Fox & Duck in Central Bedfordshire

NEVER AGAIN!! I telephoned the previous day to confirm that they were serving lunches on Monday, and received an affirmative reply. When we arrived with our guests from New Zealand ( 6 people in total) we found the dining area in total dis-array following a wedding party over the weekend., and no tables either set or arranged for dining. Furniture was swiftly rearranged for us and our drinks order taken. We then waited and waited for the drinks to arrive. Eventually they were served and our food orders taken, and this followed by a delay so long we were contemplating leaving the venue. It transpires that the landlord had not arranged for any kitchen staff as he did not anticipate they would be needed, and he was running the pub bar and the kitchen by himself. He had to make a phone call to get someone in to cook our lunch, which was eventually served in such a delayed manner that the first two persons had finished their meal while others were still waiting. The jacket potatoes were undercooked. A similar waiting and staggered serving was repeated in serving the sweet course, which is puzzling as it was basically only ice cream. NOT A PLACE TO VISIT TWICE.

A desire for a Sunday Lunch, at short notice, prompted us to book a table for two at our local Pub. The Fox & Duck had been highly recommended by a fellow Allotmenteer and I was really looking forward to discovering a local eatery. Suprised how empty the venue was, with few people at the bar or in the restaurant, I think the economy is hitting hard. We were walked through the pub, passed the pool table to a Marquee, in which we sat (heated) watching the gorgeous autumn colours on the trees within view. The food arrived in good time and was clearly home made and hearty, just what we needed. Delicious 'Lamb Shank' falling off the bone with crispy roast potatoes and a mint gravy that was absolutely beautiful.. A really well put together dish, so good that I could forgive the over-cooked broccoli and cauliflower. Gary and his staff couldn't be more caring about what they do. Thanks very much.

We went for the menu and it didn’t disappoint. Garlic pizza bread and fried chicken were amazing. Very friendly service. We’d be back if we were local.

We had a Sunday roast here today. Lovely food, lovely staff, you couldn't wish for more really. Nice cozy restaurant. The meals came out in good time, were delicious and at a good price too. Highly recommend it and we will certainly be back for more.

Amazing food, as a family we struggle to find where we can all be suited but this is the place to go. Our son absolutely loved his meal( it’s a first )!. Honestly restaurant quality food, steak cooked perfect, and my fox and duck chicken was unreal!. Lovely setting to eat inside or out. The staff are what make this work also, all so helpful and friendly. Will definitely be visiting again very soon

This pub does not ever fail to amaze me with the quality of food they produce. It’s that good this was my 2nd visit in 4 days for food for my family. A string favourite of mine is the former burger which at under £8 is an absolute bargain in my eyes with the staff taking every little piece of information and feeding it through to the kitchen. The owner is an absolute diamond of a bloke and nothing is too much trouble for his customers. This place is a hidden gem and a must for people to visit

We were booked into The Crown but looking at their Sunday menu realised that their wasn’t much choice on their Sunday menu & it seemed to be over-priced. We called the Fox & Duck and asked to book for 9 with 45 minutes notice, the landlord warned us that their was a group in watching football & on arrival he had set up a table away from the noise but with a projector showing the football for our boys. From start to finish the landlord was so friendly & accommodating & couldn’t do enough for us. The food choice was extensive & the food was amazing. All 9 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals, the loaded chips were the best I’ve tasted. They even boxed up our few slices of left over pizza to take away. The deserts were home made & were delicious! I’d really recommend this pub, it is such good value for money.

This is a lovely little pub. Welcoming, friendly staff, good food at decent prices and huge beer garden that also offers weekend entertainment for both adults and children (live sports, bouncy castles, etc). I’d definitely go back if I’m ever in the area again and would therefore highly recommend.

Went here in week with friends for drinks. Great selection of Gins. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Was impressed by bar staff making us aware of Covid rules on arrival and these were followed. Nice relaxing catch up - will be back to eat as well next time.

Had a great first night out at the fox and duck since the lockdown. We had a pizza each and it was very fresh and tasty. Service was brilliant unfortunately i don’t know the name of the lady who served us as I would of gave her a mention. Had a great night and will be back very soon

I visited tonight as in the past it was a really upmarket bar and restaurant but things have definately changed. The menu was basic pub group and noticing mould on the tomato in my salad completely put me off my meal. I pointed it out but the chef said he didn't know why and that was that. Shocking food and service.

Visited here recently with friends and sat in the beer garden. The pub is a great space and have a fantastic menu, and the food we had (combinations of small plates) was really tasty. Lots of layers on tap bit very limited selection of ales. While the staff are all very friendly and I appreciate the pub was quiet when we visited, I was disappointed to see that the person serving us wasn't wearing a mask and those that were weren't wearing them properly.

Every time without fail, the Fox and Duck pizza is absolutely perfect. Amazing value for money. Staff are polite and friendly. And now an added bonus they do 2 pint take outs. 😍😄

Unfortunately we are in lockdown due to COVID-19 we were not able to visit in person but we were able to order a take away. The pizza was delicious and the the gentleman ( maybe the owner ) we ordered from and who delivered was very polite and humorous! We will definitely order from her again!

Visited for lunch on a Friday lunch time after moving on from Crown at Henlow as choices were not simple enough for my mum. Not impressed with choice but quality of food better than expected. Sad to see such a great location resorted to a ‘sport’ pub, all restaurant tables gone, replaced by pool table. This establishment with new owner has had so many different menus. Seems now just for work men / sport enthusiasts and no restaurant tables any more.

I threw my partner and my daughter a joint birthday party here back in August 2019. The food was really good, and good value for money. We really enjoyed the DJ too! It was a shame that loads of people RSVP'd yes and then didn't turn up, but we still enjoyed ourselves! So much so that we are coming back here for our engagement party in May! Excited!

Just had another Sunday lunch af the Fix and Duck. A most wonderful roast beef and lamb shank. Not to be missed, highly recommended. A special note to Chtissy who cooked the perfect lunch

I will start with the positives. We booked a table and arrived with two kids and a party of 6 welcomed as soon as we arrived seated quickly and drinks arrived shortly after. Sadly after this things went down hill, service was slow and I mean very slow waited nearly an hour for our mains with no explanation of delay and the restaurant really wasn’t busy. When the food arrived it was a disappointment we had to ask for the salad and coleslaw that was meant to accompany our burgers but this also meant the burgers themselves were plain. That being said portion size was good but would advise management to try the marinade they use on the Cajun burger as it’s incredibly salty. Pizza was greasy and soggy the chips tasted of stale fryer oil. The best bits were the kids fish and chips and the garlic bread couldn’t fault either. Kids wanted pudding just being ice cream we assumed it wouldn’t take forever sadly we were wrong, if it had been busy we would have understood but it really wasn’t. Finally ice cream arrived in two stages to two very tired kids and we asked for the bill again it seemed to take ages. We left disappointed really we had hoped for a nice evening meal and to support a local pub but sadly don’t feel we will be back as the negatives just out weighed the positives.

Trish and I made our annual visit to her parents graves and met up with a friend. We all agreed that we would, as usual, go to the Fox and Duck, as it has been so good in the past. What a disappointment this time. Gary was not in attendance and the two ladies were friendly, but overworked. The menu had changed to standard pub grub and, by our experience today, of indifferent quality. This on top of it taking ages to arrive. We had so looked forward to the usual semi- gourmet food, so we're hugely disappointed. Maybe pub grub is what sells in the area. If it does, it need to be a cut above the rest. Sorry, Gary, but we won't be calling again. Even the good atmosphere has gone.

We have been a few times now and every time we have been greeted with friendly faces and good service. The last time we decided to have a lunchtime meal, both meals were very tasty, and well presented and were very good value.Menu has something to suit everyone. We can recommend this pub/restaurant, so much so we will be visiting there again very soon. As a matter of interest they now do B&B; and also an all day breakfast.

We really like this place. The food and service are both good. Gary is,a good host and makes you feel welcome. We have been there a few times and I would recommend it happily.

I've now had both a Sunday lunch and their breakfast. Both have been outstandingly tasty. I've now met all the staff who work different shifts and they are all very welcoming and friendly. Highly recommended whether for just a drink or a meal. Well done all.

The service at this establishment is the worst I have ever experienced, therefore Gary does deserve 5 Stars.I love the come-backs that the owner gives to anyone who dares to criticize the service here. It is so incompetent that it does deserve 5 Stars for the owners inability to understand how to run a business. Give him £1,000's every year in your hard earned money, only to have your faith in customer experience dashed at every eventuality. I wish this incompetent owner well on his discovery of how to ruin a business, I feel sorry for the really great staff that have to put up with having to deal daily with complaints from customers, the awful food and slightly out of date beer. Readers of this review, please prepare yourself for the barrage of poor grammar, misspelling and general abuse that my honest review will receive from the owner . Please do take out your own insurance for the bouncy castles if you let your kids "bounce"!!!!

Was very upset with how long I waited at the bar before was served

Very warm and friendly establishment. The Manager Gary is welcoming and is always happy to help. The staff are lead well from Gary. There are live bands that play here on a regular basis alone with live sports on the telly's. The beer garden is superb with a great kids play area ... And at the moment there is a bouncy castle and a huge bouncy slide ... Geared towards kids but I'm sure a few adults have had a go!

We attended a family Christening here on the 30th June 2019 and the buffet was by far the best we have had anywhere. The marquee was basic as that was the way my daughter wanted it but had its own bar and there was water to help yourself to as it was an extremely hot day. There was inflatables for the children and a play field. Not one child said they were bored and all the adults were happy with surroundings and food. The Sunday lunch looked lovely and as we visit our daughter regularly with our parents we will book rooms to stay there next time - hadn't thought of it in the past and always used the traditional Travelodge or Premier Inn. Bar staff were lovely with us and Gary the owner was attentive. I will update my review when we stay and eat but for now had no complaints whatsoever.

Very welcoming pub great service from all the bar staff greeted with a friendly smile. Food was amazing to compliments to the chef.

Came into the fox and duck for a £2.50 got chocolate and the barman was so friendly! The mug couldn’t have been cleaner and we received a lovely goodbye on the way out. We will be returning to the fox and duck our favourite family pub in stotfold.

Went in to have some lunch, decided against it as the menus were dirty and sticky. Asked for two hot drinks to be polite as we felt bad about walking straight back out, we greatly annoyed the barman by changing our minds from having alcoholic drinks to said hot drinks! Let us wait at the bar instead of offering to bring the hot drinks to our table by the barman, who must have been having a very bad day given his attitude. Hot chocolate was served in a dirty mug, left without finishing, walked past the poor barman as we walked out, no interest or curiosity in how our drinks were and not surprisingly no friendly goodbye either!

Went for a family birthday good food, friendly staff, garden with bouncy castle,park area for the children great place to celebrate good day had by all.

Unfortunately the service was slow, Meat was over cooked, wife’s meat was cold, vegetables undercooked.

Popped for BOGOF pizza night and interested as they have a new chef, great pizzas and kids loved their meals sausage and mash and a burger. Looking forward to my next visit.

Was brought here for an unexpected birthday meal although it would appear the Wife had made arrangements before our arrival!!

Came here for an evening meal with my mum and dad, our dog was allowed in the premises which we were very glad about after being refused from 2 other local pubs. The staff were very nice and all the meals were delicous and sized very generously for the price. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed the meals and agree the pub has a very bright and sucessful future.

We was at the pub one evening when we sat and watched the chef collect drugs from a vehicle in the car park more than once!! There is so much drug activity at this place I wouldn’t want to take my kids there. Also the chef looked like he had been dragged through a bush backwards no chef whites on at all, the service in the pub was absolutely shocking as well.

Came here on Friday as the kids menu was very reasonable...... A main and 2 sides for £5.50.

Wow what amazing food we had ordered the steak of the menu and it was delicious the best steak I've probley had. It was cooked well and exactly how we liked it. I even got to meet the chef myself what a lovely polite man he was. Very polite members of staff and kept it flowing well considering they was short staffed. Will defo return again thank you.

There was a power cut at Baldock services so searched for the nearest place to eat. What a lovely pub, really welcoming, comfortable and excellent food. We will definitely visit again in a couple weeks. Thank you Gary and the team.

My husband and I had breakfast here on one of our days off. We arrived just after 9am and it was very quiet. In fact, we were the only ones there. I guess mid week breakfast isn’t the most popular time.

This place has quite recently changed hands in the last year. They have just started doing breakfasts from 8 am till 10.30. The first thing I ordered was a cup of tea which was nice.As they have only just started a breakfast venture a pot of tea wasn't available but we got a really nice cup of tea. Reassured I then went on to order a mug of tea with the food. The place is clean, the tables well spaced out and and chairs comfortable and clean. The menu was good and fairly priced. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The food was cooked well and was hot. We had quite a leisurely breakfast in the quieter end at the dining area because there is a television in the bar where incidentally they have an ice cream serving suite! They have good children menu options and out door play area and so it does seem to cater for the whole family. The bar itself seems to be very well stocked for the adults and does have a sort of a holiday feel so maybe a one for family on summer days out. I think it could be very good for Bedfordshire walking groups. or people travelling down the A1 and looking for a nice rest stop. I intend to return for a test of the lunch menu. Watch this space then.

We came here for an evening meal on our way back from Bedford and tried there meal deal two main meals for £25 which included a bottle of wine. I had the Fish & Chips my wife had the Scampi, and i must say what good value it is, very generous portions, the Red wine was very drinkable. Overall extremely good value for money. We shall return

We booked for early evening on Saturday. When we arrived it took a while to get a member of staff to realise we were there and waiting to be seated, but once we'd flagged someone down, the service was very attentive and friendly from all the staff we spoke to.

A delicious meal in a lovely setting. The waitress checked with the chef what I could eat off the menu (coeliac and other intolerances) which was quite a few things. The food was well presented and good sized portions.

We came here with out ravenous daughter who’d been on a 3 hour train journey to spend the weekend with us from uni.

I was visiting friends nearby and we popped into the Fox and Duck where we were greeted by a very friendly bar lady. We wanted to eat and were taken to the dining area and served by a very helpful waitress. I ordered the pan fried duck with dauphinoise potatoes and honey glazed carrots which was scrumptious. My friends had the lamb rump with minted mash which too was delicious. Big portions for the not so hungry but perfect for a chilly evening. Compliments to the staff and chef for a great experience.

Simply lovely food, friendly staff and an easy atmosphere. We had a lovely afternoon to celebrate a friends birthday.

Me and my partner bought my little one here in September as we knew it has a bouncy castle to keep her busy!!. She loves the garden as has a climbing frame with swings and slide. The food was great thanks to the head chef James!. The staff were very attentive and overall a great place. Great food and definately a great family friendly pub! Will definately be returning and my little one loved the ice cream thanks Gary!!.

I visited this pub with my partner and 2 children, we had such a stress free lunch as there was enough things there for the children such as a play ground with swings and sides and a bouncy castle not To mention the various different ice lollies and ice cream they had on offer. The food was also very nice and I will definitely be making a trip back very soon!

After a day walking around Duxford we needed something substantial, My son had booked and none of us had been here before.

We visited the Fox and Duck for the first time last night for a weekday meal. Food was lovely especially the mushroom and cheese starter! The chicken brie and bacon burger was really nice and the chips are proper homemade chips. The service was lovely too. Will definitely be returning

We were here for a funeral wake. The staff were polite and the service was good. The food that was served was very good and just kept coming. Small play area for the children.

Travelling home from Stansted Airport last Sunday afternoon we were passing Stotfold needed a meal and after consulting Trip Advisor found the Foxand Duck.

we went there recently on a Tuesday with 7 people It was too full ,very nice place I am local i know it has changed hands a lot in the last 5 years, We all ordered our meals

Gary helped us to decide on food for the wake which would suit everyone and keep costs down for us. We selected hot food and ordered 12 different pizzas to suit a variety of tastes. We had tea and coffee free flowing all afternoon and were given a space in the dining room to call our own. Great staff, lovely venue and very nice food.

We popped down to The Fox and Duck for a girls night out a few weeks back. My friends and I sat in the garden and had a pizza and burgers. Food was delicious and really reasonably priced for the quality. We also had cocktails, which were also lovely. Really nice atmosphere and staff very friendly and accommodating. Nice to have a family pub that’s is so welcoming and versatile on our door step. Thanks for a great night, will definitely be visiting more often.

Great pizza and amazing cocktails ask for sea breeze. Very accommodating had my favourite banana and pineapple pizza, just have to ask and the staff do all they can to give you what you want.😁👍

Absolutely AMAZING fish & chips meal they do there... really nicely cooked chips, done just right and the fish was battered too perfection. Not too dry, not too greasy, just right. They've got a great chef there and friendly staff - go visit today :-)

I want to say a huge thank you to Gary and his team of staff. I booked The Fox & Duck for my husbands 40th Birthday Party and we were really impressed with the process from start to finish. Gary was so flexible and easy going which made sure there was no added stress to the organisations. We had nearly 100 people (including children) and the day went by without any issues. Gary and his staff were very accommodating and kept checking we were happy with everything. The food was great, the drinks kept flowing and the iceceams and bouncy castle were a hit with the kids.

Always great food, always friendly staff, great play area for the kids, great selection of drinks, plenty of parking. All round great restaraunt and pub. Highly recommend!...they do a great soul night too!!

We've eaten here many times, mainly because the location is convenient and there is a play area for the children. The food is always just ok (not so bad that you wouldn't go back but not good enough that you would recommend it either).

The landlord clearly doesn’t care about locals and potential customers. The Facebook page shows an extremely unprofessional post regarding some disturbances in the area which were caused at this pub. Keeping thousands of people up at night for the sake of a party for 25 people is not acceptable and using a very sick boy as an excuse to do so is absolutely atrocious. Will be telling all my friends to avoid too. There’s plenty of friendly places in the area to visit instead.

So we visited this establishment for a birthday party for myself and 11 guests, food was pre ordered so you think it would have come out quicker. Food arrived in dribs and drabs and the child’s meal came out after I had finished my steak meal. Condiments that we had asked for at the beginning of the meal arrived after most people had finished.

Used to be lovely with the old landlady, but new management have turned this from a lovely gastro pub to somewhere resembling a Wetherspoons, but with overly inflated / much higher prices!

What a treat it was! Delicious food the roast lamb was succulent and the sticky toffee pudding a delight. Great afternoon great atmosphere and very chilled wine just like the guests! 😋

So disappointing on website said there were plenty of gluten free options in reality no starters and only 2 mains offered, forgot to tell us the kitchen had closed before we ordered our desert. No real atmosphere food not bad but nothing special the wine was good and strawberry gin but won’t be hurrying back felt we were a bit of a bother to the staff.

If you look at my review of the fox and duck three years ago, I said it was the best Sunday roast I'd ever had out. Today, not so, nowhere near.

After a few beers we had pizza and burgers, best in the area. Can’t wait to go back again. Well done to the new chef.

I'm always on the look out for a pub lunch that offers something a bit out of the ordinary - too often menus play safe with old favourites and there's nothing to tantalise the tastebuds.

Have been here before and really liked the vibe and the food but it must have changed hands recently. Food choice seemed VERY limited. Went on a Friday and it’s basically burger or pizza! They had a bouncy castle which is great on a sunny evening if you have kids but I really just wanted a decent meal ( I can get a pizza from dominos and a burger from macdonalds )

My friend, her 6 year old daughter and myself visited Thursday afternoon as an after school treat, knowing that they had the bouncy castle up in the garden. The visit started off great with music playing in the garden and friendly efficient service from the bar. We found out that we could only order food from 6pm, which is fine but in my opinion a poor decision as then when 6pm came we waited at the bar for 20minutes to order our food. Once we ordered we were kept waiting at the bar for a further 10 minutes before we were allowed to pay. There was a lot of confusion and it was very unorganised. Our food then took a further 30 minutes to arrive, luckily the food was to a good standard and we could not fault it. Great pizzas! This could of saved the entire experience but as a final treat we decided or order some ice cream. The lady who served us actually sighed at us! Her service was so incredibly rude it really made us leave on a low note.

A fresh modern venue with really lovely staff. I would love to be able to comment on the food only we never got any! We placed our order waited 45 minutes and enquired about our food to be told it hadn’t been placed - we were given a refund and left. Probably an unlucky day for us.

A large group of us visited for a light lunch. The weather was good enough to use the beer garden. It is nicely set out for adults and families and had a relaxed at mosphere . There is loads of room for small children to play on the play equipment or ball games in the field . I shared a veggie platter and polenta chips . All of it was delicious . This pub should have a great summer season if they concentrate on reasonably priced fresh food rather than al la carte restaurant . The ciabatta rolls and the handmade chips also looked lovely .

Visited the restaurant on a Friday evening, pre booked a table for 8 but was accomodated when needed to add another dinner at the last minute. Pleasent staff and surroundings, restaurant not particularly busy. Friendly waitress who promptly took our drinks and meal orders. Starters...

I was pleasantly surprised - this was a weekday lunchtime meal and the food was superb. Calves liver with onion gravy and mash. The liver wasn’t in the slightest bit dry, it melted in my mouth, the gravy tasted like a top chef had been simmering it for hours, it was fruity, rich and meaty all at once. The mash was smooth and well seasoned. I’m so looking forward to going again. Top marks to the chef. Well done Fox and Duck

We visited for lunch on Saturday & were very impressed. We live locally so do visit fairly often (more often in the summer) & have always been impressed on our previous visits.

We were regular visitors to the fox and Duck last year and couldn't rate it enough unfortunately they returned this month and was very disappointed not only did we have to wait quite a long time for food bearing in mind and was only one other couple in the restaurant at lunchtime the quality of food and the size of the portions Has Fallen dramatically and so expensive unfortunately I don't think we'll be returning which is a shame the waiting staff very good no fault with them

We used to visit the Fox & Duck a few years ago and always had a good time, but never ate inside as I think they had a barbecue on

We had seen some great reviews of the Fox and Duck decided to give it a go. Overall a very lovely meal. There was a mixup with our order which resulted in a delay in the starters coming out very late but when it arrive it was delicious and well worth the wait! Great starter, great main course and amazing cheesecake for dessert. The way in which the waitress and the owner made up for the mixup made he difference and we will definitely be back!
