Fox & Hounds Riseley in Bedford

We were staying just outside the village, and were made extremely welcome from the second we arrived, Thai curry on special, was great servings were right sized, the locals were brilliant and friendly, our little dog was fussed over. Will use again, next time I'm in the area

Absolutely lovely food and service. We enjoyed the Summer cocktails and the boys loved the cask beers. Sunday lunch was fab, but they still carried a full a la carte, which was great for me as I'm not a fan of the Sunday roast. Lovely enclosed beer garden, great service (not always present in rural. country pubs). Jennie is a dedicated landlady host and they have regular quiz nights and a pool table. What's I to love!

For over 80 years I’ve been eating fish and chips. From restaurants to a visiting van but I’ve never tasted such a diabolical meal as the one you served today. The batter was like leather; it was not cooked; there was little fish and what there was, was not in my opinion cod! There was no cod flacks just a white tasteless mush! The chips were hard and cold. If this is the food under new ownership then it’s not for me! My family hate it if I make a fuss so I said nothing at the time, but it spoilt the day. Never again!

A delicious Christmas Dinner with friends. Positives: Ambience: a friendly and festive atmosphere. Restaurant furnishings: The Fox has been tastefully refurbished: cream shades combined with natural wood furniture to complement the history of the building. Table arrangements: Pleasing to see that the management have placed tables to ensure plenty of space around each table which creates a spacious and feeling of privacy combined with a sense of exclusivity. Pool / snooker table + Art Gallery area: Perfect area for those who like a game of pool/snooker in an area set aside from the restaurant. Also, this is more inclusive and should encourage younger residents of the North Bedfordshire area to visit The Fox. Excellent idea to create an art gallery on the adjacent wall displaying creative works from local artists. Bar/lounge area: Cosy and spacious area to relax before dining. Table décor: Tables tastefully decorated: contemporary with a hint of nostalgic Christmas/festive silver, golds, greens and red decorations. Food: Delicious Christmas / Festive Menu, examples below: Starter: Prawn Cocktail with brown bread accompaniment - plenty of prawns (chilled, which shows correct storage conditions for fish dishes) with salad garnish, perhaps slightly less prawn mayonnaise sauce would balance the proportions of this starter. Salmon parcels with salad and bread accompaniment - delicious salmon flavours. Mains: Turkey breast / stuffing rolls, roast potatoes and roast parsnips; vegetable trays for 2 people to share: selection of green beans, sliced carrots and broccoli. All served with gravy on hot plates. This hearty main dish tasted like the very best home-cooked food... a large portion too, with all food served piping hot, as it should be in the very best of restaurants. Perhaps, a consideration for management would be to offer the gravy as an option in a gravy boat on the table, to allow customers to pour the gravy according to their personal requirements. Vegetarian - delicious and flavoursome Nut Roast. Desserts: Classic Cheesecake with fruit/compote trimmings - superb end to the meal, and a generous portion, too! Management: hold on to your chef/kitchen staff - they truly know how to cook and deliver an excellent plate of food. :-) Waiting staff: Courteous and attentive at all times; keeping customers informed of when courses would be ready for serving and timely service of drinks orders. Pleasing to know that The Fox are employing and training local staff (such as Sharnbrook Upper pupils/students) to high hospitality standards and wearing a 'waiting uniform', as in previous years; this demonstrates a level of professionalism by the management and that they value their clientele. Christmas Cheer: during our meal, the diners and those who popped in to The Fox for a drink or game of pool were treated to local carol singers singing classic Christmas carols - the perfect surprise treat to accompany our Christmas evening. Overall, a wonderful Christmas occasion: delicious food and generous portions combined with a warm welcome. Would definitely recommend booking a meal here for that special occasion and after many years of mismanagement - we can now say: The Fox is back in business, so book now before the waiting list returns! Many thanks to the waiting, bar and kitchen staff for a wonderful evening; we'll return to taste your Spring/Summer menu!

Went in with friends who live in the village and who recommended it. Very appealing menu, so much to choose from. The six of us had a variety of mains from sea bass to macaroni cheese and all were well presented and hot. Couldn’t fault the food or service.

Booked to come here for my birthday dinner for 17 people; firstly I want to say THANK YOU to Emily and her team on making it such a great evening, from the table decorations to service and the food. - The table was beautifully laid and the attention to detail was great, the service was very professional and friendly, the food was spot on no complaints for any of the dinners with my group. I will admit I am a super control freak micro management, email crazy person. Emily dealt with my questions with no worries. I had such a great evening I went back for lunch a couple of days later and took my Dad who had flown in from Singapore. All in all will 100% be back, good location, food, service and plenty of parking. Thank you.

First visit ever. Varied menu with a good selection. £116 for four, starter and main and drinks. Pub was very quiet. Plenty of parking. Pleasant outside seating. Nice restaurant inside. Authentic pub feel inside. Service was polite. A few tweaks and it would be 5/5. Mussels had too many with broken shells which becomes difficult to separate. The sauce was very nice and the bread fresh and tasty. Chicken roulade with white wine and mushroom sauce had no sauce as described and was covered with gravy?? This really spoilt the dish. If we were not all eating together we would have returned it. The pork chop was delicious and the vegetables cooked to perfection. Lovely crunch. However, again covered in gravy. Chicken dish should not have had gravy at all and the pork dish needed the gravy in a container to the side to be added to taste. Steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare. The pub serves two Brewpoint beers on tap and two local Bedford beers also. Nice to see local beers. We would happily go back but I would ask that any dish with gravy has this kept separate to add as required.

Had a really pleasant experience on friday evening, attentive service. Lovely building and garden. Also it’s dog friendly which is always an added bonus. Offered dog treats as well. (Not me for lol!) The food was lovely and piping hot. As a vegetarian it’s always nice to see a wide range of options on the menu. Will be back! Shout if to the fox staff :)

First time visit this pub. Fantastic family run pub, very homely feel to it. Staff were warm and friendly. Service was quick and efficient, with nothing being too much trouble! They checked everything was good with the food, with little checks in between to ensure our drinks were replenished. My partner had the mixed roast which came with all the trimmings (plus extra cauliflower cheese!) and looked fantastic. I had the tuna & cucumber baguette which was full to the brim! Good selection of drinks, even fresh barista style coffee for the end of a meal drink! Plenty of ample parking too, and signs showing they are dog friendly, brilliant for a village and knowing we can stop in on our daily dog walks. Really looking forward to returning soon! Pub is under new ownership. The pub used to be buzzing but now almost empty. Had lunch there during the week. Although the food was good, the staff were unfriendly and really couldn’t be bothered. Went in there again today - one table in and went up to the bar to order. It was like a Royston Varsey schetch where we were told to order from a second bar further along to then be greeted by someone else who couldn’t be bothered. It’s not cheap in there and they will not last long with such appalling service!

"You can have a tab if you are sitting inside but not if you sit in the garden" Not a great introduction but as it was a hot, sunny day, we went to sit outside and paid as we went along. Beer was good but at £4.60 a pint, over priced. The burgers were good and came quite quickly, both with chips and salad. If they didn't trust us it wouldn't have been a problem to keep a close eye on us as we were the only people in the pub except for the staff.

This used to be our go to pub for Sunday roast however having taken my family there today we won’t be coming back until things improve. Roast dinner for 4 adults 2 x pork and 2 x beef Roast potatoes were brown to black and were soft like they had been microwaved with little to no taste. Gravy tasted like bistro gravy granules with no stock or flavour from the meet added. Gravy poured over your roast potatoes doesn’t hide the fact that they were burnt Vegetables had been boiled so much they tasted of nothing. Finally the beef and pork clearly had been over cooked and not seasoned at all . The table comment was this was like an old school dinner bland, no love and disappointing. When paying I informed the staff of the issue with the meal and just got a sheepish look but still had to pay the full amount. No management interest to resolve my comment. Finally on leaving the restaurant the staff behind the bar gave us us what I can only describe as a dirty look for daring to comment on their food. Disappointed that what was a great pub has now let their standards drop so much for what seems to be a focus on profit and not high quality food and service. As they say customers vote with their feet which was evident with the lack of people in the restaurant. Come on guys please get this sorted

Fancied a spot of lunch with some friends whilst in the area, menu was very accommodating to our needs, I went for the crispy chicken wings and some loaded fries and I was not disappointed, fantastic service from the moment we walked in to the moment we left, we felt very welcome and the pub had a nice warm atmosphere. We will defiantly be back.

Today we visited The Fox and Hounds Riseley for afternoon tea. What an amazing experience. For only £15.95 per person there was so much variety. Assorted sandwiches, bacon and cheese turn over, beef teriyaki salad and coronation chicken salad and a large selection of cakes. Well worth the money. The service was spectacular, we will definitely be back. Thank you everyone 😀

The pub is an old favourite, but seems that with every change of Tennant the food gets worse. The menu is extremely large which is a warning flag for freezer and microwave but for pub grub that can sometimes be made acceptable. Whilst the fish and chips were ok, the burger was dry, tastless, compressed like cardboard and inedible. I'd love to hope the food will improve, like some who are finding their feet, but this is an addition to another pub with the same menu and there's a fundamental problem with the formula. Its not cheap either. Other than that, there is a good selection of beer from Brewpoint and the service was good.

Having read the recent reviews we decided to give this place a try but to be honest I wish we had listened to the recent reviews and avoided the place! My first disappointment was that the online menu is different to the actual restaurant menu (this isn't mentioned anywhere on the website that the menus differ). We found one of the members of staff unwelcoming when we arrived but luckily her shift ended after she had taken our order so we had a polite lady with purple hair and a young girl serving us instead. The food was very underwhelming. The fish stew was bland and uninventive- I wouldn't recommend it, you could easily create it at home with a tin of tomatoes and seafood mix from a supermarket.The burger was okay. Nothing special but it didn't disappoint as much.It also appeared we weren't the only underwhelemed customers as the table next to us declared that 'the steak was the worst steak' he had ever had!It's a real shame that this place is no longer a sought after place to visit as it had such a brilliant reputation.

The price we paid certainly didn't match up to the quality we received.The pub itself seems to have had a makeover, and looks great, but the food and service don't seem to match the appearance.We are not sure if it was such a let down as it was Christmas time and a set party menu (and they were busy), and may give them the benefit of the doubt and try again under normal circumstances with the usual menu.Basic things we were disappointed with were:-Forgotten water / water glasses - kept having to remind waitress-Missing cutlery (e.g. soup spoon) -One forgotten / late meal-Disappointing sides with Christmas dinner (although the turkey itself was delicious)-Completely under-cooked apple "crumble" dessert and no replacement or alternative or refund offered. It was basically mushed up apple with a bit of mulled wine spice in it, with raw butter and flour crumbled on top. No cooking seemed to be involved - it was apparently a new "technique" the chef was using.This leaves a lot of room for improvement.I'm not sure if it has changed hands but it isn't the same as it used to be.

Thin unevenly cooked steak . Greasy deep fried mushroom . Had to send back 1st one as it was well done although requested medium steak . Starters bit rubbish . Expected big things and came out disappointed . Won’t come back can cook better food at home !

The Fox and Hounfs has long been a family go to for that special celebration but it no longerIt used to have a number of special features ( the chiller with the steak on display where you could select your own cut and see it being cooked on the griddle in the inglenook fire place) It’s been a while since we visited as previously stated it was reserved for special occasions as a visit was never cheap but tonight was a serious disappointment. The chiller and one inglenook grill were gone ! The staff whilst polite were lacking in any real enthusiasm or warmth of welcome. The choice of draft beer was limited and the Charles Wells pale ale was well below par as was the Guinness so reverted to the red wine ( Shiraz which was acceptable but about £3 a bottle over priced) When we were shown to the table had to wait over ten minutes for someone to come and take our order. Then at least 15 minutes for our starters to arrive during which time no one asked if we needed a drinks refresh ! We had to ask a waitress for the service. In fairness when the starters arrived the food could not be faulted the were delicious. But then an unacceptably long wait before the main course to arrive. We all ordered steak by the ounce but without the benefit of seeing it cut from the chiller had no idea if we got what we ordered and I personally felt when it arrived a bit short changed ! However the food was impossible to fault it was everything it should have been. After the main course was completed and perusal of the woefully poor desert menu the cheese board was the favoured option only to be informed that it was unavailable! So the bill was requested. After another long wait we decided to up sticks and pay at the bar as no one seemed to be interested in collecting payment at the table ! So unfortunately the Fox and Hounds is no longer an exceptional place to eat. It’s just a n other country pub that offers great food but mediocre beer and service that is definitely on the poor side of average but at a price that you expect to pay for a premium product. As a family we now need to find another venue to eat on our special occasions

Recently visited as part of a party of ten. It was some of the nicest pub food we've had lately, my suet pudding was lovely. My dad had the whole plaice and the children enjoyed their meals too. It is a huge improvement on the previous incarnation as I never really used to rate the food. The atmosphere feels much improved too.Our waitress was really lovely and great with the kids. She did her best for us on all fronts.If I had to have any negatives it would be that we were the first diners to arrive for lunch and it was absolutely freezing. The fire was not on nor the radiators! It warmed up after an hour but sitting in our coats wasn't great. Service was also slow, an hour until we got our food too.. but we were a large group.The food was so good we'll definitely be back, glad to put this pub on our list again!

Went for a family meal here on Saturday night 4th January have been years ago what was top class there’s been a few changes management etc and slight refurbishment however the food was still of a great great quality we all enjoyed our food & drinks it was a bit slow but there was nine of us.The only other issue was our side order was forgotten and was brought out at the end of the food with no option to refuse it by the waitress but still where great onion rings so on the whole 9 pleased diners who definitely would return one day considering the competition around these days thankyou fox&hounds great food & pub

We booked this for a family lunch, and only read the reviews afterwards, so were a bit concerned about what our lunch would be like. Luckily, we needn't have worried.
