Gabbys Chippy in East Riding of Yorkshire

Small Cod and chips plus curry sauce and jumbo sausage and chips. And everything was cooked to order. Perfect in every way. 👍🏻

Opted for takeaway fish n chips in our hotel room so we needed to find a place that cooks in vegetable oil so that my vegetarian partner can eat the chips from there. Chose Gabby's Chippy based on this. I rang in my order and then we drove there to collect it. I had a large haddock and chips with mushy peas and my partner opted for the "Hullish Patty" with chips and beans. We both thought the Hullish Patty was absolutely disgusting but we ordered it and it was worth a try for something new. The fish was absolutely gorgeous and the chips were really lovely and everything was still piping hot by the time we got back to the hotel. The place itself is in a very narrow street with very little parking and double yellow lines everywhere so if you go it pays to go as a couple so one can go in and one can stay in the car. I think they also deliver so you could remove that problem. Anyway. It was really nice. Thanks very much for absolutely brilliant fish n chips in Bridlington.

Ignore Carl T's review. He seems to like trashing businesses for the hell of it. For example, he called Papa's as being 'The Worst Fish & Chips Ever' and 'I'll never eat there again' in December 2022. But then he said the same thing when he ate there again in May 2023, even though he said he'd never eat there again. Anyway to my review: I have lived here 3½ years and tried a lot of chippies in Brid in the first few months, before a friend recommended Gabby's. I've been using Gabby's ever since. They are the only chippy I've experienced with consistent quality every time. A chippy is only as good as the fryer. Many other chippies I've tried are good one day, but then rubbish on other visits, and that's because they have different staff on the fryer. Gabby's is a true family run business with Dad on the Fryer, Mum and daughters serving and taking the orders. Every visit the fish and chips is fried by Dad. Every visit the quality is consistently the same, and in my opinion the best I've tried up here and down south over 6 decades. The service is friendly and efficient. The portions are very generous and the prices are probably the best in town. Love Gabby's fish n chips and will continue using them as long as I'm around. And no, I'm no relation and not affiliated; just a very satisfied customer.

Chips was a taste like they was reheat , fish in batter was dry and the batter and also the chips was warm and the taste was disgusting , it taste like it was all cooked in old oil , by far the worst fish and chips I have every had and I live in Bridlington , near be going back , waste of money

Everything served hot. Large fish was massive.My wife calls me a greedy pig but I couldnt finish it. I feasted on the leftovers 2 days later. 2 chatty girls serving. Overall very good.

Great fish and chips - firm fish, crispy batter and chips and generous portions - plus they gave us a top tip for an excellent seaside spot to eat them! Highly recommend a visit.

Visited yesterday on our visit to Brid. Forget the rest this is the best. Very good quality and great portions. Very busy but served quickly.

I love this place. I had a week in Bridlington in April last year and visited Gabbys a couple of times. This year I changed my accommodation from near the seafront to the Old Town in part to be within walking distance of Gabbys! I was in Brid for a week and came here three times. Very friendly, appreciated by locals and the fish and chips are always excellent in terms of size, quality and value for money. I wish it were my local chippy!

We’re visiting Bridlington and, after reading the reviews, we tried Gabbys. Both the fish and the chips were excellent. I had the small hadock and chips and my husband the medium. The portions were very generous. Would definitely recommend.

Had fish and chips from Gabby's for first time, had been meaning to but not well today didn't want to cook. OMG amazing, she even advised me about portion size of chips and she was not wrong🤣🤣Freezer it is, ordered large chips for hubby and medium for me, but medium would have done us both. Defo value for money and fish gorgeous, I had small 7oz, it was more than enough for me. Eyes bigger than our bellies. Defo recommend. And delivered to our door for small charge. Delivery very girl polite. Very happy all round😁👍

Living in Brid we are overrun with Fish and Chip shops due to being by the seaside but this one is my favorite. I can only describe the place as a proper chippy. Portion size is very big and whilst being big this does not impact on the quality. So in short you get huge portions of quality chippy at a great price. What more do you want. Also need to say how friendly and attentive the staff are. During my last visit my daughter was unsure about which curry sauce to have with her food and the owners daughter and my daughter had a little tasting session of the four different curry sauces whilst we waited for our food to cooked. This showed a different level of niceness and put a smile on my face. We will continue to use this chippy as it really is in my opinion the best in the town.

This was our third visit since discovering this hidden gem. The quality of food is always top class. Infact this visit the chips were some of the best I’d ever had. Trust me. Service was excellent even though the were very busy with phone orders. Recommend 200%

Absolutely fantastic chippy! Brilliant vegan/ veggie options which makes a great change....even vegan scraps yum! The portions are huge, very fresh, gorgeous batter on the fish option. I'd highly recommend you order pre opening so as not to dissapoint during busy times. I'll defo be coming again 10 /10

Lovely meal delivered on time & hot. Gorgeous haddock and you can see our thoughts on the pea fritter - delicious. Lots of choice on the menu with different things such as messy chips in lots of flavours. Highly recommended and good value for money.

came here as we only like fish and chips cooked in oil rather than dripping. So glad we did! We got fish and chips 6 times (2 adults and 4 children) and was less than £30! I even checked that they'd charged us right! The chips are crinkle cut (we asked about them and were assured that they have a crinkle cut chipper and cut them themselves...not frozen chips!)The fish was cooked to perfection and we ate every bit! Absolutely the best fish and chips we have ever eaten! I can't believe than any of the low rated reviewers even ate here as there was absolutely nothing I could find fault with! As a family we’re a mixture of veggie, Vegan and omni. So Gabbys was the best option in Brid. We had veggie burgers, battered sausage, falafel balls & chips (All from the vegan menu) and a few portions of fish and chips.All the vegan stuff was awesome and the omni’s amongst us couldn’t stop commenting on the quality of the fish. Definitely going back next time we’re in the area.

i have been to many chippys in my life, i can honestly say this is in my top 5, i just got chips i will say a big portion but they did cost £2 quid, the bad thing was the taste the oil was awful not what chips should taste of, also they were very and i mean very gritty like they had not washed the potatoes right, was like eating sand, i had to bin them, and i love chips so binning chips for me says how bad they were. never eat from here again, vailps, i went coz of the good review haha that cost me time and 2 quit. how they enjoyed them i never know.

Amazing find for any Vegetarian or Vegan, menu with a wide choice but they are all freshly cooked so take 20mins. We opted to just have chips as all very hungry and in a hurry, not had any food all day. One of our party does eat fish. which he also enjoyed. I don't. Loved the selection of salts. also vegan Mayo. Hope to go back on next visit to Yorkshire. No seating or Loos or Disabled access.Situated in the old town very charming part of Bridlington.... a gem

Came here for because the 149 on Marton Road was busy. What a mistake, soggy smelly chips cooked in dirty oil, pre frozen fish absolute waste of money. Even the seagulls refused them, I would be ashamed to serve this as food.

There are plenty of good Fish and Chip shops around the area so this shop needs to get its act together. We live locally so decided to patronise Gabys. I ordered 2 Haddock and one lot of chips. The batter was the darkest brown I have seen without it being burned. The chips were crinkle cut, soggy and stuck together which to me said frozen. The fish was yellow looking so not as fresh as could be and on smelling and eating the batter I doubt very much if cooking oil is fresh either.

So hard to find a vegetarian fish and chip shop in Bridlington despite there being so many places serving fish and chips. Couldn’t be more helpful and more importantly the food was excellent. Won’t go anywhere else now. Would highly recommend

Had food here only a handful of times, and each time was a delight.

Got fish and chips for myself my wife and my in laws. I went close to closing and was offered other items for free so value was extended. Great food great service.

We found this place on Happy Cow. We rang ahead with our order as instructed and collected within half an hour. Battered sausage, huge pea fritters (mushed with mint sauce), great chips, curry sauce, and even scraps! So much for your money too.

I read with delight about this fish shop selling haggis, so made a special trip there today. Nice place, in the atmospheric High Street, but when I asked about haggis I was told that the shop has become vegan and no longer sells haggis or black pudding. But it does sell fish. I think my vegan friends would be surprised to hear that fish is on a vegan menu. Plenty of places sell fish and chips but looks like I'll have to travel beyond York to get haggis. Such a disappointment

Called in today and had fish and a few chips , mushy peas and a hot cup of tea. The fish were very large and delicious. The batter thin and crispy which to em is great. The tea hot and a good cuppa. Had a great dinner. Will call again when in the area. Basically a fish and chip shop takeaway with a small amount of seating which we used.

We visited Gabby's in January for lunch. Really friendly staff happy to chat while we waited for our order. Very good value and huge Yorkshire portions. Really enjoyed them although too much to finish especially as we tried some of the home made onion rings which were fab!

So sorry to see this once fantastic chip shop offering great value for your money and lovely personal service slip down hill fast. I’m not going to go on about the portion sizes getting smaller or price rises because these are all inevitability’s. but the service is shockingly bad there now. The waiting time for your food is beyond normal now for a chip supper and the young staff on front need serious training. So sorry to see the decline because this chip shop was in my opinion the best in Bridlington before.

Ordered a chip butty, and a burger with chips. Waited over 15 minutes for the burger. The young girl packed two parcels into a bag and allowed me to leave the shop without me realising she hadn't given me the burger. Assuming that I ordered two meals with two wrapped parcels, I walked to my car to find the burger missing. upon returning to the shop the carrier split and chips went all over the floor. I asked the assistant why my burger was not enclosed all I got was mumbling and a grin full of sarcasm. I said I'm glad she thought it was so funny, she said she packed my chips whilst the burger was cooking, cannot see the point of this especially as she couldn't be bothered to ask if I wanted salt vinegar on them as she'd already wrapped them. The assistant did nothing to rectify the situation but instead though it amusing all my chips were outside all over the pavement. She needs to grow up, stop mumbling when speaking and stop her attitude and not use her mobile phone in the corner without walking her hands afterwards. Eight pounds totally wasted. Your staffs communication skills are seriously lacking

Because there was a vegan in our party, we phoned our order through. Even though we asked for it to be ready for a certain time, we still had to wait when we got there. We got back home to find part of our order (part of kid's meal deal) missing too. However, the chips were nice (vegan food is fried separately to everything else), batter was delicious and the Hullshire patties were seriously yummy. The fish was tasty (I'm told) and the portions extremely generous—I don't think we expected 'battered black pudding' to mean A WHOLE pudding! Good value for money too, considering what we paid to feed five adults and two kids. I suppose some might say it's only because this is about the only chippy a vegan can eat at in this area that I haven't found fault, but I honestly felt it was worth the wait and would be pleased to return—for a smaller portion though; I'm stuffed!

Llamé para pescado y patatas fritas en 27 de julio, mi pedido de pescado y patatas fritas, dos grandes y mi hija que estaba conmigo, pedimos una hamburguesa y patatas fritas salchichas. Conseguimos volver a donde estábamos y tenía ganas de algunos tatsty pescado y patatas fritas, pero el pescado sabía horrible. El servicio estaba bien, con una bonita porciones grandes. No vamos a volver.

I visited gabbys chippy today and my god crinkle chips amazing, the batter on the fish was nice and crispy. The service was speedy and friendly but best of all the price, talk about value for money!!!

It is definitely quantity over quality here! Giant portions but awful food. Everything was super greasy and seemed like it had been sat in the frier for an age. Sausage was okay, but as for everything else... wouldn't go again!

fish was like rubber and can not be fresh, it had no taste except for grease , chips cold and mushy, the batter was not very nice with a unknown taste(maybe last weeks oil?)

Bought fish and chips here today they ended up in the bin so greasy the fish was almost all batter which was almost burnt absolutely a waste of money the shop was run by three young people one of whom was doing the frying but seemed to spend most of the time talking instead f watching what he was doing

They have recently started using rapeseed oil and the food is even better than ever. Always been my favourite chippy but this change has improved it even more. The portion sizes are excellent. The fish is always cooked to order and never sits around. They are always friendly, it is always clean. The food quality is outstanding and I would recommend it 100%. They have also started doing vegetarian options which is lovely to see.

Go to 149 instead No comparison .Tried here for a change won't go back too greasy sorry .Irish curry was OK tho

When to Bridlington for the day, and decided to visit Gabbys for a fish and chip lunch as they came highly recommend. Had fish and chips twice, the portions were enormous, really good value. The staff were charming. Will definitely visit Gabbys next time we are in Bridlington.

Came to this Chippy on recommendation that this was a fab Chippy . The portion size was huge but the food was not great ... fish was overcooked ( was cooked from fresh as we waited ) the chips were soggy . Not nice to look at either . Not cheap but don't mind paying if food is good and this wasn't sadly . Parking ok outside such a shame this didn't live up to its reputation I wouldn't go back

The girl who served me was fantastic and offered me scraps on my fish and chips something I hadn't has offered in ages.But the fish and chips while plentiful where awful . They were soggy but the taste of fat was so over powering I had to brush my teeth to get rid of the taste. The picture shows what we threw away so you can imagine how little was eaten.

Tried Gabby's a few days ago and was very unhappy. The food didn't taste fresh, seemed as if it had been cooked a lot earlier in the day and left out. The fish was cold and the chips were awful- some were burnt and some undercooked. We threw it all away. We'll stick to our usual chippy in future.

We thought we would try gabby's as we saw the reviews, unfortunately they were awful, the chips were cold, and tasted as though they were re-fried, the fish was burnt, and very dry, not a place we will try again.

Outstanding fish and chips. Delicious, moist fish with just the right amount of batter and an immense portion of chips, we didn't eat half of . Lovely friendly family run business.We asked directions as we couldn't remember how to get to Dane's Dyke and the man cooking asked his daughter to ring her mum to give us directions - how's that for customer service, outstanding!

Was doing a tourist trail of the old town when we walked past this chippy got a whiff of chips ,(diet gone) popped in got a tray of chips and Yorkshire caviar (or MUSHY PEAS to the strangers) server added scraps ,we sat on a bench and scoffed them in no time. Can honestly say have never tasted better chips in my life (it was a cold cold day).Have read the reviews and when we return to Bridlington in summer will be back.

I have had a few fish & chips in England. They were too oily and lack of flavour. But Gabbys chippy is just right for me. The portion size is huge. Chips there are nice and crispy and fluffy inside. They have recently changed the frying oil to rapeseed oil, which is a good thing. It is alot healthier than frying in fat. My boyfriend is vegetarian and he can finally order something off their menu without worrying about animal fat. The taste of fish is still nice as usual. Thumbs up!

I have recently moved to Bridlington and Gabby is our closest Fish and Chip shop. I ordered 2 regular fish and chips. A small fish and chips and a sausage and chips to feed my wife and I and 2 children. What I received would have fed 8 of us, probably more. Interestingly they also fry in rapeseed oil. So it's great for vegetarians. I believe they also offer a gluten free batter. I personally prefer my chips cooked in dripping. Many of the Midlands chip shops where we lived for a while, cook in vegetable oil. I grew up with traditional Yorkshire chips so It's a personal preference and will probably start a long north v south debate. It is however probably considerably better for you than all that saturated fat, and unlike the midlands chip shops Gabbys does really nice fish with proper crispy batter. I couldn't fault the food and next time will probably order 2 portions of fish and chips to feed 4 of us. This also makes Gabbys fantastically good value for money.

We stay in Scarborough a couple of times each year and always make a special journey to this lovely fish n chips shop. Perfectly fried chips and a great menu. We love the curry here too and even bought a box of the Irish Curry to take home for my son a couple of years ago.Keep up the good work.

Excellent for quality quantity and service never be beaten and real value for money portions not for the faint hearted you have been warned . This is the nearest fish you will get to freshly caught out the sea it is caught filleted skinned and frozen at sea locking all that goodness and flavour in and then cooked in a lovely batter not like some where it's too thick and stodgy inside . 5*****'s from me across the board .

Looking at some of the reviews on here it's almost laughable. This is a chip shop not a restaurant. They offer Fantastic value for money not foie gras. There is a lot of thought put into what is offered. The menu often being tweaked and added too. Also I believe the chips will now be veggie friendly cooked in rapeseed oil. If you want good fish and chips this is the place to visit.

Great fish and chips in the heart of old town. Freshly Made to order and of excellent quality with very generous portion sizes makes this a very popular place. Very friendly staff and a good selection of foods on the menu.

First of all, none of the reviews can prepare you for how much food you actually get. A small haddock with chips and a side is at least twice as much as you get elsewhere, and at only £4.50, it's much cheaper too. Scraps are offered, as are "extra fish bits" making it a HUGE portion. Chips are cooked in beef fat (veggie's call ahead) which was actually a good sign for me as I was looking forward to some proper old-skool fish and chips. However, they didn't really impress. The fish was nice, as was the batter, but there really wasn't much taste to the chips and the peas tasted of nothing. I really wanted to like this place but it just turned out to be 'ok'. The locals love it, however, so you really should try it for yourself. I actually think the huge size put us off a bit.The next day I had same meal from sea front and it was much nicer.

It's a shame that this chippy doesn't put more into the quality of the food which it serves rather than the quantity... one medium sized portion of chips was suitable for 3 adults!... the chips also tasted like they had been fried, cooled and fried again which also made them not so tasty. A great selection of food for a local chippy, but a little more TLC with the quality would be appreciated.

Everytime we visit Gabbys it never fails to disappoint our family. We stay each year summertime at Filey in the caravan, we never use other chippys & as loyal as ever we even drive out of our way & all the way back just for Gabbys! The staff are always polite & helpful and to point the owner talks to you as if he's known you years & all the best for the new baby sir ;) . . Food is always perfect & Gabbys special excellent value for money. Love my haggis fritters please don't ever stop doing these! Bring back the homemade fishcakes for my husband pls!

went to this chippy after reading reviews on TA great choice first time i went got fish and chips each for me and the wife big mistake far too much for us went the week after got one large fish to share and one portion of chips still far too many chips had some with the fish then a chip buttie for my supper and still loads left to warm up the next day to go with our dinner this chippy is now our friday treat great value for money

Myself and my partner enjoyed fish and chips from Gabby's. Fish was freshly cooked, portions huge and you get free batter bits and fish bits. My partner had the large fish and ended up having most of the chips later in the evening (also enough for my son), I had to share my fish with a very happy dog as I couldn't eat it all . We also had the Irish curry sauce which was lovely. Highly recommended x

We had fish, chips and peas from here yesterday and they were really delicious! A lovely piece of fish that was flaky and cooked to perfection delicious chips too. The peas were tasty too, not runny or synthetically coloured. One to remember if you should find yourself in Bridlington and you fancy a some traditional fish and chips.

Staff always friendly. Sometimes helps to place a telephone order in advance to avoid having to wait. Quality of fish is excellent and great value with loads of other choices also being provided. Give this plaice a fry (I mean try) when you're in Bridlington's lovely Old Town.

Drove into Bridlington from Barmston Beach caravan park having read great reviews about Gabby's - we were not disappointed! We have honestly never experienced a chippy like this - and we've had a few. The haddock is excellent - plump and moist, with not a bone in sight. Even a medium portion of chips is massive, and to my utter delight we were offered 'scraps' - lovely, crunchy bits of batter sprinkled over the top (never had this in Scotland). Younger staff often get a bad press, but the young staff on duty (both times, as we came back for more!) were chatty and friendly, even offering advice on places to visit during our holiday. Prices are excellent for the size of meal - top marks!! We're probably holidaying in Barmston next year, so will DEFINITELY return. Keep up the good work everyone!
