of NO BARE CHESTS, NO BARE BELLIES, NO SPORTSWEAR.

I've not been in for a while, and I thought I'd give a go with the new management and chefs. So much better. I had a simple chicken balti with peswari naan. Chicken was tender, and balti gravy was rich and spicy. Will be back again soon with the rest of family.

Just had the most awesome meal. Everything was delightful...from starter to dessert; well prepared, fresh, generous portions, super tasty and a host of friendly, efficient gentlemen serving us. Will definitely return and definitely recommend. Thank you for a very pleasant experience

Good location with parking nearby. Strange lighting in the restaurant. Service indifferent. Presentation of the food was disappointing- curry in china bowls made it feel like a TV supper at home. My partners king prawns were not king prawns at all, just small prawns. Wouldn't be top of my list for a return visit.

One of the best curry houses I have been too. I had the lamb shank and it was the best curry I have ever had and I have been to many Indian restaurants and to India too. Wasn't expecting that in Aylsham! Left content and full with taste buds zinging. The chef knows how to cook and the service is excellent. Well done all

Seems as Abu and the staff have given up. Disinterested service bordering on being rude. Same old one pot village idiot food, poorly presented and lacking any Indian authenticity. Hopefully if new owners come in they'll breathe new life and enthusiasm into what was and could be a top eatery.

We ate the rice and nan bread that came with our main meal they were the only 2 items that had some flavour to it. The diced chicken was tough to eat on both different dishes. There was no atmosphere in the restuarant that was probably due to having only handful of people sitting eating 8.30pm... the lighting in the restuarant was odd, spotlights in ceiling with different colours in each light. Multicoloured dining perhaps!. Overall think it needs updating, including a fresh approach chef.

This is the third time we’ve had a meal here. Excellent service and delicious food. Would highly recommend as they’ve never let us down.

Chicken so dry and chewy , almost choked on it. Sauces very bland , especially the passanda,. Was warned by a friend not to bother, now wish I had listened!! Would not order from here ever again . Also very expensive and portions tiny!

Ordered takeaway from here. Not for the first time, but this time it was very disappointing. Ordered a Tikka Masala and a Chicken Bhuna, and some sides. All chicken was overcooked and dry, very chewy. Tikka sauce was too runny and lacked flavour, same with the Bhuna, no intensity of flavour or spice. Poppadoms were delicious, and the naan was fine, but you don't order a takeaway in the basis of the side dish quality. Won't order from here again as there are other better options within a 15 minute drive away. Shame, especially when all prices seem to be going up, to waste your money on bad quality.

Last minute decision around 7pm on a Sunday. Empty Resturant, freezing cold air con, obviously no atmosphere being only one other customer. Service was kurt, rice made tiny, no offer of popadoms nuts plates taken away, both meat dishes were tiny and just overcooked chicken and a sauce. I’ve spent time in india and this was so bland and a nothing of a meal. The price is so high for what you get, we left feeling really deflated. We hardly ever go out and we left we just wasted so much money. We won’t come back if it stays this bad.

Absolutely brilliant, I had the best chicken tika of my life and the restaurant was lovely, it had really good atmosphere. Very friendly staff too. Would recommend

What's happened? We went here the other night for what we thought would be a good meal, we were a little concerned to see nobody in there but stayed anyway, oh how i wish i hadn't, i have been very ill since the early hours of the following morning (food poisoning), so be very careful if you go here and it's not busy because i wouldn't want anyone to end up like this.

Excellent food, service and price

Ordered a prawn korma and it tasted like sandy water. Awful. It used to be such a nice Indian but I've now had 2 bad takeaways in a row. Won't be going back.

Impromptu Indian meal after needing to kill some time in Aylsham. King Prawn Puri is one of the best I've had. Bhuna was excellent and Naan breads top notch. Lucky Aylsham to have this gem close to hand.

What has happened to our local Indian?? 6 of us went there last night and were very disappointed. I ordered a prawn cocktail for a starter which was just flooded with sea food sauce. It looked like just a bowl of it. The rest of the food was very slow to arrive, had obviously sat around for a while as it had dried out on top and so so salty; some of it was inedible. Rather than make a fuss, I shall not be ordering or eating here again. A great shame.

1st time ordering a takeaway, it was delicious, would definitely use again, staff friendly and welcoming, ordered over phone and order was ready when i arrived. Look forward to coming in to eat. Only moan is no free poppadoms, all the Indian's used in past did this, nice little gesture maybe. 👍

Fantastic service from the gate of India, we were a large group, for which they asked for a pre order, and we received nothing but amazing service. Food was really for collection at the prearranged time, no waiting around, no hassle, nothing missing. Couldn't have asked for more Menu offered a good range, and all the classics avalible plus a few more. Food was cooked well and all freshly cooked to order

While we've not had chance to sit in yet since the easing of restrictions, this was our second takeaway in recent weeks. Both were delicious and absolutely spot on, as usual. Great service and great food. Thanks.

Awful takeaway meal. My meal had the name of a dish crossed out and the name of the dish I had ordered written below. Needless to say, the dish inside was not the one I had ordered and paid for - but the one crossed out on the lid. Two completely different dishes! The rest of the food we ordered was below average. We regularly enjoy Indian food at home, and would not recommend this restaurant.

Booked this place after being recommended however, was not impressed: prawn starters - well over cooked as hard to cut due to being like rubber, salad nice. Main meal - mixed grill- chicken over cooked, soft but very dry and 5 out of six meats were all well over cooked and like rubber but 1 piece ok. Everything else was very nice though. Wife had biryani which was tastless. Had Irish coffee but it was so sweet and when asked why waiter said that he had put 2 heaped sugars in, but he did not know why. Still gave £10 tip but no thanks though. Probably will not return.

Visiting this beautiful area for a few days and booked this restaurant but I wish we did not! The service was very slow and the food was of poor quality and tasteless. This is the first time I have been to a Indian restaurant and didn’t feel that I had eaten an Indian meal! We eat out a lot and eat in many Indian restaurants.The restaurant was very busy with takeouts and I felt that our service was delayed maybe to fit with the takeout service and the kitchen staff to cope with the demand,I am also sorry to say but some of the servers were not wearing their face masks at all times!!

I’ve given a 3 star review as we had a very hit and miss takeaway here while on holiday. Some of the dishes, such as the shashlick bhuna, were good and the meat cooked well. However some of the dishes were not as the website described, with different flavours. One of the dishes, the passanda, was disgusting and we had to bin it unfortunately. We thought this would be a relatively standard dish but it was tangy, acidic and not good. I would recommend avoiding this dish. We also had the King Prawn Bahari, but the prawns were hard and rubbery, and not nice. The sauce however was flavourful - another example of the hit and miss of our takeaway here. The nawabi raan dish was very good, and if you do eat here I would recommend this. The Akbori chicken was also a good dish. All in all, it was a reasonable experience, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Brilliant food and pleasant décor and atmosphere. However, the staff could be a little better at English and ensure that they do not touch my smartphone during a pandemic.

We booked a table for 7.00pm on a Saturday evening and arrived at 6.50pm. Despite being seated promptly, and offered drinks quite quickly, we were not even offered popodums until 7.25pm. The waiter finally took our order at 7.35 and we received our food just after 8.00pm. The food was ok, but not brilliant. I admit the restaurant was busy, but it was not full and I expect to be served quicker than this. The service was initially friendly, but when the waiter realised we were not going to leave a tip (a group decision based on the slowness of service), he turned surly and clearly wanted us out. We will not be returning.

We were a bit dubious as have had some ropy curries in Norfolk but this was lovely. Staff halpful and had a brief discussion but not intrusive. Lovely . Only reason not 5 stars was that clothes and coats had to be washed as the sizzle dishes smoked out the whole restaurant.

My partner and I thought we would treat ourselves to a meal last Friday to celebrate some good news. I rang on the day to book a table of two for us that evening, which was dealt with easily and quickly. Upon arrival, we were shown to our table and given menus. Our orders were taken in good time and the female waitress whom initially served us was accommodating and friendly. Both my partner and I enjoyed the food we received; I would happily recommend the vegetable dansak and kulcha naan bread. Once we had finished our mains, we decided against a desert as we were comfortably full, so therefore asked the male waiter who was collecting our plates for the bill. I also asked for another soft drink to enjoy before leaving; however, neither the bill or the drink arrived. We waited for around 35 minutes (we assumed they were busy serving other customers), however when we glanced around the room, we found the waiter standing behind the bar looking through his mobile phone. We asked a different waiter, however we still didn't receive the items requested, so we decided to skip the drink and pay for the bill at the bar. The waiter, who was searching through his phone, took our payment; however no enthusiasm was shown, with no smile or thank you as we left. None of the other staff seemed bothered by his attitude either, which would cause me to assume that this is his normal behaviour.

We asked for a table for two the waiter looked us up and down as though we were not good enough to be there (jeans nice top ) he then proceeded to sit us at a wall even though only one other couple were eating there. I ordered a dhansak which came out dark brown chicken over cooked. Nothing about this experience was nice at all. Don’t bother

Absolutely brilliant food, but never fails to make us ill after eating. Having a renewed health inspection would do this restaurant the world of good.

We decided to try this Indian the decor was nice, staff were friendly but too busy, the menu was limited coming from Glasgow we are used to a wider selection. The standard of the food was poor and presentation poor the only good point was the cost. I can't recommend that you try the Gate of India there must be far better restaurants in the area

Been here many times and always had a lovely meal and staff. Were friendly however tonight I have to say food wasn’t good and I had to send the meal back . Made to feel very unwelcome for doing so, therefore I won’t be coming back .

I'd eaten here many years ago......being a vegetarian, the curry I had was wonderful with at least 4 different kinds of vegetables including okra.......On my recent visit for a birthday treat, my friend and I both had different vegetable curries.....basically the vegetable curries consisted of one potatoe.......(potatoe......when you've got rice???? lazy) 2 peas and one green bean.....so basically curry sauce........disgusting rip off.........Not to mention the sour faced waitress hanging around the table putting us off our sauce and rice.........would have been better getting a takeaway curry from the chinese in Aylsham at least it contains vegetables........Buck up your ideas........definitely not a gate worth entering................................

My partner and I ordered a take away and were very disappointed with the end result . We both ordered a chicken curry ( different dishes ) . Both the dishes the chicken was very dry and tough. Part of my chicken was hard . There was little flavour in my dish, and my partner was disappointed in hers also. The only nice bit was the naan bread.

We visited this restaurant over the Easter holidays as it was highly rated in the vistors book at our holiday cottage. Our main waiter was lovely and friendly... but that is the only compliment I can offer (apart from naan breads were quite nice)We ordered: chicken korma - chicken was actually hard, chicken fozli - tasted a bit like a microwave meal, but i have to admit I was so hungry that I ate it (I had been waiting all day for this amazing curry!) My partner had a prawn pathia and I honestly have never seen a pathia like it, there was water floating on the top and no flavour at all. My nephew had a chicken tikka masala and said it was quite nice. My partner complained to our waiter who called the ?manager over. The manager was not apologetic and reluctantly said he would take the pathia off the bill but only after my partner told him we would not be paying full price.We also ordered 4 poppadoms... I am mentioning because when we got the bill we were charged £7.20 for poppadoms which I queried and was told its 90p a poppadom and 90p per head for dips (there were 3 dips). By this point I couldn't be bothered to say that one of us didn't have the dips.I am not sure if we are spolit where we live but our curries are also usually served hot/sizzled prior to being served - these were fairly luke warm.So for the 4 poppadoms, 3 curries, 3 naan bread, 2 rice and 4 soft drinks we paid £62, which is quite expensive compared to [very tasty] curries where we live in the Midlands.

Usually a great experience with great Staff and food. But I went in to grab a couple of nann breads and the quality of the nans were no where near as good as the usual ones. But over all a good restaurant and would recommend

I live locally and ceased using this restaurant over a year ago due to poor quality food and service. Tonight I thought it was time for another go, as a takeaway - disaster.

Came here on Friday night with friends as staying at the black boys pub a few doors down and been told this Indian is popular!On arrival waited a while before we were given menus and asked if we wanted drinks .All four of us ordered the same drinks when the first two came the waiter handed them straight to the men! Waiter was abrupt when ordering and when food came they dumped it on the table! Food hmm king prawns on purée absolutely no taste and hard and chewy and bread was hard to cut and chew!Mains mediocre at best again not much flavour Side orders cold and tasteless.We were not asked if we wanted any more drinks and when we paid the bill there was no thank you or even a smile ! Never again Ate in the black boys pub the next night food was amazing !!

6 of us arrived for our table booking at 6.30 on a Saturday evening, with one other table already sat down in the restaurant enjoying poppadoms.

We usually eat in the restaurant and always enjoy the food and the attentive staff however on this occasion we had a takeaway and the food was still hot by the time we got it home. Prompt service when collecting.

Tried this place a few weeks ago (takeaway) after moving into the area,i was hopeful as the restaurant was busy, .....definitely WON'T be returning. The food was bland, naans & rice overcooked and stale and the worst dish of all was the disgusting inedible lamb jalfrezi,the lamb was doner kebab meat!!!!! And full of raw onions. On the whole avoid at all costs.Horrible experience and we all had bad tummys the following day.

You can't beat a good Indian meal and this restaurant does it all right. We hadn't booked a table, but on a Wednesday night at about 7pm it wasn't a problem for the two of us. However the restaurant did soon fill up, so if there is a group of you it might be worth booking. The menu offers all of the traditional Indian dishes, we enjoyed poppadoms, vegetable biryani, chicken balti and peshwari naan. The food came quickly and was very tasty. We've found in the past that some Indian restaurants poach their chicken which we don't like the texture of, but the chicken here was delicious. We weren't tempted by a dessert (looked like the typical pre-made ice creams) but did enjoy the little chocolate with our bill! We paid about £30 for our food and a couple of beers each. Would definitely go back.

A warm friendly welcome was received on arrival and despite 2 of our group being 30mins late we were not rushed to order or rushed out of the door at the end of the night. The service was fantastic our hosts friendly and helpful and the food fantastic. The only minor problem and it is minor was that the tables are a little small and with 5 of our group of 6 being slightly above average size things were a little snug.

We had a very poor couple of meals here several years ago so hadn’t visited since then. But, things change and we thought we’d try again but for a takeaway as service was never a strong point.

We had a meal here yesterday and enjoyed the food, the breads were fantastic and the curries delicious. Our waiter was very attentive and kind and we really appreciated the hospitality. We were horrified when a group of around ten people at a table near us started mocking the waiter to his face because his speech was affected (which we did not pry about as it’s frankly rude) and they misheard him and corrected him and did horrible impressions of him. He was extremely gracious and kind throughout their treatment of him and it broke my heart. I am writing this review in the hope that one of these people will read it and realise how absolutely shameful and cruel their behaviour towards him was. I am also writing this review to highlight how professional and lovely this waiter was and to thank him for such brilliant service. We will be back. I hope those awful people never return, nobody deserves to be treated that way. Thank you again for a lovely meal :)

First impressions count and sadly we were disappointed by our meal last Thursday evening. The chicken tikka madras was requested to be “spiced up to half vindaloo” and it was, sadly, very mild. I was laughed at when I ordered my food, and asked in a patronising manner if I’d like chicken tikka masala “like all the English ladies!” My husband nearly choked on the beer he was enjoying as we ordered our food, as actually I love very flavoursome, spicy food. Sadly, I didn’t receive either, even though it was from the special list. The most disappointing part of the experience was the treatment from the older gentleman who took the order. Quite patronising.

The family all got together for my sisters 70th Birthday and hired some Holiday barn at Wickmere near Aylsham.The Gate of India restaurant was highly recommended in the literature supplied by the owner of the barns and having read the reviews which were generally good we decided to order a take away for everyone rather than going out to eat. Unfortunately all 15 of us were very disappointed with our fayre.

As usual great service friendly staff and good consistent food come here often and just like the lovely atmosphere always a pleasant night and good food
