We had our son's and new Daughter in law's ,wedding here last Saturday. Wow , it was totally amazing. Kate, the owner, is such a wonderful lady who helped us through, from booking venue to wedding day. Can't thank Kate enough. A beautiful wedding venue

This is a very pretty wedding venue just outside Exeter. The dining area is very light with beautiful doors looking out onto the vineyard and high ceilings with wooden beams. There is a further area with a good sized dancefloor. A great venue, my only complaint being the gravel on the steps, not great for navigating in your best wedding shoes. The food was not good. We were served burgers in the evening that were inedible. Most went in the bin. Even the bread roll was past it’s best. The high tea was also not pleasant. My sister also went to an event here and got food poisoning. A great venue, if you can use outside catering.

We could not have found a better venue for our daughters wedding. Beautiful barn, grounds and vines. Lovely tranquil setting, you would think you were in Provence and it was great to sit around the fire as the sun went down. Kate and the team are wonderful, warm, friendly and super helpful. Our guests said it was the best wedding they had been to.

We stopped here for lunch in the last day of our holiday Devon, and so pleased we did. What a find. The venue is so pretty inside and out. The staff were more than friendly and helpful. We ordered a mixture of afternoon teas and lunch and it was delicious, and great value. Be warned to bring your appetite if ordering the "toad" the huge fresh scones, jam and clotted cream were gorgeous.

I was invited to a wedding here back in Feb 2016. I can certainly see why this location was chosen as it has a real country feel to it and is very wintery and cosy. There is a tractor/combine harvester indoors which adds to the countryside theme! It is essentially a converted barn! The only trouble I had was on arrival, my friend and I really struggled with parking and then couldn't find the entrance. No clear signs for the door and we ended up crawling under a large garage door which one of the wedding band members had rolled up to let us in!! We embarrassingly had to manoeuvre through the band equipment with all of the wedding guests watching!! Once we were in, it was very obvious where the door was!

We have passed this place many times but have never been in. However, desperate for a coffee we stopped here last week. What a find! Warm, welcoming and the best scones I have eaten for a long while. This is a lovely venue and they deserve to succeed. Sadly the cafe is now closed for the winter but we will be visiting again in the New Year. One comment though, I think they might benefit from better signage that really stands out when driving past on what is a busy stretch of road.

I have only recently discovered this lovely cafe and only reviewed in June as we had a lovely lunch. However we popped in for afternoon tea and I was so disappointed with the scone I had, it was heavy and very very doughy almost inedible, but my stalwart hubby always finishes what i don't! Please change the recipe so i can visit again for afternoon tea and enjoy the lovely outlook. Delia Smiths Buttermilk scones are wonderful, just a suggestion. The carrot cake my daughter had was delicious so no complaints there.

We stopped off on our way back to East Devon from a day out in Exeter and Exmouth. We only really called for my partner to get some cider but we really liked the look of the place so thought we would grab a quick cream tea (it was twenty minutes before closing time but rustling up 4 cream teas was no problem at all).It was a beautiful afternoon so we sat outside. The teas (and pint) were bought out and oh my...what a sight. Served on proper china plates, tea in a proper teapot, china teacups and saucers, and plenty of hot water. Warm, light scones, clotted cream and delicious strawberry jam. The tea was also delicious and so refreshing. The whole thing was utterly delicious and very reasonable...the cider was excellent too, and the service made it perfect...friendly and efficient. If we are ever back in the area we will call without a doubt. Very highly recommended! Thank you!

Upstairs is a shop/display area with good quality and unique merchandise on display. Lovely people, lovely environment, wish I'd known about this before! Just right to take a friend for a light lunch/snack and/or coffee, and browse. Look forward to visiting in the summer months! Perfect atmosphere, cannot be faulted.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I drive past Froginwell on my way to work ever day, and one Saturday early in the summer my wife and I decided to give it a try. Despite arriving 15 minutes late for Breakfast, the staff were happy to let us order anyway, and the food was excellent. We loved the feel of the place, and the little homewares shop upstairs was an added bonus. All in all it was a great experience, and we were looking forward to coming back regularly and bringing family when they visit. However, since then we have failed to successfully visit once because the Café is never open when we need it. I work full time during the week, but we love going out for brunch at the weekends. However, despite earlier reviews raving about their Sunday breakfasts, they have now decided to close on Sundays. On top of that, they are only open on a Saturday if they do not have a wedding on that day. Throughout the summer months we could therefore never rely on the Café being opened because we always had to assume that, it being a Saturday in the summer, they could well have a wedding. We were hoping that once the summer came to an end, and wedding season was over, we might be able to start going on Saturdays again, but I read today on their blog that they are closing over the winter! On top of that, they not only don't open the cafe on the day of weddings, but also the day before, and it sounds like they are increasingly getting Friday wedding bookings, are are also closed on Mondays. Which means the only days you can *rely* on them being open are Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the summer!Overall it sounds like Weddings are their main business (and I can see that it would be an amazing wedding venue), with the Café just a hobby on the side to fill the gaps. It doesn't sound like they are serious about building up regular clientele for the Café, which is a real shame because it's wonderful when it's open.So my advice would be that if you're passing and by good fortune the Café is open, then grab your chance. But don't plan a visit without checking ahead of time that they are open, and don't get your hopes up that they might be.In the meantime I will continue to be taunted by the sign I see outside advertising the Café on my way to work every day!

Two years ago, Kate suggested I return after writing a somewhat critical review about an unwelcoming place. We did as she asked and in consequence, 63 of us celebrated our silver wedding anniversary with great food, fabulous ambience and staff who worked their socks off unobtrusively.Simon Benn of Two coast catering produced a mountainous carvery which left no-one hungry and good comments being fed back from many guests.Later in the afternoon we feasted on a cream tea with enough cream and jam to cover twice the number of scones that we asked for, the scones are still huge and fabulous and one is more than sufficient unless you are very hungry (there's a challenge). The setting is wonderful with guests having a choice of indoor or outdoor socialising. It is accessible. As a wedding venue, this is fabulous.

I think my expectations were too high as I visited after several recommendations. I know it is popular particularly among the over 60's as I know people who go there regularly, particularly for afternoon tea. I have visited twice. Once it was closed and from memory,it is closed on Mondays. It was very busy the second time I went and we could not get a table. There is seating inside and out but it was too cold to sit out the day we went. The menu seemed reasonable. There is also a little shop attached. .... And probably lovely to have lunch too - if you like carbs. Lots of lovely looking cakes and scones but everything served in, or with, bread (wraps are available as a substitute for bread). There was a goats cheese salad on the menu, but the waitress was unable to substitute the goats cheese for another topping (that was available in bread). To be fair, there was a note on the table explaining that they had reduced the walk-in lunch menu in favour of wedding bookings and planning, etc. and perhaps we are just too fussy, but there are lots of more accommodating lunch venues in the area. We didn't eat there so I shall rate my visit (below) as average as I can only honestly rate the service.

Popped over to Froginwell today for lunch and felt minded to give them a review. It is probably the 5th or 6th time we have been and it is consistently good every time. The location is lovely the interior is clean and bright, well lit and welcoming. As is the owner "Kate" and her assistant. Considering there are only two staff, they turn out a small but very tasty menu and are a welcome stop for a light lunch or an all day breakfast. A coffee or a sandwich. I had not had a ploughman's for years but the one I had today was just right. Warm crusty artisan bread, apple and celery, pickled onions done in Balsamic and some nice cheese and stunning ham. Just right in both quantity and quality. Washed it down with two pints of their draught cider and I must say it was wonderful. A very welcoming sight on a cold day.The food was extremely tasty and their own wine delicious. They give you tasters of their wine too, which is a nice gesture.I wanted a chicken dish, cooked with white wine and cream. The wedding couple arranged a hog roast for us guests which was very tasty and the salads were excellent. We were fortunate enough to visit on a dry day but I imagine that wet weather would do a lot to change the dynamics of a wedding. I can see this side of the business growing in the next few years.

The wonderful light and airy barn serves meals, snacks and drinks and the Froginwell wine is absolutely delicious. It is light and fruity and perfect as an accompaniment to a meal or to be drunk on its own. The sparkling cider 'Frog Legs' is also brewed on site and easily surpasses most of the other ciders available commercially. It is a true taste of the Devonshire countryside - with fizz. This is a small vineyard that really deserves to do well and has truly converted us to English wines

When my (then) husband-to-be and I had Froginwell suggested to us as a wedding reception venue, we had to check it out and what better way than to "mystery shop" it and go for lunch and afternoon tea!Kate, Simon and the rest of the team were great; quick friendly service with a smile. Between us we had a hearty pie and mash and Simon's signature dish, a Froginwell twist on a traditional coq au vin. Both were lovely and we have since recommended it to friends and family as a lovely place to have a spot of lunch. On a separate occasion (we didn't have room all in the same visit!) we also stopped by for a delicious cream tea; they've won prizes for their scones you know, and I can tell why!We loved it so much, we decided that we would have our wedding reception there and my (now!) husband and I are so pleased that we did, we had a marvellous time. All of our friends and family that came to celebrate with us agree that the venue was perfect; a beautiful Devon setting, with helpful staff, good food, good cheer and fab cider (some members of the family even braving the April weather and staying in the Caravan Clun site there). I live close by but it took visitors from outside the area to phone and say they were at Froginwell for me to pay my first visit. I have passed so many times along the main Sidmouth road from Exeter and this place does not look inviting but go down the lane and you'll be impressed. The car parking is at the side of a beautifully clipped lawned area with picnic tables and sun brollies (a rare hot day!) all with beautiful views of the vineyard. The barn itself is just that with a selection of quality souvenir type items, cider, wine etc. A small bar has a draught ale, soft drinks, coffee etc. and not expensive. Wonderfully friendly staff. We only had drinks but saw snack food being taken out and it looked great especially some vast creamy desserts that were bringing appreciative noises from the diners. Motorists wanting a break on their way through Devon heading for Cornwall or back to London or the North might consider this instead of the busy Exeter service station. Leave M5 at junction 30 and follow the Sidmouth road past West Point and Crealy for about ten minutes. Will certainly go back.

First day of the 2014 season and as usual there was a lovely warm welcome from the staff all were smiling as well.Everywhere was clean and the woodburner was well lit and also welcoming.A new area has been utilised to display the unusual and different goods for sale. The food was faultless, well seasoned and piping hot.New range of soft drinks were definitely tasty. All in all Kate and her crew have done a marvellous update on last season can't wait for another opportunity to stop off to try another delicious meal.

We paid £5 each for a trip aroind this little vineyard. I thought it was expensive. Howlever the cream tea in the cafe afterwards was well worth the extra money.

I have passed Froginwell on numerous occasions and never really taken much notice and I always intended to stop and have a look around, finally got there on the way back from Sidmouth and I was most impressed. My wife and I thought we we would call in and have a cup of tea once we got there we upgraded to a shared cream tea as we had previously had lunch. The quality was excellent very large and tasty fruit scone, delicious strawberry jam and wonderful clotted cream. We sat next to a very inviting wood burning stove which was most welcome on such a miserable day. A lot of interesting items for sale in the shop and a good selection of locally brewed ales and wine. This will now be on our regular stop off list for coffee.Bootle45

What a fabulous place with great staff and the hostess with the mostest. We really enjoy visiting this inviting and homely restaurant. Wanting lunch in the area we initially visited a nearby popular but extremely busy, expensive and overcrowded outlet nearby. People queuing and chatter noise echoing with small portions of expensive food made us change our minds to eat there and visited Froginwell which we have only recently discovered. The food was absolutely great. Fast and efficient service and a lovely roaring log burner. Great atmosphere, great food and as I have said lovely staff. It was cold and raining outside but get through that door and meet lovely people and a warm friendly atmosphere. Only complaint not open enough! Never should be closed as to good to miss. This will be our regular stop from now on. Thoroughly recommended.

We had breakfast at the bistro very quiet it was a rainy Sunday. Very friendly warm welcome. The breakfast was good our only criticism was the bacon could have been crispier. Sausage sandwich with red onion marmalade was tasty. Fair price for a fair breakfast. Lovely barn setting.

I recently visited The Froginwell for an early lunch with a friend; neither of us had been before & so we weren't sure what to expect. I thought the sign outside saying 'come inside for a warm welcome' was a nice touch. Inside the barn is pretty cavernous with part of it given over to tables & part of it to the shop. All the lovely wood, the attractive decoration, the bits & pieces on display & for sale & the huge log burner all help to draw the rather large space together. As for the food, it was first class, we both chose the cooked breakfast and the quality of the ingredients was obvious & everything we had was delicious. Everything is sourced locally which is a big plus. I also had a berry tea, it was loose leaf & served in a lovely teapot & china cup which was a really nice touch. I would have given the whold experience 5 stars (the food certainly was) had it not been for the fact we were a little lost as to whether to take a table or wait to be seated when we first arrived & despite there being a waitress behind the counter we had to ask (would have been nice to be greeted & advised what to do). Judging by other reviews maybe this was a one off. Also at the corner table we chose we couldn't see the specials board & didn't realise it was there until we were leaving :( Maybe an idea to ask customers if they've seen the specials board before they order? That said our waitress was very polite & I will definitely visit again.

My partner and I went to Devon on business this week 9/10 and decided to try the Froginwell vineyard after checking out trip advisor. Whilst driving to the vineyard we got lost so arrived just before 4pm, they had started to clean up and close down for the day so we didn’t know if we should go in or not. We are both really glad we did, we had a warm welcome and the team offered us sandwiches, cake and coffee without hesitation, we want a little more as we had a long day so declined, but it was really nice they cared. The manager explained the cider to us and gave us a sample to try which we purchased because it was amazing, the shop is spotless and all the jams and gifts well presented, I hope next time we will be able to eat. Well done x

I have been to Froginwell several times at different times as well and every time has been a good time. I have just heard that they have just won the Radio Devon award for the best cream tea in Devon - a worthy winner and congratulations to all. The friendly, helpful approach all add up to a good experience in a setting that is just gorgeous.

Called in here late on Saturday afternoon with a few friends and although the place was on the brink of closing the staff greated us with genuine warmth & pulled out the stops to provide a superb cream-tea and afterwards the owner's husband, a rustic & friendly Devonian fellow, gave us a tour of the vineyard! We finished by stocking up on the excellent cider they sell & will, I am sure, call in again when we're in Devon.

Fresh baked scones tasty breakfast mushrooms. Very pleasant. Feels a bit empty and impersonal somehow and a warmer welcome from staff would have been nice. We were left unattended for a while after arrival.

Found this place by accident after popping into the White Horse and arriving too late for lunch. Sign outside says come in for a friendly welcome. It is indeed a genuinley friendly welcome from people who are obviously proud of their business. Had some lovely fresh loose leaf breakfast tea with two ciabattas. Good value and very tasty. Returned for a second visit the following week and it was nice to be remembered and the food once again was excellent.Third visit thought Id try the full meals and ordered a salmon tagliatelli and steak and Ale pie . Very good quality and once again friendly service. Have recommended to many friends and would recommend to anyone. Cant fault it and looking forward to trying their cider at the weekend.

Visited the Froginwell today, for the first time and was extremely impressed! The restaurant was very warm and welcoming, with a log burner fire going. We tried the Tiddly Toad cider and some wine, both very nice and also had lunch. Their signature chicken dish cooked with a white wine (their own wine) and cream sauce was absolutely delicious, as was the butternut squash and pecan risotto. We also sampled some lovely Victoria sponge and coffee cake, with a pot of tea - the tea was lovely, made with loose tea leaves. I cannot think of any negative comments at all....friendly staff, relaxed surroundings and excellent home-cooked food.....we will be back very soon!

This was a very special personal get together. Coffee is superb, and the cream teas are an absolute treasure, with the best, and largest scones that I have ever tasted. The cream teas have been a positive part of a news item on BBC Spotlight. In all honesty the outside of the building is not particularly interesting, but the inside is a treasure. How many places can you walk past a steam roller, indoors, on your way to the loo! It's adjacent to the main road, so you don't have to go out of your way to get there. Ignore the little flags on some internet maps, as it is immediately to the east of 'the White Horse Inn' car park. Well worth a stop for refreshments if you are travelling along the A3052

Popped in 4 a light snack and was pleasantly surprised on the size of the venue and its surroundings. Lovely place and very nice and friendly people. Nothing was too much trouble for them We had a lovely brunch and good coffee. Purchased a few of the products made on this vineyard including wines and ciders. Fab location for brunch and a simple but well structured menu for lunch and excellent cakes and flapjacks. Ideal place for a party as plenty of space. Caravans can park up here with electric hook ups. The vineyard is young but with a good summer plenty will be grown. Recommend a visit as it is really lovely.
