I have no idea why the TA reviews of this lovely restaurant are so few and far apart! We have eaten there several times over the recent past - each meal has been well cooked and beautifully presented. A really talented Chef. Much of the hotel and both of the restaurants have been massively changed and improved over the past 2 years, at no little cost. The menus are relatively short but with sufficient choice for a very tasty Sunday lunch. Good choice of wines - by the glass too. We had pre-lunch drinks on the sunny terrace; our meal was served in the Gallery restaurant and we ended with coffee in the Library Bar. Go and enjoy!

We have dined here many times & always feel it’s a special place. The last time was on my birthday, just before Christmas, & it was just wonderful with the decorations up & festive menu. The food was excellent, beautifully presented & delicious. The little pre starters were very interesting & My husband said that his turkey was the most tender he’d had for a long time. My favourite dish was the blackberry soufflé. Stuart looked after us well & it was nice to see the restaurant so busy for a week day evening. I’m looking forward to going back in the new year.

Great setting with easy parking. Pre-dinner drinks in the bar / lounge area where our order was taken and we had some "nut treats" - we thought the shared pots were a little usual in a new COVID world. On this note the hand sanitiser station was prior to entering the building and all serving staff had plastic visors. The amuse bouche was very nice as was the sourdough bread with 2 types of butter. The menu is a little limited but we were all able to find something we liked. The food was generally very good - fine dining portions and presentation. The staff were friendly but needed prompting for a few things, although this distract from a lovely evening - after a while you do get used to their smart outfits being combined with welding masks :) I'm not sure that they do though. All other tables were couples and presumably residents so a nice atmosphere in the restaurant. We would return and happy to recommend.

We stayed at the Cavendish earlier in the year and had two good meals here. We stayed three nights this time and ate here twice - in between in the garden room which was good but lacking in atmosphere. First night, the whole thing was brilliant. Nearly two hours at a comfortable table with three very tasty courses plus Chef's treats and nice bread with flavoured butter. good, unobtrusive service. The other customers had generally made some effort to, at least be dressed semi-casual. We went straight to reception and booked in for the last night. Oh, dear, oh, dear this was a disaster. We were placed at a tiny table where there was no room for the full place setting to be spread out. The food was good but served, including by many of the same staff as before, at "hurry-up" pace. They must have been plating as they saw us take the last mouthful. From sitting down to biting the last mouthful of desert it was almost exactly an hour leaving us with half a bottle of expensive wine to drink because we could not keep up! The disappointment was compounded because there were a team of some sort of technicians dressed in their work clothes taking up the prime table and another chap making phone calls and reading a magazine as he hoovered up all this lovely food - all very Crest Hotels 1980. We are sure that the problem is a lack of an identifiable Maitre. Nobody seemed in charge. They really do need to decide what they are trying to do before they lose an obviously talented chef and their reputation as a high quality restaurant

The title says it all. This is definitely a fine dining experience. Atmosphere is subdued & respectful. Service was unassuming yet attentive. Food was simply delicious. It’s said we eat with our eyes and all the dishes were indeed a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds. There was even a bit of theatre with the smoked lamb served with smoke under a glass dome which was removed to produce a cloud of smoke with a warming smoked smell. If you like good food combined with good service in a pleasant surrounding then you won’t be disappointed.

We ate two nights here when staying at the hotel. Both evenings had the same menu -which if staying longer may become difficult to find something new. Both nights the food was very well presented, tasty and to be honest - the duck was great and could have done with some more on the plate. Service was very good, friendly and helpful.

Sehr gute Qualität der Produkte. Interessante Geschmackskombinationen. Weinliste ebenfalls überdurchschnittlich. Nicht günstig aber Preise durchaus angemessen. Service gut.

Not a lot of atmosphere but nothing to really complain about. Food good but not a lot of choice I felt. Service rather 'full on' and never felt like a private conversation was possible. Soon ushered off into the lounge for coffee and no chance of remaining in situ as staff rather pushy about getting 'set up' for breakfast. A shame that we were pushed to move as food very good and it spoilt the flow a bit. Definitely not cheap and portions somewhat small but it was good.

Had dinner at the Gallery and could not recommend it highly enough. The 3 course dinner was excellent - especially the "onion" starter! The service was fantastic and the manager was what you would expect in a fine dining restaurant - superb!

The food is of a good quality but the menu is too restrictive and I think slightly overpriced. The Garden Room in the same hotel (The Cavendish) offers a wider menu of which some items may be served in the Gallery Restaurant. They all come from the same kitchen. If staying longer than two or three nights the Gallery menu would pose a problem for choice. It is a little superiorin content.

We enjoyed our first evening in England with a splendid dinner after a long trip from London's Heathrow. Classic, elegant surroundings. Superb service. Nice wine list. I had the Filet of Beef which was very good. My wife had the Rump of Lamb with the Truffle Risotto. Combining truffle, risotto, and the flavor of beautifully prepared lamb made this dish an absolute knock out. Don't miss it! I would describe the service as classic European. For us Americans, this is the difference between dining and eating. We're used to sitting down, having the courses come one after another, and getting out. Here, there are long purposeful pauses between each course and even at the end. Try to be patient...relax. It's not slow service...it's dining! Prices are fairly high...but worth it.

Eat here on one of two nights while staying at the cavendish hotel. Had the burger and trimmings which was cooked as I requested. Lovely hot fresh chips and good coleslaw. Followed this with rice pudding with amaretto ice cream which was also perfect.

Beautifully decorated and comfortable. The food and service were excellent accompanied by a delicious glass of Merlot. it was a lovely birthday treat. This is my only gripe - I ordered a pre dinner kir royale. I've had quite a few kir royales over time. I couldn't see the cassis or taste it in this one. When I asked the waiter, he told me it was 'white' cassis. Tasted like a glass of plain champagne to me.

I have to say that I believe this is the best restaurant, because of the very dedicated and personable maître d'. He was very helpful and knowledgable. The food was heavenly...the surroundings spectacular. Surrounded by fine art, one can enjoy the beauty and comfort of fine food. We love it!

Looking at other reviews, yes, this is pricey and, no, there isn't heaps on every plate but, from drinks in a beautiful lounge to three exquisite courses, the food was stunning and we were pleasantly full when we left. I wasn't sure about halibut and ox cheek being on the same plate but it worked superbly. The service was friendly and professional and the hotel staff were very helpful in booking us a taxi to go only a short distance as my father in law had hurt his knee and couldn't walk far.

I have used this hotel both to stay at and drop in to eat at many times over the last 30 years and always regarded it as the top of my list of places to go. I have not been for several years and when I found out some dear friends were having a 5 day break jumped at the opportunity to eat with them. Because I was driving I could not try the extensive wine list which looked good. I was disappointed to hear that the menu for our friends had been set for the week and would not change, something you need to be aware of if you are thinking of staying a while. For me the menu was great and as to be expected however apart from a lamb dish all mains were either game or fish. My wife asked for something else and they offered a chicken dish, which was excellent, and interestingly chosen by all 3 other guests. I had pheasant well presented very tasty. Starters were all good but the risotto was too overpowering for the sea bream. The artichoke soup was excellent as was the cheese board at the end. Be warned, great to see no extra charge for cheese, happening too often in my opinion, but also great portions. Easily share 1 between 2. They had some very tasty local specialties but also stinking bishop which I was able to try for the first time. A bit like an over ripe Camembert.I don't know why I felt a little let down the welcome service and attention was perfect menu would suit most but not all I think perhaps it was the memories when the hotel was very much a private country house hotel. It has had a very extensive refurbishment of the highest order and perhaps it has lost a little of its old charm. Sorry you can't please everyone.Oh by the way gentlemen even if you don't want to use the loo you must pop in it is worth looking at and for those who haven't been for a while it is still its excellent same.So perhaps I should conclude with great to be back and I will return soon.

Seemed like someone wanted to impress with high-end innovation--and did not quite make it. Consistency a real issue--over three nights the same dish served three different ways. Some excellent food--some not so much. And a little of the creative energy would be well spent expanding the very limited menu

After many years working in the Peak District always wanted to return and eat at the renown Cavendish Hotel.Eric Marsh was and still is well known and his influence on Peak District hospitality has been recognised. We booked Sunday lunch in the Gallery - excellent value for money. We were made very welcome and comfortable in the lounge. Service was attentive and friendly. Tables were all full in the quite small restaurant and the conservatory restaurant was also busy (and less formal)We all enjoyed the variety of flavours on the plate for each course - well done Chef. The roast beef melted in the mouth. We all managed to find room for a dessert again flavoursome. We took coffee and petit fours in the lounge before heading home and promising to return.Well done to everyone at The Cavendish.

Beautiful restaurant at the gorgeous Cavendish hotel. We had begun to dismiss the peak park as a culinary desert with the exception of the excellent Fischers restaurant. After having walked out of our 2nd Peak District restaurant in a week we went to the Gallery on spec. We had to wait for a table but sat in their lovely drawing room next to an open fire and antique grandfather clock while we waited. The food was excellent. Classical French. Borderline Michelin Star. Good wine list very reasonably priced. Lovely views if you can get a table by one of the Georgian sash windows. Service was a little flaky with our waiter mixing up the main courses (Beef vs Lamb) and not realising his error despite being asked. Only when we checked with the delightful head waiter was the mistake confirmed and our plates swapped. Butter was also omitted from the table until we asked. However there was only a 5% service charge! If they can sort out the flaky front of house then I'm sure a Michelin star will be on its way.

We were a bit worried after reading some previous reviews but were very pleased we decided to dine at The Gallery. Service was friendly and attentive, we had a great table looking out towards Chatsworth Park and the food was sublime. The portions are smallish, but this is fine dining not country pub fare so if quantity rather than quality is your thing then look elsewhere. We had starters of a mushroom risotto and a pastrami salmon - great tastes and presentation. Mains were pork belly and beef - both cooked to perfection. We finished sharing the cheese plate and had eaten plenty. We also enjoyed a very good Sicilian wine which was very reasonably priced. All in all a memorable night out.

Wish we had read the reviews! Gallery restaurant / basically all day food @ extortionate prices! Starter edible, nothing more. My main course @ £12.25. Squid salad, which consisted of 5 slices thin courgette, a few bits of rocket and other greens and 6 small bits of squid plus dressing. I had to order a side of chips to not come away from our celebratory dinner starving. ( I am not a greedy person and not overweight !) My husband's posh fish and chips was no better than our local fish and chippy, and twice the price! The front desk staff and waiters were very nice. At the end of this disastrous meal, we asked for the bill. Half an hour later, having asked for it 3 times, the waiter told us we just needed to go to the front desk, the waiters did no t bring the bill to us!That we were not charged for my main course or my chips does not make up for a bad, overpriced meal with miniscule portions.I wish tripadvisor had minus ratings for the food and value!

Had dinner here the following night for my wife’s birthday.WOW!I had the beef which I order medium rare and that’s exactly what I had (see photo). The veges came out cooked perfectly and if anything slightly caramelised which I felt was a nice touch. Although, like one of the other posters mention, you are paying £16 which I felt was a touch steep (£12 would have been more appropriate)The dessert was awesome. Even the tables on either side of us commented and 1 ordered it and the other well let’s just say we got on very well and my wife and the wife of the other couple ended up sharing as the serving was quite large (see photo) and well the rest is history. If making a reservation ask for a table by the window if it is for 2 - 4 people.Best off dressing in neat casual or better.

We booked the restaurant after hearing good reports from family and Friends who had been before. We booked Sunday lunch for 6 of us.First impressions were good, a nice looking place well kept. The menu was presented and very quickly they gave themselves a lot to live To. At £16 for a main course of beef and £9 for a scallops starter I thought maybe They had their 2 AA Rosettes confused with 2 Michelin stars! The starters arrived, scallops and a goats cheese and beetroot dish. ScallopsLooked ok but a potent ammonia smell was present- I have only smelt this onSkate before and wondered how this was possible. Next the £££ beef was all well done, roast potatoes were pathetic attempts and veg was boring and under seasoned- pieces of courgette, carrot, broccoli and cauliflower- just boiled, wouldn't you expect some more adventurous examples at this price?Dessert had the usual icing sugar over everything? What made it worse was the bill came with serice charge!!You feel like saying you give me off scallops and over done beef and then give yourself a pat on the back and charge a tip!!Not impressed at this price.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!
