Francine's Newquay in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Price is ok, large portions, taste was ok. Apparently the best in Newquay but I wouldn't say in the country. Queues go out the door but we were served pretty quickly. Parking for free is available. 4 years later.

Great fish and chips, large portions served here, spicy curry sauce is the best I've had. Gravy is awesome too.

Went to Francine's during a weekend away on Cornwall. Fancied fishing chips and thankfully it was only a few mins drive from were we were staying. Be and my husband had fish and chips there are only 2 options. It was a very large portion what I would expect of large fish and chips. The fish was huge and good quality and the chips were perfect. We like fish and chips and this was up there with the best I've had and I don't say that lightly. If your in Newquay give it a go if its the same as we had you will not be disappointed

Unbelievable that people bang on about this place, yes they give loads of soggy chips but the fish was tiny.. This was supposed to be a large fish. Absolutely pathetic. Never again, Flounders all the way.

Always really fresh, massive portions, I don't go anywhere else in Newquay.

A fun local fish and chippy with lots of entertainment as the crowd happily chatted to each other. LOTS of chips. Order extra fish. Burger very good.

Don't believe the hype ,went there last week,chips were all scrappings,fish was large but ordinary, Flounders easily is better and the best in Newquay

Great tasting chips and very nice crispy fish. All cooked in beef dripping so not for the vegans or vegetarian. Fish came wrapped separately from the chips so it didn't go soggy like most chippies do. Very friendly service and very busy.

We are on holiday and was in a pub and someone came up to us and rated this chippy but sorry I will never get from there again I was very disappointed with the food the chips were disgusting had to throw them away not like other chippies where they are nice and soft they were all hard and hardly any potato in them

Wow!!! Had a visit to Newquay, Googled best fish n chips and this place came up, so walked the 10 minutes from the main town. It's definitely one of the best FnC places we've been too!! Fantastic fresh haddock in lovely crispy batter, an absolute mountain of fresh chips - even though I was assured its a "regular portion"!! One portion is easily enough for two people. Lovely gravy too. The woman who served us was good fun too, hope she enjoys her holiday at Sharm!!! Definitely recommend this place!

HUGE portions ! Almost too much, Couldn't even finish half a small fish and chips.

I must say, for a seaside chippy this was quite disappointing. Not only was the price very high, which I expect at a location like this, but the quality of food was quite poor. Portion size of chips was good, but the batter on the fish was dry and rubbery. Overall very disappointed and I’m not entirely sure why the queues are so long so often. Maybe we just dropped on a bad day.

Attended here for lunch for me and 3 of my children. The food was glorious and the portion sizes were huge. Prices were very reasonable too. A the person serving was lovely, polite and helpful. Would highly recommend and will defiantly be returning when we visit Cornwall again

I Have been coming to this chipshop now since 2018 and the cod has been Quality every time,But this year there has been a change in there fish.Weather it's to do with cheapcrap they buy for more profit in there pocket while summer holidays are here is a good Question!

Visit francines everytime we are in Newquay. Love how the food is cooked in beef dripping. The amount of chips you get is unreal. When I order chips from our local chippy 3 large chips is barely enough to feed us. 2 large chips is more than plenty. I would travel out my way to go to this chip shop!

Had food here several times always very good. Portions are massive compared to other chippys the small cod and chips is normal size.

Apparently the food was very tasty. However as a vegetarian I was unable to eat mine and had to throw it in the bin. I ordered a vegetarian choice from the menu. They didn't mention everything is cooked in beef dripping! I noticed a sign on the window but it was too late my order was almost ready. They should let you know when ordering the food isn't suitable for vegetarians

Food was delicious and portion sizes were good. The number of people coming and ordering was testament to how popular it is, considering it's away from the main tourist locations.

We ordered online and picked our order which was a great process for us, but the food as just ok, nothing special I've had better and it's a little pricey

Having been here so many times and never ever had a bad word. Today was my most disappointing visit ever and I hope it's just a one off and not a sign of things to come. To be fair there is a sign warning about new potato season so maybe it's just that. But four portions of chips mostly inedible. Shame as chip shop for a family of six costs so much and is a rare treat. We also live in St Ives so it's a treat trek ! Wasn't worth that trek today. The fish was cooked well as ever but small than normal. The new pots for the curry sauce/mushy peas was welcoming more easily recycled. Sausage was fine. Spam fritter was okay but over salted today. Staff lovely as ever though and I hate to fault the place. Just hope it's a one off and my next review is more positive again!

Not suitable for vegetarians. Went here based on recent reviews and I’m sure the fish and chips are lovely but we left after finding out everything is cooked in beef fat. Not sure why they even have veggie burgers on the menu.

We are on a group holiday at Porth Beach. We went out to get fish and chip dinner for 6. The food was cooked fresh and massive portions. All the staff were very polite. The food was still hot when we got back to the apartment. Recommend.

Been past this place a few times and always ques outside so decided to try tonight, shared large cod, large chips and mushy peas for the two of us and a jumbo sausage for the dogs less than £20, was huge portions, lovely cod in batter and delicious would definitely recommend and go again

Took 30 mins to get a singular bag of chips after ordering. Prices have sharply rose and the service and quality have greatly diminished.

Probably the best fish and chips I've had. Food was brilliant The wait was 10 minutes as it was fairly busy but for how many people were flooding out the shop I thought it was very quick.

Fish was pretty good , spicy curry was nice, mushy peas were tasty, chips not so good. Had a brain freeze and forgot I’m not a fan of beef dripping being used in a chippy.

Haddock and chips, batter a bit flat, but very tasty, chips perfect. Good single portion size, enough to share between X3 ageing oldies! With enough chips left over for supper or seagulls!

Really, really enjoyed my cod & chips. Lovely batter, didn’t get soggy or greasy. Fish was so tasty and the chips spot on. Will happily eat there again.

Chips portions are huge, but bit soggy, ordered large cod, looks like medium less, we couldn't taste the beef dripping in either the fish or the chips batter, we had better fish and chips in Cornwall.

Too greasy for my taste, fish is beautifully cooked and you get a huge bit of fish, but the batter just isn’t to my taste, and the chips are overcooked and chewy, I think I had a handful of edible chips, the rest were just overcooked bits that went in the bin, maybe I got a bit unlucky on the day. Not for me though, but saw it was popular so thought I’d give it a try. Great service though and quick.

Still good but slipping towards the lesser newquay chippies with decreasing fish size and seemingly older/dryer chips. The locals have gone there for years for good reason, don't lose your USP !

How could the price be twice what it was when I went there 2 years ago. The quality is very good but they give you too many chips.

Prompt, friendly service. Great sized portions. Only downside was they got the order slightly wrong, (only 1 jumbo sausage instead of 2 so dogs went hungry...lol) which we didnt realise till we got back to our caravan site 15 mins away. Didnt detract from the meal though

Absolutely delicious cod and chips. Some of the best I have had and a real treat after eating awful pub and restaurant food in Newquay for a week. Service was brisk, efficient and cheerful with customers queuing and waiting outside - our wait was only brief. Took food back to apartment and enjoyed immensely.

Good quality chippy that has good portion sizes. Open until 9pm most nights and can get busy. It’s away from the main touristy part of Newquay so it caters more towards the locals but can’t say it’s really any cheaper than the ones on the main beach fronts of Newquay. But then again these prices seem to be the going rate for fish and chips at seasides these days. Not many chippy are open as late as this one so if u want a chippy that’s open abit later this is the one.

After reading other reviews we thought we'd give Francine's a try, although we were a little trepidacious about the beef dripping. I have to say the service was quick, the youngsters serving are polite and courteous. But, and it's a big one, although I understand this is personal taste. Beef dripping is for roast potatoes not for fish and chips :( The taste becomes overwhelming and the level of grease is unpleasant. Some reviews have mentioned price but to be honest it's about right comparatively with today's cost of living, and they all clearly work hard and deserve a decent living. Tempura is definitely my thing and I shan't stray again but I can't say it's not a popular place because the queue says different.

It's a chippy, not much in the way of atmosphere. Fish beautifully cooked but everything is fried in beef fat. Initially the flavour is good but then the fat starts to coat your mouth and it's not very pleasant texture. Generous portions and friendly staff.

Extremely expensive at almost £50 for fish & chips x4, yet the portions were ridiculously large. I can eat seriously large portions but couldn't finish this, so it grates paying so much and then our family having to bin all that food. Reduce the portion sizes and charge less. The fish and chips weren't that good either.

Order ahead on busy evenings. Excellent chips. Fish was excellent. Batter slightly soggy after travel but crisp out the fryer. Not the chippy’s fault. Delicious. Haddock is my favourite and their’s didn’t disappoint.

Have been going here for over 10 years, when we visit Cornwall, but last Friday on arrival, had a 30 minute wait at 18.30 in the evening, and was very disappointed, sausage and chips, sausage not battered or the option given, and the cod was saturated in oil when trying to eat it. Quite a poor show

Bet you can’t eat it all if you order regular fish and chips.
