Brilliant lunch at lovely new location on Grape Lane. Excellent tuna starter, followed by wonderful coley main, with delicious celeriac and creamy peppercorn sauce. Wine really on point too, especially the St Emilion. One of the best restaurants for fish in York - maybe only Roots is better (and you pay a lot lot more for that!) Service great too - Steph was really nice and kept us topped up!

Absolutely delicious food, where every single bite is an extraordinary experience. We with my partner were positively shocked. I’d say, fish and forest definitely should be on “must visit” list if you ever visit York. The team in the restaurant is super friendly and they kindly found seats for us despite not having booking reservation.

We had a great dinner for my daughter’s birthday. The service was attentive and good explanations were given of the dishes. The menu was limited, but this is always a good sign in my experience-not trying to do too much. There were vegetarian options in both starter and main course. The food was beautifully presented and extremely fresh. The venison was very tender and beautifully cooked. Starter portions were on the small side and the scallops were pretty tiny but very tasty. The only disappointment was the cheese. There was a rather un ceremoniously sliced triangle of quite dry Winchester cheese with a little bit of pickle and two slices of sourdough Melba, not very beautifully presented and I felt this was a rip off at £9. Overall however a delicious meal and would definitely return, avoiding the cheese course.

I went for a Saturday lunch and had a delicious and varied set of dishes, all of them well worth trying. The tuna, mallard and dessert with oat biscuits were both particularly great and worth visiting for those alone. I would caution that the wines are not great, though, particularly in comparison to other York restaurants of similar quality which both serve better wines and pair them better. Both our white (I forget the name) and the Pinot Noir were fine at best. I also strongly recommend that they install some sound proofing, as a loud group near us reverberated throughout. The cocktails (Peru to Japan and Chocolate Old Fashioned) were brilliant though, and very inventive.

Our first visit and definitely not our last but there were a couple of small nigles hence the 4 stars. Had a “snack” of what was billed as ceviche. Using zander from Holland… probably the only non local ingredient. Not a traditional ceviche but gorgeous.. a smoked chilli oil really added depth. So good we ordered a second. Starters were mixed.. blue fin tuna in a dashi broth was excellent. Sadly the venison tartar was over seasoned for our taste. I had a main of venison which was perfectly cooked. My partner had monkfish in cider (actually a starter) which was also great. We ordered sides of roast potatoes… sadly underwhelming and roast cauliflower which saved the day. Bit of a limited wine list. Service was excellent and personable. Bill for 2 with a bottle of wine and 10% came to £145 which was good for the quality of the food.

Stumbled upon this little gem in the narrow streets of York. Limited menu and expensive for lunch but mix up some fishy starters with a couple of sides and you have the perfect solution. Service good and a table near the window is perfect for serious people watching. Forgot to mention the roasted cauliflower- simply stunning!

The food was great, the service was charming. The noise level was unacceptable. We paid £85 a head for beautifully cooked food but the evening was ruined by loud music, people talking over the loud music and people shouting over the people talking over the loud music. When I go out for a meal, I want to be able to converse with the person sitting a couple of feet across the table. Had high expectations but won’t be back.

One of the best restaurant experiences we have had. Thursday night and every table full. Great atmosphere, cosy yet enough space between tables. It was clear the staff are enthusiastic about the food. The menu was brought to us on a chalkboard and was described in passionate detail with recommendations. The food was wonderful. The tomato starter was a real highlight, as were the roasted cauliflowers. We’ve eaten in many fantastic restaurants over the years and this was one of the best. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Best dinner menu I've had in York for a while, Fish and Forest are now at their new (former 1331) venue in Grape Lane. Our cocktails were excellent and a nice pre dinner treat. Staff we're charming and thoughtful, the atmosphere relaxed and purposeful without being too formal. The crab bao starter was a gorgeous seafood flavour bomb and well executed. The monk tail was meaty and packed with flavour. The venison main was beautifully cooked, moist with a delicious sauce. The plaice was fantastic - I was given two pieces to make up for a small one. The fish was cooked on the bone and all the better for it - the rich, creamy sauce with capers and a burst of redcurrants worked really well. Overall the standard of cookery was excellent, fun and much higher than I expected, so good value as well. Go, you won't be disappointed. Thanks for a fab evening 😊

Without a doubt some of the best fish of our lives (and one of us is from Spain and have had 100s of kgs of fish!) 🙌🏻 The flavours came together in an amazing way across dishes! The blue fin tuna belly melted in our mouths, the tomato tomato tomato dish with tomatoes, basil sorbet, strawberries, red onions, capers, and a pepper strawberry “jus” was next level, and the plaice was the most tender, fall-off-the-bone fish I’ve experienced in my life. And oh my lord, grenobloise sauce is just a buttery drop of heaven 😍 The team was amazing and a chat with the head chef and owner Stephen and the lovely chap in charge of drinks (didn’t catch his name) after dinner was just the cherry on top for a perfect evening. We had some different, very boozy, but nonetheless fantastic cocktails with our food and the warm, buzzy feeling in our cheeks left us with no regrets. Thank you Fish&Forest! We hope to be back someday 🩵

Absolutely fantastic. Those sauces on the starters, wow!! Foodie trip to York started with dinner at Fish & Forest and it did not disappoint. Tucked away slightly out of the town centre and if you blinked whilst walking past you may miss it but the food served up here was so good. Currently (I believe the restaurant is relocating) a fairly small dining room right next to the kitchen, the room is filled with the great smell of what is being cooked. Starters were line caught brill with Bordelaise sauce and king scallop with XO sauce. The sauces alone were amazing and enhanced each plate beyond expectation. For mains there was Venison, carrot and jus , and sea bass with sauce charcuterie. The meal finished with a chocolate torte and a fruit crumble. Great service and an intimate vibe, the new place should be a must visit for anyone visiting.

This is one of York’s few Michelin approved restaurants. We visited it in its second venue in Micklegate and have since learnt it has temporarily closed before a third move to another nearby location. One of its curiosities is that is does not advertise anything other than a sample menu and does not even disclose a menu du jour until after taking drinks orders which is somewhat vexatious if one wishes to pair a wine with a specific dish. Perhaps this is a bad point as the menu changes little majoring on fish and venison. All the dishes we sampled were exquisite but we ended up ordering two bowls of rather crudely baked potatoes which were entirely otiose to requirements as our mains were already garnished.

Food was excellent, expertly cooked & flavoursome. Only one dish failed to impress, a rather bland crumble. Aside from that top marks. The 4* rating is because the choice was so limiting - just 4 starters & 4 main courses to go at, & even fewer puds. Whilst I like menus to be concise, this was too limiting. Service was friendly & personal, every dish explained in well informed detail.

Not worthy of the Michelin mention. The first time I’ve ever disagreed with the Michelin guide. I wrote a long review but then realised nobody would read it. Yes! I'll keep it short and sweet. I keep saying it and will keep saying it, Steve cooks fish better than any chef, in my humble experience. Not only is it the cooking, but the sauce and accompanying flavours.. Today was Scallops and XO sauce followed by seabass in buttermilk and wild garlic from Yohan's garden. Generous portion of 3 scallops, cooked to perfection. Lovely crust on one side and a centre as soft as a Hungarian goose down pillow! I could have drunk a glass of the sauce. Seabass isnt the most flavoursome fish but is lovely and delicate. The smoky crusty skin from the konro grill was amazing and the wild garlic was sensational, there as a very restrained flavour. Steve, Steph and the rest of the team thank you. Was great to chat after about your plans for the future......keep doing what makes you guys so special and it'll all work out

I went here for the first time with my partner for a late valentine's treat. Pre-booked using their website without problems. I have to say the front of the building was so understated that it would be easy to walk on by. Indeed I have walked past this restaurant many times without realising it was a restaurant. However, once inside we realised we'd walked into foodie paradise. Very friendly staff upon arrival and the friendlinesss with just the right amount of attentiveness carried on throughout our visit. One thing to be aware of, the menu does not have hundreds of choices. There were 4 starters and 4 mains on the lunchtime menu - don't know whether the evening menu has more items. The kitchen is pretty small and open, so probably would not be able to cater for lots more choice. I think the menu does change seasonably though. For us, we'd rather see a small amount of choices well produced, so we were very happy. Pre-starters: A couple of oysters each - well prepared and delicious Starters: scallops (3 each) in the most amazing sauce. Up there with the best we've had. Mains: 3-ways prepared venison. Beautiful and served with slightly pickled beetroot and a beetroot sauce. Stunning! Veg (roasted potato and tenderstem brocolli) were fine but were charged as an extra. Pudding: Carrot cake. Brought the meal to a lovely end. Conclusion: we've eaten in York many times over the last 30 odd years. We are struggling to recall a meal we have had that was as memorable as this. I guess that means we'll have to come back

This is not my first trip to fish and forest. My first experience was over 2 years ago and I loved it. So I decided to book for valentines and go with my partner. I exoected that the portions would be smaller with it now having Michelin star status as I am not a stranger to fine dining. However, I was shocked at the diminished portion size from my first visit. We didn’t order a starter mainly because the £15 price tag was off putting. We ordered sea bass with salsify and samphire with an extra side of potatoes. The fish dishes were £27 each and the potatoes £5. All that arrived was a piece of fish with a small amount of thinly sliced salsify and some samphire in a sauce. There was no other components to create a meal. The dish itself was more suited to being a starter. It tasted amazing and cooked to perfection but there was simply not enough food. Even with the extra potatoes. I ordered cheese and crackers after and a singular slice of cheese was presented with cracker thins that were beyond dry, brittle and burnt in taste. Very unpleasant. This is so disappointing as the first time I came I was presented with a decent dish of food, I left satisfied and really enjoyed the visit. This time I left disappointed and hungry, and £100 lighter for 2 mains, 1 side, 1 cheese and crackers and 3 small beers. I don’t mind paying more for good food, I expect smaller delicate portions but £27 for a piece of fish and some sauce is a step too far. Very sad as the previous trip was perfect. Staff and setting were great however and the place was clean and has a homely feel to it.

From the moment we walked through the door we felt like we had entered a different world. Perfect service, whatever the next level is to perfect food, relaxed and calm environment. Even the soundtrack could have been tailored for us. Pre-snacks of oysters and sourdough, then starters of scallops (thanks for the spoon to get the last drop of xo sauce). Mains was venison in a flavour popping combination of sauce flavours (beetroot, red wine, chive...). We ordered potatoes and broccoli but honestly didn't need them. To finish carrot cake (cannot explain how next level this was) and cheese. Now saving up for our next visit. You have spoilt us for eating anywhere else.

My husband picked this most wonderful restaurant’ comfy atmosphere- house restaurant - Michelin listed - in beautiful York. We live in Florida so everything was so different. I mention that because the starter special was a freshly caught tuna carpaccio- I understand that tuna caught in UK waters is rare. It melted in my mouth. Very different flavor than tuna in the US. My husband had sea bass with wild mushrooms- he enjoyed this immensely and I had the venison. Wow- wish I could get this flavor in the US. Super lean, no gaminess and texture like a filet. It was a wonderful start to our 20th wedding anniversary. Most wonderful service too- becoming so rare everywhere in the world anymore.

The menu was interesting and, whilst 4-5 choices per course, deceptively difficult to make your mind up as all the options both sounded great and were unique in their own way. It’s nice to go to a restaurant where they just get on and bring you table water without fuss or having to ask (and top ups too), alongside the main drinks orders - nice and simple touch but sums up the service ethos that we experienced all night. Love this place. Stephen and Johanne are the best and the food is to die for. Fresh ingredients, excellent service and always a warm welcome. This is the only restaurant in York that I would go as a woman in my own. If you haven’t...

Really delicious food beautifully cooked. It’s a small menu but a good choice for meat lovers and fish. There is a vegan option if you love your veg! Service was excellent my only wish is for more comfortable seating.

Lovely meal, great staff. Plenty of information about the food. We had oysters to start, then a venison and a scallop starter, all were excellent but the scallops were is a corn soup which was amazing. For mains I had the halibut in a bread and butter sauce with basil oil. My parter had venison. These were both very good but the halibut was particularly great. Nice bottle of rose. All came to around £140 plus tip. Looks they update their menu very regularly. Would happily go back.

Enjoyed a wonderful meal here for my Wife's birthday. The small but perfect menu had us savouring every option and wavering with indecision, much to the team's amusement. We could not have been happier with the delicious food, delivered with fantastic, friendly, and professional service. The bonus prosecco for my wife's birthday was a lovely and unexpected touch as well. Thanks guys, we will be back!

We enjoyed an outstanding lunch today. Although the venison was tempting we went for fish. The Sea Bass and Halibut were cooked to perfection and both came with imaginative and delicious sauces. The starters of scallops and monk tail were fantastic. Would also recommend the Chocolate Delice for desert . Fantastically friendly, helpful and informative service. Not sure i have come across a better non Michelin star restaurant in Yorkshire. Would thoroughly recommend

One of the best meals I've ever eaten. The medley of beetroot was amazing. The halibut I had for my mains was delicious and my hubbies venison looked and tasted superb. We even managed desserts. The chocolate delicious was simple scrummy. 😋

Fantastic Fish and Chips. Had lovely curry sauce too. First visit and will be back when next in the area. Thank you.

Perfect chips. Love them so much. Irish curry is gorgeous. Great staff. Hard working attentive staff. Clean. The only reason I give 4 not 5 is they come in polystyrene boxes which makes the grease pool, batter steam and is horrific for the environment (illegal since Oct 23) and the Julian Sturdy flyer. But overall fish and chips here are a brilliant choice.

Got sausage chips and curry sauce. Sausage was tiny. In Scarborough you get 4 of these for same price. Even charged extra for carton. Very stingey. Typical tight yorkshiremen.
