Always desperate for a coffee when I get off the train from Glasgow, and Milk is right beside the Market Street station exit. I’ve tried a few near here, but now make for Milk. Exceptionally good coffee. Add to that the quality of the scones - often a major source of dissatisfaction - fresh, moist, buttery, light. Then there’s the staff, without exception friendly and pleasant.

The service is a wee bit slow here, but it is really worth the effort to hang out and taste the delights they have to offer. And the bookshop and art gallery are immediately accessible and great to go and mill around in, taking in ideas, inspiration, or possibly just zoning out for a bit. And they do the best coffee!

Me encanta comer aquí.

Went for lunch with a friend and I won’t be returning. We arrived just after noon and were handed clipboards with breakfast menus. We eventually found the lunch menus right at the back. I ordered chicken salad which was inedible. The pieces of chicken were curling at the edges and turning translucent. I’m not a food professional but my eye told me these were long past their best yet the kitchen was happy to send them out. The coffee, however, was good.

I had 30 mins to kill before a train and needed breakfast. The taxi driver recommended the Market st cafe opposite. I paid £14 for a cooked breakfast and tea and the quality was so bad that I left it and walked out. I intended to go to Wetherspoons as a safe bet but after walking past the Fruitmarket I decided to go in there instead The staff at the Fruitmarket were extremely friendly, polite and efficient. I ordered the Avocado toast with a poached egg and Chorizo which was delicious (especially with their home made hot sauce). The cafe was fairly busy and had a nice feel to it. With a pot of loose leaf Earl Grey tea, the total was under £10. I cannpt believe I wasted money in what turned out to be a hipster greasy spoon over the road. After my breakfast, I had a look around the art exhibition which (although wasn't really to my taste) was fun to doI'll be back here whenever I'm waiting for a train from Waverley station in the future

We saw a sign that said 'please wait to be seated' which we adhered to and were ignored for about 5 minutes whilst my daughter cried because she wanted to climb the stairs (at this point someone from the gallery came over and offered my daughter a worksheet and pencil for her to colour which was a lifesaver) Then two separate groups walked past us to some of the empty tables and they were given menus. At which point we decided to leave. We were completely ignored for following the rules of the establishment while those who ignored the sign ended up with a table. If a place has a 'please wait to be seated' sign then it should be monitored.

This eatery inside the gallery has recently changed hands and is very poor compared with what was known as The Fruitmarket Gallery Cafe (which had been exceptionally good). This was our second visit as we thought the first time was poor but wanted to give it another go in case it had improved. Sadly, there is no improvement. Both times we entered the cafe - the staff looked bored and uninterested in customers. There was a table free with four chairs but there were five of us, so the member of staff who came to see us just stood by without a greeting or any help while one of us went to find another chair for ourselves. Staff politeness is cursory at best, much of the time they look as if they just don't care at all - about the food or the customers. We tried a range of dishes - falafel with hummus and 'herby slaw' . The falafel was dry and fairly tasteless. The herby slaw was mostly cabbage with a few threads of other vegetables but could have done with some apple to sweeten it, and needed a proper dressing. Another choice we tried was dahl with sweet potatoe - served with some flatbread, salad leaves and green beans. The dahl was not dahl - it was a mixture of some lentils cooked in a thin tomato and onion sauce with added sweet potato - not at all spicey and was unseasoned (and probably untasted by who ever made it). Would have been greatly improved by cooking with some cummin and coriander, at least. The flatbreads were exceptionally thin, dry and dull. The only good thing on the plate was the dressed green beans - a lovely nutty taste with the toasted hazelnuts and maybe some hazelnut oil plus some grated orange zest. Soup was said to be good! The baking was more promising - some good apricot scones, delicious chocolate truffle slices (vegan)- intense and moist with seeds and petals on top! I would be tempted to go again for just coffee and cake but the lack of welcome and sloppy service from staff would be too much to put up with!

I came at a quiet time and the service was quick and the waitress very correct and efficient. I ordered the Isle of Mull Cheddar toasted sandwich and it was nothing less than superb. The menu changes with the seasons and includes a lot of interesting salad varieties that add an extra something to the meal. Very tasty bread served in thick slices. The coffee was very good and the prices very reasonable for what I was served. An outstandingly good meal and a great overall experience as you have a well stocked bookshop as well as the art gallery upstairs. I was here yesterday for lunch with my husband and daughter during her busy working day. The feta and everything else salad was OK but most of the things in it were undefinable, except for the greens. We hadn't realised the place had changed hands. We did not like the enamels plates and bowls, felt like camping gear. My husband had soup and sandwich. The soup in the enamel bowl tasted fine but was Luke-warm and quickly became cool in the enamel bowl. The 'sandwich' was one slice of bread, not two, although thickly laden with pickle. Salad price OK but vaguely warm soup and half a sandwich for £7.50 was over the top. Staff spent more time talking with visiting friends than with checking on customers. Eventually they took order for coffee. We waited ages and decided to go - they did apologise as they had 'forgotten'(!) the coffees. Enjoyed our coffee instead across the road. Get your act together, Fruitmarket, or you will continue to lose customers who formerly enjoyed coming. Sorry but I've had to give a poor review.

Have enjoyed popping into this very central cafe over the years but on this instance it was just ok ish . Took my daughters in for a quick coffee but it was anything but quick . The 4 staff seemed to be struggling to cope with the 4 tables that were occupied . We had to wait a good time before we were shown to the largely empty cafe . Staff were polite and took our order effeciently but what a wait .

Had a late lunch there with a friend during Edinburgh festival. It's a nice, light and airy cafe with an art gallery attached, very close to Waverley Railway station. The cafe serves good homemade soup, interesting salads, platters of mezes, Spanish tapas and fish (smoked salmon and mackerel pate), and great looking cake. I had the Spanish tapas which included chorizo, omelette, olives, pepper salad and a roll. It was tasty and filling. The gallery also sells cards, calendars and gifts. So cafe, art gallery and shop all in one.

Morning coffee with my elderly parents. Milk jug was cracked. I thought in a pleasant manner that I suggested it ought to be binned. Waitress assured me that they did not have enough milk jugs and it needed to be used. Really?

I've eaten lunch here before and salad was really good. This time we popped in to rest our weary feet and have coffee. The selection of cakes looked enticing so we ordered the Victoria sponge with blueberries and raspberries, which was demolished in minutes and a rhubarb tart which was served with creme fraiche and fresh crushed ginger, was amazing. Location is ideal for Waverley station.

My husband and I have eaten here on quite a few occasions and the food has always been very nice. Its really nice to find somewhere that serves something different which the fruitmarket gallery does. They have a great variety of hot and cold food, offer specials of the day and do really very good coffee, tea and cakes. Portions are a good size and everything always looks very appealing and tastes fab. The filled rolls are wonderful and the salads even better! It isn't a huge café and can get quite busy but I think that's just testament to the good food and atmosphere. Staff have always been friendly and helpful.

Not only is this café located inside a super cosy gallery, it's got the tastiest food and the most delicious cakes you've ever tried. Honestly, it's ridiculous how good the food is. And innovative and healthy! Combinations I'd never have thought of myself (mind you, I'm not big on the cooking...) The current staff's not great, they could be friendlier and more efficient, but it almost doesn't matter. It's all about the food in here. If they have the gluten -and lactose free almond and orange cake, try it. It's amazing.

Last weekend, I visited the gallery and bookshop, as recommended by a friend - both were very enjoyable (they are currently exhibiting John Lambie). Whilst waiting for my friend, I stopped for tea and cake at the cafe and was pleasantly surprised with their selection of teas. I went for their loose leaf fruit tea, which was really pleasant and enjoyed a delicious rhubarb pie with double cream. It was a really pleasant cafe to relax and watch the world go by and the lunch menu also looked interesting and varied. The staff were really friendly and welcoming - I would definitely go back again!

Met up here on Saturday for a catch up with friends. Nice menu with some unusual choices - although it would have been nice to choose between 2 soups instead of there just being one option. Food arrived quickly and was tasty. We all had cake afterwards - I can recommend the carrot cake - it was delicious! Only disappointment was that they ran out of scones pretty quickly and that was what my husband really wanted. All in, a nice lunch and didn't feel rushed to leave although there were other people waiting.

When we visit the Edinburgh Fringe we try to do lunch here as the quality and service are excellent. The menu hasn't changed in the 8 years we have been coming here although there are usually a couple of soups on offer as well as 3 main dishes as specials. The staff are always helpful and efficient. There is always a good choice of cakes/tarts for desserts. Hopefully we'll be back next year.

One of my favorite places for lunch, coffee and art bang in the city centre. Servers are nice, managers are rather impolite. Beware, they stop serving food at 4. We had to learn it the hard way. My only bad experience was when we arrived at 3:50 and waited for the server to take our lunch order. She finally came at 4 and said 'oops we stopped serving lunch ten minutes ago'. We were not aware of this in advance and tried to explain that we were here before 4 and she didn't even give us the heads up when she was walking us to our table. The server who didn't speak English well then asked for the manager and she tried very hard to prove us wrong, told us she was watching us and we got here right at 4... We of course had to leave and made sure next time we came early enough and ordered at the counter instead of waiting for their slow service. The food is good and healthy and the gallery is definitely one of the best in the city. Most of the times the service is good too.

We had 2 soups and shared a mezze platter between two people+one glass of wine, we paid just over £20 which seems good to me. The mint and pea soup was tasty and the platter had several dips and bits all of which we liked. There is a variety of other hot and cold dishes on the menu too. The young waiter was a bit distracted but he is probably a highly qualified academic who can't get any other job so we were forgiving!

A cafe, to me is a place where you cone in, sit down, order and drink coffee, eat cake and have a chat. At least that us what thus place was the last time i was there. It now appears to be a restaurant. Having arrived with my mum and brother to have a look at the gallery and a coffee we were turned away as they were 'only serving people for lunch'. This dispite their being two tables free. Ok, you make more money at lunch, but who is to say a coffee and scone is not lunch? It is for my mum...I amiable told the water that thus was fine but straight after phoned to enquire if this was actually their policy. It is. This was not clear from the sign telling us to wait to be seated. We left without seeing the art, shame for the artists who exhibit in this place that the supporting facility, the attached cafe supporting the point of the place, is so pretentious. Had a lovely coffee in the Portrait gallery ten minutes later. Stay clear.

Working fairly close by, a friend and I decided to pop in during lunch for scones and soup. As for most working people, time during the day is restricted. When we arrived at the venue there was a queue, however, since we were there already, we decided to wait. We waited for 20 minutes in the line to be seated, which was fine. Eventually we were seated. We waited a further 7 minutes to have our order taken. When the waitress finally took our order we were told that during the busy lunch period, only customers wanting 'proper' food were being serviced; scones and soup was not considered a 'full' order. We were asked to change our order or leave. My friend at this point got up to check to see whether there were any signs by the queue informing patrons of this policy. There were none that we could see. I asked to speak to the manager. The 'manager' - a young student who obviously worked there part-time and seemed not to possess any people skills whatsoever - very rudely told us that we were wasting their time and that we should either re-order or leave. She also showed us a sign near the cash register that informed customers of their lunch time policy (this sign was impossible to see from the queue).By this time my friend and I had almost exhausted our lunch break, however, we decide not to change our order on principle and left. I would not advise anyone to visit this cafe during the busy summer months as the staff have the potential to be intolerably rude. I have not been off season. Perhaps staff are able to deal more cordially with customers when there are fewer of them?!

Had a late lunch here - Sunday - with a friend during festival fever time. I ate here a while back and the service was slow and indifferent but hugely improved today, despite the smallish café being packed full. Food quality excellent - pork shoulder special and falafel wrap followed by very decent cakes; rhubarb tart especially good. As you'd imagine at this time of year, a fun, lively atmosphere with a street scene view over to the City Art Gallery. Good value too for top end café food. Well worth eating here if you're in this part of town.

This eatery is tucked into a building on Market Street (across from the City Art Gallery), on the Old Town side of Edinburgh's Waverley train station. It shares the venue with an art gallery (2 floors) and a small but impressive book/gift shop. It does get busy, but we love it and are willing to overlook what most people consider nuisance factors (occasionally having to wait, seating being a bit tight, etc.) in order to enjoy lunches that are not only different in terms of content (in the nicest possible way - stuff for vegetarians, too), but are different in the sense that they are consistently interesting (the menus is not the normal fare) and also consistently good (better than most). My last time I had a Morroccan Mezze (a selection of goodies including pita, hummus, leaves etc) that was excellent. My daughter had a seeded roll full of greens etc. For dessert (always yummy here) we had cake. Zuchinni for me, carrot for her...thought both were virtually identical. When finished - and if you're into clothing - continue around the corner to Jeffrey Street, where the shop Corniche offers a highly eclectic selection of brands and is a major stopping point for visiting stars - music, artists, actors - to the city. There are other nearby cafés owned by the same firm - find these in the website below.

The Fruitmarket Gallery Cafe is a small cafe in the art gallery. It's not too far from Waverley Station. There aren't many seats but we arrived shortly after they opened at 11am and had no problem getting a table. Their cakes all looked very good and my husband chose the raspberry and white chocolate cake, with a beautifully prepared cappuccino. I was hungry for an early lunch and had a ham, mature cheddar and fig chutney sandwich in a freshly baked seed roll. It was served with a small salad and chunky chips. The salad had cherry tomatoes, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and red peppers in a mustard vinaigrette. The chips were fried just right. Everything was very fresh and the bread in particular was excellent. It is a little more expensive than your average cafe but the the ingredients are high quality so the price is justified.

As a singleton popping in for some lunch I certainly didn't get much of a welcome. I felt more of an inconvenience than anything else and was squashed in beside a table of two that had been changed to a three. Instead of having someone's back in my lunch (even after the 20min wait) I took my custom elsewhere. Won' t bother going back too much choice elsewhere.

We wondered around many other places and decided for this places because of the initial kindness of the waitress when we where passing by and had a question. Went back for lunch and had a great lentil soup, salmon with salad and green juice. We decided to go back the next day, as we wanted something different from the regular pizza, hamburgers and such offered around. This was my first time here, and It was very good! My only complaints were that the drinks came a while before the food & that the small breakfast egg was quite greasy. The food tasted great though & the presentation was lovely. The tables were cleared efficiently as customers left & it was overall a rather peaceful atmosphere. Would recommend.
