Garbutts Bar in Kingston upon Hull, City of

unbelievably disappointing. the food was bland and tasteless, my bagel was soggy and hash browns really mushy, the loaded fries were SWIMMING in oil and grease. at no point did any member of staff ask how the meal was or if everything was okay. unfortunately we will absolutely not be returning. the only plus side is instead of the predicted 45 min wait, it was 20.

We recently visited after countless positive reviews and recommendations from friend & family, and overall I would say that we left the restaurants feeling rather disappointed. The menu choices were great (plenty of meats, fishes, seafood, vegetarian/vegan options, etc.) and the staff were friendly and helpful. The vibe was chilled, and you felt comfortable at your table. We ordered 3 burgers (2 with meat, 1 with Halloumi), and had to wait for almost 40 minutes - yet there were only 2 other tables dining in. When the food did arrive (finally), it was only just warm and the portion was stingy (no more than 15 chips per portion). The Garbutt's Burgers: great flavour, very meaty, good quantity of onions, gherkins, etc., but the Nduja overpowered the beef burger flavour...... The Hot Honey Halloumi Burger: lacked in flavour, there was no 'hot honey/spicy flavour whatsoever, the Halloumi was anaemic and the portion looked charred and the temperature of the burger was luke-warm at best.My son's girlfriend has just re read the menu and realised she didn't get the caramelised onion or chill jam - 1st photo is what she got (2nd stock photo) was what she was expecting? Overall, 3/5 stars. Atmosphere, food & drinks choices, quality of ingredients, etc. are all very good. Portion sizes, speed of service, prices, etc. all need to improve...

We booked Garbutts Bar for our daughters 21st Birthday on Friday 5th April. What a fantastic venue! We had the place to ourselves from 630pm for our party of around a 100 people. Nothing was too much trouble for the exceptional staff and Rachael made everything so easy from the initial booking to the actual night and was very accommodating. We ordered the mixed platters and extras which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. If you need a venue that ticks all the boxes then i would highly recommend Garbutts

I had beer battered fish and chips with mushy peas and it was really nice nice atmosphere staff are really friendly the service is really good

I used to rave about how brilliant Garbutts was. I'm really disappointed to say I won't be going again. I can only assume they have a new chef, because it was honestly the blandest food I've ever tasted. I cannot fathom the effort it would take to remove so much flavour from a meal; we had four different dishes and all four tasted of absolutely nothing. On top of this, it's far too bright in there to have an intimate meal, the music is far too loud and all chatter echoes so hard that you have to shout to hear each other speak. What on earth happened to this place? They still have lovely staff, which is the only thing that stops this being a one star review.

Of all the bars on Prince Avenue this is the smartest. The service is good and the interior is clean and well designed. We especially appreciated the cosy ambience created by the soft warm lighting. Our full English breakfast was a good feed though neither of us ate the black pudding and we'd have preferred a better quality tastier sausage. Quality not quantity? We don't come here that often but every time there's been the same background music playing. Its inoffensive MOR but hearing it played on every visit creates a strange feeling of deja-vu.

Great atmosphere, great staff and great food. Lunch and a beer before football. Will definitely call again.

Loved this bar for years. Staff always friendly, attentive and courteous. Always a pleasure to pay a visit and the food is always exceptional. Well worth a visit if you’ve not been.

Popped in for couple of pints and some lunch staff are super friendly and the food was great decor and music all fab look forward to visiting again!

Visited today with a friend and grateful they had cider on tap along with all their impressive and tasty cocktails. We had food, friend had hallumi burger and I chose the Garbutts sharing platter ( no sharing ) and I was not disappointed .. cheese fest. I'm not normally a pattie fan ( I know sacrilege as a Hull born) but the pattie bin bons were devious, light and not over seasoned. The large onion rings were wonderful and the cheese..all the cheese . I was not a fan of the crackers, different colours and flavours but that was personal. Pannin Lovely. Staff friendly, happy and enjoying their jobs . Drinks on the pricey side but food made up for it . Will visit again and again .

We arrived after not visiting for a good while. We ordered the special from the chalk board- lamb, feta, pitta, ciabatta, sun-dried tomatoes, salad, hummus, tazicki, roasted red peppers all on a wooden board with a cup of hot fresh chips! We couldn’t fault this dish, if we were being picky, there was no onions but that is probably just us! We can’t wait to come back and try the chicken version!

Visited a couple of times.once with my partner & sister in law & once with friends. On both occasions I had the halloumi skewers. They are very nice & tasty but I would say you need an extra skewer. 2 is not really amble. My partner & friends all enjoyed their food choices & their portion sizes was really good. I will definitely go back. Service is great .

Great to be back. Every thing was brilliant. The service was prompt Happy attentive and friendly staff. The place was spotless ! And the food is amazing not just for what we paid. But really stood out as fresh made in house proper food. Looking forward to to going again. ( wish I’d taken pictures sorry)

We decided to get the tapas style menu to share. It was by far the best we have ever tasted. We kept saying we won’t eat all that but we managed. Love the new decor and selection of draught beers.

I have eaten lunch here lots of times, however yesterday’s experience was very different to previous. The staff were fine, however some of the beers were not available, no specials board and there was a question about some of the availability of some menu staples....

Have been here numerous times and the food etc has been good. This time had to change a fork due to dried food still on it; another female had the same problem who was not with our party.We ordered garlic bread which consisted of a chopped Ciabatta with margarine and NO GARLIC.We ordered chicken skewers, my chicken was dry and no taste of Cajun; no sauce at all.Friend ordered same with BBQ sauce but nothing spectacular.The staff were good and quickly changed the forks and apologised. When asked if food was good we commented on the garlic bread and he said he would tell the chef but nothing further came of it.Not sure if changed hands...It will be a while before we return...

The food was as usual lovely except for one out of 6. However I had booked a table and when I arrived no table had been booked according to staff. Luckily it wasn't busy. One bar staff occasionally helped by a girl from the kitchen is ridiculous. We therefore only had one drink. Twice one of us joined the queue with no hope of being served. The place needs managing. Decided to visit as I'd heard it served nice food.All seats we're taken outside which seemed a good sign. We sat inside which there was allot of seats free as it was warm everyone wanted to be in the sun. One other family sat near by ordered the same time as us. We ordered sandwiches and they took over 35 mins to come. When they arrived they looked nice, but the meatballs were so over cooked they were rock hard. ( we did mention it to the staff and show them) I had a chicken avacado ciabatta and my ciabatta was really hard the chicken was over cooked. The Crisps where nice and the salad garnish and sauce over the salad was tasty. I wouldn't visit again as I personally work in a café and would not dare send bread or sandwiches out like that. Its a shame with all the previous good reviews. The family near by also had there food late nearly 50, mins and wasn't impressed.Clearly somthing has gone wrong since they used to be great hopefully in time it will return to being great.

I've been a regular at Garbutts since it first opened. There have been some lows since Aidey and Andy sold it, but today was a new low. New manager seems to be more interested in getting his thug mates in and giving them free drinks than actually running the place. The staff, however, are fantastic. Sadly I won't be setting foot in the place again.

This has always been my favourite place on Prinny to eat but what's gone wrong? I visited on Sunday and opted for the Sunday lunch, it was average to say the least, the veg was bland and the beef overcooked. Only recently I gave Garbutts a five star review on FB for the excellent food but not this week I'm afraid. I've managed to give an average but only because I'm hoping it was an off day otherwise it would have received a poor.

Very disappointed came in on Friday with a group of friends for fizz Friday normally purchasing a bottle each and omg no £9 99 fizz we left and went elsewhere!!!You really need to change your website as we checked on Friday it still says this promotion false advertising!!

Don’t rely on the website for getting a good Prosecco deal. It’s not valid anymore, apparently new owners but not their website! Friday fizz deal does not exist. Walk a bit further down the street to Pearson’s for you Friday Fizz deal.

if there's a big game on and you're on Prinny Ave, this is the go to place! The set up is great, especially if you get a booth with a TV. I love this place on game day :) Drinks are reasonable as far on Prinny goes.....cool layout too.

This was our first visit to Garbutts and I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food. All 4 of us enjoyed our meals which proved to be good value for money and arrived hot and tasty. The drinks menu was also varied and this is the perfect place to meet to eat and drink.

Never been here before, i has the chicken gyros. The chicken was tasty, the service was excellent and tbh I couldn’t fault the place one bit. 10/10 - can see whey it gets so many good reviews. Will definitely come back

Have been coming to Garbutts for years, almost weekly. Loved the old menu with the veggie lasagne - great for vegetarians. Service usually impeccable, and the ladies and gent behind the bar are so 'on the ball'.

Food is cooked to perfection, very tasty and alot of choice on the menu. I had a steak sand which and it was lovely very nice restaurant to. Would recommend!

Really nice tasty food and a good selection on the menu! Not too expensive either. Only downside was it was a bit too noisy for trying to have a meal but this is to be expected on a Friday evening and would book earlier next time :)

Went here after a visit to the deep in Hull. The food was delicious and the service was second to know. The chicken skewers in satay sauce were superb and could have eaten a second portion of them if it wasn’t time to leave, which we didn’t want to do. My partner had the Garbutts burger which was also superb.

my mum is currently in hospital at Hull Hospital and we were visiting her, we decided to venture out as she needed some sleep. I went onto trip advisor for a look for somewhere to eat, I scrolled down and stumbled across this place, All I will say is I wish we had something like this near where we live.

Every visit to Garbutts, you know the food will be excellent , visited on a Sunday lunch, as a couple. My partner had the steak pie and I decided on the special turkey ciabatta off the menu board. The chips were hot and well done and 'proper '. The pie was homemade and tender beef. All in all, could not fault it

My sister and I visited Garbutts for lunch yesterday. Having visited so many times in the past and been happy with the food, this time was a totally different experience. I’m not sure if it has changed hands/chef. They served us food which was so burnt (as you will see from the photos) that it was frankly inedible. I really cannot believe they thought it was acceptable to serve it up! Nobody came over to ask if everything was ok, as they usually do, so we had to get the attention of a staff member to complain. He took our food to show the chef and came back and offered us a drink! We were drinking lime and soda because we were both driving. It should have been a full refund and an apology from the chef. My sister has booked her work Christmas meal at Garbutts for the past 3 years but she will not be booking it here again.

Food was amazing had the Garbutts burger fish and chips kids hot dog and kids goujons cant complain about the food it was so tasty but the service was shocking had to wait 20 mins for latte when the food come out I was waiting for cutlery for 5 mins which I had to ask in the end which I think was the manger with glasses she was so rude and unprofessional which is not a Good way to keep the standards up if that’s your manager

Had a good meal, but was refused a dessert because we went to the bar at 7:02 and they stop serving at 7:00, even though they were still bringing meals out after this time. Definitely won't be going back.

So many cafe bars and restuarants are not able to sustain the great quality of food from first opening....Garbutts has and I am so pleased it has. I eat here regularly and the food is gorgeous. A number of the staff have been there awhile too, they are all friendly and happy to help with anything.

Barmaid put drinks on the bar gin and a pint ,passed her the note and knocked the pint over accidentally and I wasnt drunk but said I would be charge twice which I thought was a bit harsh but accepted this however she charged me for both drink twice saying the pint went into the gin aswell which I feel wasnt correct , 18 quid for 2 drink and the attitude on the barmaid was horrendous will ot be going back and I'm a local aswell

The food is spot on, good sized portions, homecooked,nicely presented. Fairly good value for money. It was quite noisey as it was a Saturday afternoon, so we packed. The manager who took our food / drink order was a little rude and didn’t give us the service we expected in a restaurant of this nature.

Went with OH for our lunch on bank holiday Monday. We were quite early so it was very quiet as we arrived but it started to get busier by the time we left at around 1pm.

A family gathering to celebrate a double birthday. The meal was delivered to all guests all together, the meals were excellent ribi steak was done to perfection and so we're the chicken skewer's. Excellent venue well worth a visit

Uncle had visited a few days ago so we decided to give it a go. There was a bit of a wait for the food but it was well worth the wait. Music is not usually welcome but the selection playing was pleasant. Will come again.

Me and the wife enjoyed a nice lunch sat on the terrace outside garbutts I enjoyed the southern fried chicken and my wife had a meatball sandwich! Very nice food and staff can’t fault it !

Staff were efficient, friendly and very apologetic when they didn’t have the wine we wanted. They brought the soda water in a jug of ice while we waited about 10 mins. The beer garden is a wonderful sun trap.

We visited on a Sunday evening when things were pretty quiet, yet we waited far too long for our meal. My partner and I order different meals, both containing chicken, diced in one case and a full breast in the other. Both were well overcooked to the point of being difficult to cut through and chewy to eat. This was our first visit for quite some time when we had previously christened it 'garbage bar'... Needless to say won't be returning.

Went here for Lunch on a Saturday, quick service, good and tasty food. Not a very extensive menu, but a good variety makes up for this. prices are in line with the rest of the area and portions are of a decent size.

Sat in garbutts been several times intact regularly been sat 20 minutes it's empty been told we have to wait 10 minutes for our meal ! I could have cooked it quicker ! A problem with tills and no wine menu apparently . Not what we expected such a shame !!! Maybe give it a miss next time

Sunday lunch. It wasn’t particularly busy, a few people outside as the sun was out. Waited 50 minutes for a tuna steak and a ribeye steak. Tuna was tiny and mediocre; ribeye was ordered medium but was burnt and crispy. Staff member said they have a tiny kitchen with two people working. What’s it like on a busy day?

It's been about a year since I last ate here so thought I would revisit because it was previously always very good. Ordered the San Francisco burger mainly because it's served with avocado which I love. I think it cost around £12 because I opted for changing potato chips to sweet potato chips at an additional cost. Food arrived, large portion yet no avocado. Member of staff apologised and returned with a pot of sliced avocado. Unbelievably they had served me with avocado that was not ripe and totally inedible! I mentioned this to same member of staff when he returned to collect the plates, he apologised and brought me a free drink. My friends meal was ok and the rest of my meal was ok, but with the numerous other pubs located within the avenues it's not a place that I am likely to return to in the near future, which is a real shame because it used to be a real favourite of mine for good pub food.

Ordered a classic burger. Asked do you want skinny or thick chips. Errrm thick please. When it come i took one look and nearly cried. The thick chips had skins on them. I hate them and was never told. The burger came in ciabatta bread. No mention of it anywhere. Not on the menu or from the barstaff.is this the only eatery in the world that serves a burger in ciabatta. I hate ciabatta bread. The burger was hardly moist but the red sauce dampened it and the salad had a terrible dressing on it. So the food is shocking but the pubs ok ive been drinking in there years

I have reviewed Garbutts a few times now and always given 5 stars. Again the atmosphere and food were really good. We arrived around 5.45 and the ladies in the group were sharing pitchers. We then went onto cocktails. When we went to order more cocktails at 10pm we were disappointed to be told they weren't doing anymore'cos they wanted to get cleared up. Poor customer service really. Wasn't as if we'd just walked in. Maybe they should have a sign up saying "cocktails only served 'til 10pm"

Lovely little gem down princes ave. great atmosphere and the pulled pork nachos were to die for. Looking forward to my next visit

Had one of the best burgers ive ever had (The Garbutt Burger) will definatly will be going again. It was also a nice atmosphere.

Good place for lunch and even though they don’t look like a child friendly place they were very tolerant of ours and our friends young one. Good food, good beer, goot atmosphere

Ordered meal ,waited 35 minuets, all our friends had nearly finished their meals ,so I went to talk to the staff and they said it would be ready soon.

As usual excellent food friendly staff and reasonable prices. All food fresh and prepared on site. Not delivered frozen and nuked in a microwave. Having eaten in many places around hull still not found better.

My friend and I visited for a catch up lunch today & we certainly made the right choice!! From walking in and receiving welcoming smiles and informal chat to the delivery of our most delicious toasted ciabattas - it was all faultless!

Mediterranean deli platter was a joke. 1.5 slices of halloumi, tiny pot of hummus, and lots of sundried tomatoes and olives. By lots l mean that we left it nearly all of it as it is impossible to eat it only sundried tomatoes with bread for your meal out and thats for £10. We had a chicken&tadziki; wrap as well, which was a good quality for a price. Service was pleasant enough, but dont think l'll be coming back.

Garbutts has always been a firm favourite of mine when it comes to eating down the avenues however my recent visit left me feeling disappointed. Firstly when we arrived the restaurant was empty and despite this we were not greeted by the two members of staff who continued to stand talking behind the bar. Ordered our usuals or skewers and burgers however both were luke warm and the burger was lacking taste! Really hope this isn't a sign of things to come here as it really is a favourite and hope it improves next time!

Its been a while since I have visited Garbutts on "Prinny Ave" so earlier today used the last afternoon of my hols to go for lunch accompanied by my wife.

Me, my husband and another couple visited here last night, as usual it was good, probably the best pub grub on Princes Ave. I had the Mexican Deli, was a large portion, but was just want I wanted, a little bit of everything. The onion rings wasn't too nice but everything else was spot on. If you want a cheap and cheerful mid week meal, this is the place. On Tuesdays from 8pm they have live music too.

Called in on Monday for lunch and place was surprisingly busy. Whilst there were a few tables awaiting food when we arrived, food was served remarkably efficiently. Trio of mini burgers was delicious- traditional beef , minted lamb and pork with chorizo. Garnished with salad and served with chunky chips. Staff polite and friendly. Good ambience to place even on a Monday lunchtime.

Been here before and the food was good but not outstanding. There were 11 in our party and getting there about 4pm ( because of younger children) the place was quiet.We were told food would be around 35 minutes but it was almost an hour before we were served.I had gammon which was well cooked and my wife had the classic burger which she said was a little dry.All in all a good meal with pleasant staff but the wait for food was too long

Went for lunch last Saturday. It was a bit quieter than I expected but that was possibly because of Hull sesh. We ordered a spicy meatball with mozzarella and a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich both in ciabatta and they were huge and lovely and fresh. Two large coffees and a bill less than £15 excellent value.

Great place to pop in on a Saturday for a quick lunch bite, nice food, service can take a while if busy but the staff are very apologetic if this is the case. Have returned a few times for the fish finger sandwiches!

I've eaten here lots of times in the past and always enjoyed but this is the first time I've been in a while and I was disappointed with the food. The steak pie was topped with a rock hard pastry lid - so hard I couldn't cut it so ended up leaving it, and the chunky chips I ordered came as skin on wedges - nothing like the lovely chunky chips Garbutts used to do. Veg also seemed over cooked, possibly microwaved. Not sure if it's changed hands and/or chefs but wasn't impressed at all. Wouldn't rush back now which is a shame as it was always a firm favourite.

Visited Garbutts on Sunday afternoon, weather was perfect . Love this place , food is always outstanding and never falters . I heard our sizzling chicken skewers as they opened the kitchen door . The presentation was awesome and the food delicious. And the price is very good . This place is always spotless and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I've just realised that this is now the sixth time that I've reviewed my favourite place on Prinny Ave - why are you still only thinking about going?The selection of beer is fabulous, the menu of food is brilliant and they've just changed their specials board to a Tapas list for the summer. What could be better than to sit outside watching the sun set over the church while nibbling at small dishes and sipping at wine? I'll tell you what could be better - one of their fabulous burgers and a pint of cold lager. Oh yes, that's definitely better...Totally, completely and thoroughly recommended for singles, couples, families and groups. We've done them all and Garbutt's has never disappointed.

After quite a bit of confusion with a male member of staff, we asked a female member of staff the same question re: a table for 8 diners and were seated in no time at all quite happily. The cocktails looked lovely, although I was Des for the night. The food was all brought out together and everyone said how delicious it was, shame about the cuffufle earlier in the night. x

Spent a lovely early evening at this very popular establishment, the food as usual was freshly cooked to a very high standard in very nice surroundings .Highly recommended
