Popped into the takeaway one on cheepside on mon 5th of feb around 12.50 as had an appointment at 2pm and wanted a quick snack. When I walked in the guy behind the counter was serving someone with a big order, there was nobody else in apart from me. When the big order had left he came to me and asked me what I wanted. I said a cone of chips and he said 1.60 please. He took a 2 pound coin off me, gave me 40p back and then disappeared in the back. I thought he was waiting for fresh chips but then 2 teenagers came in and he served them with chips! I was just about to ask if he had forgotten my order when my phone rang. The guy came back to me and I put my hand up to indicate I was on the phone. When I ended the call he asked me what I wanted! I said I'm still waiting for my cone of chips! He got the chips, handed them to me and said that's 1.60! Unbelievable, the guy needs to attend a memory clinic! He actually accused me of not paying! Won't be calling there again anytime soon!

Ordered takeout on Just Eat. The Fish was more like a fishfinger and was hard and dry. The chips were burnt on the outside raw inside. Cost me over £16 Expensive badly cooked food

We order from here all the time now, we did visit the place often pre lockdown. I can only recommend people try it. Its worth it.

Called today whilst in town for a takeaway battered sausage and chips, what a mistake. Service was lovely but the chips were clearly poor quality potatoes, only lukewarm, dry and battered sausage was clearly cheap quality and dripping with oil. Tables outside dirty and surrounded by pigeons, wouldn't let me dog eat from there.

Ordered through JustEat for delivery, arrived within the hour, excellent quality fish and chips, would definitely recommend.

Called about 6.30 pm prior to a football match between PNE and Barnsley. Good reasonably priced food and 5 stars for hygene. Had fish and chip specials for £5.85 each including coffee and peas. Fish and chip gorgeous. Large chunky cod perfectly cooked. Would go again next time we are in Barnsley. I have not seen fish and chips for this price recently even for a takaway. Keep up the good work. (Note - restaurant was within 30 minutes of closing and only one person on duty doing cooking, serving and taking payment - so some aspects of service a little slow. Food was cooked to order and the guy very friendly)

I came in to eat here with my family the other day service was lovely was greeted by a lovely waitress my experience here was wonderful I will definitely be recommending to my family and friends

Food is excellent and the service is even better a lovely girl called Gemma served us she was so polite and couldn’t do enough will definitely visit again

We weren’t intending to eat out but as we walked past the smell drew us in. Family of four all thought the chunky chips were really good. My fish wasn’t huge but still, really good. Staff were great, very friendly and even saved us some money suggesting that we ordered the special as it was cheaper than off the menu and the drink was included 😎.

My wife and I visited a rather empty 'Gary's Fisheries' restaurant, in Eldon Street, Barnsley, last Sunday, whilst en route back from the North East. The first thing that I noticed, upon entering the establishment, was a rather confusing smell of fish and mustiness. The decor of the establishment seemed to be rather tired and the wall mirrors somewhat grubby. The service, however, was polite and the portions of Fish and Chips were, to be fair, quite generous. The gentleman who served us appeared to be wearing, as we paid at the conclusion of our meal, a slightly dirty chefs uniform. During our meal, two lady customers came in but very quickly left for reasons best known to them. I suspect that this place is in need of serious refurbishment and I can only imagine what someone like Gordon Ramsay would say if it was featured on his television programme 'Kitchen Nightmares'.

Manager kicked us out after he took our money ...we were intending to eat in coz it was wet and cold...it was only 7.45pm...on internet says it closes at 9pm.....very disappointed..poor customer service..Will not be going there again.....I will be going to the new MacDonald...

Called today and went for the fish and chips £3.50 offer Food was nice , however there was at best only 10 chips and fish was mostly batter With at least another 5 childhood in town and another 10 on outskirts I can't see me calling again soon

Arrived in Barnsley from Manchester for three day business trip.Called in here after hard day a work and before climbing hills to hotel lol. Great service from waiter -Lubberly? - a Sikh boy who was really good. Food very substantial and nice clean environment

My car was in the Garage so I was walking around town and decided to Try Gary's. I had fish N chips with a side of coleslaw. The fish was ok but batter not great but the coleslaw was not home made but either tescos or Asda smart price. Very young waitresses clearly to limit paying minimum wage won't be recommending or returning

Popped in to the takeway one saturday afternoon whilst in barnsley. They have some really good meal deals on, fairly priced. Really nice and well cooked - well for fish and chips anyway :)

Decided to go sit in the restaurant opposed to takeaway, waitress who seated us just mumbled, literally could not hear a word she said. I asked for a pukka pie and instead of telling me they didn't do pukka pies they just brought me some random homemade pie which would have been fine if they'd actually told me before it came... asked for ketchup twice, a separate waitress just went off and sat down with people talking instead of getting it when she said she would, and was the same when asking for the bill waited ten minutes until I stood up and went to the till myself, when she finally noticed. If it was busy I would have understood but was one of three customers in... wouldn't go back. I guess it's only Barnsley though

Delicate batter, chunky chips and excellent price, well worth a visit Staff are friendly and good service.

We go here often and got know the owner Gary, what a fantastic custormer service these guys have very attentive and everytime we go past the fish shop our little girl shouts him and everytime gets a reply. We first went into the restaurant and wow the decor is lovely very clean and cosy, the food was 10/10 fish was really nice with the chips not to mention the price is very very reasonable even for drinks... but when we are passing you can't beat a cone of chips from here. Thank You

We found this little gem of a fish restaurant by accident,and decided to try it out one lunchtime.Firstly, the staff are really friendly.A lovely lady was waiting outside and kindly escorted us into the restaurant. Our waitress was attentive and kept checking everything was alright.Secondly, our meal was wonderful. We both had a 'special' meal of fish and chips, bread and butter,beans and a huge pot of tea, plus a dessert of apple pie and custard - all for £5.99. Bargain!

Love to pop into Gary's when I'm around town for something to eat, where else can you get a nice bit of fish, some chips and peas a pot of tea for just under 5£.The food is good, the service is fast, free wifi.

It was nice to visit Gary's fisheries restaurant, also has take away meals. I was able to get glutenfree fish which was lovely and white, very tasty. I'll go there again.

Having decided on fish and chips for lunch, we passed a couple of restaurants that were full. So obviously popular. We stubbled across Gary's and ventured in after being greeted on the street by one of their staff members offering meal deals. It is a massive place and not many people inside. We were doubtful! The interior and exterior is dated and certainly needs an update and a good clean. However, the food was good, hot and very reasonably priced. The tartare sauce was of a poor quality as was the coffee, which was disappointing.

still got my kebab & chips in front of me..chips not too bad but the kebab what can i say ..uncooked/ quarter inch thick peices of something [never seen kebab meat] asked for it well wrapped got 1 peice of paper and a carrybag stunk my bus home to high heaven..needed a quick meal instead of cooking ended up using as much gas and electric..beware cost £2.99 ripoff

today we visited garys with my sister for dinner ,,,meals consisted of Scampi with salad and dressings ,,2nd was Chicken,chips peas,,,3rd was homemade meat pie chips and peas all with refreshments ,1 cider,,one very cold orange,,and 1 latte all was served quickly and very hot by a very courteous lady ,,,,after meal gary very kindly put a ramp down so my husband could negociate step outside and thanked us for our custom from start to finish our experience was excellent and we will be regular customers from herewith

I love that I can get a cheap meal that fills me and makes me feel satisfied, love the American shaker too

Popped in by mistake really and ended up eating, Glad I did as fish and chips were very good. Light batter looked pale but tasted lovely.

Visited this restaurant on a number of occasions. Standards as always are high. Staff friendly and helpful. Had the fish and chips as usual. Batter somewhat lacking in body and on this occasion we could have got better and bigger from my local takeaway. Won't give up just yet though. Will deffo try again.

delighted as this is my second visit, always lovely friendly staff so obliging, offer fish huge chips and peas side order and pot of tea, lovely, not busy nice and peaceful really, the fish melted in your mouth, just a great value at 4,95 wow, you could have scamy too, or a spicy chicken with salad , a few offers, just lovely, and was there in a few mins , everything spot on , they have the finger on the pulse, its great, go and give it a whirl then you could pop over to pics or civic too nice end to a retail day

Came here while staying in Barnsley, wanted some Fish & Chips while we were out and about shopping. We stopped by here as I've Been before and I remember it been a good price and good food.Service was friendly, food came out fast and it tasted good. It came with a pot of tea, or coffee or a soft drink, Fish and Chips and a side of mushy peas all for just under a fiver. They had a few meal deals yo choose from, pie and chips etc...GREAT VALUE

Called today for the first time, the restaurant had one person in dining, but to be fair it was 2pm when we called, the waitress said they had been busy at lunch time.Garys fisheries has 2 entrances, one for take away orders, the other for the restaurant, we ordered 2 fish, chips, & peas, along with 2 slices bread / butter, plus a pot of tea for 2.The meal was cooked on order, we found the fish nice, being the batter was thin & nice & crisp, the chips were fresh chipped potatoes, not frozen, with sloppy peas. The pot of tea gave about 4 cups of tea, very large cups, could have done with 3 tea-bags instead of the 2 in the pot, We found the meal was good for the price, being £5.15p per person, a special mention to how clean the restaurant was, every thing was spotless, we took note were the kitchen / dining room was very clean, plus also the toilets were very clean.We found very good service from the waitress, always being attentive to our needs.

Brilliant glutenfree fish and chips and fantastic service. Other great food too, loved it. Will be using this sit in or take away fish shop in future when I visit Barnsley again.

Dined here several times. Staff friendly. Food lovely and well priced. This is definately worth a visit when you are in Barnsley.

I often dine at Gary's when I stay at my mum's. We often pop in for something to eat at lunchtime when we are shopping. We have always enjoyed the food and found the service excellent, with the staff being friendly, and the food is freshly made to order. The atmosphere is good due to the popularity of this restaurant with locals and the décor is contemporary and clean. The 'specials' are particularly good value for money (including the 'senior's' special) and they are fully satisfying meals.

Me and my family went to Gary's restaurant as we are regulars at the takeaway opposite the Alhambra centre and thought we would give it a try, it did not disappoint!! The service was so friendly we felt like we were at home, the food I would say was fairly priced but you pay for quality which I don't mind. Overall we all enjoyed our food and being big fans of traditional fish and chips, the restaurant along with the takeaway at the other end are the best I've ever tasted... Keep up the good work Gary!!!!

Five of us had a late lunch.The food was average. Small portion of mushy peas which weren't very hot.Fish ok and decent size.The two pensioners in our party were regulars and were happy with their pensioners special.The other three of us found the fact that separate pricing rather than an all inclusive price made it a bit expensive.The service was good and friendly enough.The restaurant is nicely decorated.I won't rule out going again but I have to say I've had better fish and chips at Morrison's cafe.

Lovely meal,plenty of choice, clean, tidy and very efficient. Have been here a fair few times even with adults with disabilities and couldn't have asked for better service.
