Haven't been there for a long time, but as the name suggests 5 star food as always!

Best chips I have had from a chippy was yesterday from here. The lady adding salt and vinegar did an amazing job by shaking the bag before adding more, which allowed both to be on many of the chips and not just the top. Will defo go back.

Always had lovely chips from here but was in this evening about 17.30,was nobody in there and the chips were the worst I've ever had,this time of night would have had people queuing out the door normally won't be going there ever again😪😪

One of the best chippy in Cardiff. Everytime I ordered food, it's the same delicious taste with crispy fish and chips. Must try.

Undercooked batter, soggy chips and bones in my fish unfortunately. However, curry sauce was delicious.

I always enjoy the food here. A small bag is too much for me so I tend to get a half bag which is £2. My only wish is that they sold scampi. It is my favourite fish and chips shop meal. So it means if I am craving that I don't come to my local chip shop, which is a shame.

Refused to take card Payment said "there's a cash point by the Co-op, we don't have a card machine" £48 pounds for 4 x small Cod 2 x Large Chips and 4 x Mushy Peas that weren't that great to be honest... but what really gets my goat is the fact that chap there is either defrauding the actual owner or the tax man...Like 99% of this great countries population I don't care what creed, colour, make or shape you are but if you want to live in this peaceful, fair, democratic country with law and order, the NHS and social service can you please show a bit of courtesy and respect for the rest of us and PAY YOUR TAXES!!

Tried this place about 3 months ago and struggling to find a decent chippy in Cardiff I went back here as it's was OK. This time wow soooo bad. Ordered a large fish he charged me for a small because it was a small piece, put it this way I've had bigger sardines. Was basically just a portion of batter with a 3mm thick piece of fish in it, the batter was so thick it was raw inside and resembled more a doughnut. The chips where all tiny little scrappy bits and tasted like they'd been cooked the night before, curry sauce was good but at £16 for fish and chips and chips with curry, wouldn't pay £5 for it was absolutely vile. The search for a decent chippy continues.

OMG the cost for a large bag of chips is £5.00 which is so dearer than a few chippy's in the area. Judging by the images of the chips they are over cooked and just limp . Today bought chips and sausages well never again sadly. Chips just horrible and sausages tough to eat which possibly means they have sat too long in the heater. What makes it more worse is CASH only ??? we do live in the modern era and they only want coins and notes , get real and move with the times. I have to say there is only two chippys that serve good chips and that's Youngers in Birchgrove and Yans. Fintans are bad so always stay away. Only went here as I was in the Post Office .

I have been a regular customer of the five star for over 10’years and rated the food quite high yes we have had the odd pie that was crusty but overall the food has been excellent I am sadly writing this review due to the food we were served last Wednesday our regular meal once a week involves chicken curry off the bone with Chinese curry, chips or half and half plus a fish cake and a sausage in batter The chicken was tuff and could not be eaten The fish cake was like a brick The large sausage and batter was also disgusting 🤢 I rang and left a voicemail but no reply, I finally made contact and the gentleman replied sorry and hung up. You may think one bad meal is nothing to rant on about but this was disgusting and not Edible They have lost a customer and I advise anyone to be wary that when you do get a bad meal the reply will be sorry. I bought my first bag of chips from 5 star in 1974. And I've popped in now and again since then and the fish and chip's have always been good. The Victoria Fish Bar in Old Church Road has always been better. Today I had the worst fish and chips that I've ever had the misfortune to taste. The batter on the fish was so thick and stodgy that the tiny portion of stale cod tail wasn't even cooked and the chips were slimy and undercooked. I'll drive a bit further into Whitchurch for my fish and chips next time. Oh, and the price of this foul meal? 11 quid.

Terrible service didn't get what I asked for. Only takes cash in this day n age. Chips were mushy, gravy was average and sausage was a regular chip shop sausage.

Nice fish, but expensive, and the small chips is a bag which seemed a bit too small for the price.

Only a 4 star now as the portions used to be a lot bigger, however the chips are very nice indeed small portion are £3 and large £4 so perhaps a little above normal cost but the quality is worth it.

Wonderful chip shop. Absolutely head and shoulders above Fintans who employ a team of underlinings to run it badly whilst the owner is hands off. Five Star however has the owner running the shift and mucking in. He’s a top guy and a friend I’d say. That aside, the chips are always fresh, the service is brilliant and it’s a well run business. It takes cash so occasionally I won’t have my card and will have to use one of the other local chippies which is how I know that Five Star is head and shoulders above them. As a comparison, I had to go to Fintans due to not having my bank card on me so with no ability to withdraw cash (I carry my phone a lot of the time) and the girl serving gave me attitude over the fact that I didn’t want my receipt. She said to me “well you have to have it so I know who you are” to which I said “I’m the only customer here”. Unbelievable really, employing morons. This would never happen at Five Star so I’ve made more of an effort now to just carry my bank card! The burger in batters are my favourite. Very speedy service too, you’re never kept waiting more than a couple of minutes. Don’t bother with anywhere else, this place has everything you want.

Really disappointed on the size. Overall a nice fish and chips although could have been crispier... the large portion was very small, cod was tiny in fact. So its just 4 stars from me

Best fish, chips and other bits in Llandaff north and Whitchurch

Lovely place to get fish and chips, however on this occasion I bought a Chinese from next door and only wanted a large bag of chips from here to accompany it.. I had to wait 15 mins in a very slow moving que to get them. Upon getting to the counter the very nice people behind the counter are moving and packaging up things at a snails pace and are totally oblivious to the large que outside forming.. on a rainy day when the que is equally as large (as they often have an unnecessarily large que) they must loose so much buisness with people not wanting to wait in the rain.. Moral of the rating... please go faster and please train your staff to package/serve faster like other fish bars manage to and if needed cook more efficiently to help with speed. My go to place is Victoria fish bar in Whitchurch who are fantastic with their food too but winning the side with their efficiency in speed.

I was shocked with the food when I got home very poor quality. Shame was looking forward to my tea.....

The staff are so kind and thoughtful and the fish & chips are amazing. I make the effort to drive here from Radyr because they are the best. The staff wrap the chips separately from the fish so that the fish is still crispy when I get home. They even gave my partner a free replacement sausage when he dropped his on the floor! 😊

We travelled from Newport because of the good reviews but to our disappointment we found this shop to be overpriced and overrated. The chips were soggy and warm and the batter fell off the fish and was extremely greasy. Unfortunately due to our experience we would not recommend eating here.

Always attentive. I enjoy a large cod, battered and cooked fresh. Even a regular chips is enough for 2. Victoria pies as they should be, kept in the warmer and with crispy pastry and nice "runny" contents. Unlike the Posh Fish n Chip Shop in Llandaff, NOT a Victoria pie(advertised as one!!) dry in the middle and microwaved!!! batter always soggy as well, dumping these guys for 5 Star.

Brought my pie and chip home about half hour ago chips were tasteless the pie was inedible as it was dry, this was an old pie.

Rubbish portion sizes and expensive for what you get.

Very reasonably priced food! Spent around £14 for 4 people. The battered sausage is truly amazing but the chips aren’t the best in terms of takeaway chips. Not bad chips, just not the best. The staff were also really friendly and didn’t mind us taking forever to decide what we wanted.

If I could put 0 stars I would,i had a piece of fish with 40 yes 40 bones in it Dont they De bone their fish anymore if had been a child or pensioner ....fear of choke I think not good ☹

Great fish cooked fresh, mountains of chips, great tasting curry sauce [hot], on Wednesdays they have a pensioners special, £3,50 for fish and chips, small cod and small chips but I've never been able to eat it all, have to ask for a smaller portion of chips to save waste! And the staff are pleasant and efficient with an owner who cares! Great stuff!

Never disappointed with the takeaway food from here. Okay, there's always a bit of a wait for your fish but then it's always cooked fresh (not dried out under the heat lamps). If you've got young kids with you the staff usually treat them to a free lollipop, one more reason to give them a visit!

Great chip shop.I've never had reason to complain once and not tight with portion sizes either. Plus they have more choices than other chip shops. Can't fault this place.

This has been my fish shop since I was a child. Nice friendly staff good food

We bought large cod and chips to share plus mushy peas yesterday. It was a sunny day, so we too the food to eat on a grassy bank in Hailey Park, Llandaff North. The chips were delicious and the cod tasted fresh, maybe a little oily, but with crispy batter.

Fish and chips always perfect. Staff very helpful. Customers come from all over Cardif to get their meal. Always clean.

Possibly the best chips you'll taste in Cardiff North. The staff are friendly and very patient. The food is really nice, chicken is flavourfull as is the fish and other meat products. Very much worth a visit if you live nearby. There are other chip shops around the area, but I think these are the best (plus, they have a £1 half-bag of chips option which is often just *perfect* for hitting that spot to keep you tiding over until the next main meal.
