On Saturday lunchtime (20th Jan) my wife and I went for our first meal experience at the Foxlowe, and to call it unpleasant is putting it very mildly. We ordered tea for two, a bacon sandwich with fried egg for my wife and a 'full English' oatcake for me -- the vegetarian version because otherwise I wouldn't get any mushrooms, apparently. I hope you don't understand that restriction any more than I did. We were asked for payment in advance, received our tea, and waited for the food. We waited for 40 minutes, and eventually persuaded a waitress to chase up our order. She told us that the kitchen had never received it; apparently the cafe's system is all WiFi, and occasionally the connection drops out. Occasionally! I've seen similar accounts of bad service at the Foxlowe here on TripAdvisor, going back as far as 2018, so they've been aware of this glitch for years. That's disgraceful. Anyway, our food was then quickly prepared and served, and while my wife's bacon sandwich was "all right" (her term), the oatcake was pathetic: lukewarm and lost in the middle of a cold plate, covering a smear of melted cheese and chopped mushrooms, topped with two very nasty little quorn 'sausages' and what seemed to be part of an Aldi mixed-salad bag. What in the name of sanity is 'full English' about that? The waitress clearly sensed our displeasure, we left no tip and we left. The Foxlowe cafe management don't appear to care how shabbily their customers are treated, because as a venue for cultural events it will always have new (and unwary) footfall, right? Their presumed attitude is cynical and appalling. Do yourself a favour when in Leek, and STAY AWAY.

Group of us met for lunch. Service was quicker and more efficient than I remembered. The food was very good. I noticed several in my group left the salad, which was actually lovely. Would suggest it was offered but not automatically served 'cos what a waste. We' d booked a table in the main room but it was occupied when we arrived so we sat in the smaller side room. It was cramped and I found the doggy smell quite unpleasant. I am all for dog friendly venues but that room is not airy enough to disperse the smell. Suppose the wet weather didn't help. Food and service would have got five stars.

Didn't stay for drinks or food. The very off putting sight of serving staff chewing her nails behind the counter just put me off. I don't care if staff are volunteers or not, they should all understand and carry out basic hygiene. The Foxlowe is a nice venue and we've had good food and service there over the years BUT I'm not prepared to put up with such amateurish unhygienic behaviour.

This is a charity run cafe and art gallery in a prime place at the top of the marketplace in Leek. The food is served by volunteers who work hard to get you served. The menu is cafe typical with homemade soups with bread rather than rolls. A bacon sandwich is really a main course with large portions pretty much the standard.

I've used the Foxlowe several times. I agree with the recent comment about the £10 limit on cards. Also maybe the staff could talk together somewhere that doesn't affect customers? I certainly didn't feel welcomed. Please try eating a sandwich that falls apart on a board, it doesn't work. Very messy. It's expensive now. I think I'll try the café next door.

Had lunch here as our number one choice was not open. Menu choice was tiny and very unimaginitive. Baked potato, soup, wraps. I had the veggie wrap which was okay. Hubby had the mushroom and tomato rarebit. He was really disappointed with it. Although he said it tasted okay it was basically a big sloppy mess on two pieces of cheap toasted bread with a bit of salad . It looked very unappealing and he only ate half of it. The chocolate brownie was quite nice but my espresso wasn't very good at all. It's such a pity as the cafe is quite large and has the potential ti be excellent. Sadly we will not be visiting again.

Myself and a group of friends (all with babies) go to the Foxlowe frequently and have tea and scones or a panini etc. This has always been good, the "light lunch" food - sandwiches, panini etc have always been tasty. However I came for lunch with my grandparents and we ordered "proper" food, myself and my grandad had Cajun chicken and rice and my Nanan had a jacket spud. The spud was stone cold and we had to ask for it to be changed. Neither me or grandad could eat the Cajun chicken and rice - it was just chicken, chopped toms and chilli flakes! There was nothing Cajun about it. We had our money back for one of the main meals, so it was rectified. I will return, but I will stick to the sandwiches and cakes!

We ordered two leek and potato soups. After a very long wait the food arrived. The soup smelled of burning and tasted completely burnt. The waitress apologised and confirmed with the chef that "he had turned his back" on it and it had burnt. She then offered us a replacement and agreed it would be done straight away, as we were now dangerously near to our time in the carpark. She then gave us our money back whilst we waited. All well and good one may think! At this point it became farcical. The soup arrived and it was completely cold. You could put your finger right in the middle without feeling heat!! The soup went back and was returned. This time it was barely warm! At this point we gave up and ate the bread (this was good). Obviously the microwave used the second and third time was faulty or the "chef" did not appreciate the thickness of the bowls. Either way, despite my husband being diabetic, we left in disgust and because of the time in the carpark. We have never encountered a restaurant that cannot rectify a mistake to a customer's satisfaction before. This is our second trip to Leek and it will be our last.I would like to say that the blonde waitress was polite and tried to be helpful. The dark-haired waitress at the counter glowered at us as if it was our fault. What a shame!

I don't even know where to begin with The Foxlowe, but being as I frequent the place at least once a week it should give you some indication on what I feel about this cafe. The atmosphere is relaxed, content and friendly. Think of all the best traits you find in a good coffee house, and take away the superficial conglomerate façade that comes with it, just honest people serving honest food. There are various different sized tables to sit at, as well as two adjoining leather sofa's. There isn't a particular pattern to the style of furniture, but it's quirky and fun - it steps past the conformity you would find in a normal restaurant lay-out, and brings out it's own character and charm. There is always local artwork on show around the cafe, some sculpture work, some just regular paintings in different medium, all of which is fantastic and interesting to look at.All of this and I haven't even mentioned the food, the Pièce de résistance. When you sit down, there is of course the staple menu available with what you would normally find available in a cafe, baguettes, sandwiches, local oatcakes, toast etc. All of which are wonderful. But it's the daily specials board that really keeps your appetite tingling;I've lost count of the different choices that I have been given over the past year or so, pork schnitzel, sweet potato curry, chicken bacon & Avocado salad, falafel and hummus wraps, home-made cottage pie etc etc the list goes on and on, taking into account every cultural endeavor you can imagine. And the best part? The thing that keeps you coming back? It's absolutely delicious. Far and between do you find somewhere as consistently fresh and exciting as the Foxlowe, an absolute gem at the heart of a market town. Give it a go, you won't regret it.

Yes, I really do love going to Foxlowe and with all those great things that have been written before about it I totally concur. The food is so 'different', delicious and amazing value. Salads are crispy fresh, and the vegetarian dishes legendary. I'm a carnivorous person, but their vegetable dishes are so inventive I can be swayed away from the meat. Another nice thing about Foxlowe is how friendly it is, with chat between tables if you feel like it. After perfect coffee and something special and sweet, it's a delight to wander round the exhibition upstairs which can vary as often as the menu. I hear there are evening events as well. All in all Foxlowe is such a happy experience and unusual it's well worth making the trip, and going again, and again, and again...

There is plenty of room between tables with good sturdy furniture and comfortable sofas if you prefer. The staff are lovely, really welcoming and helpful. One lady in particular who brought our drinks had a marvellous sense of humour. The tea was delicious, and the drink I chose, The Fox, was a wonderful concoction of coffee, chocolate and nut. Really yummy. The food was fresh, hot and plentiful, and the largest 'side salad' I have ever seen. The homemade cakes have to be tasted to be believed, I can recommend the chocolate fudge cake but my parents preferred the scones and jam.I honestly can't fault the Foxlowe, excellent food very reasonably priced, with a lovely atmosphere and some of the nicest staff you will ever meet.Children are very welcome and there was a very well behaved dog in there too.

Only just discovered this volunteer-run cafe at the Foxlowe Arts Centre just off the market place. The ambiance is relaxing and friendly and the shabby chic decor suits the old building well. The coffee and cakes are great value and I found it hard to drag myself away from the comfy sofa to step out again into the rain. A few days later a friend and I were luckier and had our Sunday morning coffee outside on the patio. This is such a refreshing alternative to the usual run-of-the mill coffee house particularly because the upstairs floor is an art gallery and we walked around an exhibition of vintage architectural drawings - absolutely gratis! If I didn't live a little too far away I could make this a regular drop-in. Apparently open 7 days a week from 10-4.

All volunteer staff are excellent and the atmosphere is welcoming.A super venture by the trust to establish a focal point for arts, crafts, film nights etc for the community. The menu caters really well for vegetarians but there is always a meat option too.Portions are generous and at a reasonable cost. Super choice of cakes all baked by volunteers on the premises.Had a problem with one manageress but it will not stop our small group meeting there regularly.

This is one of the finest buildings in Leek, situated across the road from the market square. The Foxlowe Trust has made the most of the best room in the house as a cafe and is trying to raise money to renovate other parts of the house. Food is available all day - breakfast, then lunch then tea. The cook is (very) professional but everyone else is a cheerful volunteer and this makes a good atmosphere. We arrived for lunch and admired the scones, flapjacks and cakes ready for tea. One of us had Staffordshire oatcakes, a must if you don't know them, stuffed with bacon and served with salad, one had a bacon and Brie baguette, one a chicken Hoi Sin, freshly and perfectly cooked, with fresh peppers and baby sweetcorn, still with bite in them. Could not fault anything. Portions were generous and prices low.

You could easily walk straight past this lovely cafe in favour of some other, smarter looking eateries nearby, but that would be a great mistake. The meals are lovely, with well balanced flavours, beautifully presented the vegetarian options being especially good. The homemade cakes and scones - well superb!!The service is friendly, helpful and efficient. The inside is quirky but warm and cosy with a variety of seating plans for people eating at a table or just having a drink sitting in comfort on a sofa. The prices are unbelievably low especially taking into consideration the standard of food served.

Visited at lunch time. Really busy, but service was quick and the staff were helpful and friendly. All the staff appeared to be volunteers. Tasty, fresh food in interesting surroundings.

Beautful building, great cafe with homemade food, often using locally sourced ingredients, plenty for vegetarians. Small art gallery upstairs, and 'heritage rooms' with some local history. Very pleasant to sit on the patio out the back in the sunshine.

Fabulous food, all freshly cooked, amazing oatcakes, breakfasts, omelettes and much more. Very reasonably priced, the only place I know where you can set a coffee under £2. Brilliant

We booked in on the tea for two. I called back a few days later to ask for my tea for two to be gluten free (I'm Ceoliac) The receptionist informed me that my meal would be an extra £5. I have never been charged extra for an allergy. Having a gluten intolerance is a disease, wonder if you're charged extra for a vegan option? I won't be visiting. I cancelled the tea. Warning to all other sufferers, go somewhere else.

Service was slow for the party we were with. My dessert arrived nearly 10 minutes after the first one for my table arrived. Food was a little disappointing.
