Disappointing service and being charged for items added to bill. Too crowded and poor management of tables means did not have time to check the charges. Maybe disappointed as have had great experiences during previous visits

Looks like Fuji Hiro has been taken over again. Not impressed that a 10% service fee added to the bill and not sure why they have started. Tipping in Japan is frowned upon. The toilet floors and steep steps down to them feel like they have been washed in oil, really slippery and gods knows what’s on the bannister as it’s really sticky, needs a good clean. Been coming here since it opened in 1997 and Fuji Hiro was my favourite place to eat but not anymore. Ordered Yasi Yaki Soba (vegetarian) and was brought Yaki Soba (chicken and prawn). Told the waitress 3 times that I wanted Yasi Yaki Soba so not sure how she got it wrong but apparently it’s my pronunciation of Yasi. Very disappointed by my recent visit. Won’t rush back.

I went here for a quick solo dinner yesterday as I wanted something good quality but with no frills. The staff are very friendly and were happy to help when I couldn't figure out how to open my drink! I got the guy-don beef bowl which I would recommend if you would like something simple but hearty and delicious. The portion size was really good, I only just about finished it. I'll definitely go back as there were so many things I wanted to try on the menu.

Merrion Centre

We came excited to try their ramen and we ordered quite a few sides and two bowls of ramen. It kind of ruined the night as we would have had better food at home. Everything down to the edamame was so old and reheated to the point of falling apart before being eaten. Ramen were also terrible clearly pre boiled noodles with pot dried condiments . Also do not order the tuna katsu as it was over cooked and reheated. The service was poor I tried to signal for water but despite being the only customers in nobody cared. Sad to give such a poor review but I want to warn people so they don’t waste their weekend meal out or a date.

Tempura and sushi were really delicious and the citrus sake was delicious. I also liked the atmosphere too. However, the ramen and udon dish we had was poor. The ramen was more like Pho with ramen noodles and lacking flavour and texture. The udon noodle dish was quite mushy too. For the price of the ramen and the udon dish we were expecting something better but we were disappointed.

Food and presentation were terrible. Ordered beef chilli ramen, and the food looked like everything was thrown into the bowl without any care. Beef was overcooked and chewy. Instead of being a spicy broth I was expecting, it was just a spoonful of some sort of sriracha sauce on top of the ramen. The waitress was friendly and attentive, which was the only saving grace for this restaurant. For the price, it was also disappointing to eat my food with cheap disposable chopsticks.

I have never been to Fuji Hiro and it was bit of an impromptu visit after work worh a colleague, the restaurant was quiet as we were early around 4.45pm. We were greeted immediately and shown to a table, the waiter had to explain how the sushi starter worked as we weren't sure, the food was delicious 😋 not enough wine options and no cider options at all, I had a glass of Merlot which was pleasant. We had a 3 sushi starter to share and then Katsu Curry and Terryaki beef for mains, prices were reasonable, the bill came to £48 for a starter to share, two mains with rice a merlot and diet coke.

Very disappointed! Haven’t been to Fuji Hiro in many years, so was very excited to be able to visit again. The food was shocking! The side of wings where frazzled to the point the meat had frazzled away and all was left was the burnt skin. For main I went for the chilli chicken ramen, disgusting, the chicken had been over cooked, how chicken can be dry in a bowl of liquid is beyond me. No flavour what’s so ever! Wish I had taken photos of the chicken wings! Honestly never experienced anything like it! Very disappointed, will never be coming back.

Lovely place, fantastic choice but food was 'good'...service took some time (main course came 60 mins in). Lot of kids in. But...the bill was very reasonable and I'd return. Excellent authentic Japanese restaurant. The food here is genuine Japanese rather than the modified for western ideas, of other restaurants. Its very good quality and nicely presented. Value is excellent. Of course you can definitely spend more if you choose to. On the negative: The service can be slow if the place is busy and they dont seem to have grasped the standard idea that you sit your customer down, provide a menue then take a drinks order. You often get seated then ignored, no menue or drinks. Trying to order drinks before the meal is really hard, waitresses look everywhere else but at you and even when you do finally get your order in, often the meal arrives before the drinks. Food arrives haphazardly. I recently ordered two meals. Mine arrived, no sign of my partners which eventually arrivedcafter I had finished mine. It seams that nobody is actually in charge and organising the service. Waiters seem to mostly be Chinese students who frankly do not have a clue. Overall I would recommend Fuji Hero to anyone who wants genuine Japanese dining.

We’ve been going to Fuji for 20-25 years - since uni no less. Extremely disappointed we were made to pay a mandatory service charge today. The service was a bit slow but of a very poor standard. Not at all attentive. Probably understandable that green tea is chargeable, but not expected. It never was before We paid separately, but they charged some of us twice for that tea and that service. So disappointing the Fuji Hiro standards of old have been allowed to slip so far.

This is definitely the worst dining experience I've encountered. Despite waiting for our dishes for an hour, the waiter's responses regarding this matter was ridiculous. He was very unapologetic and gave us that cheeky smiles in response when we ask him regarding the wait time. They even mistakenly double charged one of the dishes that we ordered. As someone with previous experience as a waitress, I would say the customer service in this restaurant is totally unacceptable.

Just one of the most horrendous experience I’ve ever had in a restaurant. Waited for more than an hour for our dishes, which is ridiculous for such a small restaurant. However, the most infuriating part is the attitude of the staffs. Throughout the wait we have asked several times how long is it going to take, but every time he (the guy with long hair overall) just went to ask the kitchen and never came back, how am I supposed to decide whether to cancel the order or wait for it? Also every time we asked him about this, the way he smile in a very cheeky way makes me think that he finds us making a fuss over such a small matter, which made us so uncomfortable and is super infuriating. Other than the wait and the horrific attitude of the staffs, they served two separate sushi rolls we ordered on the same plate without even telling us, who in their right mind does that? I am not even going to mention other minor frustrations like giving us an incorrect bill with items double charged. I will never ever visit this restaurant again in my life and I hope this message gets to every single person attempting to visit it.

I have been going to Fuji Hiro for over 20 years. However it really changed for the worse. It is clearly under new ownership and has different chefs. Over priced a men noodle dish is now £21.00 with service charge not even half the quality of what it used to be and vastly more expensive. Poor ingredients prawns were over cooked and small no where near the quality and size I have had here. Green tea was free with unlimited top ups now £1.50 a cup. Food was served on a cold plate and was tepid when it arrived the chef was saying it was just made not difficult if you serve food on a stone cold plate it won’t be hot. The place was a gem the ownership it appears has changed this place was the best in Leeds no question not now sadly. I hope it improves.

Went here as a change from our usual (Little Tokyo) and also because we had gourmet society membership which the restaurant had subscribed to for 25% off. We booked stating this (required for the deal) but when we arrived we were told they couldn't honour it (they must have subscribed previously). They would have given us 20% off of we were Chinese. We stayed anyway but the food was bad overall! We had pork ramen which was good, seafood ramen where everything was super overcooked, and teriyaki salmon noodles which was ridiculously overcooked. Food was bad anyway aside from refusing the deal. Will not be going back. You will get a much better meal at most of the other Japanese restaurants.

Fuji Hiro has changed quite a bit since I first visited some 20 years ago. The decor and ambience remain reassuringly spartan, but the menu has bloomed with rococo extravagance. It was tempting, but my son and I stuck with our favourites: chilli chicken ramen and spiced chicken men. Over the years, we have searched in vain for a dish of ramen to equal those served at Fuji Hiro. My son, recently returned from Japan, has now completed the quest. Ramen as good as this is served at a high tech art gallery in Tokyo but they only do vegan and it's a different style - not equal - but equally good. The chicken men consists of slices of marinated chicken in a peanut sauce served on top of noodles. We haven't found its like elsewhere. With green tea for him and a black Sapporo beer for me, it came in at about £40, a steal. The gyoza are also exceptionally good and most dishes have a vegan equivalent - all of which are excellent. Coming away from the place, I feel, as I always do, that I have improved myself. The food is clean and fresh, exquisitely balanced, indulgent, but virtuous.

Really disappointing. Twenty years ago this place was amazing. Even just over a year ago this place was still amazing. However, now, this place is average at best. It used to be heaving, but it was dead when I went in - should have been a bit of a giveaway. The menu has physically changed, which is fair… but there were no detailed descriptions of the meals anymore. The food wasn’t a patch on what it used to be. Sad to say after all these years, I will not be retuning. I’m hoping there are better Japanese cafes in Leeds now.

So unfortunately a bad experience, the staff were accommodating and were really good up until the end, excluding the delay for drinks. Drinks order was taken, 10 mins later food order was taken, 10mins later starters arrive. 10 mins later. No sign of drinks so had to ask, arrived in 30 seconds so clearly forgotten but not fussed about that it doesn’t really matter. Main courses arrive. I ordered the “chicken man noodles” well… it tasted entirely like someone had heated up peanut butter in pan and mixed it with vinegar. I had one mouth full and my partner had one too to confirm it was disgusting. I managed to get the waiters attention after 5 mins and told him I simply didn’t like that dish. He said no problem would you like it taking away, to which I answered yes please. No offer of something else instead so I just thought “meh if they’re not bothered im not going to re order”. Everything else was fine and it comes to getting the bill ( I was charged for the dish to my later surprise £14 ) I payed the bill and he asked me why I didn’t like the dish, my reply “ it tasted exclusively like someone had mixed peanut butter and vinegar together and poured it over noodles” he says “yes that’s basically what it is, anyway some people like it” so I say “ hang on did you charge me for that dish?” To which he replied “ yes unfortunately I still have to bill you for it” to which I replied “ oh right that just means we won’t be coming back again and I’ll tell my friends not to bother” to which he replied “ well the ingredients were used so doesn’t matter if you liked it” we then left the restaurant £60 down, and disappointed with our meal, I got a Chinese takeaway from harbour city on scotthall road on the way home and couldn’t recommend them more lol

I've yet to work out how anyone eats that rice with chopsticks wasnt even sticky rice was something that looked like basmati rice that falls through the chopsticks. I've had katsu curry at all the restaurants I eat at I call it my tester meal this scores lowest the sauce was bland. The gyozas were terrible kinda like half streamed half fried was abit weird all didnt really taste of much still a very generous filling. The squid balls were prob the only best part of the meal and the potato salad thing could of used Japanese mayo instead of english. I was expecting the real japanese chef to be cooking the meals but it must of been the sous chef that wasnt even japanese. Overall wont make a revisit.

Booked in advance. Staff is nice. Ordered a sashimi don with a variety of sashimi. The sashimis fine until I ate the scallop…(I keep it in for the last as I love scallop) and it taste terrible. You know the taste if seafood is not fresh or not appropriate to eat as it smells like…faeces(?) I chewed a bit and then I spitted it out. Then I tried to talk to a waitress, she was nice. I asked her to smell and she also notice that there were something wrong. However the boss insist this is fresh scallop…haha. I mean, fresh does not mean it is okay to eat if the quality goes wrong. That’s a pity to this supper and I feel like my opinion was disregarded. To be honest I did not ask for any refund or replacement, I just want to remind them if their food is non-edible, but the boss is solely impolite. And I think the boss thought I do not know about sashimi, however he can deceive anyone but not Hongkonger who are really expertises to Japanese food.

The tonkotsu ramen was excellent, but service was a little slow and it was a bit expensive for what it was. I also tried the pork Katsu, which is the main reason for my earlier comment on the high prices as I feel like £9 for a side dish is a bit steep, especially when the side dish is quite small. However, the Tonkotsu Ramen was delicious, with a hearty broth and garnished wonderfully. The best Ramen I've had in Leeds so far, but it isn't cheap!

I’ve been going to Fuji for almost 20 years, and always loved it but the last few years it’s gone downhill, with tonight being the final straw. Booked a table for 2, arrived to be told they didn’t have our booking (because they only copy the bookings down on a morning and don’t look again through the day or something) and couldn’t seat us for 1.5 hours (despite showing them the confirmation from their website!) They said they had other bookings…. Erm but we had booked too?! After much toing and froing, we were seated awkwardly, and then waited 55 mins for our food! The food was still good, but not excellent like it used to be. My husband asked for no veg and it came with veg all mixed in but by now we just didn’t have time to wait for them to remake it. The staff seemed really busy, but everyone was waiting an age for their food, and all of the tables weren’t full, it was all very strange. Sadly it’s our last time 😢

The sushi didn't taste as fresh as other restaurants, and the staff, whilst very friendly, didn't really understand the menu fully without a conversation between a number of them that took a good 10 minutes.

Both me and the wife were very disappointed with this meal. Service wasn't great, for example drinks arrived after the mains. My dish of Beef and rice was stewed and lacked flavour. The wife says about her meal that is was evident that is wasn't freshly cooked, she wasnt very pleased with it at all. We honestly both said that wished we had gone to Wetherspoons instead.

My wife and I came back on a monthly basic to this lovely place both of us or with friends and family. Always a delight, team smiling, food amazing. We are never in a hurry so we don't mind a bit of wait. Everything cook fresh and made to order !

When people talk about independent restaurants, which are authentic, and worth walking a few corners for? This is one of those. And one of the top in Leeds. Thank you for bringing a taste of Japan to Leeds.

Best sushi in the uk. Small restaurant but a hidden gem. We come from York at least once a month just too eat here.

I have been coming here for many years now and it is my favourite authentic Japanese restaurant in Leeds. Great portions, great value and really friendly staff who always make me feel welcome when dining in or when I call to pick up food on my way home from work.

Used to absolutely adore this place, but the service is now shocking… been coming here for the past 5 years and very regularly. This evening i went and was completely ignored and was sat for 30 mins without the order even been taken. Two other couples were seated and had orders taken before us! The prices have increased, they have new menus but the staff have no idea how to run the restaurant. In the end we got up and left!! This restaurant is now more bothered about the deliveries than they are the seated customers. Will not be returning. Very very disappointed!

A small yet decent Japanese restaurant with a wide menu. The portion sizes were very good and decently priced, and the service was fairly quick. Really enjoyed my side dishes (crab tempura and prawn gyoza) however my katsu chicken was a bit chewy for my liking (but the sauce was delicious). Will be sure to visit again and try more of the menu!

Good choice of vegetarian dishes. Easy to order. Delivered a few minutes earlier than estimated time by a friendly and polite man. A few extras included. Delicious all round!

Incredible food. The hot pork belly dish is sensational. Add the fried egg. It works. Definitely only for those who like spicy. 😋 The club next door's music making the whole place vibrate just adds to the Bangkok feel of the place.

So very sad to see that Raies has closed after so many years. Thank you Max and all that's worked with him over the 40 years of business. I have lots of great memories over the years. I 1st started going in 1983 and will miss you now you have closed. I have one 'Max's favourite' left in the freezer that I will enjoy. Including having to call in on a Monday to apologies after falling out over delivery times on Saturday nights. The curries you have served have always been so enjoyable. Best wishes in you're retirement Max.
