We visited this restaurant on a day out to Porthcawl to meet up with friends . Walking in was like entering a time zone of the 1960s . We didn’t have to wait long before being served, the staff were friendly, the coffee was good and when we saw the piping hot plate of food, we decided to have lunch . There is a special each day the choice was beef or turkey dinner or com beef pie. My beef dinner arrived piping hot with Yorkshire pud loads of good veg and great roast potatoes . A word of caution – unless you have an awesome appetite for the small meal, the small meal is really a big meal, so I don’t know what the large is like . I have no complaints about this restaurant the meal was value for money and I’ll definitely go there again . Thank you to the staff and Owners for the great experience.

Decided to try this traditional cafe. Wish I had never entered. Went with a family member. Spent £16 on two ham egg and chips and two teas. Deco is as old as I am. Shabby. Young man didn't really care about his customers as he had his headphone in one ear. £6.50 for ham egg and chips. Basically my 15 year old could cook better chips then the cook in this place. Photo available with this review. Where's the bucket after I left. Felt sick an hour so after leaving. Plenty of ham and a good egg though chips were mushy skinny and just awful. Never go back to even try anything else on the menu....even my family member regretted her meal as well....you could put up with old decor if the food was tidy but no. No more said. Avoid avoid avoid

Called in yesterday with a disabled lady I work for to get some lunch Was busy as usual Sat at a table that had 2 empty glasses on it Seconds later was approached by the owner I think his name is Boris. He asked did we want any thing else. I said that we hadn't ordered and were waiting to be served He said in a loud aggressive manner that we weren't supposed to sit at a table that hadn't been cleaned. I said I didn't realise that. He then shouted there's a sign up at the counter stating that. I replied I was looking for a seat and not a sign and that his customer service manner was abysmal. If I had been on my own I would have left , but the lady I was with has mobility issues and cannot walk far. So I remained there. Two ladies who were sitting on a nearby table approached me and said that he was rude and abrupt in his manner towards them. What on earth is the matter with the man we are spending good money there. Must say that the girls who served us were lovely. I just pity them working for someone like him. The food was good nothing exceptional. Other places do it with a smile and welcome. Certainly wont be going back there.

Well reading the reviews im beginning to wonder if its the same place we visited.Had to queue which wasnt really a problem as we required a table for four.Frankly it was like being in a timewarp. It was so dated and cramped. The waitress was friendly enough took our orders we all decided on a roast lunch. The plates were small which made you look as though the meal was huge , it was enough to be fair .It was a basic mediocre roast pork lunch.Decided on desserts 2 blackcurrant tarts and custard and 2sundaes.The tart was unavailable so had what we were told was apple and blackberry but was aplle .A portion in a small dish with hot custard .had i been blindfolded id not know what it was other than hot ! Tastless tart no sugar and bland custard. The meal was with a drink 12 pounds which is very reasonable however id have preferred to pay 20 pounds and have enjoyed it.It was very similar to hospital meals no salt or sugar edible but not enjoyable. However it obviously is popular but i suspect with people who only eat basic plain fare. But if its not broke why fix it? It appears to have been similar if not exact since the day it opened.

A Porthcawl institution, and its food is good and the staff are wonderful and clearly love their jobs. But its trading on its past. This place could be such a draw..it has the same sort of legacy as the Kardomah in Swansea, and should be protected/listed in the same way, but its owners seemingly do not wish to invest, which is such a pity - it could be so much more. As other reviewers have mentioned, a complete weeks close down for a deep clean and bit of TLC would work wonders. Please, please don't let this gem just fade away, or worse be shut down due to poor hygiene and the site be 'redeveloped' for flats.

On first glance this place is a preserved time capsule from the 60s but when you sit down and really take in everything you can see the building is very run down and hasn't seen any investment in a very long time. The place was busy with people waiting to get in. I ordered the roast been dinner. I t was disgusting. The 'cabbage' was a dollop of soggy mush, the frozen runner beans had been cooked beyond death, the gravy was obviously instant stuff which didn't taste nice at all and the Yorkshire pudding was a soggy blob. The one boiled potato and frozen peas were ok - not wonderful, but ok as was the wafer thin beef.I told the person who cleared the table it was by far the worse cooked dinner I had ever been served - he must have known something was wrong as he took back far more than was eaten. When I went to pay I again complained and the woman who was taking the money she almost became aggressive and said they had to be doing something right as there were people waiting to come in. I was also told that I was the only person to have EVER complained - I cannot believe that...

Sidolis is better, but this is ok for a quick hamburger, chips, and tea. It's at the top end of John St, and there is little to do nearby, as most people go down John Street, nearer "The porthcawl beach", which is not the beach to go to unless you love playing in unsafe rocks, and treacherous high water surf.

You can see from my previous review of this restaurant that I was once quite the fan but after my last experience I won't be visiting this place ever again. Arrived at 14:30 on a Saturday afternoon and was met at the door by one of the rudest individuals I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. We were basically told to sling our hook because the individual wanted to watch the rugby. The diner was well populated at that moment and some customers were just being served. When we asked if the gentleman was joking he turned his back on us and started chatting to people eating. What a way to run a business and what an absolute prat that seems to run this dive.Glad to say that Wales lost the rugby and he has lost a valued customer!AVOID!

Although restaurant was only half full we had to wait too long for a menu to look at (which finally appeared when I got up and requested one and another customer had completed ordering. It would appear the owners are playing to the masses as cheaply and easily as possible. This used to be a friendly, clean and pleasant place to go for a snack or lunch, but that was not my impression. It felt just like a tired transport cafe.I think this once popular establishment is on it's last legs. Shape up Fulgoni's there's no excuses for such a bad impression.Kaye & Peter

Absolutely amazing, food was beautiful. The lady that served us , Karen behind the bar us was so lovely and helpful, my elderly mother has Alzheimer’s, and Karen , helped in every way and made the whole experience perfect. I would highly recommend the Royal Oak to all my friends and family. Thank you so much 😊

Went there on a Saturday to celebrate my mums birthday. I had prebooked which I recommend for bigger parties. The food was fabulous, all 7 of us enjoyed our meals. As I’ve been before and know the portion sizes are big we skipped starters and only a few managed dessert! The staff are good, different to the staff I usually see on my mid week visits. They are brilliant and the ones today were good too.

Popped in for lunch and enjoyed beautifully cooked hake and chips with all the trimmings and a really tasty build your own pizza. Thanks to all the team and especially Sian for going the extra mile to make sure that our dining experience was perfect.

Have visited this establishment a number of times. Now rebranded as 1832 Came for Sunday lunch on 07/07/24. When we booked we didn’t realise this date coincided with a 10K event. Travelling from Penarth and finding parking difficult meant we were a little late for our booking. Nevertheless we were greeted with a good welcome and very good service. The roast was well presented and tasty. It was of a portion size which enabled us to have a tempting desert. Well done team 1832 on a very busy day for you.
