Garden Restaurant in Southampton

We live over totton and none of our Chinese places was open… so I decided to order from here and it’s the worst mistake I’ve done changing my Chinese the food was stale and hard bits in the noodles… the noodles only had around 3 pieces of chicken in. We found noodles in the sweet and sour chicken. It tasted as if had been left on the side for a few days never ever again!

lovely little restaurant, always has the kindest servers, always clean and the food is delicious! the portions are always enormous too, so we often have to pack food up to take home 😂 i highly recommend this place, the prices are perfect for the portions they give and the consistent high quality of the food!

What a beautiful place. Such a relaxed evening me and my family had at this place. They have a beautiful garden at the back as well which is well maintained and clean. The food was fab, all worth the price. I definitely recommend this place if you want to try some real authentic Chinese food.

2nd time I have been here and I personally would say it's the best Restaurant in Southampton. Amazing flavours. Edit: Not the Same Restaurant it used to be, as soon as the Food came out I realized something wasn't right. It's now Under New Management I won't eat there again!!!!!!

Went here on a weekend at lunch time it was quiet, the food was really good and great vibes throughout. The service was a little slow when finishing our meal but overall I would go again.

We went here this evening for my husbands birthday treat and we we not disappointed . The food was fresh and plentiful & service exemplary. They even brought out birthday cake with a candle free of charge. Will defo be going back

The restaurant was very clean, there was comfortable seating and the staff were really friendly. The portion sizes were very good and prices reasonable. Quite a few interesting dishes along with classics. My only criticism would be the lack of vegetarian options. Almost all the dishes had some meat in.

Came here on the spare of a moment during the week. It was lovely and quiet and was warmly welcomed to a table. Service was polite and friendly and the food was tasty, hot and well presented. As it is a Chinese restaurant it offered an extensive range of Chinese dishes, there was a lot to choose from. As a party of two we did go a bit crazy with how many things we ordered, but the dishes were not extortionate in price. Per head we spent around £30 each but we could have easily spent less if we had been more conservative with ordering. They did take away and as well as dine in. Food was reasonably priced for the portion size. As this was some where I had not visited before I was pleasantly surprised and would visit again, especially around lunch time mid-week when it seemed to be quiet. The only issue I had was finding somewhere nearby to park, ended up parking down a side street.

Such an amazing Chinese meal! 5/5 service as well! My wife and I have taken friends and family here and it is always a hit, I would recommend highly to people that are interested in Chinese food

I rate this a five out of five for sure pleasant interior and nice welcoming vibe service with a smile and the best bit… the most delicious food very reasonably priced. Lots of authentic dishes, not your average Chinese menu.The waitress was very kind to enquire about spice levels in the dishes we ordered because we had children in our party.

We ordered chicken satay starter, it was 50% oil, revolting, chicken was tough too. Duck rolls were average, not worth the cost. Enough hoi sin sauce for just half the rolls as well. Chicken in black bean was bland, the sauce was no thicker than tap water . More red and green pepper chunks than chicken. The pork rice had more egg in it than pork, the rice was black and had a strange taste. The king prawn curry was inedible. I popped a prawn into my mouth as I was serving (feeling very hungry) and it was like paste, not a firm prawn as it should have been. I looked at the dish, the prawns looked like they had been cooked and reheated several times, they were mush! I rubbed a tablespoon against them and they all squished, obviously not worth even trying to eat more, I didn’t want food poisoning! There was as many lumps of boiled potatoes in the curry as prawns as well, WTF?! Unless you want to be seriously ill don’t order food from here. After eating just 1 prawn I was up dashing to the bathroom with diarrhoea 10 hours after eating it. I wouldn’t eat food from this place if it was free! They had the nerve to charge us £55 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 1 rice. I have no idea how this company is in business. I haven’t written a review here for many months, but felt I had to warn potential customers to keep clear because of the dangerous food.

I dropped in for a quick lunch having never been to this restaurant before and I was pleasantly surprised. The food is excellent especially the extensive authentic Chinese part of the menu. The prices are good and the staff where very kind. The welcome I received will ensure I return.

We stayed a few nights in Southampton for a holiday. The first evening when we arrived we had dinner in Garden Restaurant. And we ended up having dinner every evening in that restaurant for the rest of our stay. The food is very delicious and authentic. Service is also very good. And the price is very reasonable. we will definitely go back to Garden Restaurant whenever we will visit Southampton again.

It’s embarrassing, don’t open a restaurant if you can’t afford it😆What else does it mean to eat Thai food if you can’t afford it? Discriminating against others, right? This is a very disgusting business. If you want to eat and be annoyed, just go there quickly😆

We ordered off uber eats, my partner absolutely loves the Singapore rice! Our order arrived we ordered Singapore fried rice, beef fillet and asparagus with black pepper, fried noodle with chicken. They even rang us to say they ran out of asparagus, could they swap it Broccoli to which I said yes, I love Broccoli. We usually order this as we've had great experience but last night we got our order and our fried noodles weren't there, so we rang the uber driver numerous of times but he didn't answer, we rang the restaurant but they didn't seemed bothered at all, just told us to ring the uber driver. So I was left without a meal that I paid for. Absolutely unacceptable and unprofessional. Then once we was in bed that evening my partner became unwell out of nowhere on and off the toilet and throwing up. This is the last time we will be ordering from this restaurant, very upset and disappointed.

Excellent food and customer service, staff very friendly the only downside is the parking but it's worth the walk.

Definitely not the run of the mill Chinese takeaway place. Some real good quality and tasty Chinese dishes, with a very pleasant service. We went there for lunch post the busy hours. There were still customers trickling in at that time. Will visit again and would definitely recommend.

We had lunch here and the steam Sea Bass was perfectly done and fresh. All the rest of the dishes were also very good. We gobbled up all the food before any pictures could be taken. 😅 will definitely come back again to try the other dishes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and the service by the young lady was also very good. 👍🏻

Visited here a bit spur of the moment as we fancied Chinese and very glad we did. All of the dishes we had were lovely, completely different to any other Chinese we have had. Good veggie/vegan options on the menu and they offered to remove the meat from any dish too. We got served by Melissa who was extremely welcoming and helpful. Overall a great experience and we are looking forward to going back to enjoy the garden in the summer and trying some more dishes we’ve never had before.

I recently dined at the Chinese Garden Restaurant, and it was a delightful experience. The sweet and sour dishes, along with the fried rice, were absolutely amazing. Delicious authentic Chinese food. Reasonably priced and great service from the staff, Melissa was very friendly and helpful.

We've eaten in a lot of really excellent Chinese restaurants including many in London and in various parts of China, this restaurant is right up there with the best of them. Really friendly service as well! The menu has a full 'Western' and/or Cantonese menu, and a really extensive authentic Chinese menu, in English with pictures, for dishes from various Chinese regional cuisines such as Sichuan, Hunan and Shaanxi. The portions are large without being ridiculous, the prices are very reasonable, the restaurant is tastefully decorated, and the service is very friendly and professional. The final selling point is the large garden area at the back of the restaurant. Rain or shine you can sit outside under small tents (including a yurt!). Many of the tents house only one table (for small or large groups), and in the tents with multiple covers the tables are well distanced from each other. The outside area feels nicer than it looks from pictures, it's very peaceful, and there's a nice atmosphere with a small water feature trickling away in the background. 10/10, an amazing lunch. We'll definitely be back!!

Evening All, I just wanted to post and say a big thank you to the lovely owner of the Garden Restaurant for making us feel so welcome and the exceptional service (authentic Chinese cuisine ). It is the second time I have been to the Garden Restaurant. The restaurant is under new ownership and the owner is worried about business going slow over the past couple of weeks, I will definitely be going back to support the business. The food was excellent quality and choices, great portions at very good prices considering many places have increased costs and have restricted times you can have in a sitting. I would highly recommend trying the Garden Restaurant. It was was perfect, no rush, good service, lovely owner and delightful food. If you are planning an evening out for Christmas or New Year celebration without being rushed this is a great place, even though it is a little out of the way from the city restaurants, it was worthwhile. Compared to last year the restaurant was pretty empty except for a lot of Just Eat and Deliveroo orders l. This was veshame for a small business and she told us how worried she is getting as business has dropped in the last few weeks as she isn't in town, she had sold up in London and now owns the Garden Restaurant. If you enjoy a good Chinese meal this is the place and value for money. I missed my birthday meal on Saturday due to sickness and we cancelled she told me she makes cakes for a birthday/ anniversaries as a treat, as we have another birthday celebration we will definitely be going back on Saturday. It's a little way from town but if you want a nice evening with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere I would definitely recommend supporting this local business.

The best Sze Chuan food I have tried in the south. We are the regular here and have been eating here regularly since before covid. The Sze Chuan food is very authentic and the service is just right and so is the price. We love the braised meat, spicy fish, dry pot vege (esp cabbage, beans aubergine, cauliflowers). Consistency is always there. Parking is a little hard since they closed the parking next the row of shops. We usually park on the road along McDonald’s. Nothing will stop us for good food:)

Among the various options I've tried in Southampton, Garden Restaurant's rendition of Kung Pao chicken stands out as the closest to its origins. This unique flavor combination is also nicely applied, with a some variation, to their Yuxiang rousi (shredded pork in a sweet and sour sauce). A bit more kick of vinegar would have been better, but overall it’s a satisfactory rendition.

Delicious food cooked fresh and served with warmth and good vibes. Staff are welcoming and friendly they explained the menu and contents to help us choose our order. They have Cantonese style food and also authentic dishes from hunan which are spicy dishes. I tried stir fry beef with hot peppers. They really really good. I very highly recommend this place. Take this review with a pinch of salt (MSG?). If you're looking for a great example of Anglo-Cantonese - and most of you probably are - prepare to be sorely disappointed. The selection that you'll be familiar with is very limited, and of a low quality (although, the Salt & Pepper Chicken was sublime!). If, however, you're looking for a great example of authentic, regional Chinese dishes, then you will be satisfied beyond measure. The restaurant itself is fine, albeit uncomfortably claustrophobic, and the prices middling-to-high. The major standout here was the service, which was attentive without being suffocating, friendly without overstepping the mark, and accommodating beyond what could be reasonably expected. Ultimately, your experience at this restaurant will absolutely be contingent on what you're looking for, and what you value most highly.

Omg don't eat here. Inflated prices, under new management, terrible food, no idea about service and generally a huge rip off disappointment. We will miss the old owners.

Excellent restaurant. Best Chinese ever!

As a foodie with over 40 years dining out all over the world.After reading all these great reviews about this restaurant, I decided to try it out with my wife and a close friend. We were somewhat disappointed to say the least the service was flat and the food inconsistent in temperature and flavour. It was a Saturday night and the kitchen should have been firing on all cylinders but from what we were served you would have thought it was made by a heavy smoking inexperienced chef with an inconsistent palette. The atmosphere was flat too, not sure if we just visited on a bad night, however I don't think we will be visiting this place again. Overrated, mediocre at best.

The kidney and pork belly were not properly handled, very fishy and uncooked, and the stir-fried rice noodles with beef was bland, I hope the chef will not affect the taste of the food because of the pursuit of serving speed. The taste of the food is the first thing.

Visited on a February Friday night, not overly busy but a lovely meal with family for a reasonable price and attentive service. As this was my first visit, I do not know what the restaurant was previously like however I was not disappointed with my visit (and was sceptical after reading other recent reviews). The only negatives I would say are that the menu is quite difficult to navigate, mostly due to the way the pictures and text are structured. Also, my wife is Gluten Free and dietary information was not readily available so we had to take a chance. This may be an issue for Coeliacs or people with allergies instead of intolerances.

This is no longer Garden Restaurant NEW OWNERS! Shockingly bad. Theyre living off of the previous owners good reputation and excellent reviews. Thinking it was still Garden Restaurant I recommended going again today. What a major disappointment to discover its a different more expensive menu made up of overcooked sub standard food by new owners! I went for lunch today with 3 friends, I felt embarrassed that I suggested going there. One of the party specifically asked for no onions in their dish, it arrived with virtually half of the dish containing onions. I will never return. Google reviews should allow users to score ZERO stars but it wont! 0/5 is my score.

Wonderful food! The best Chinese I’ve been to in years - we will be coming back. Highly recommend the chicken dumplings, sweet rice sticks, vegetarian spring rolls (crisp and really fresh), all dishes were delicious. Fabulous staff who clearly care and want you to enjoy your food and time while with them.

We had decided to dine in at heir restaurant and we definitely weren’t disappointed. The service was pretty average but the food was absolutely exquisite, with some much sumptuous flavours and a menu of delights to explore. This is not your typical run of the mill Chinese restaurant, so be prepared to be impressed with all the fantastic and interesting food offerings. Although there isn’t a massive amount of choice for vegetarian foods but they’re highly accommodating and can adapt dishes to meet your dietary requirements.

A great night out with great food, great portion size, great taste. Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants in town. I really enjoyed the Chinese barbeque dish. Highly recommend to Chinese food lovers. We enjoy the night so much my friend even booked a table for their Christmas dinner, too.

This night out was a waste of time and money. My favourite food is oriental food but I would never go to this restaurant again. First off, we couldn't ask our server any questions because we could not communicate with them due to a language barrier. We then ordered 3 overpriced starters that were plain and not enjoyable. We were then brought 2 cans of drink on thier own without any glasses or ice with prices on them marked 75p which we then later found out cost £2.50 each. After eating our starters and all of the prawn crackers to get our moneys worth we then left the restaurant without ordering any mains and then paid the bill of £25 with a mandatory service charge on it. I'm guessing the restaurant has changed owners because it was one of the best around.

We were regular customers there,It was closed there for about 3 weeks.But when we left, we encountered new management and staff.the chefs had changed. Low food quality ، with out any test and The types of food had been changed with all names and were inedible.. it was very disappointing. WE WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN👎

The restaurant staff were really friendly and reasonable. As service was slow offered free round of drinks and money off service charge. The menu has changed since my last visit, possibility it is now change of owners? Sweet sour pork dish, sweet tasted more sour, hint of vinegar and Pak Choy dish disappointed by portion size, smallest vegetables dish I have had outside London. I feel bad the give three staff rating as staff were polite, friendly but food not as fine as it once were.

Awful experience, the garden is very beautiful. The service was absolutely disgraceful. We booked table at 6 pm and has been asked to leave by 7:45pm without any notice because they said they got another reservation booked. When we said we understand but we have to at least finish our wine, the manager (guy wear the glasses)suddenly grab the wine bottle and start to pull in a large amount to each one’s glass without our permission which is ridiculous When we remind him if he pulled too much wine into one person’s glass, other people cannot have their wine for the last toast, i can’t believe he even try pull the wine out from one people’s glass to another people’s glass! This is really disgusting because this is a hygienic problem!!! I can’t even believe this happened to us. I would definitely NOT recommend this restaurant because the poor service.

This was a family get together and my sister's choice of venue. The Chinese menu options were fantastic and you really are spoilt for choice. There is something for everyone. The décor and layout is pleasant, the garden area is amazing. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. The prices were reasonable and I would say value for money.

Lovely looking place with nice and quick service but i have been eating better food before. All dishes where well presented but if we talking about taste of food was vert basic and seasoned very poorly. I have ordered soup where I been given tasteless water with shredding of unrecognised seafood and cornflour. Im giving 3 stars because of taste, authentic and expensive of eating this specyfik cousin.

We were totally disappointed with the bad services rendered by the waiter for our dinner yesterday. We have dined in this restaurant on several occasions with our children and we have got used to ordering non-spicy soup noodles and foods for the children along with our spicy dishes. Unfortunately the two non-spicy soup noodles ordered yesterday turned up to be spicy which were completely different from the photos on the menu of which the soup of the noodle was white colour while the soup in the noodle they put on the table was red in colour with a layer of chilly oil. We informed the waiter for their mistake and requested to change the noodles to non-spicy same as that on the menu which we ordered in our last several occasions as the children cannot eat spicy foods. The waiter declined our request and accentuated that food in this restaurant was Szechuan cuisine which should be spicy and the photos on the menu were just for reference only. During our conversations, he didn’t show his intention to communicate and emphasised he couldn’t understand Cantonese and insisted we had to speak Mandarin. The waiter neither took any remedial actions nor did any management staff came out to solve the problem with the children’s dishes. We feel very disappointed as they did not and would not rectify their mistake with the children’s order and showed a very arrogant attitude towards their customers. We will never choose this restaurant again, as there are many choices of Szechuan cuisine restaurant offering the same standards of food but with customer service far higher and where the customer comes first and their needs are paramount…

Seems like a nice place, but a issue between the boss and a Uber rider back n forth was no need for it, I kind of wanted to leave as I was with my children….. but everything else was good….

Great food, and fantastic value for money. Used by the Chinese community therefore must have authentic Chinese dishes too. The garden was a real surprise, next time I think I'd like to have my meal in the garden.

The food is reasonably good, but the portions are relatively small. In the summer, try to book a table at the back garden. It's quite nice. I personally prefer open air rather than the Yurt. Can't stand the smell. But, that's my personal preference.

The sesame prawn toast was thick and juicy. The best I have ever had.

What a little gem absolutely fantastic food and lovely staff

Yesterday was my first time here, I am not of English nationality I come from a country where the gastronomy is impeccable and you rarely eat badly in a restaurant, and I can see when I am going to have a bad experience in a place just by lookin at the environment the menu was dirty sticky (bad sign I preferred not to think about how the kitchen would be and I prayed to God not to leave intoxicated) one of the people who attended us smelled of tobacco, I ordered fried noodles with meat, the meat already looked bad and smelled strange even sticky, I'm just glad I didn't order more than that because my whole experience was not very recommendable, even though one of the waiters and in general the service was good, maybe I had the bad luck to have food in that state and the other plates are good? I will never know because I will never go back to this place, sorry.

Not surprised that the overwhelming majority of reviews are positive, but I am amazed that there are a couple of reviews that criticise the food. I know my food - often eat in Michelin star restaurants and in particular I have been to China and eaten authentic Chinese food. The food here is very good - we travel 12 miles each way (driving past several lacklustre Chinese restaurants en route) to get takeaways from here, and we have also eaten in the restaurant and recieved very good service. Definitely recommend it.

Dined first time at this restaurant and it was an overall positive experience. Food was all freshly prepared, authentic and prices are very reasonable. Service was good and food served quickly. There’s outdoor unique dinning rooms, a small garden and parking available at the back of the restaurant.
