Highly recommend this traditional family run pub. The Landlady is the hardest working person I have ever met and always with a smile on her face. She made us so welcome as did the locals. Lots of locals (good sign) and excellent menu. Not too fussy - just good traditional pub food. I had the sausages & mash with onion gravy with freshly cooked vegetables. Great desserts. We stayed overnight on a Devon Coast to Coast bike ride. My room in the main building was clean, fresh sheets and a bath!!! Essential on a bike riding trip! Views from the pub are stunning when the sun is shining. There is a caravan park out the back. There is cottage accommodation as well which is basic. I encourage you to visit and support them.

We camped at this busy and deservedly popular pub, and ate in the pub both nights, and were looked after by the loveliest of staff: really caring and friendly. The food was good hearty stuff, great after a day's walking: venison casserole, meat pies and the like, and a vegan curry. It was slightly a pity there weren't more vegan options, as my partner had to have a second version of the same dish on night 2, but the delightful and accommodating staff, the outdoorsy atmosphere and the overall charm of this place made up for that. I'd say the campsite, at busy times, could do with more showers and loos, but that's no reflection on this well-run and splendid pub. On the second morning we had breakfast there as well: very good indeed!

Great pub but campsite less so. During my 3 night stay, several Ten Tors/D of E groups turned up filling the field with tents, which is fine. But only 2 toilets and 1 shower for all the females, which were disgusting after a few minutes. I had parked on a pitch which I'd booked months ago and came back from a walk to find someone else parked on my pitch, despite my vehicle being there already. Only enough space to just open my door as they were that close. Whilst not the fault of the pub, they need to increase the toilet capacity if taking so many bookings, and ensure other visitors stick to the rules of the campsite. I would possibly stay again as the location is great, but be prepared for being overrun by groups and less than adequate facilities. The staff in the pub were great and it had a great outdoorsy atmosphere, drinks reasonably priced and the food really tasty, so no fault with the pub. Campsite really does needing looking at though. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g551648-d8408329-r941766966-Fox_and_Hounds-Lydford_Dartmoor_National_Park_Devon_England.html#

We were staying in a B&B locally but needed somewhere to eat on a Monday evening. We chose this pub and were not disappointed. The decor is very basic but the food was excellent. My husband had the prawn cocktail and I had the Pâté followed by meat pie for him and jacket potato for me. The portions were large, served hot and were very tasty. We each had a drink plus coffees and the total came to £51 which was very reasonable these days!

Called in for lunch last week and informed them I was a celiac and required a GF meal. There were 2 GF options. We ordered our meals and paid for them. After a short while the waitress appeared and asked how much flour I was allowed, to which I replied none so could not have the pepper sauce. She also said the chips were all cooked in the same oil, so not able to have them either. So I opted for the other GF option which was a curry. The curry arrive with a large poppadom on top which was covered in loose flour. I asked if the flour was gluten free, after they asked chief they said it was not! We won't be going there again. So Celiac's beware

We typically look forwards to a family BY day meal here every year. Irs a special day for our family In the past the landlord has greeted us and there has been an efficient, friendly and welcoming bustle which we loved, the food in the past was delicious. The waitress was friendly but wore her slippers and joggers. Whilst there an elderly gentleman abdchis wife came in, they both wore the equivalent of suits and clearly had visited foe an occasion . It made me feel sad that the staff did not see this. We sensed the staff were tired and I do appreciate that it was new-year day, but even the farmers and walkers looked tidy . It was a shame . Hubby had a ploughman's. It was not presented nicely and looked as though no thought or care had been put into the presentation of it. My penang curry was at best luke warm. My daughter had the mango sorbet. It was served in a sugar bowl!. My youngest daughters main meal was served in a soup bowl! At £100 we were very disappointed. It was a lax service and a very poor standard compared to the usual high one. I don't know if it was lack of leadership that day, but clearly no one checked the food as ur came out. I hope this was a one off bad day. This is usually a gem of a place. If we had not in the last had such a lovely experience, then based on today's shoddy show we would not return. We did bring these points to the attention of the bar lady on departure, we were super polite and she recieved our thoughts and views with kindness and good grace .

We stayed here for 2 nights. The accommodation is poor and in need of modernisation. Tiles in bathroom are black and in need of re grouting, windows are steamed up with condensation. Cold in the room and had to ask on both nights to have the heating on. There was no hair dryer and when asked for one I was told that this was an unusual request. Was expecting room to be replenished on 2nd day, no bed made or towels changed, used coffee cups still in room. Was told that it should have been done. Breakfast was lovely but the evening menu was disappointing.. Special board was the same on both nights. Such a shame as it is right on the Moors...

Landlord didn't warn us about the large 'protected minority' group in the camping field that started lighting fires, even though the top rule was no fires. Took our money and threw us to the wolves. When my 65 year old wife politely pointed this out, as everyone was getting kippered, she was beaten to a pulp by one of them. Police and ambulance were called, we had only been there a couple of hours. The staff were great but the hand wringing landlord was too frightened to do anything about the situation, didn't even offer our money back. No contrition shown by him when contacted later, just mealy mouthed platitudes. Won't be going again.

We visit the Fox regularly and feel it is the best pub in the area. It is tired but sparkling clean. They always have good attentive staff and the food is never disappointing. The prices have crept up slowly over the years but remain extremely affordable. Very good value. I certainly would not like to try and guess how much it costs to keep on top of this very old pubs maintenance as it banks onto Dartmoor and gets all the bad weather. £1000's per year I would think. It is always clean, tidy and meticulously run. My favourite every time.

I've been here many times before, and always found friendly staff, ample parking and great food. Visiting amid Covid requirements, however, I was thoroughly disappointed. It was mid-September so legal requirements weren't yet in place, but nobody was wearing masks, there was no data collected for tracing customers and it was still bar service. That is, we were encouraged to send people from our table, past the other tables, to order at the bar anytime we wanted food or drinks - something we weren't told when we were first seated. Seated by a rather dismissive and grumpy gentleman behind the bar, which was odd, considering we've always found it a really friendly place before. Signs were up regarding restrictions and some chairs taped off, but otherwise it seemed to be business as usual, which didn't feel particularly safe at all. When our food did arrive - there was a bit of a longer wait than seemed quite appropriate - it tasted as great as usual. Still, I might wait until things get back to normal before I return (and hope the bartender was just having a bad day!)

During our staycation to Devon we tried at a couple of local pubs for an evening meal but they were full. Luckily for us we found The Fox and Hounds. From the outside it’s not the most attractive of pubs and the interior needs modernising but this all adds to the quirkiness and charm of the venue. The host was very friendly and charming. I had the sea bass and my partner had the cottage pie. Both of our meals were very generous portions of hot and tasty food. We really enjoyed our evening and found it good value for money. Great crispy chips, loads of fresh well cooked veg, and great mains, I had the chicken special which was superb, people were also raving over the braised beef cheeks and on the second night (as I was staying in the hotel) I fancied the curry but I don't eat lamb, so the chef made me a chicken curry to my liking. This was my first visit to this pub and it will be my last. Went to a friends Christmas party sadly it soon became apparent they paid rather a lot per head over the top for food for everyone. The potions were poverty spec, the quality / cooking of this food was extremely poor. The trifle was out of a tin and runny the mince pies were the worst homemade pies l have seen out of a commercial kitchen. The beer was overpriced and the decor was shabby. Small amount of lettuce on a different part of the plate very strange. The main meal we asked for Beef roast . The meal came and was swimming in gravy with was about 1/4inch deep . The beef itself I was so disappointed as the beef was acquired locally. No taste very bland colour was greyish . Sent it back and even replacement was not very nice. The desert was apple pie with ice cream and cream and that was ok. To top it all of was not until I left They had charged for 2x 3 course meals and it was only 1x 3 course meal. We popped in on the off chance to this pub. We had driven past it the evening previously and noted that it served food all day and was family friendly. We arrived about 9.15am. The clientele were versatile from walkers, to a mature couple and then us as a family. What a cracking breakfast .... cooked feast, rack of toast, lovely pots of tea and coffee. And for our 12 year old daughter not to be left out was offered hot chocolate with thick fresh cream ... (yes for breakfast!)The landlord was really friendly, advised that the menu was a full menu all day - so none of the dreaded fear of trying to get a sandwich after 2.30pm as in some places. The entire menu looked superb, varied and reasonably priced. We we would have returned there for our evening meal had we not been travelling onwards in the other direction. This pub offered family accommodation and based upon my breakfast experience I would be more than happy to consider staying here next time I am in Dartmoor.

Delicious xOpen all day and fancied a Sunday roast....£9.50 which was okay but as I do not eat meat I did think it was expensive as it was just veg! I did question the price but I was told that what it is!!!Apart from that okay....

Called here after a walk on Dartmoor so both hungry and thirsty. The food was well cooked and presented and the staff were pleasant and friendly. The choice of drinks was good and dogs are welcome.A good place to stop after or before a moorland hike. Plenty of parking.

I had just completed a 15 mile hike across Dartmoor so was looking forward to a nice meal but decided to have a cold drink firs. A pint of lime cordial. Imagine my suprise when I was asked for £2.40Yes, really needless to say I decided not to stay for a meal.... Sir you do have the right to charge what you want but you must also accept that there are consequences for charging double what other establishments charge

First time visiting this restaurant after reading the lovely reviews. Expecting to have a lovely cooked breakfast in the restaurant to start our day only to be told restaurant not open due to no staff. Take away only Had 2 baps and 2 coffees £18 very disappointed the baps were small brioche buns. Won’t be returning..

We visited here whilst in the area for a few days unfortunately we found the White Hart Inn not until our last evening and we wished we found it on our first. The staff were very welcoming and friendly we felt most welcome it kind of made our trip being here. The food was superb and we could not believe the devon prices so reasonable sort it out cornwall! Easy double the price back home half the taste. Plenty of parking, dog friendly, will leave with change. We speak often of going back

this is a real local pub, no horse brasses and other superficial ornaments or plastic arts on the walls - it is a genuine old pub. Don't go there looking for a grockelised pretend country pub. it is genuine, plenty of genuine locals and passing ramblers. It is genuinely rustic. And lovely. Superb food, very reasonably priced . Excellent service. wonderful welcoming atmosphere. Thoroughly recommend And will return !
