Fishermans Cot in Mid Devon

Lovely helpful staff and very nice food Great position by the river Exe. Seating inside and out. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We came here for my birthday just myself and hubby booked a couple of weeks ago, haven't been for years so thought we would return. After getting our drinks which my husband had to repeat serval times to the barman as he was to busy listen in to other conversations going on and not giving us the customer any attention we made our way out side stunning views that's about it the grounds itself are all tired and worn out weeds everywhere very run down and not in keeping which is a shame. We went in to let them no we were ready for our table which we booked to be taken to a table right by the dishwasher door coming and going the table just about fitted our plates food ok mash was smash potato yes we could of complained but after getting another drink to go with our meal and the barman telling other colleagues what a bunch of @#!@#@!@# those guys were earlier and then asking me twice what drink was it you wanted I really didn't think it was worth it! Won't be rushing back that's for sure would have stayed for pudding but put off. Disappointing evening let down by staff.

The pub’s setting is beautiful. Lovely sitting area outside by the river with live music in the background. Food is reasonably priced and lovely. Staff are friendly too. Highly recommend the place.

This is an ideal place to eat. There is plenty of comfortable seating with great views of the river and attentive prompt service.

Indeed, our tour to discover good to great places (or not) in the UK and beyond, continues. I still use my international Catering/Private Service/Customer Service/retail and Hospitality trades professional experiance as well as have been educated in them in five countries since 1982, at a high level, to have a balanced view of judging those things. The spot of The Fisherman's Cot is lovely and the tables are clean. The service is all right but a bit detached as it seems it is on a "Stack'em, Pack'em Rack'em tone" customers wisw. The food was good: we ordered the Pan Sea Bass which was perfectly cooked but the potatoes dry. The Sausage and Mash were delightful but not much vegetables. The Hendricks Gin serving were adequate and satisfying. So, it is a pushed near 85% on 100%. It would be better if the service is way more personalized, the sanitary hygienic gel dispensers at the entrance filled up (as there were empty), freshened up toilets (as it was a bit smelly) and better parking as it was convoluted without correct limiting markings. So, hopefully the time we might come back, it shall be better if they read my trusted review here.

Was lovely food and all round amazing service. Grace was our server today and made us all laugh and was very polite, so thankful for the great service :)

We visited many times over the years, so this was not a one-off choice for a family meal. However, this experience has left us not wanting to return. Bad service, quality of food was poor, chicken Caesar salad was awful, lettuce was cooked, and three of us sent them back. When they returned, chicken was tough, and we just paid and left the restaurant. The roast was way below the normal quality. Normally we have a dessert, but didn't want to stay any longer and didn't tip, which is unheard of for our family. Lovley location, but sadly not for us anymore

Had breakfast and dinner here recently and the staff and service were excellent. The staff were particularly helpful with our young daughter which was greatly appreciated.

Chose the haloumi and mixed veg kebab. Consisted of 3cubes of haloumi, 2pieces of pepper, and onion! All on a tough as boots piece of wrap stuff. Sunday morning passing through on our way to Exeter we thought a coffee/tea in the sun in such an idyllic spot would be a very pleasant mid morning break. The barmaid had other ideas. I asked about a decaf coffee having had a very enjoyable one at a motorway services on Friday. ‘We only do instant’ was the thrusted response - No one else in the bar! So no rush to get to next customer. I thought I’d join my wife in a cup of tea, who also desired a tea cake if served. On request my attention was drawn to the last stand of 5 muffins as the ONLY fare available. At this point my appetite for any product from this place vanished and I told the member of staff I didn’t want to order and that she was rude, continued into Exeter where great service and range of refreshment was received. I guess she got what she wanted no one to serve for another 10 minutes - I can only see this time extending if that is her level of customer service

Visiting family in Devon from Yorkshire, and they recommended the fisherman’s cot. We had a warm welcome from the bar staff on arrival and shown to our table quickly. The table was right by the window with a beautiful view of the river. The staff were friendly and attentive, the food was faultless, excellent value for money. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Decided to visit for coffee on Sunday at 11.30 with friends who haven’t been before . Although we hadn’t visited for a long time , we had good memories of the place . It was packed on arrival at 11.30 am and very cold and windy outside . All vacant tables were reserved . We went to the bar and asked for two flat white coffees and was told in a very abrupt manner ‘don’t do them ‘ then had to ask what was the choice . Asked if we may sit at a table that was reserved for 12.30 as only wanted a quick drink . Was abruptly told no . Asked if any suggestions where to sit as not familiar with the lay out and the one word reply was given ‘outside’ .It was extremely busy but a welcoming smile when approaching the bar doesn’t cost anything .It was an embarrassment after praising the place to our friends . The food was great but the service was APPALLING!!!! So many issues I don’t know where to start. We had Table for 25 people booked for 2pm . At 2.20 we were still waiting in entrance hall. We had to find our own table . It wasn’t cleaned or laid up. (It was Filthy-girl Came and wiped all the food/veg etc on the floor!!!!!!) we went to bar to order and was told someone would take orders at our table. Another 15 min wait. We waited until nearly 3pm then went in search of our carvery tickets and drinks. We were given too many tickets which we took back(they had been added to our bill !!!!) and the drinks were wrong. We asked for vegetarian menu and staff said “there’s one somewhere” and then walked away - So 1 person went without food !. We went to bar to order teas and coffees and the girl was very rude. We had to go looking for tea/coffee after 20 mins again. Etc etc etc. We know you were VERY busy but there was obviously not enough staff for the amount of people you were serving. And the staff you had were next to useless on every level. Even booking was hard work. No mention of carvery on website and rang 4 times before being answered. We spent nearly £400 with you and although the food was fine the service really ruined a special day. My parents golden wedding anniversary- they had their wedding reception there 50 years ago so it was special. But it felt like a real cheap slapdash venue. REALLY DISAPPOINTED

Stayed on Sunday, first time for a while, was a bit worried that is was not privately owned anymore, but nothing to worry about, lovely comfy room and lovely food in the Restaurant. Will be staying again.

The food was good, but the best thing about The Fisherman's Cot has got to be the location.Sitting on the side of the river by a 15th Century Bridge, the view is a bit like a Constable painting. It is amazing that a bridge originally created 500 years ago still supports cars (albeit it is only wide enough for them to go one way at time) and we speculated on what would have happened to anyone who had predicted such vehicles in the days when the foundations were being dug!We just had one of their "Bar Snacks" which consisted of large wedges of cheddar cheese with salad, pickle and (I seem to remember) a home made scone. I do remember it was very tasty and we thought good value.The bar is said to be haunted! You are supposed to be able to hear a lady giggling...but at 2 in the morning! Or could it be the river chattering over the rocks outside the window?Whatever! It is a good place to visit! Especially in the warmer weather when one can sit outside and enjoy the view.Recommended.

This restaurant us a favourite of ours. We especially love breakfast outside by the weir. Yesterday we went for lunch but were disappointed. I had steak & ale pie which was more like gravy pie there was so little meat and what there was, was little slimy bits nothing like you would expect. The knives were so blunt wouldn't even cut the asparagus. The only nice part of the meal was the mash potato. Partner had lamb curry which was nice but a small amount in a separate dish & the rest of the £13 was made up of cheap things like rice, naan bread and onion bhaji. Both of our meals were a bit cold as the young chap waiter left them with us while he went off to find cutlery etc for quite a while. We did feel we had to mention our disappointment and the lady manageress we saw was very understanding and we left knowing that we would come back.

Lived in Tiverton for many years & Fishermans Cot was one of our favourite places. Anyway we moved to Somerset 12 years ago but last Tuesday we had reason to go back to Tiverton and decided to visit the Cot to see how it had changed after all that time. It was a bright sunny day and it looked as beautiful as ever!! Not changed or modernised or ruined. Lovely setting. Had a pleasant drink in the bar and then a lovely 2 course lunch. All very enjoyable served by a smashing friendly waitress. The lunch was lovely and good value for money. Hope it wont be so long until we visit again.

Lovely place and food. Unfortunately we were disappointed this time, there’s needs to be more than one person on the bar when it’s busy. And just don’t know what to say about the curry served on a chopping board. Very confused. Good presentation but not practical.

Frequented here twice whilst staying in Tiverton. The first evening was just for a drink (Valentines) nice & warm & relaxed atmosphere. The Guinness however was not the best pint which was disappointing & was unable to finish (unheard of!).2nd visit today, they do a great looking lunch menu served 12-4 which we viewed the night before. On arrival, (admittedly at 4pm by my phone) we waited at the bar for a short time to wait for someone to appear, we asked if we could still order from tbe lunch menu and were told by the lady, after looking at her watch advised it is 4.03 so no. Customer service wise it would have been a nice touch if she had have checked with the kitchen. No other alternative willingly offered/promoted, she was alone behind the bar which I can appreciate is difficult at times but this doesn't mean the friendly rather than abrupt approach should differ. We stayed for a drink (not Guinness) and enjoyed the ambience and view.

Rooms are modern & spacious. Went for a family room which had a large King Size bed and a sofa bed. Only slight problem was that it was a bit cold but the portable heater saved the day!

Called in for a Sunday lunch. It was very busy and we’re lucky to be given a table as we didn’t book. The meal was ok. I Found the beef quite chewy but there was a range of vegetables to choose from, some of them fresh. I had a small meal, it was fairly priced and was more than ample for my small appetite. The location is stunning and I would return on a summers day to sit outside by the river.

The Management and staff were very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. Thank you all for a very relaxing stay and enabling me to have an affordable night with my sisters that I don't get to do often enough. I highly recommend the Fishermas Cot in Bickleigh, Tiverton.

Half price on mains throughout January if booked 24 hours in advance.

We have eaten here a few times, the location is stunningly beautiful and the restaurant has some interesting bits of history framed on the walls, as to the different celebs that have visited in the past.

Popped in for a last minute lunch today and was very impressed with the variety on the lunch menu. The food was delicious and the staff were all excellent with their customer service and very friendly. A superb 1,2 or 3 course meal was great value for money. I would definitely recommend.

The bar area was quite busy, but we were able to get a table. Our food arrived quickly and was of a good standard - in fact this was one of the best steaks I have had in a long time!

We've not been here for 40 years and it's been nicely modernised. Its position next to the river Exe is idyllic but sadly the food didn't live up to our expectation for such a beautiful place. The menu is standard fare for a bar/restaurant and moderately priced for the area but I have to say that the steak pie was poor. Gristly meat and tough, thick pastry and hardly any vegetables. It wasn't all that hot either. The rest of our party had things with chips, which were just, ok. So, it's a lovely place to visit but I think some attention to the food quality is needed.

My partner and myself decided to go to Fishermans Cot for lunch as it’s a favourite of ours and we have eaten here many times. We went early as we knew it would probably get busy.

Visited for dads birthday and had a lovely carvery. They are happy to serve the kids sides or smaller meals from the menu and do the carvery on sizes to suit every appetite. Lovely staff. Great family meal

Friendly welcome. We had a party of 16 & were well looked after. We booked for Sunday & had a carvery. Three choices of size small, medium & large. Good price & good choice of food very nice. We all left full & happy.

A group of nine of us dined here for lunch in September. We had an outside table overlooking the river which is a very pleasant aspect and view. I had the loin of cod and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of my dish. My cod was delicious and the accompaniments with it were really excellent. My husband had the lunch special ploughman's and he was disappointed with the size of it but he was warned by his sister who lives locally that the lunch specials are much smaller in size compared to the full priced meals. We visit Devon each year and I would love to come back here again. I also thought the selection of wines available was really good.

Visited on November 18th with 34 others on our way to Torquay. Pre-booked food as I have done fir the past 5 years. Great to deal with by email and phone. Despite an overflowing establishment the manager found us an excellent table for 4.

Lovely setting and perfect for photos of the river. Starter and main course was good. Ploughman’s especially good. Unfortunately the dessert didn’t show up due to staff finishing shifts. We waited a good 40 mins for dessert and then decided to get our money back which they gave us. Shame that no apology was given. Oh well
