Fishy Delishy Fish & Chips in St Albans

We visited this immaculately clean well presented fish and chip restaurant for a late lunch and enjoyed some freshly cooked food that was hot and delicious. Very friendly service and we would definitely eat here again if we were in the area.

This is just not value for money. The fish, although sold as regular , was small and it was definitely hunt the fish !! I don’t think it was worth the 37.00 we paid for two fish and chips and teas Food was ok and cooked fresh so can’t complain about that or the service

The fish and chips were delicious! Fresh fish, crispy batter and perfectly cooked. The chips were crisp on the outside and nice and fluffy inside. My friend and I ate everything on the plate! The décor was lovely, clean and neat. Lastly, the staff are very friendly, welcoming and professional. Can’t wait to go back!!

Went on the off chance really. Glad I did- I had seafood platter and a glass of wine, cost £20 so good value. 3 large cod dijons ( yum ) scampi , calamari and chips , could not finish it all. Decent wine to go with it. I don’t live in St Albans but next time I’m here I will be back .

We have had fish and chips here a few times and have always had a fantastic experience. The fish is great, we have had battered cod and battered haddock and they are both amazing! The chips are always very tasty. The staff are always very helpful and friendly. I can’t wait to go again!

Stopped by yesterday evening “during lockdown part 2” to get a small cod & chips & have to say, fish was absolutely beautiful, meaty, flakey and well cooked, batter light and crispy, chips - great. Highly rate the shop, polite staff, reasonably priced food and brilliant. Will deffo return

Restaurant was absolutely lovely when sorting out an order for me. I ordered through Uber but they messed me around. I contacted the restaurant and they were lovely and friendly and sorted the issue for me by delivering the food themselves. I cannot rate them enough the food was delicious and was kept warm will definitely be going to this chip shop again and again. Massive thankyou to all the lovely staff there

Restaurant is now open after a long coronavirus - related closure. All pandemic procedures are in place. The only fish and chip shop in the centre of St Albans is back and the food was as good as we remembered.

Awful. Ordered 5 cod and chips. The cod had a chemical odour and left us all with a burning sensation in our nostrils. Went to shop to complain and they served me another one with the same issue! They didn't care. Refused to refund me as I ordered via Uber. Never going there again!

Really great! I walked home and the food was still crisp and crunchy. It’s not easy to keep this standard.

Takeaway. Still open, including SUNDAY. The best fish and chips!!! The place is clean and they have adopted the coronavirus recommendations.

Sunday. Apparently, Fishy Plaice is now open on SUNDAY. Not sure of the hours.......possibly 2.00pm - 7.00pm. RESULT.

It’s a TAKEAWAY so they are still open despite virtually everywhere else being shut. I used to love eating in but never mind, their brilliant fish and chips is still available!

All I wanted was a sausage & chips so I was suprised that the chef asked me to take a seat in the eating area. The lady came to take my order within minutes & the food followed shortly. The food was hot & served in a well laid out manner. You were asked if any sauces were required, most drinks including spirts were available. The restaurant was clean & tidy, I would recomend this place to anyone.

Been a couple of times, really nice crisp, clean, fluffy chips. The large portion is £3 and massive.

We popped in on our way to Space Voyage Exhibition & really enjoyed our meal. Great chips, lovely fish & good size burger. Plus not expensive. Great stuff - We'll be back!

I have not eaten here in some time, so we thought we would pay it a visit. I had pie and chips, the rest of the group had Haddock and Chips or Cod and Chips. I found the pie a bit soft and soggy, so the pastry felt unbaked. I love a pie and this didn't compare to say for example a pukka pie from another local chippy or if you go The Mermaid for a Pieminster which are award winning. On comparing the chips to say for example Ocean Fish Bar in London Colney, they don't come close. I tried one of the group's battered Haddock, it was greasy and the batter lacked crispness. I would say get takeaway as the the prices in are significantly higher.

First visit but I’ll be back. Bill and team made me feel immediately welcome as a solo guest. The cod was the freshest and best-cooked ever accompanied by home-made Tartare Sauce. Crispy batter and tasty chips - and all for £5.99 - what great value! Topping it all was the complimentary plate of fruit slices to cleanse the palate - what a great touch. It’s the little things that are most memorable. Clean toilets, superb food, good service ... what’s not to like?

I came in late September after walking from train station to the end of the High Street in search of a decent café. Seeing a chip shop at the last left turn went in, asked to sit down. Menu had Rock and Chips but the waiter said Rock was last seen here in feb. So was about to order a menu Cod dish for about £10.95 - at which point he pointed to the board outside. "Small Cod and Chips, Mon - Thurs, till 3pm, £5.99"So gave it a try, and was impressed by it.Actual - near medium size, with crisp batter, some good size flakes, and good chips. Plus small boat of tartare sauce. Excellent.Came back for exact repeat next day as was in St A for two days. Not sure how long the offer will last but it was drawing in punters and well worth going while it does!Will return same time next year. Place was popular and clean and had friendly staff.

Freshly cooked Fish & Chips to order within the restaurant area. From our observation, this is a family run business which provides good customer service whilst we were there.

For me, fish and chips has always been a junk food greasy meal until I went here. They have put a fantastic meal on the plate which I enjoyed from start to finish. The chips were amazing, tasted fresh and not dripping in oil. The fish fell apart at every bite and almost dissolved in my mouth. I had a lovely glass of rose which wet my appetite and the meal has left me thinking that I wish there were more places of this quality nearer me. If i get to come back to St Albans I will definitely come again. Five stars and more so. Well done

Far to expensive for watery frozen fish. Service laughable, first young man was hopeless although he may have had learning difficulties. Women owner, smiles at first, then all passive aggressive when we dared to question what the delay was on our meal. A family of chancer's who think they can knock out cheap food at premium prices and deserve a medal for it. Had better every where, cheaper and without the attitude. Avoid.

Great fish and chips well served. Remember to take cash as their card machine doesn't work at the take away end!

Now we are regular customers and every time the fish and chips are excellent. I was told by a friend that I should try a fish and chip shop in Harpenden. I did try fish and chips there but not as good as Fishy Plaice.

The best fish n chips I’ve ever had ! I ordered cod and chips with mushy peas on the side. The fish was succulent, the batter was crispy but not greasy. Every chip on my plate was perfect, no dodgy ones. Mushy peas did the job. Honestly I have been to so many famous fish n chip shops around the country and this was the best I had ! The staff were friendly. Lovely decor. I was impressed. The only tiny thing is the vinegar. It was a bit weak, maybe watered down. But apart from that I give it a 5 !

It should be straightforward to get some chips in s fish and chippy. Ah, and they have tables? Great. No, these aren’t just tables though, “it’s a restaurant.” Ok, I’ll sit down then. “I’d like chips and beans please.” (accepting the heavy restaurant surcharge). “Sorry, you cannot just have chips and beans, we’re a restaurant.”

Great fish and chips and curry sauce. They cook the fish to order which is lovely and fresh. The staff are really friendly.

This really is the best fish and chips around, and two things have changed for me since I discovered this place. 1) I now eat my fish and chips in 2) I was never a fan of batter until I tried the fish here! Lovely flakey haddock, perfect chips, all served piping hot. Staff is always friendly, and today we took our almost 1-year old along for his first experience, a huge success.

My wife and I popped in for lunch while on a Christmas shopping afternoon and I would totally recommend this place. I had Cod and Chips and my wife had the Seafood Platter. The Calamari, Scampi and fish were very well cooked and tasted amazingly fresh. The service was quick and very friendly and the whole meal was excellent value. I will return.

Grabbed Friday dinner for the family recently and was impressed. The fish was firm, flaky and had a lot of flavour. The chips were good and all in all a very satisfying find. Only bug bear I have is being in the center of st albans, parking is a bit of a pain, but worth it.

Since moving to St Albans, this is one of only two restaurants / take-aways that we have re-visited. A number of places have let us down, so to find somewhere that serves consistently good food is a bonus. Sit in or take-away. If I was to find one criticism it would be that the take-away only takes cash whilst the restaurant half also accepts cards - bring that over the counter for those days I forget to go to the bank. Otherwise looking forward to my next visit already.

I hate fish and chips........ not anymore. This has got to be the best fish and chip shop in St Albans, NO make that the country, not a bit of grease you get in other shops and crispy chips FANTASTIC!!!!!!! I'll be back. Edward

After reading reviews we decided to eat here on a Friday evening. We were able to be seated easily at approx 6 o`clock but by the time we left every table was taken.

Absolutely lovely! For such fresh fish you would expect to be by the coast and the service was so warm and friendly

Had a delicious lunch here and made use of the lunch deal which was a small cod and chips for £5.99. Perfectly sized and was really yummy! Great value. The service also was excellent, very friendly with a warm approach. Would highly recommend!

Have often passed and looked in - wow what have we been missing!

On a recent trip to St. Albans (my home town) I was parched and looking to buy some water late at night. I thought my only option would be to enter one of the many packed pubs around town and fight my way to the bar! But then I found Fishy Plaice on Catherine Street in St. Albans and the lights still on. So I went inside and asked for a bottle of water.

Really good food, really good staff and really good value! They need to advertise a bit more. Just off the main street means that passing trade is not great.

Absolutely fab! Beautifully cooked fish and chips for miles around. We always come here rather than our local, clean restaurant and friendly staff, warm and comforting on a wet Saturday evening. My parents always insist on a trip to fishy plaice when they visit from the coast! Keep it up.....

Very clean chip shop with good choice of fish. I only had chips which were ok but nothing more. I don't like how they part cook then finish them when you order. Staff very pleasant.

I took my Mum for a quick fish n chips lunch midweek. This place has been around for ages. Nicely cooked and fresh, good value. Enough said.

Over the past couple of years we have made a regular visit. For some reason the quality seems to have deteriorated.The fish batter recipe seems to have been changed and is not so crispy / tasty and the quality of the fish for the specials certainly does not seem so good. Previously the meal has been piping hot when served but have recently had chips that are just warm. Disappointing as we always looked forward to our visits. Hope they will improve as previously they we so good.

We lunched here last week, cleanliness, customer service and great tasting hot food, also a toilet instore which is always a bonus, little extra touches unexpected but always welcome like moistened package wash wipe, a biscuit and a mint and a glass of cold water. Will be back next time we are in the area.

Fresh fish, freshly cooked, juicy and meaty. Perfectly cooked chips and great portion sizes. The guys who run the place are great too. Only downside - should never have changed their name from fishy delishy! Love this place.

We were at St Albans because we took our car there for its annual service. We usually get a courtesy car and leave but we decided to stay this time for we have never seen the town before. It is a beautiful little English town and the people are so friendly. It so happens being Wednesday it was also market day. They were all fresh produce which we were tempted to buy a lot. Time flies when we are having fun and it was time for lunch. We had passed this fish and chip shop earlier when town strolling into the town centre and we had already decided that we were going to have fish and chips for lunch. We got there at 1.30 and the place was pretty packed. We managed to get a good table at a corner and ordered the lunch special of Cod and Chips. It was absolutely delicious. It was freshly fried, the batter was crisp and the cod juicy coupled with some home made tartar sauce. The restaurant was well laid out and clean and I certainly would recommend anyone to try this diner when in St Albans. You won't be disappointed. The restaurant is actually called Fishy Plaice and not Fishy Delishy.

Don't know why we haven't reviewed this place yet; we've been regulars since we moved to St Albans five years ago. We always get a warm welcome, and the food has always been delicious - best fish and chips I've ever had (and I grew up on the North Sea coast!), perfectly cooked every time.

This restaurant serves the highest quality fish and chips. Large portion of (definitely) cod in a light crispy batter and cooked to order so expect a short wait. But it's worth it. Friendly and helpful staff. Spotlessly clean too. This is no greasy spoon. This is top grade fish and chips. Well worth a visit.

Visited tonight. They were very busy but Charla, Harry and the team delivered. Fish & chips was brilliant. The restaurant is clean and the staff professional. We love it here. Do visit.

Have eaten some cracking Fish & Chips over the years but this was right up there. Mouthwatering fresh white cod in the lightest crispiest batter served with a generous portion of chunky golden chips. Fishy Delishy indeed!

Our 1st visit. I heard they fried in matza meal which we love. Sadly it wasn't available. But we had a great fish and chip supper. Fish lovely and fresh and crispy chips. Will definitely be back.

Got takeaway from here a couple weeks ago. Had to wait about ten minutes but boy was it worth it - really great chips, fish and suasages. Definitely happy to recommend this place !!

Bought fish and chips for a picnic in the park. The fish was nice and fresh. Everything was nice and golden. Perfect. The price was average making it a very good place to buy from. Will definitely be back.

My wife and I ate here last night and as usual it was extremely good. I had the seafood platter and she had haddock and chips. All perfect and accompanied by a decent Sauvignon Blanc. The staff are great and friendly. The place is clean and tastefully decorated. Highly recommend!

I went here for the first time a few Fridays ago. The food was reasonably priced and chips were fluffy and crispy. Would definitely recommend.

We occasionally eat in at Fishy Delishy on a Friday evening before or after a few drinks. (There is also a take away section). The restaurant is often quite busy and offers a wide range of different fish as well as some vegetarian options. It is fully licensed so you can have a beer or a glass of wine (I wouldn't recommend the prosecco). I think the owners are Turkish as there is Efes beer which I find goes very well with fish and chips.On our last visit we had calamari, plaice and chips , rock and chips, and a vegetarian burger, plus mushy peas and a side salad (the latter unexpectedly good). The food come straight from the fryer and is delicious. Service is very friendly and usually prompt although it does depend on how busy the take away is.Definitely recommended - although the restaurant service is a lot more than a take away it is a good experience

Took my daughter,who has lived in Canada for over forty years and my 14 year old grandson,who are here on holiday,for their first taste of traditional fish and chips last night.And their unanimous decisions were; Fishy is So Delishy!They have never seen haddock that size in Canadian fish and chip shops or restaurants.Their portions were huge.When I saw the fish and chips arriving,after my grandson had totally enjoyed his starter of sizzling King Prawns- shrimps in Canada-I was convinced that he would not be able to finish a fish that size and chips.But he did.With great enjoyment.Best meal ever he said.Wish there was a Fishy Delishy where we live!Final nice touch to complete a memorable meal,and evening,was the owner personally welcoming them when he heard they were from Canada!Thank you Fishy Delishy.

Great traditional fish and chips, always cooked fresh. We take away sometimes and ocassionally eat in. Very good service in the restaurant and fish so fresh and chips are crispy and fluffy on the inside.

A really good chippy, I stop off here too regularly if I'm honest! Great service. They don't leave loads of food out to keep warm which is great as it means it's freshly cooked but does mean it's a bit slower than some take away.

Visited Fishy Delishy to get something for lunch. It is conveniently located in the center of St Albans just off the high street. There is a separate entrance for the restaurant and the take away section. On this occasion, we bought lunch to take away. The service was friendly. The food was very nice and freshly cooked. The chips were golden, soft on the inside and crisp on the outside like a roast potato. It is almost the best chips I have ever had.The price was reasonable, especially for the kids. Sausage and chips with a drink is under 3. It is a full size sausage. I think it is even enough for an adult (for lunch). Nugget (5) meal is 4. The portions are fairly generous. A large portion of chips is plentiful for 2. The fish is very nice and fresh.This is a really nice chippy. Would definitely visit again. Next time, we may eat in. The restaurant side looks very nice.

Been going here a while, overall I'd say the food is good, although the collection service is just too slow and has soured my experience. When phoning 20 min ahead you expect your food to at least have been cooked! not another wait of half an hour! this happened again on my last visit and on returning to my car i had a glorious yellow parking ticket waiting for me (a very expensive fish & Chips). My advice to those phoning ahead (especially on Friday evening) is to be prepared for a long wait, and don't park in the bay outside the hotel around the corner, as the wardens are ready to pounce. Sadly i think its time to look for a new chippy.

Take away fish and chips, simply the best. Nice staff, spotlessly clean, food delicious, don't order large chips for one, way too much. All food cooked from scratch, it was delicious. Will eat in next time. Highly recommended.

First class fish and chip restaurant.5 people in total 4 had the Cod in batter.Lovely light batter and lovely fresh cod.Owners are friendly and make you feel at home.That was our second visit in Dec.2016.Will definitely be visiting that restaurant again.

After a visit in early November to the Fishy Delishy Fish Restaurant in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, I had some terrible Stomach Cramps & Diarrhoea for 2 weeks afterwards and then went back to inform one of the owner Brothers & he nicely thanked me for the feedback good or bad, but did I think of a Stomach Bug going round Cheshunt? I then went on to my Chemist telling him about it & his answer was: Stomach Bug in Cheshunt? A likely story, think we would be the first one to hear about it, ... so I now knew it was not Fish Poisoning, I HAD BEEN FISH POISONED IN BRAZIL & NEARLY DIED, & the only other thing but the Cheap Lunchtime Fried Fish & Chips I had eaten on the day in question had been an open dish helping of a Tartar Sauce, so may be it just could be a general Hygiene Problem, ... Time will tell, but for me not before or until x-mas 2017 !

We either eat in or get a take-away at least once a month. The fish is always freshly cooked by smart, polite and efficient staff. Chips are just the best! Even if you take-away, the boxes ensure that the contents stay hot and crisp. The interior has had a makeover and now boasts tasteful art-work (the proprietor's own). Also, the exterior has been greatly improved of late. It's worth knowing that the business has an alcohol licence so beer or wine can accompany your meal. What more could you ask! Well done to the new owners.

Everything about this place is amazing. Staff are very polite and enjoy what they do which makes you want to go back again, not just for the food but the friendly conversation. We are recent comers and will continue to do so. Amazing selection of dishes to choose from. The taste is the traditonal one you desire to have. Absolutely brilliant!!!!

We haven't been here for ages but really felt like a return visit today and we were not disappointed. The staff are very friendly and well presented, engaging nicely and answering any questions. Since our last visit they gave redecorated and the new colour scheme us relaxing and comfortable. All items were well prepared and fresh, chips were crisp and tasty. It's hard to give any negative, so I won't. The WCs were clean and well appointed too. Don't be shy to visit you won't be disappointed.

I visit this restaurant regularly with family and friends; the service is just impeccable. I usually have trouble eating fish from any restaurant/takeaway which is why I'm so loyal to this restaurant, the quality of food is never compromised, especially love their fresh hand cut chips. I believe it is run by a family, you can definitely tell with the personal detailed touches. The staff are so welcoming and kind. They also provide a takeaway service which is great. I definitely trust this restaurant with the amazing level of hygiene, its tip-top standard. A must visit for traditional seafood lovers!

Freshly cooked in front of you, such a light batter on the fish. Doesn't leave you feeling bloated at all. Not stodgy or greasy. The chips were to die for, with lots of salt and vinegar for a Friday night treat. I almost felt like I was by the sea. Very reasonable price, and friendly staff. We'll be back!
