Fish King in Newark and Sherwood

So. Had fish and chips and mushy peas. Fish was absolutely beautiful. The mushy peas were OK but not sure I'd bother again. Defo be going for the fish and chips though

Much improved. I had previously left a 1 star review due to unreliability. You had no idea whether they will be open or not. But this seems to be sorted. Always friendly service. And the chips and homemade chicken curry special is great.

Really disappointing visit to Fish King on Saturday night. We ordered the family special, which came very quickly, but when we got it home, the 4 mini fish were soggy, and the chips were warm. The lady who did the curry sauce and mushy peas didn't fill them full (they have changed to smaller plastic pots) and when we opened the paper they were wrapped in, 3 lids seem to have melted and come off and there was sauce everywhere. The same with the salad, they put it on a tray instead of a box which they always used to do, and that was everywhere. So disappointed because we don't have fish and chips very often and it was a waste of money.

Dropped in and ordered Cod and chips on Saturday evening. The fish was cooked fresh as we waited. We both said how much we enjoyed it, the Cod was beautifully cooked and the chips were lovely. 😊 We couldn’t fault it.

Fish n chips to take away. I've been going to this chipper for years now, through three different owners. Following a shaky start just after the current owners had taken over - after a 3month shutdown for refurbishment - the standard of the fish n chips is back up to excellent again. I have plaice, chips and mushy peas most weeks and haven't been disappointed since they've found their mojo again. I recommend the food and the friendly service.

Ordered 2 chicken kebabs. Meat was not sliced to order, instead taken from a container on the side. It was cold and dry as anything. One kebab had mixed salad in it and sauce, the other one just a bit of ropey lettuce and hardly any sauce. Strange that they were so different considering we ordered 2 of the same! Such a shame as the kebabs there used to be so nice. Won't be returning.

Got home from holiday on a Monday. Didn't want to cook so went to Fish King for a takeaway. The Monday night special is a small fish and chips for £5.00, so we had one each. Firstly, it's not a "small" fish and chips, rather a very good portion for the price. The fish was nicely cooked and the meal was piping hot. What more could you want???

The staff were lovely, but the food was not as good as it used to be. It is not packed in carton boxes anymore.

Good value and good quality, friendly service. We usually have the Fish King Feast which is great value.

Pineapple fritter is not a potato fritter and the peas look like they have come from mars. Wtf is going on. We live very rurally and my husband went to fetch dinner he ordered me a pineapple fritter and mushy peas and that is definitely not what I got. Very very disappointed

So happy that this fish and chip shop has reopened, probably the best chippy in Newark. Great friendly and fast service everything was cooked fresh, I had Haddock my favourite fish and it was excellent very tasty the chips were also freshly cooked and were really good. I thought the prices were good too.

We don't have fish and chips very often but Fish King has always been our go to chippie. We popped in on our way home from holiday on Thursday as we were hungry. What a disappointment! The fish and chips were luke warm and very dry. There was no one else waiting so assume the food had been stood awhile. The mushy peas were an odd green colour, watery and not tasty. We won't be going again.

Stopped going for a while, but went yesterday unfortunately the chips were inedible, and I had to throw them away, a real shame and what a waste of money, on the plus side the staff are lovely and the service great, this will stop me from going back again, I'll stick with the fryers club

Have been coming here for the last 2 years, never had an issue until the past 2 visits. We travel far for the food and thought we’d give it another try this evening. Fish wasn’t appetising at all. It’s a shame as used to be very good

Food was absolutely aweful we ordered large cod a small cod large chips and a pot of peas we waited 15 mins while it was cooked paid 19.30 !! When we got home all the wrappings were full of oil ! Soaking wet and dripping everywhere, my fishnwas ok the small cod was like boot leather, the good lady was up all night being ill, chips were soggy as well , we thought we would try them as Angels on barnbygate were queing down the street in the rain , i can understand why ! Sort yourself out Fish king or sell up, prices everywhere have gone up but 20 quid for trough food is not acceptable.

Very disappointed this evening because this used to be the best fish & chip shop in Newark. Don’t know if the owners have changed because it was closed for a while. Tonight the chips tasted like they had been fried in old fat. The batter on the fish was soggy and the mushy peas were so runny like pea soup. Although the fish was nice.

I have to say I went to this fish shop about 2 years ago and it was amazing. Sadly not the same can be said this time. It was full of grease we wont be back again. The staff were lovely but the food was not.

The shop recently reopened under new management. My first visit for a impulsive take away lunch. The fish is superb. Portions are generous and price very good indeed. The shop offers excellent traditional fish suppers, along with a range of other offerings, which should suit everyone. They also do various lunchtime offers. Mine yesterday was fish chips and peas for £6.80. The quality of the fish really was excellent, and the portion was much larger than I had expected. Word from other people is also really positive. I would certainly recommend this take-away, and will definitely go back.

Brilliant service and the family special is brilliant value !

Ordered food yesterday for them to turn down my order. Went to the actual shop took my order witch was for 4 adults and 2 children charged me for an extra meal witch wasnt wanted to my order very sly good job I already worked out how much it would come to. Fish was off sickness and runs. Mixed kebab wrap chicken was burnt black rock hard, Donner was thin, dry and crispy. All of this was thrown in the bin after a few bites. Gone down hill since the new owners have taken over will NOT use again!

It must have changed hands. Totally different from last time. Fantastic fish and chips the young staff were very pleasant. Last time i went the bloke that was frying the food was very abrupt with the staff and it made me uncomfortable at one stage i told him to stop shouting at them and take a chill pill. I only go to Newark 3 times a year to see family we are from the lake district. Ill definitely be back in march.

Just had fish and chips from the newly reopened Fish King on offer for £5. Really good fish, decent size, crispy batter and a good portion of fresh cooked chips. Very promising. Will be back

Will give a second chance, but new owners need to make more of an effort with there food. Service was fine but chips was basically raw and chicken was terrible. Will try again in few weeks

As a wheelchair user there double door access enough room for electric wheelchair or they will save you from outside very popular place good quality food very clean and friendly staff very helpful. Just to let people know Fish King is under new management and will be reopening soon hopefully I'll keep everybody posted

Used this chippy for years, since Tina left it’s rapidly going down hill. Cod roe has been off on several occasions, fish smelly and the no cod for weeks.

Used to be my go to weekly , lately the service has been horrendous, online ordering turned off and staff complaining it's busy with only a couple customers. Tried tonight after 5 failed web orders (timed out due to non acceptance) , called twice and visited and no chicken , donner meat at 6.30pn. Shame really as it really was amazing until last couple months ...

Disappointingly, burnt fish and largely tasteless. Chips floury and hard On the other hand it was a quick service.

This is my local chippy, it used to be very good but in recent months it must of changed hands as it's now poor.........tasteless, poor quality fish and the batter was rock hard on the outside yet uncooked and stodgy on the inside, not good. I'll be taking my business elsewhere from now on.

we had not been for a while, friends did tell us chips were not good.we had fish and chips , fish ok.chips the worst we have ever had.we must agree with barnsy2 review.we will not be back.we binned chips after trying a few.

Inconsistent - ordered mini fish one time and it was good, ordered again a few weeks later and it was disgusting, rubbery, tasted foul and stank. Partner's was the same. It has put us off ordering fish from there again.

Phoned in an order, collected and the cost to be reasonable. Service good.

Honestly the worst chips I have eaten in my life. Well, we ate one and put the rest in the bin. Cold and chewy. Hard to believe that people think these are edible.

Varied experience. First time costed was about three months ago. Excellent - not greasy, chunky chips cooked to perfection, lovely fresh fish - thought I’d found my new fav chippy. Second time did a pre-order and sadly both fish - batter was over cooked. Last Thursday after a long day at work... CBA cooking when got home so paused at Fish King on way home. Chips not cooked all the way through. Disappointed. How can the quality vary so much?

Went for the last time last Friday. For the past few weeks the standard has dropped fish always dry and overcooked

Freshly cooked cod, a mountain of delicious, hot chips and of course mushy peas. All cooked to perfection and served with a smile (behind a mask of couse). We will be back.

Oh dear, this place has really gone downhill in the past 6 months. We use this chippy once a fortnight and have done for years but alas all good things come to an end. Yes you have to wait for fish but that’s pretty common nowadays except for peak times. The issues here now are the shop floor is always dirty, they changed the supplier of mushy peas so they’re now a brighter, darker green and just taste of sugar and now the main issue...the fish. The “large” haddock has slowly been getting thinner and smaller but this time it’s so thin that the batter is thicker. Better to go elsewhere.

Went to this chip shop tonight and the fryer and the male member of staff that served me was very friendly polite and helpful.I ordered a family meal deal and the fish and chips were all cooked freshed while I waited.The food was absolutely gorgeous and would thoughly recommend anyone wanting a really quality fish and chip shop to try fish king as it's the best in Newark and value for money.

Asked for chicken doner. Got cold lamb didn't even heat it. Had no taste. Partner got fish and chips. Fish had been heated up and tasted old. Not nice
