Folly Lake Cafe in East Riding of Yorkshire

Delicious Breakfast! Met friends for coffee and a bite to eat and ended up staying for cake as well. Couldn't resist really! Perfect little setting for any time of day or weather. Bonus - the dog was made very welcome.

This place is a little gem! Quaint, lively setting and the staff are an absolute delight. Friendly service, accommodating for special requests too. The menu and food was great, very tasty lunch and the cakes as a treat were delightful. I’ll be back in a heart beat next time I’m visiting family in the area.

Okay so this is a lovely cafe with lovely surroundings, there's both inside and outside seating and outdoor seating is covered. The environment is lovely. The food itself is great and there are a lot of options. I do however, have a few issues. First one is the road in. I appreciate the fact its a fishing pond etc but the road is really uneaven and for lowered cars, its an absolute nightmare to drive down. In terms of food, the food itself is great but the portion sizes can be very limited. My main issue is the fact that with sandwiches I was given a tiny amount of coleslaw. Not even a spoon full. You would expect for the price paid to get a decent amount of food.

Me and a friend came across this cafe while walking our dogs, what a lovely little set up over looking the lake, food was lovely and service was quick, staff seemed friendly. The only let down was the amount of wasps about but that's not there fault they did have stuff out to try and deter them.

Fantastic staff, gorgeous location, tasty homemade cakes. I took my 88 year old friend with dementia for wine & cake and he loves it there and he is always made to feel completely normal. He pays using fake money from his wallet so he still feels independent and then I pay by bank transfer in secret. The staff were very supportive of this. Shame about the wasps also loving the hot weather, those waspinators work as poorly as mine do at home! Thanks to all staff for making us feel welcome. Coming back to do the walking route next time with a lunch stop of course.

Arrived after a walk to a busy cafe, and a staff member stood smoking near the toilets. Ordered one ham sandwich & one tuna sandwich on brown. One shortbread caramel & 2 teas. Firstly it’s cash or bank transfer so if you can’t get a signal you can’t order if no cash with you. The food arrived after a 15 minute wait, I don’t mind waiting it means it should be fresh but what arrived was poor to say the least. Firstly they were the cheapest of white bread cakes not even buttered, served on polystyrene plates, no garnish nothing ! The cups of tea were that full of milk they were tasteless & the caramel shortbread wasn’t set so just a gooey mess. I think the staff need a lesson in providing food they would eat themselves! This cost £16.40 it wasn’t worth £10 ! Whilst I appreciate why they use disposable plates etc, the food should be a bit more appealing. Unfortunately we won’t return

Went here today and ordered 2 flat whites and a toasted teacake. Waited 40 minutes for them to be ready and when the order arrived the coffees were not flat whites they were plain coffees that resembled dishwater. Could not even drink them. I would have returned them only i couldn't face waiting another 40 minutes for another one. Needless to say we won't be going back.

Popped in for a coffee and sandwich today. Food and coffee as always was great. But today the staff went above and beyond their usual tasks by helping reunite a dog that was lost. This dog also succumbed to their amazing sausages to enable it to be put on a lead, which we had been trying to do for over an hour on our walk around Risby. A very big thank you to the staff for enabling the dog to be sent home safely and for our much needed sausage sandwiches.

We visited Folly Lake cafe today. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. We treated ourselves to coffee and a sausage roll. The sausage rolls were amazing. We would certainly recommend them. It’s rare a coffee is served so hot and this really does make a difference. Thank you. We will definitely be visiting again.

I've been here many times over the years and loved the cafe but I have now got fed up with the place continuing to use disposable plates, cups and cutlery (an environmental disaster) and I also find the staff unfriendly. Few of the staff smile even when you smile at them. The sandwiches seem over-priced and poorly presented. The cafe is definitely not as good as it used to be.

Totally relaxing setting in the beautiful forest and lakes of Risby. Brilliant staff and fantastic food ( the home made cakes are amazing ). We started coming here a few years ago and whenever we need to de-stress then this is the place to come!

Have been for a walk around Folly Lakes returned to the Folly Lake Cafe to purchase a cold drink. I ordered a small bottle of Victorian Lemonade 1 x can of Fanta Lemon & 1 x can of Fanta Orange and nearly fell onto the floor when they asked for £8.80p!!! Absolutely scandalous. I will never ever purchase anything from there again. How they get away with it is beyond me I would not recommend this cafe to anyone. You can purchase a full case of 24 x Cans of Fanta Orange for £8 at Iceland. That equates to 33p per can. That is over 9 times the price. Check our the prices before you buy!

Drove out to the cafe only to find that they have no electronic payment facilities - Just cash or ‘bank transfer ‘ in these Covid times we don’t use cash and so left.

We diverted here on our walk from Skidby for a tea/coffee and cake stop. The location is beautiful. The cakes were great but we did have a small problem with the gluten-free Chocolate Orange cake. The cake itself was lovely but it was decorated with a Terrys mini orange segment which we have since confirmed is NOT gluten-free. We weren't sure at the time so the coeliac had passed it to the non-coeliac to be safe .We have alerted management to the problem in an email.

Absolutely fabulous afternoon catching up with friends. With amazing scenic views,Staff are so efficient and friendly, even though they were extremely busy, they remembered me from previous visits.The food as usual was gorgeous, the cakes are too nice! .....Waistline is suffering unfortunately.Looks like gazebos are being erected. These will be really good, when finished.

Having shielded for a year I had my first trip out on Sunday to the local Folly cafe. Despite being nervous about the trip I can honestly say they have very good covid precautions in place and everyone was aware of social distancing so I had nothing to worry about. I made use of one of the benches situated within the parkland and enjoyed a ciabatta, cappucino and a slice of delicious homemade cake and it goes without saying, the children thoroughly enjoyed their icecream. I would certainly recommend anyone who has not visited Folly cafe at Risby to do so as they appear to be going to great lengths to provide a safe environment for their customers and the staff are very friendly and helpful

Disappointing visit. Staff seemed clueless when taking our order, being given our drink 7 minutes before our ciabatta and not asking fellow customers to adhere to social distancing rules whilst waiting for food (blocking the pathway after ordering). Definitely won’t be making a return visit which is a shame considering our current climate and trying to support local businesses. I’d advise people to take a picnic!

Walked to the cafe to get a takeaway hot drink and food. Arrived at the window to be served at 2.26pm, server apologised and asked us to wait while she sorted something. No problem we said and then ordered our bacon sandwich when she returned to serve us at 2.31pm. ‘Sorry, we stop serving cooked food at 2.30’ was the response!!! Even after I pointed out we’d been stood there 5 minutes we were met with a blank look! Really poor attitude towards customers. Shame as it’s a really local cafe to us but we won’t be going back.

Me and my elderly mother walked miles to get here in icy conditions after calling and asking the owner what time it closed. We arrived half an hour before closing time and were told we couldn't be served any hot drinks because they had started cleaning the coffee machine already and no hot drinks were available. We were freezing cold and just wanted something to warm our hands with. You can have a can of drink the rude server told us. We pointed out that it was literally freezing outside and she told us it wasn't her problem. Absolutely stunningly awful. Will spread the word to all. Never visit!

Expensive and stale cakes. Only matched by the smell of dog urine This was supplied by the owners dogs wandering around the cafe and cocking its leg on chairs and one visitors handbag. To think I was worried about covid !

Really got the set up right during Lockdown - thank you. Lovely sandwiches and traybakes. Think should retain the takeaway and eat out set up.

We were looking for somewhere to take the dogs on a wet day and saw this on the Internet . Enfused by the comments we decided to visit. So glad we did. The cafe is lovely and the staff helpful and delightful. The food and drinks served are delicious. We did the local walk (risby round) albeit in the rain and throughly enjoyed the walk. Photo of map attached. It was quiet when we came but the cafe still had a steady stream of customers so it must get very busy on sunny days. There is ample parking which is free and toilets . Highly recommended for both 2 and 4 legged friends.

I stopped off here on a cycle route. The sandwich was lovely, the seating outside is such a lovely setting it was worth the ride. I will definitely return

Despite the bakewell cake being delicious, the price of £4 for this tiny slice is disgraceful. I know times are hard since lockdown but charging such an extortionate amount for cake is daylight robbery, a whole cake would cost about £5. Will not be returning

Awesome breakfast and the staff were lovely. The breakfast was huge though so I would suggest they offer a smaller version for the not so big eaters. It really was lovely. I would also suggest checking the directions on their Facebook page as the post code inputted into satnav sends you to a farm pretty far away. Luckily the locals are lovely and sent us in the right direction.

Cakes are homemade, big and delicious! Beautiful location ideal for walkers, cyclists and dogs. Will be back again soon!

This was my 2nd visit here, for lunch with the family. I really enjoyed it last time, but unfortunately, this time I came away disappointed.Firstly, the road in was extremely bumpy with large pot holes. I went as slow as I could but heard my exhaust scrape on a couple of occasions. It wouldn't take much to rectify this, which is the responsibility of the owners.Secondly, the staff were quite abrupt and not once did they smile! They were like this with everyone, maybe they were having an off day?The food, however, was of a good quality and very tasty. It arrived in good time and we enjoyed it.When leaving, we said goodbye to the staff, but alas, they didnt say goodbye to us!I'm not sure if I would go back, even if the road was repaired, afterall a smile costs nothing!

What a great little cafe by the lake. - wonderful location. Just called in for coffee and cake- the coffee and walnut cake was lovely but the lemon drizzle was exceptional ! Service was somehow lacking and so only 4 stars.

Beautiful location, beautiful cakes! One minor issue is that the cafe doesn’t accept credit/debit cards. I could give it 5 stars for that reason. We were lucky that we had a few quid in cash on us on this occasion and I think that the cafe probably loses a few customers because of this.

Have been here several times for a coffee on a Friday afternoon with no problems but last week we were made to feel very unwelcome. Firstly, while stood in the queue, it was made clear to my friend that the lady in front of her would be allowed to order food but she wouldn't. It was a little after the time food is no longer served but when theres only 2 people stood at the counter why only serve 1? We ordered drinks and I went in to repeat the order but I was clearly invisible to the 2 members of staff that walked past me. Something like "I'll be with you in a minute" would have been nice. Then at 3 o'clock the doors were locked leaving several people sat outside. We hadn't realised it closed at 3 and this hasn't happened before. Would it have been difficult to talk to the customers? Well obviously yes. The road has deteriorated and for that sort of service I wont be negotiating the potholes again!

The location is ideal for walkers/ramblers and fishermen. It’s far from the main road, surrounded by the lake obviously :) and greenery. In other words, very pleasant and relaxing setting.The café itself seems to rely too much on these assets.The service was very slow and they still managed to mess up the orders on our table and a table nearby. Some plates even went back to the kitchen!?I had a piece of coffee and walnut cake. What a disappointment! I could see the walnuts so they were in the cake but the coffee flavour was non-existent. What I could taste though was the sugar and there was plenty of it, far too much. The espresso was not the worse I’ve ever had but not great either.It was not overpriced but not cheap either and they don’t accept payments by card.

Had a lovely lunch with a friend all homemade quiche and really good chips. Staff were very friendly and accommodating and price was reasonable for the standard of the food. Will definitely be going back!

This place is very close to where I live but I have only just discovered it, and what a lovely find!It's set in a fantastic setting of lakes, trees and a folly. Tge view from the outside decking is wonderful and it was a shame it was raining otherwise I would have sat outside.We went for lunch and were made to feel very welcome. The drinks and food arrived in good time. It was clear the food was homemade and fresh. I had vegetarian quiche and it was delicious. I also had a good sized slice of cake, and once again it was delicious. All in all it was a very pleasant experience. I would definitely recommend and now I know where it is I will be back.

It is a relaxing setting but sadly the staff are unwelcoming and not very helpful. Overpriced. A very small portion of chips cost £4!!! We didnt realise this as initially we didnt recieve a receipt. So we asked for the receipt to be itemised, the price of the chips was put as £2 crossed out, then £3 crossed out and finally £4??? We were told that the reason they were so expensive was because they were handcut, but two of our portions were wedges not even chips!

Once again lovely food, setting, and attentive staff. This is the third time I have visited, each time I bring a different set of friends/family because I am so impressed. Looking forward to my next visit.

I have visited many times so took a friend for lunch. Disappointed that chips are now off the menu and that the choice of options has reduced. I opted for salad but was disappointed they don’t do onions. Not particularly good salad and expensive. Have recommended lots of people to try here but better places to visit now the menu has changed

Lovely food and lots of cake options - however, like many other reviewers, we found the customer service distinctly lacking.

One of the best places to have some delicious home made cake or pastry and sit out on the peaceful decking! The staff are so lovely and cater to everything you need!

I booked an afternoon tea for me and my 3 friends. It was fantastic! Great value for money with fresh sandwiches, Scones and beautiful homemade cakes! YUM! Would highly recommend. Such a lovely setting. The staff were really friendly and welcoming! We will definitely be returning!

After tea was delicious and plenty of it. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Would definitely recommend this lovely cafe.

Have visited twice now, on both occasions our orders have been incorrect and late arriving even though there were not that many customers there. On our latest visit, we were left waiting to order at the counter for ages. There were at least 4 members of staff and none of them made eye contact just to even acknowledge the customers that were waiting. When we did finally place an order, the scones were dry and hard and the rest of the order was forgotten. Had to chase up twice and at no point was there an apology or even a friendly acknowldgement of the mistake made.

The food was wonderful. Pleasantly surprised by the on site baking and sandwiches to die for without getting ripped off.. Keep up the good work

We arrived just after the cafe had closed on a cold and wet Bank Holiday Monday ... when she saw us the lady in the cafe went out of her way to make us a cup of tea and give us a seat out of the rain. We shall definitely be back, next time timing our walk to get there in time to try the cakes too! Thank you for making us so welcome.

We come regularly for tea, coffee and sandwiches. Staff are friendly, food is freshly made and the location is lovely.

Was at the cafe following a wonderful walk for a cuppa and food. Amazing place and atmosphere. What amazing staff. "Not been here -- you missed it", Bean here once , you will come again and again. Not seen such a wonderful and friendly staff. Amazing atmosphere. Went for a great walk and came back again, this time for tea and snacks --- Will come again for sure.

I come to Folly Lake at least once a week and I am never disappointed. The welcome is always warm and nothing is too much trouble for Jo and her lovely staff. The sandwiches are great, especially the Coronation Chicken which is packed with chicken breast and is delicious. There are so many wonderful homemade cakes to choose from, one is spoilt for choice and very generous portions! It is in such a lovely setting and great for dog walkers or just to relax. I really love this place ... Keep up the good work!

Had a lovely visit and dog walk around the area. The food is excellent and the cakes are AMAZING, absolutely spoilt for choice. The dog even got a sausage! I will definitely come again.

Toilets are a disgrace , often blocked and lacking paper.There was no evidence of a systematic cleaning schedule. Paper was given reluctantly after having to ask for it.

Visited Saturday lunchtime, it wasn’t too busy at the time but the staff looked in a panic which might explain they were so unwelcoming! Seemed like no one had any experience on how to run a cafe and how to serve customers. They brought our food and had completely forgotten about our drinks order, which when brought were not what we ordered. Giving 2 stars because the setting is so gorgeous so with the right management and staff it could be a great little place.

My friends and i visited the cafe for the first time today, the cafe looked lovely and welcoming from the photos, sadly the staff were not so welcoming, we were made to feel like an inconvenience,evn though we arrived an hour before they were due to close, one woman didn't even manage to smile, she rudely collected our plates and cups, if you continue to treat customers in this way i don't think you'll have many more people visiting which is a shame. we will not be returning.

We turned up for a walk as a friend recommended visiting area. It didn't look that busy from the outside but was surprised how popular the cafe was. Really nice homemade cakes and we will be back.

Arrived here to do a dog walk and whilst waiting for others to arrive was confronted by a very unhappy member of staff who asked if we were setting off soon as the car park was filling up, planned to stay after the walk for tea and cakes, needless to say I gave it a miss.

We have had light lunch and afternoon cakes here on a number of occasions. The quality is very good and the coffee excellent. This cafe is at its very best in warm weather when you can sit outside overlooking fishing lake and woodland. In poor weather you are confined to indoors which can be a little cramped and stuffy

I’m sat here outside the folly lake cafe, the view is stunning. We just had bacon and egg sandwich, my partner had sausage and mushroom and it was so tasty, and it was hot all the way through.

Café besides a lake popular for anglers. Really beautiful and quiet spots. Tables inside and outside with lake views. They have the usual café food with homemade quiches and frittatas but their specialty are the cakes. Absolutely stunning and home made everyday

We were looking for somewhere to eat lunch and saw the signs for folly lake cafe. As we went towards the lakes I did wonder what we would find but what a hidden gem it turned out to be.

We were a group of eleven and had pre booked our breakfast as we were eating earlier than the normal opening hours.

Nice food, good value and location at fairly basic cafe that would have been great but for the noise levels. Ears ringing from the cacophony of noise delivered by the staff in their (non customer) conversations with other staff and friends. What should have been a pleasant interlude became anything but and as a result, unfortunately, will not return.

A lovely relaxing place for lunch. Food excellent and staff very helpful. Well worth a visit, especially if walking the area.

I realise it's a while since we went, but the place describes itself as vegan friendly, but we went with friends for lunch and there was nothing for us at all. There were no dairy-free alternatives for "milk" or butter either.

Lovely environment. Was really looking forward to my first visit. My friend had visited before. Ordered two prawn salads. The prawns were inferior and wet. More yellow peppers than anything else. Very unbalanced, hardly the most difficult dish to put together? My friend was upset as she had highly recommended the place to me. It was very disappointing.

Myself and a friend had lunch at Folly Lake Cafe to celebrate her birthday. I found the cafe on Trip Advisor. The surroundings are beautiful and natural. Wild birds are everywhere and so tame. They were even sitting on our table! The food was lovely. We went about 2pm so didn't need to reserve a table. Would recommend!

decided to do the walk around the area on a hot day. came back to the cafe looking forward to a cold drink to be given a warm can of john smiths whilst in the process of paying for this they had no change as i needed to pay woth a £10 note and the lady serving was acting like this was my fault for some reason !!! then had to ask for a glass to be given a half pint glass with 2 ice cubes in it . having worked in hospitality previosly how some people have jobs amazes me

Went here yesterday with a large group of friends. Had booked beforehand and the staff were quite happy with some of us outside and some of us inside! It was my first visit here and I would definitely return. They do the most delicious quiches, tasty hand cut chips and lovely cakes. A few of us had vegetable quiche or frittata, hand cut chips and salad. All our meals were delicious and the staff even brought us out some smaller pieces of cake to share (left over pieces, all free).

Despite lovely food and cheerful table staff the manageress was rude and unhelpful when our drinks order was wrong ... 3 times

Great spot, overlooking the lake, for a spot of lunch during a Sunday walk with the dog. Great cakes, coffee, tea, scones, etc. all for a good price.

Once you find it the cafe is in the middle of the fishing lakes and is quite rustic. Sat on the veranda in the sun watching the fishing having a great snack and drink. Will be going back at lunch time as the home cooking looked good. Very relaxing with good service and good food in a pleasant environment.

I visited Folly Lake café at the weekend and what a lovely lunch I had. The scenery is superb and it was so nice to sit outside and be able to look out over the fishing lakes, very relaxing. The home cooked food arrived promptly,was very good and I was very well looked after with the staff being friendly, polite and attentive. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Folly Café if you want to unwind after a hectic week at work as you will be well looked after.

I first visited the cafe with my grandma and have since been numerous times with my boyfriend. The outdoor balcony overlooking the lake is lovely especially when the weather is nice. The homemade cakes and savoury items (especially the frittata and Cornish pasties !!) are fantastic with lots of options choose from... the banoffee cake is my favourite ! The quality and speed of service cannot be faulted. Note they only accept cash as they are unable to accept card payments!

Wanted to find somewhere with an outdoor seating area to enjoy the weather... lovely scenery, great food (vegan option was great) and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend!

Disappointed that cash only and with the quality of the food. The bread was not fresh and the 'pickle' in the cheese and pickle sandwich was more salsa than pickle.

Visited with my son, firstly they wouldn’t put some beans on his children’s meal because it was after 11:30am and beans are on the breakfast menu,very unaccomdating, especially for a 3 year old who was crying for beans! The children’s meal, sausage and chips was £3.95, reasonably priced but not when you only get one cheap sausage. The sandwiches are ok but you can get much better for cheaper elsewhere, came with uninspiring side salad, no crisps, coleslaw etc. Finally, the staff were very unfriendly.

Visited here today for a quiet lunch with my husband. We sat at a table which was dirty and I asked if it could be cleaned, and the waitress reluctantly came round with a cloth.the food is very expensive ham egg and chips £8,00 each. It was very noisey in the cafe mainly from the coffee machine and from the staff talking so loud to each other we couldn’t hear ourselves think. We thought it might be quieter outside but as the kitchen window was open it made no difference, this place could be really nice if the staff didn’t shout at each other so loudly and were more friendly and didn’t have attitude problems, they seem not to care wether we were ther or not,

visited for a friend's birthday, had booked a table so we were all able to sit on the verandah overlooking the lake. We all had great coffee and cake, and the Yorkshire Curd, I'll be going back just to buy another one of those. The staff were very friendly and it was so tranquil. One of our party, an avid bird watcher was identifying birds for us and we heard loads of different varieties!

Good place for tea and cake. Feels like your miles from anywhere but your literally off the bypass. Can get busy out on the decking in nice weather. Inside can be chilly on cold days and it’s usually cash only so that’s something to bear in mind.

Visited the cafe after taking the dog for a long walk. Sat outside in the sun in the beautiful surroundings. Food was lovely, had a panini and chips followed by the biggest maid of honour bun I have seen. Lovely friendly service.

A nice location but the cakes cabinet was open at the back letting in flies. Not very hygienic. Good place for a drink but until food hygiene is addressed I would not eat there.

Visited 23rd May as was fishing on one of the lakes on site.Only had a snack but was very welcome.The food is excellent,ie a snack or a meal is spot on .Why not sit outside to eat and listen to the amazing bird life and watch the fishermen on the main lake.We are walking in the area in early June so will be calling in again for some refreshment.

This cafe is in a peaceful place next to two small lakes. The lunch we had there was lovely and the cakes were lovely too. It is a bit hidden away and you have to seek it out but it is worth the search.

Visited yesterday on a recommendation of a friend. Went for a girly lunch. Weather was beautiful so we sat outside on the veranda. Tables and chairs were clean and well maintained. Shelter was available from the blistering sun. Food choices were not excessive but everything looked scrumptious. Chose a quiche and hand cut chips with a dressed salad! It was mouth-wateringly good. Followed by coffee and a jam and cream blackberry scone (coffee and scone were free after following a link on the website). Divine food, maybe a little overpriced for the lunch, but the surroundings made up for that. Also dog friendly (big bonus to me although I left my 3 doodles at home). Would definitely recommend and I will be going back. Definite 5* rating.

Lovely verandas overlooking lakes - cosy indoors. Beautiful homemade cakes, scones and pies. Dog friendly on verandas but not inside the cafe. A truly hidden Yorkshire gem.

This place is a real hidden gem. On a lovely day to sit on the varenda overlooking the lake watching people fishing whilst tucking into a lovely piece of home made cake it’s hard to believe your a stone throw from the hussle and bussle of the city. The odd Goldfinch will visit with a hope someone might throw a crumb his way. I’ve never been disappointed with any of the cakes or scones I’ve tried all freshly baked. The service is excellent and this little place is an excellent stop for any walkers or cyclists to refuel.

I had two visits to the cafe this week. One afternoon visit for tea and cake with a friend and the next day I took my elderly Mum along for lunch as I was so impressed with the food, atmosphere and service.

A lovely place to have good coffee and home made cake. Access to the cafe is not the best but well worth it.

This is a really good place to end a walk or cycle ride in the surrounding countryside. We love to sit out on the deck and watch the goings-on on the pond and feed the very tame finches who come to gather crumbs. The last...

Great spot, especially when the sun is shining! Sit outside, soak up the atmosphere and watch the fishermen and ducks. Food is good, reasonable value and service very friendly.

Lovely little spot by the lake. Did the easy walk around the lake and then stopped at the cafe for a lovely scone and tea. It was a shame we could not take the dog in as it was rather cold for sitting outside but the owner explained that if the cafe had not been so busy we would have been more than welcome to sit inside . Will definitely visit again

Breakfast was great, well presented and tasted perfect.cake was very nice. friendly staff well kept clean cafe well worth a visit.
