Gales of Llangollen in Denbighshire

We stayed here for a stag weekend and the staff were great, the atmosphere was great, and we were super impressed with the food, especially breakfast (veggie brioche - trust me). The hotel was a bit wonky but the beds were comfy, the biscuits were topped up, and the showers were hot. We'd definitely stay again. Thanks Gales!

Really nice place to stay in the centre of Llangollen. Food was excellent with a breakfast to die for. Nice and friendly staff. Wonderful evening atmosphere too.

Super place full of lovely charm and all staffed by an attentive crew. Our starters were fresh and original and the 8oz steaks were cooked to perfection. Highly recommended.

We stayed over for one night.I'm so glad it was only a night and not the two we had planned. The whole establishment needs a good deep clean lots of dust on the kettle mold on the bathroom tiles poor shower head. Very tired furnishings Clutter, laundry bags, boxes strewn everywhere.won't return or recommend.Not good value for money .Need to get therecact together.

We stayed regularly at Gales Wine Bar on business many years ago. We decided to revisit this week and can honestly say it doesn’t look like any improvements have been made and has definitely gone down hill. Our room was unbelievably bad: Faded pictures on the wall. TV remote didn’t work. No in room information. Cracked wash basin. Broken toilet roll holder. Rusty mirror. No WI Fi. Furniture in very poor condition. One of the drawers in the chest had broken handles and couldn’t be opened. The entrance to the accommodation had old empty wine boxes and generally looked uncared for. All in all a VERY disappointing visit. The member of staff we spoke to was very apologetic and was having to deal with a similar complaint from another guest. There is generally a feeling of a lack of care and NO attention to detail.

What a gem of a place right in the middle of the town, we were a party of 19 Harley Davidson owners and had pre booked an agreed menu in consultation with head Chef Gareth, we were seated in a reserved area undercover in the courtyard which worked perfectly for us. The food was served hot and perfectly cooked by really pleasant staff and all our dietary requirements were well catered for. The live music on the night was a great bonus and made for a great night. Would I recommend Gale's? Yes in a heartbeat. Other than the great food, good wine's and Beers and live music the greatest thing is the staff they were just great. Chef Gareth and team thanks for looking after us.

Lets itself down with bad organisation and management. Food very good when it arrived but there were many issues, here are a few: Booking confirmation text -wrong Waited a long time to order and then a long time for drinks No wine glasses or wine bucket yet a wine bar Ordered food then later told unavailable Had to ask for cutlery Wrong desert served and when asked what it was, it was described as an upside down cheesecake thingy had to ask for the other desert which was served much later Waitresses not clear what they were serving - staff out of their depth and need training Can laugh about it all today - Gordon would have had a field day! With the great food it is serving this should be a 5star wine bar every day of the week

Complete disinterest. We had booked for 7pm. The waitress walked past us twice saying nothing. Only one table was occupied. Tables were dirty and uncleared. We asked about our reservation. She shrugged showing complete disinterest and said the bar looked busy. We left. Given how few bistrós there are in town, this place is missing a trick. Possibly all their staff were at The Manic Street Preachers concert, but someone needs to get a grip.

We visited first about 15 years ago. Decided to return and were not disappointed. The food is brilliant, staff friendly and its a lovely place to sit. Good selection of wine. Its not on the high street so make sure you seek this put when visiting.

Stayed 1 night here this week , the buildings were very interesting and neatly presented to bequest the buildings age / history. Unfortunately the restaurant does not open on monday's so we were unable to eat there in the evening. the wine bottles looked a vast selection indeed! there was a small carpark in the courtyard for around 5-6 vehicles.

Called in without booking. Owner very knowledgable about wines, indeed they had literally hundreds of bottles to try and enjoy. Nice bistro-style food to go with the wines. Looks like pllenty of different "special events" every week to provide extra interest. We even called back next morning for an early breakfast, which was nicely cooked and well presented. No doubt we could have had another wine-tasting with our breakfast if we'd fancied it! :-).

Very centrally located near to bridge, shops & steam railway station. Fairly basic but comfortable at this price point. Friendly staff. Convenience of adjoining wine bar. Ancient building. Comfy beds. Bathroom could be better but again, ok at the price.

We had walked around Llangollen on Friday evening for a few drinks and came across this wine bar, we were greater by a man at the bar and told us to take a seat at a high table and will bring some menus over. The guy was great taking our order and recommending some wines. Atmosphere and decor very nice with great staff. We looked at the food menu and decided to book online for the Saturday. The guy realised we had ordered and thanked us and said we would be looked after by someone else on Saturday as he was off. We left thinking what a great place. Arrived on Saturday to total disorganised staff. The lady who I think was shift manager took us to our table and that was it,,,I had to go the bar to order drinks and the staff were had no idea what to do as manager was not incontrovertible and not managing anything,,waited to have a order taken from table but to no avail,,30 mind a member of staff said is everything OK. I just replied we have had no service and we are leaving. Terrible. Will we return? Everyone deserves a second chance. Even if its Fawlty Towers

Decided to book for dinner for the last night of our holiday. Arrived a little early for our booking and were placed at a table facing the end of the bar, sitting side by side. Ordered and received drinks, ordered food. An hour later the waitress realised we were not served yet and dashed back to the kitchen. Came back to check what we had ordered (and got one of the dishes wrong). 20 minutes later, still no food. As we were gathering our things to walk out the food arrived. Still the wrong dish, but went with it anyway. Asked manager to bring the bill, at which point he was informed of the problems. Took off the cost of the drinks and part of the food. Tried then to schmooze us with some talk about wine gadgets. Food was ok when it arrived, but our evening was spoiled and we'd planned to have dessert and more drinks. Others in the restaurant seemed to be getting ok service.

Lovely, quaint place, food was awesome, staff were really friendly, highly reccomend! We also stayed in the accommodation, the room was cosy, bed was comfy, lovely tea/coffee available in room to have when we woke, it was a highly popular place, everyone was super friendly, lovely and clean, quirky, amazing wine shop in the property, thankfully the weather was with us, the pubs were very unusual, like going back in time, we really loved our visit there, next time we'll definitely stay longer, such beautiful sights to see, so relaxing, can't recommend enough!

Fab night at Gales Llangollen, room lovely staff brilliant, menu OK, I had sea bass but far to many potatoes and sauce, my partner had Duck which was very nice asparagus abit tough as the cooked the whole the asparagus instead of snapping it in halve ,Apart from that we will be back , must of been at least 5 times up to now over the years . We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights and had breakfast every morning. The menu was unusual and every meal was delicious. We had great service from Hester and Robert and the chef Gareth made amazing food, especially the vegetarian brioche with mushrooms, cheese, egg , chutney and avacado- honestly the best restaurant breakfast I have ever eaten! My daughter loved the Fenchvtoastcwith bacon and maple syrup and also I enjoyed the scrambled eggs on toast- tasty, filling and hot food! Will definitely return when we next visit Llangollen!

We came to Gales for a couple of nights stay to paddle the Dee. We found the staff to be very polite, and good service. There happened to be a problem with our room booking and they sorted it out no problem, and in no time, and gave us a bottle of wine to go with our dinner we had later in the evening. I had the duck it was lush. They also gave us vouchers for staying with them overnight which we used towards a second bottle of wine and also desert the following night. The rooms were tidy, and clean. Definitely stay here again! Definitely recommend. Thanks for your service team!

We have enjoyed some superb wines, along with outstanding food, over a period of almost 30 years at Gales. We were looking forward to another delightful dining experience after a couple of years of not having much time to dine out. We found the menu lacked inspiration, as did the food when it arrived. We ordered a perfectly acceptable red. However, the calamari I had was a greasy flabby travesty made worse by a rather nasty mayonnaise. It spoiled the taste of my wine. I had a veggie burger, my partner a burger. Neither looked even remotely like the photos on here. The token effort of salad could hardly be found. Maybe we are getting old, but food like this is not to our taste at all. Just a waste ordering a nice bottle of wine to go with the meal. We have had some delicious burgers elsewhere so it isn't as if we hate burgers. Just the ones plonked in front of us at Gales. The waiter apologised. Had we not ordered a bottle of wine and been tired and hungry after a day's hiking, along with happy memories of Gale's, we would have walked out.

If ever there was a blueprint for creating a “what a cool place we want to return” establishment, they have the formula here. The staff are engaging, in a non pretentious, genuine style. They are warm and friendly. The service is exceptional and the food is to die for. As we were sitting drinking and I was just finishing my beer, a man came up to our table and said “ Do you guys fancy another drink?” He then got them and brought them to the table. The food was really good too. The salmon poke bowl was simply delicious. The overall experience was so good we popped back on our way home the next day and had a brunch - the egg in the hole BLT was fantastic. I could not recommend Gayles more. I look forward to visiting again soon.

My partner and me visited Llangollen for my first time at the weekend, we were booked to stay in the Wild Pheasant but decided to stay at Gales Wine bar and hotel on the Saturday after dining there on the Friday evening and ended up booking an extra nights stay on the Sunday too. From the moment we went into the wine bar Rob (the wonderful manager) and Lilly (faithful and lovely assistant) and Sam (wine connoisseur) looked after us, nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very welcome. The food was gorgeous and prepared by Harry (my fabourite, sausage and mash with a yorkshire pudding). Gareth the wonderful scouser and Head Chef, George, Coalan and Ollie, make a great team and are all lovely!! We met Pip the owner who was great and very friendly and Steve who made us laugh. A big thanks to Sam too who manages the fantastic on site wine bar which we frequented and purchased some beautiful wine all on his knowleadgeable recommmentations (nothing was too much trouble for this well oiled and lovely team). It made our weekend, we didn't want to leave and will definitely visit again, I couldn't recommend this place enough. It's a 10 out of ten for us. Thanks again everyone. The rooms were lovely and comfortable and it has a brilliant atmosphere. xxx

We’ve been going to Gales for over 25 years and we love it. This isn’t a trendy wine bar that serves up cheap plonk at expensive prices. The owners have always prided themselves on sourcing fantastic wines from around the globe at all price points. The food is all prepared and cooked on site and the shop next door sells an extensive range of wines and spirits you won’t find in other places. The accommodation is beautifully presented and there are lots of different and entertaining nights throughout the week. Bars and restaurants come and go in Llangollen, but Gales remains the best.

Not the longest of menus but still a great choice enhanced by the specials board. The food was excellent and the service good with attentive staff. The atmosphere was relaxed. Great value for money.

Brought my wife here for valentines day staff were so friendly and couldnt do enough for us food was out of this world and very reasonably priced will definetly be coming back keep it up guys i think ive found food heaven

First time of eating in Gales, very good attentive service and delicious homemade burger, very reasonably priced too.

Second visit & even better than first. Different room than previous stay and, although smaller, still plenty of space & appropriate fixtures & fittings. Comfortable & nice street aspect. Fabulous ambiance, food & service in the restaurant.

Stayed while on business nearby, the room was good but lacks a desk if you want to work. That said, there is a room downstairs where you can work. I stayed on room 11, on the top floor up the very steep stairs.The food however, is exceptional! Breakfast doesn’t serve until 08:00 , so can’t comment on that but dinner is just sooooo good.Highly recommended

Excellent little Bistro, very friendly guy served us, was quite busy, good prices, nice menu, great food and some very nice house wine, would have loved to have gone back for an evening meal but sadly didnt have the time, but when we walked past on the friday and saturday evenings it was packed out.

Beautifully simple dishes well executed. The poached beef was 10/10. And as you can imagine, the wine list is the best in the region.

My wife and I called in for a glass of wine. The atmosphere was informal, friendly and very welcoming. There were many wines on sale, and we picked a bottle of pilot to sample. We purchased some to take home.

As a local to Llangollen I can guarantee that Gales surpasses all other places in and around Llangollen for the quality of food, the extensive and varied wine list and the excellent service. The wine bar is unassuming, relaxed and exactly the kind of welcoming unpretentious atmosphere I look for. Highly recommend the steak!

We chose Gales for our Sunday lunch while visiting Llangollen because it was convenient to St. Collen's church. We would go back again because the meal we enjoyed was absolutely marvelous.

Just a good place to dine, drink and relax. One of the best steaks I have ever had and the white wine sauce with the chicken was wonderful. Ordering the starters as a "Tapas" was inspired.

Huge selection of wines and fine cuisine. Great ambiance nice people. What else? We’ll be back for sure

Beautiful food and fantastic, friendly service. We're not from the area so just went by the reviews, they certainly weren't wrong, so glad we went! We were celebrating our anniversary so wanted something a bit special and Gales didn't disappoint. Everything was so nice, such a great place! We especially enjoyed the sharing starters where you can pick various meats and cheeses. Our meals; the special of the day lamb and ox cheek linguine were gorgeous! If we're back in the area again we'll be sure to visit.

Stopped by at gales to share a cheeseboard and a couple of drinks. Not cheap, but the chessboard had a good selection of interesting and characterful English and Welsh cheeses and plenty of crackers. No beer on draught, but good quality local bottled ales. A very pleasant place to sit and eat.

Booked a table here midweek after a day out in Llangollen. Lovely traditional wine bar feel, friendly attentive service. Had a beautiful local English IPA ale, and a Wild Boar Linguine from the specials menu - rich, meaty and plentiful! The experience was fantastic from start to finish; will definitely return when in the area and would recommend.

Managed to get a table in this lovely place. We had a platter of starters, hot bread, olives cold meats oils for dipping lovely. Rack of ribs were huge, special of he day Cod Loin was very tasty, there was a very good wine list.

Ein Restaurant mit guter Weinauswahl - es liegt nahe, dort Coq au Vin zu essen. Das Ergebnis hatte mit traditioneller französischer Küche wenig zu tun, aber es war eine gekonnte, selbstbewusste Interpretation eines Klassikers, mit hochwertigen Zutaten und sorgfältiger Zubereitung. Nur der Speck dominierte geschmacklich zu sehr.

Back to Gales for our annual visit to Llangollen. Excellent food and service as always - the ribs were just spectacular. See you next year, if not before.

The atmosphere is great, the service is great and the food is great. I loved the menu - I could have ordered everything! The way they present their food is fantastic and it's very reasonably priced. Will definitely visit Llangollen again just to go to Gales for supper!

We stayed here for 2 nights, the room.we were put up in was amazing, it was a large room (number 12). With a huge bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.

We stayed here for 1 night and although we didn’t eat and just used our room as a base were more than happy for the price we paid. Room was clean and bed comfy so made for a good nights sleep even though it was a little noisy as local bars kicked out! My only issue was the shower that was more like a trickle of water.

A group of us booked a room here to stay for the weekend while we hired a couple of canal boats out. Lovely place to stay. Rooms are clean and comfy. Nice little touch with the drink even though a couple of us did debate if it was wine, ribena or port. Packed car park but this Llangollen. Be prepared to block each other in but we took up 4 cars so worked together.

I so enjoyed this relaxed, interesting and cosy restaurant. We went for lunch and the food was fabulous. I ordered the fried polenta with pesto and curried courgettes, oh my goodness it was delicious and months afterwards I'm still hankering for it! As a vegetarian is it such a nice change to find something unusual and interesting on a menu which is not mushrooms or aubergine and although the menu was small, everything was well cooked and tasty. As I didn't want to leave, my husband and I shared the cheese board afterwards which was a lovely range of cheeses and no fussy extras with it - just good quality cheeses and crackers, fab. The wine menu was extensive and, like an interesting book I couldn't put it down! There was a description of each wine and how they go with what foods, stories about them which made me want to try them all. Unfortunately I could only try one but that was delicious too. The service was friendly and straightforward and I loved how whenever a dog came in, they were treated with the same hospitality! Can't wait to go back.

We have enjoyed lunch here on two successive Tuesdays - freshly prepared and tasty dishes in a comfortable and traditional pub-feel setting. This is the place to come if you want to enjoy decent food whilst listening in to local gossip!

After a nice walk with my wife called in for a Sunday lunch.

They do a 48 hour marinated ribs here, and we'd drooled all day waiting to order this. Unfortunately, they'd just served their last ones. So, we decided to create our own anti-pasta selection from the 5 cheeses, 5 meats, and 5 olive / hummous selections they have. We added a delicious garlic bread and a glass of fruity white to make a meal more than good enough to remove our loss of the ribs.

Gales of Llangollen is a family business with a Hotel, Wine Bar, and Restaurant. The food is really good and they also have a decent wine shop, as an independent wine merchant they put emphasis on the quality of the products and they have a team of passionate, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable staff. Very small wine bar although menu interesting I would say over priced for the size of meals , and dissatisfaction with service as meals arrived different times although the staff were very apologetic and were very entertaining due to the fact it was festive season
